The Raiders defense that first 12 games of 1986 was awesome...in their four losses, they scored 36 in the aberration opener in Denver, then 6, 9, and 10 points. Hard to win that way. They were pretty much the only AFC team physical enough to matchup with the elite NFC teams like Washington and the Giants. Then after the fumble that turned the '86 season against Philly, they went in the tank. But this was another example of a team that had just about everything but a QB.
They were 8-4 and looking to make a deep postseason run when the wheels came off, starting with that Marcus Allen fumble in OT at Philly. If he doesn't fumble there, we kick the game-winning FG and advance to 9-4. Instead, Philly recovers the fumble, runs it back 60+ yards. Eagles kick a FG and win, and the next Monday night at Seattle we get demolished 37-0. Season over. Or was it? At 8-6, we were still very much alive and were slated to get the 2nd wild card spot. But the next week we barely lost to the Chiefs, 20-17, after having a truly unbelievable minus-7 turnover differential! That's when the season was over. The week after was the final insult, a 30-24 loss at the hands of the lowly 2-13 Colts. Disgraceful. 1986 was the end of the Raider dynasty.
They had some big weakness and not just at QB. The offensive line became so bad, Al drafted left tackle John Clay at #1 the next offseason. I think the Raiders gave up the most sacks in the NFL too. Marc Wilson was probably the worst starting QB the last season in 1985. Then the receivers would be all track guys. Barksdale didn’t even play football in college. Hester was another track guy. That left Dookie Williams as the best WR and he wouldn’t be a starter on any other NFL team. It wasn’t until Tim Brown would they have a true #1 WR.
