      Also this is just my take and all, but if something has gold in it, it's pretentious, simple as that. Gold serves no nutritional value, no taste, and no visual flair that cannot be achieved otherwise. It's literally there so as to say: "Hey, I'm eating gold, see how rich I am", which is the essence of pretentiousness.

    The box of dates looked to me as being aimed at the Ramadan. Traditionally after fasting it would be broken by eating dates and if you're entertaining a group of friends you could bring this out. Not something for just yourself necessarily but a special social occasion.

    I've said it before, I'll say it again, and I'll continue to say it. If it's food that has gold it is automatically pretentious. There is no way around it. Gold adds no flavor or texture worth having. It is only used to give things a more expensive appearance which is definitionally pretentious.

    • @sdube001
      @sdube001 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

She's way more grounded and down-to-earth, yet still has the experience and knowledge to appreciate the finer things. She's literally the perfect person to do this "Pretentious or not" videos IMO. This probably the first time I agreed with every single outcome.
    Overall, I really love seeing her in these videos, and I really hope she becomes a more regular guest (or even a part of the team) because she really does add a lot to these videos and is a great addition. It's just great to see someone with completely different but just as compelling and credible take on things than the rest of the team. Just wanted to say that I'm thankful that you guys are working to get past reading the manufacturer's claims out verbatim. It's a food channel, not a science channel, but it's still appreciated to have some initial scepticism over what they say, as well as making it clear that you're entirely judging on taste, rather than the fancy "bonus health effects" that some of these things can claim. The mushroom beer a few episodes ago was a bit concerning as it was lent a bit too much credence by the guys as it was giving out incredibly bold claims - but this style of explicitly saying your situation out is the right way to go I think.

      I don't understand how she could think the CBD bitters were pretentious at 79, when it's literally what it's worth (bitters are already on the expensive side, and quality CBD products dont come cheap, but in bitters form, it's gonna last you for ages..)
      The dates however.. seriously, 129 for a box of what.. 25-30? that's 4 each! That's expensive as f***! And yeah there's time and effort put into it.. but a box of dates for that price is seriously pretentious, especially in that box!

    • @Marzi29
      @Marzi29 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's about cultural perspective. Those very fancy boxes of dates are common gifts for special occasions in some cultures, especially the middle east. It's really not about how much the dates cost to produce, it's about people understanding how much you spent on them. They're not birthday gifts (except maybe for someone you're trying very hard to impress) or something to buy for yourself, they're wedding gifts, anniversary gifts, that sort of thing. You buy the expensive brand to impress people and let them know you love them. I'd compare it to a box of chocolates. A good box of like 20 chocolates will cost you maybe a tenner. But if you melted all that chocolate down, there's actually not much chocolate - less than a standard bar. You saying 'just buy a bag of dates and some nuts' is like saying 'just buy ten big bars of chocolate instead'. It's not about what you actually get out of it, it's about the intricacy, the brand, the taste, the specialism. And most importantly, the cultural norms. There's a deep and interesting history around giving extremely fancy and expensive dates as gifts.

    The dates were the most pretentious thing there, by orders of magnitude. It's just fucking dates. I'm Arabic and my family eats a lot of dates, normally you just cut and stone them yourself and fill them with walnuts and the like and it costs a teeny tiny fraction of that over priced box. Honestly paying anything north of £10 for a box of dates is criminal.
    Let me reiterate that they are just dates. They grow everywhere, and preserve really easily because they are naturally low in moisture and don't easily get overripe the way apricots or figs do. They're nearly a staple food and even the priciest Majool or Ajwah varieties are relatively inexpensive.

    • @AkitaSyn
      @AkitaSyn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As someone who’s never seen a date I was wholeheartedly willing to accept the price lol. After some googling I’ve discovered dates are more popular and grown in tropical countries. The UK not being tropical at all I assume the price increase also comes from sourcing the dates? I’m from Canada and I know for a fact that a lot of tropical produce is sold at a higher price :/

    • @RadmanTheWise
      @RadmanTheWise 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AkitaSyn Yeah I think the lack of exposure to dates is a bit of a crime. The dates in that box are all preserved and have a pretty long shelf life. You can tell because they're wrinkled and a the skin is quite translucent and glossy. Fresh ones are plump and generally opaque and dusty looking, they taste better but they obviously don't last long.
      As far as sourcing goes, you will find many varieties in Arab, Indian or Jewish grocers/supermarkets here in England but I'm not entirely sure what your access to those is like in Canada.

    Haha I like poppy! She is very genuine and herself. I was hesitant of watching a SORTED video with new add on person but I think I'll click instantly now if she's on it! She's funny

    So glad Poppy came back to visit so quickly. She is an absolute gem. Entertaining and observant and fits in so well. Genuinely think I’m “Team Poppy for regular appearances”.

      @@Southpaw535 I don’t doubt what you say at all🥰. Based on 0:15 I will play along with the pretence of a return.
      And I’ll restate… she should come back as often as she wants.

    Love Poppy! Her point of view adds so much to the conversation AND she brings out the worst in Jamie's jokes, wich is always a plus

    Fun fact about the king crab: In the northernmost reaches of Norway they're an invasive species, and they are PLENTIFUL. Local fishers have been making a living just catching the heck out of them, and some companies ship live king crabs from Vardø or Kirkenes to all corners of the world.
    I'm not a HUGE fan, but barbecued, marinated king crab leg can be really tasty.

      I've been to a King Crab Safari in Honningsvåg! I was part of the whole process from catching to cooking, it was quite an experience. Freshly cooked and with just a bit of lemon juice the crab tastes amazing. I have had it only once but I would not hesitate to have it again.
