I grew upon fried Bologna sandwiches, sliced tomato and mayo sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches, and tomato and cucumber sandwiches! My folks grew up during the Depression, so we didn’t waste anything! If there was a handful of corn left after dinner, it went in a collage cheese carton, with a masking take label on it saying what it was and when it went in the freezer. If my mom fixed a Turkey, the carcass was picked clean of meat, then wrapped in a couple of layers of aluminum foil, and the meat and carcass both went in the freezer. A couple of times a year, usually when my dad went hunting, she would name home made soup. A big pot of water went on the stove, in went the turkey ir chicken carcass, or she would bring home a soup bone. It cooked until the flavor was pulled from the bones, creating a stock. Then she would taste it and herbs or bullion were added and she would go through the freezer, pull out all of those cottage cheese cartons, and it was all added to the pot! Then she went through the cabinets and threw in a handful of rice, macaroni, a handful of broken spaghetti noodles, whatever was there! Then tasted and added seasoning to taste! It would sometimes be two gallons when done! Some times she baked bread or rolls, sometimes corn bread! It would last us a week or more! Tasted amazing!!!

My mom grew up in a family of 13 kids and their mom. When the depression hit, their dad headed for “greener pastures”, leaving mom and the kids on the farm! The boys fished and hunted for protein, and did the heavy gardening work of plowing and felling timber for cooking and heat in the Winter! The girls did the rest of the gardening, weeding, planting and harvesting, as well as helping mom in the house! They did cleaning, sewing, yardwork, etc. when I was young, I had shirts made from old flour sacks that my mom and older sisters sewed from patterns! My dad grew up on a farm too, 5 brothers and a sister! They hunted, fished, raised poultry and animals on the farm!

Thank you for sharing such rich and heartfelt memories! Your descriptions bring back the essence of resourcefulness and family unity. It’s wonderful to hear about the creative ways your family used every bit of food and the homemade soups that brought everyone together. The stories of your parents growing up during the Depression and making the most of what they had are truly inspiring. Those were definitely times of hard work, but also of incredible resilience and love. Your family’s legacy of making do and coming together is a beautiful reminder of the strength and creativity found in simpler times.

Lime jell- o tuna salad! I remember someone from the Ladies American Legion would show up with something like this from time to time at a pitch in and, only the older ladies would eat it to, I also remember they to would show up with aspic or a ham loaf! Hardly anyone would touch those off the wall things they brought! My mom rarely made desserts for in the evening we had ice cream but, usually in the evening when, we all were watching tv around 7 or 8 pm mom would make us a snack usually and, one popular snack was when she’d make chocolate or peanut butter fudge, another sandwich we grew up on was the the fluffier nutter, with half slice bananas and, course mom found a recipe that called for blending the ingredients together and, make it into a spread and, we would spread it on gram crackers and, that was our favorite snack! 12:39
