    Can you do a video on Luciferianism? Is it inspired by Gnostic teaching? When did it start? Does it relate to esoteric Satanism? How old is the idea that Lucifer was the light bringer to humans and that the abrahamic God was an “evil authoritarian” god?

    • @achristiananarchist2509
      @achristiananarchist2509 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Luciferianism is an odd duck in the satanic community because it refers to a whole bunch of really diverse groups, some of whom would call themselves satanist while others wouldn't. When I encounter Luciferians within the satanic community, they sometimes describe their belief system the way you describe, as a form of theistic satanism that places Lucifer as a giver of knowledge who stands in opposition to an authoritarian God, but I have also met people who describe themselves as Luciferian and don't acknowledge the Abrahamic God at all. There are are pagans who worship the Roman god Lucifer, and ignore his demonization altogether, just as there are plenty of babylonian pagans who worship Astarte, not the demon Ashteroth that the Christians turned her into, and Norse Pagans who worship Hel under the same logic.
      So, yeah, it's complicated. Some Luciferians have a philosophy that seems very gnostic in nature, placing Lucifer in the place that Christ usually takes in these systems as a savior of humanity, subverting the will of the abrahamic God. Others are pagans worshipping an old Roman god in much the same way he was worshipped prior to being slandered by early Christendom. Others are demonolatrists who do worship the demonized version of Lucifer for various reasons. And still others are just edgelords who like to adopt the affect of demonolatry.

      Meanwhile, I tend to have a low key chuckle whenever hearing the name "Lucifer" in context with Satan. This was ever since I learned that Rabbinic interpretations on Isaiah 14:12 referred to it simply as the planet Venus (brightest star in the sky during dawn, but soon outshined by the sun and "brought down"). It just amuses me thinking about the possibility that this passage could have been misinterpreted for millenia by the whole Christian world.

    Speaking of religions that are hard to define/identity, have you ever considered a video on Confucianism? It's surprising, growing up thinking that Confucianism was a school of philosophy before realizing that a lot of people don't seem to be content with seeing it as just a philosophy. It's a good case of where the western conception of religion or even philosophy is hard to apply to non-western settings.

    • @UltimateArts13

      Alvin Ong that’s a good point. I took a class on it last year and it really opened my definition of religion.

    • @azn3000
      @azn3000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I personally see it as a school of philosophy but I can understand some of the arguments people use especially regarding the ritual aspects. Some like to point out that Confucianism has nothing to do with anything like religion but there are references to Tian/Heaven and Confucius himself in the Analects gives ritual advice to a student asking if he should prioritize sacrifices to the stove god or family god. Then on the other side you some people who define Confucianism as a religion and start applying negative stereotypes of the Catholic Church or Western religion in general onto Confucianism's history in China as if they were analogous.

    • @lshulman58
      @lshulman58 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Confucianism. Great example of a difficult movement to identify as religion or not. Is it a socio-political philosophy? A moral philosophy? Religion or only part of the larger concept of "traditional Chinese religion"?
      I challenge my religion students to debate "is it a religion". Even for myself, this one stumps me. And even scholars of Confucianism seem on the fence about it, posing equally valid points pro and con on the question.

    I would be interested in seeing a video that divulges into actual Satanists beliefs and ideas, such as explaining what black magic is, talking about the core principals of Satanism as a philosophy, etc.
    This current video does not seem to really answer the question of what Satanism(s) actually are, but more on the idea of what a witch hunt it is, and how there was one that was based on the idea of satanic conspiracy back in the 70's 80's and 90's. Not saying that is not interesting at all, but, it does not really go into the actual beliefs and practices of various different denominations of Satanism, like what tends to be covered in videos about other religions.

    Thank you for talking about how diverse Satanism really is. I have a 50/50 belief in both esoteric and rational Satanism. I know I can't confirm what I believe through science, so on a daily basis I rely on science and reason to make informed decisions about politics, morality, etc. I use the esoteric side of Satanism as a means for self-improvement by using it as a dramatic framework to examine parts of my psychology that were repressed and heavily damaged by dealing with past emotional abuse.
    There's plenty of Satanists who insist that they are the only "real Satanists", and esoteric Satanists tend to be discriminated against the most.

      Very interesting to hear what you extract and use this religion/term/philosophy for. I’m Christian myself and first thing I was taught when I left the church was to stop condemning people. I believe and have friends to prove my point that the majority of atheists act more like God would want people to act, than religious people. Very insightful to hear from someone firsthand what they actually practice on it.
      Before I’m crucified here in the comments: my faith in Christ is so strong that I’m very conscious that nothing will ever get between He and myself. Citing Paul: And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow-not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below-indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

    I was kind of dreading to watch this since so often videos/articles/etc about satanism fall into simple gliches but ended up happy that the video was informative and quite well-researched. Of course, 7 minute video on any subject will always only scratch the surface of any subject but this is certainly one of the best primers into the subject for people who are interested in it. As far as the subculture/religion thing, I view satanism as similar term as 'abrahamic religions' where there are three major branches and those have their own sub-brances (judaism, christianity, islam (in order of historic appearance, not in any 'this is better than this' thing). Of course outside academia I think discussion is satanism a religion or a subculture to be bit pointless.
    Also, I find the esoteric/exoteric grouping bit limiting (as dualistic groupings usually are) since there are satanist groups that don't really clearly fall into either category. The one I belong to (star of azazel), for example, don't really state if satan is, according to the group, a real being, a symbol, or such and members aren't expected to be theistic or anything. There are members who are, if not atheistic certainly agnostic and there are members who believe in satan and other divinities. As such, I don't think the group neatly falls into either category.

      You mentioned being part of a Satanist group that doesn’t directly state whether Satan is real or not, which begs the question: why would non-Christians even consider believing in a being that was supposedly invented by Christians? Did the idea for Satan come from somewhere else and enter Christianity later? Do you have any info about this? I can’t find anything in my google searches

    Really a very good primer on what Satanism is and the moral panic around it. There’s quite a bit more to it than what’s covered here, but that would require a very long video. As someone associated with quite a few Satanists and Luciferians, I enjoyed it.
    However, I do wish to state that there is at least one more division between Satanists that wasn’t mentioned here, and that is the Right Hand Path variety, and the Left Hand Path. I’m sure you, as a religious scholar, understand what that means, but for the unenlightened, the focus of the RHP is generally on the wellbeing of society and the “herd”, as we term it. If theistic, it generally includes the belief in deity as something outside the self. The Satanic Temple is often classified in this manner by some, as their focus is on the betterment of the group and societal change. Most world religions outside of Satanism in general also fall into this category.
    The LHP, however, focuses on the self, with little regard to society as a whole. The ultimate goal for this path is apotheosis, becoming one’s own god. The Church of Satan falls into this category, as do many individuals not associated with any groups. The key to the LHP is independence, understanding of the self, destruction of false ego, and confronting one’s own demons.

    Thanks for shedding light on this. My youngest son is a Rational Satanist. After reading the Satanist Bible back in high school, he realized he identified with much of the book and lives his life accordingly. He follows the core philosophies at the heart of Satanism, which are atheism, scientific scepticism, evolutionary biology, social Darwinism, heroic individualism, meritocracy, Lex Talionis, hierarchy, pragmaticism, aesthetics, dark romantic realism, humor, carnality, Epicurean indulgence in balance with Lycurgan Spartan vitality, a Faustian will to explore cutting-edge technology tempered by a respect for the past, and a passion for wildlife and nature. He rejects all things to do with black masses, spells and anything that falls under that ilk, describing them as something not akin to the true followings of Satanic concepts and are only associated with people who want notoriety (which he feels just feeds the negative stereotype). He lives a quiet life and is one of gentlest people I know.

I can understand demonetization since TH-cam still doesn't have an effective way to target ads to specific content like television or print media can, but it's a shame that purely educational material like this is viewed as not being advertiser friendly. Look into Romantic Satanism and the French Decadent movement, which is what modern philosophical Satanism sprang out of.
      Theistic Satanism is highly eclectic, however, and can't be easily defined. Many Theistic Satanists are often pagans, Hindus, or even Christians (like in the Cerro Rico mines), and there are a lot of conflicting sects of Satanists with completely different rituals, philosophies, and cosmologies. Compare, for instance, the Fraternitas Saturni with the Temple of Black Light, or the Temple of Ascending Flame with the House of Delepitore.
      Theistic Satanism tends to be tied to goetic magic, demonology, and Gnosticism, but the nature of this association isn't always the same from even one Satanist to the next. It would be impossible to go over every competing idea.

One white and one black candle second a very sharp small knife a bell to call the four corners north,East , south and finally west.then sub word god with Satan or heaven with helll in the original Our Father opening prayer. Then write out that you choice to follow only Satan as your lord and master. Make a little hole or tiny cut on your thumb to fingerprint and the sign your name in blood then choose a new name closest to the name your parents gave you at birth.then call corners again to close the protective circle . Exodus 22:30 Do the same with your cattle and your sheep. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but give them to me on the eighth day.
      That wasn't the passage I was looking for. Later God gives an option in regard to sacrifice. There is a title which I can't remember, that ais the process where an exchange can be given. eg A donkey may be presented as tho for sacrifice, but can be substituted for a sheep. I guess because of the utility of a Donkey over a sheep, and that it is a more necessary tool for their daily lives. The same is offered for the first son, but the actual substitute is not given and it is left in the air.

(Or, in the case of theistic Satanists, they might just be saying they have a relationship with a being that they refer to as Satan).

    Thanks for your in-depth review and exposition of all things religious. Love your vids and that it's backed up referentially. I think I have now seen most of your work.
    Question: Is there a connection between Satan and Ba'al and Beelzebub? And have you included this in any other of your vids?
    Suggestion: Would love to see a review of the many and multifarious aspects of angels.
    Regards Michael

      There is a connection depending on which Satanic temple you're talking about. We do know Beelzebub's origin as Ba'al ZeBulb, and Satanists of some varieties use him as a patron deity.

    Pushing back against ostracization and stereotypes is generally a very good thing. In the context of Satanism, however, I think that they can't be looked at as mere victims in all of this. As much as I might like to be sometimes, I can't be as open-minded as ReligionForBreakfast. It's good to see things from all perspectives, yet not all perspectives are equal. And if that perspective is to take the iconography of the ultimate evil within the religion you hate the most, using said iconography as a tool in deliberately provocative attempts at "culture jamming," and then having the audacity to say that you're "just another religion," then I don't think that your perspective should be seen as equal to a Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Mormon, or even atheist, Scientologist, pagan, or occultist perspective. While I wouldn't want to associate myself with either one of these types of people, I think I would rather associate myself with an "esoteric Satanist" over a "rationalist Satanist" because at least they believe in something, however ludicrous it may be. "Rationalist Satanism" sounds like Reddit atheism with extra steps. If you don't believe in God, then don't believe in God. If you want to stage a protest in the name of separation of church and state, then stage a protest in the name of separation of church and state. If you want to help young people be more rational thinkers, then help young people be more rational thinkers. But doing these things with Satan-themed statues doesn't help those causes, it just makes "rationalist" Satanists look like bullies at best and psychopaths at worst to outsiders, and makes the abusive religious authorities they're trying to hold accountable look like the better option to those outsiders. While Satanism probably should not be written off as a total joke by a TH-cam channel interested in academic inquiry to all religious practices, the religious practices where their primary reason for existing is to belittle other religious practices probably shouldn't be treated too kindly by such TH-cam channels.

      matthew 18:19-20 and jude 1:9.
      satan is nothing but a coward, but a powerful one, but only because God lets him borrow His power, to help level the playing field of their wager.
      Otherwise God would just mop the floor with satan. There wouldn't even be a challenge.
      Why michael responded to satan as he did, because argueing with satan, at that point in the wager, would have been like argueing with God.
      But if ur interested, the bible states that Father answers the prayers of two praying. So as two Christians, if you want to hang out with satan for a few days, to really get a feel for how stupid he really is, we can both pray together, and Father will provide you with the "experience".
      Why listen to others about the world's biggest loser, when you can see for urself, exactly what satanism is all about, whether it be theistic or atheistic.
