Thank you so much - did this as a child with a very elderly Polish couple at church who had no family and used to invite us after church for Polish buns and they taught us this. We loved it, but I couldn’t’ take remember how to do it so thank you for this tutorial! I am loving rediscovering pysanky and my memories of that lovely couple.

    Hello Michael,
I started coating the pysanky with oil prior to holding them up to the flame because I found that oiling the dyed egg surface helps 'set' the dye, and often keeps the dye from rubbing off on the abrasive paper towel.
I've also realized that the oiled surface keeps soot marks off the egg: Sometimes the top of the flame dances a bit while melting the wax off, and the flame can unexpectedly deposit a black carbon streak on the egg shell. However, if the egg is oiled, the carbon streak will sit on the oil, and the oil can be wiped off.
So, long story short: I find that oiling the egg helps to 1) set the dye, and 2) add a protective, fluid layer over the shell for the wax melting process.

Bravo pour votre charmante vidéo, les couleurs naturelles sont tellement plus fines et douces, comme pour faire des tissus pour le patchwork, c'est bien plus joli ! Merci beaucoup !

You made this so romantic and enchanted! Can't wait to try it out in our maker space. Hope to meet you if you will be attending the UNWLA event in April.

I have never put oil on the egg before burning it (or after). Is this to stop spots from forming on the egg? Which I think happens with too much vinegar. Nice designs by the way!

Thank you for the great demonstration of natural dyes for pysanky. I started making pysanky 30 years ago and am teaching to this year as a fund raiser for World United Kitchen Ukraine. When removing the wax have never seen the step of coating the egg in oil before heating the wax for removal. Does that work as a sealant for the egg? Do you blow the eggs at the end or let naturally dry?
