Well, I have been waiting to buy and test my Ford Edge before I write a comment on this video. I understand that very few people will reatd this comment as it is postdated, but I had to write it anyway as a tribute to fairness. Some of what you are saying make sense Mat, but some aren't. I bought a Ford Edge 2019, ST with 55.000 kilometers for 25.400 without VAT from Germany. Please notice the price for a secondhand car in comparison with equivalent German brands that you seem to refer to Also, notice that this car is fully equipped for that price. Now let's be fair here, can we?? Further, let's continue with some negatives you are attributing to this car. First, the infotainment system. The car you have tested (2018) is equipped with Sync 2. Indeed, it is slow and not good, you are right. However, cars already as of 2017 and onwards are equipped with Sync 3, which is not top notch if you compare it with other premium and even not so premium brands, but it is way better than Sync 2 that you have tested. In fact, if functionality is what we are talking about and not strange lights and unnecessary functions, one could argue that this is great. American reviewers seem to think so and they know about infotainments. So, it is a very good infotainment and way better than Sync 2. You didn't mention that there is that option, Sync 3, that is. I told you, let's be fair. So, you are saying that you can mix it in terms of ride quality and relaxation with top German rivals. Well, I endorse this. It is an excellent car to drive, a real tank! You are saying that there is a big minus to the luck of engine choices. Well, if you find the one offered satisfactory, why would this be a minus? I find the 238 bhp and 500 nm of torque two litter biturbo diesel an excellent choice. BTW you have tested the previous model with 210 bhp and 450 nm of torque which had 6 speed automatic gearbox instead of the 238 bhp with 8 speed automatic of the 2019 model that I have bought. None of this is too important though. Cars evolve, and even the one you have tested was a good engine. Bottom line: I don't care if there are no other engine options as this one is indeed excellent, so it is not a negative to me. Noisy sunscreen blind? Come on Mat! Left and right marking in the storage a really negative point and a notion of stupidity? Give me a break! This car is excellent for it's price, especially as a secondhand. Actually, one of the very few such bargains in the market. Excellent ride quality, reasonable consumption, full extra, lane assist with steering adjustment, automatic cruise control, speed sign recognition and automatic adjustment of the Cruise control accordingly, 360 sensors, matrix lights, front camera with 180 option, it even parks alone for God's sake. And I haven't even mentioned but very few of the car's equipment. Do you know how much these extras would cost in what you call "premium German brand"? Why do you forget to say that it comes full extra at the price? Isn't it important? And on top of everything it really turns heads, because it's stunning. I do like your style and I laugh a lot with your spirit and jokes, but to put things straight, you have been unfair mate! Good that I didn't pay attention to your review, made my own research and have finally bought it. Guys, please read the owner's reviews. They know better as they live with the cars. This saved me.
I really love your reviews... For a a person like me I really don't get anything about cars except that I want a fast car with economical fuel consumption 😁 I really appreciate that you go in details and show the pros and cons of each and every car you review 😍❤️
sebxx the only reason I want a SUV Is the massive storage in the trunk. I'm so glad it's not a seven seater since I'm just getting my first car and I'll never have more than 3 people in my car at the same time probably.
Here in the colonies, Ford has several hatchbacks, CUVs and SUVs ranging from the tiny Fiesta to the MASSIVE Expedition L. So the Edge doesn't need a 3 row in order to compete.
My issue with a car this size is parking. Kuga is perfect size but a tad small for seats up boot space. Edge looks like a good upgrade but size should have always live sensors all round and rear parking camera. Over 30mpg is good for any SUV near 2 tons.
The things at the back of the car labeled L and R are marked as such so if you remove them it'll be easy to figure out which goes where. They're both kind of shaped similarly so people might get confused. But that it's really hard though because you'd have to be pretty dumb not to figure it out quickly, but still, it's a nice touch.
This is a small to medium SUV in the U.S. it's not very big compared to most cars we drive. We also get the 2.0T I4, 3.5 V6, and 2.7TT V6 no diesels here. Our interior also looks a bit different plus sync 3.
The Explorer & the Maverick/Escape were both imported from the USA to UK & Europe.....and Ford Anglias & Cortinas were exported to The USA in the 60s.... And first 2 gens of German built Ford Capris were sold in North America! To mention just a few
D T The Expedition is WAY bigger than the H3. The H3 was built on the old Chevy Colorado chassis, a compact pickup barely bigger than a Ranger and smaller than an F150.
In the US these are significantly cheaper than the cars you are comparing them too. American made cars are never priced well in the EU due to high import tariffs on vehicles.
Lathan Starnes actually it's due to European cars in your country costing more, the best selling car is a fiesta and that sells well and is priced even cheaper then the German equivalent, only slightly though
Chatta290 European Vehicle import tariffs are 8 times higher than the equivalent American import tariffs as reported by the European Commission in section 2.2 of the "Reducing Transatlantic Barriers to Trade and Investment". European cars are competitively priced in the US.
Lathan Starnes Nissans and Kia cars are extremely cheap and they will be subject to the same taxation though so why arent there vehicles much more. i guess its just like how the range rover is less in dollars in america which is extremely crazy to think surely it would be higher but oh well
Chatta290 Because Nissans are made in Europe, and the EU has a free trade agreement with South Korea. A lot of European nations heavily tax cars based on CO2 emissions and engine displacement, America has no such taxes.
It took me about a minute and a half to understand what you were talking about in the begging pf the video. I just thought that you should have put a photo of The Edge in the storage compartment and then I realized you have already mentioned him 😝
Jerome Seguin America, North America, the Americas. It's not that hard to distinguish. Saying Canada is in America is like saying the UK is in Greater Asia.
For the base price of a Ford Edge you can get a basically fully loaded Skoda Kodiaq, which does have a third row of seats should you need them. The interior quality is pretty much the same, and in the driving aspect, let's be honest, nobody is buying these cars as substitute for a 911.
The Skoda does not look as good in the exterior nor would it be as good off road. Fords AWD system in my opinion would be better than the VW equivalent. The interior of both cars are about the same to be honest. Now Ford does offer better trim levels than Skoda but you will pay for them. They are both nice cars to be honest.
@3:15 - the bit you tap is a leather wrapped padded door insert... which covers all of the upper door. In the Vignale it's all leather... how is it cheap?
Hey Matt, in this video you show your GPS position which I swear is somewhere very near my flat in Yiewsley. In another video, you showed that you were actually staying in a hotel right next to my house in France (just behind my fence). spooky!
I have it and every day I discover new hidden features. Do you know that you can program 3rd key directly with the help of car? Or do you know you can start the engine with the dead battery of the key? Do you know holding unlock button long enough makes down all the windows?
You would never get a European SUV that is the same size for the same money. The Q5 would be the nearest european equivalent and it starts at £40,000 (you may get a deal). ANd if you take a european SUV that is the same size and equipment it will cost an extra few thousand so it could be about 30% more in cost. Lexus RX which is the same size starts at about £48,000 (no extras needed). I would say the best match you will find to the Ford edge would be the Mazda CX5 at £25,000 but will not be as good off road. Land Rover discovery would be a good alternative but would not be as good to drive the road or as reliable. The Ford edge also has an amazing looking exterior for the price and looks very aggressive.
@@bighands69 The nearest competitor is not European. It's Hyundai Santa Fe. It gives you as much space and comfort in the second row as Audi Q7, but is nearly 3x cheaper (when we talk about fully equipped versions).
Hi Chatta290 I am not saying it is as good as a Toureg but it is the same dimensions, albeit lighter by 170kg. Crucially they are both only 5 seaters and both fall behind other premium brands. The Volvo XC90 is a much better car than both but it is now nearly £50k if you put in a couple of decent options. It is a weird thing that quite a fewcar makers have had 7 seats in the mid price model (Tiguan, Disco) but only 5 seats in their luxury model (Toureg, Range Rover historically). So it is not just Ford who are quirky.
Mat you should totally come over here and test the Edge 3.5 Ecoboost. You might get a bit scared. hahahaa! All in good fun though. I find it odd that Ford won't let the stronger engine have the manual as well. Seems like they're shooting themselves in the foot for the sake of upscale features.
William Bouma we don't have the expedition, here in the U.K. Apart from the edge and mustang all the other cars are designed and built in Germany so we have nothing you have
thats the old sync 2 infotainment system, most fords are getting the new sync 3, which is way way better, shame my focus has sync 2...no upgrade option as it requires a completely new screen :(
Well in CH you get one for 29000 and it bearly made any 12k KM where a Range Rover even the lowest one costs about 48000 and a Merc GLE you can't get under 78000 with the same year and optionals, i'm gonna get my self one next year and prob tune it up from the standart 210hp/400nm to 290hp and 500nm for less than 1k so it goes from 0-100 at least in 7,9sec instead of 9,6sec
I have a 2016 eco boost 2 ltr Edge, its giving a squeaky noise when driven. The squeaky noise is intermittent. I have taken it to the dealership at least 5 times and they have not been able to find the cause nor the area from where it’s coming. They say they cannot do anything about it and gave the car to me. I really feel bad about this experience and inefficiency . The squeaky sound takes away the driving pleasure. Is there any way to fix this ?
After 10 months of using the new FORD EDGE I’ve got a lot of problems with it such as strange sound comes from the engine, computer problems, fuel gage getting stuck some time.. etc. it was the worst choice I ever made in 2017..!!
Does it off much over the kuga? I quiet liked the kuga in titanium spec. But Ford sync would probably be a deal breaker. I want android auto in my next car, and I don't think sync has that.
Meh!,... I just returned from holiday in California (April 2022). For driving around, I wanted a big comfortable armchair on wheels and the EDGE seemed like a reasonable option. We spent lots of time driving around LA which, given the states of the roads, presented no particular challenge. Driving down to San Diego for four days, we averaged 22 mpg. The four cylinder turbo engine coped, but I prefer the extra grunt which is available from the V6... In the UK, a gallon of petrol equates to $7.88... In the US, we were paying $5.70 From a drivers point of view,... The lanes on the various interstates we travelled (Interstates 5, 405, 101 etc) were narrower than UK motorways... given the wide wheels, the EDGE wanders a fair bit. The Edge no longer appears in FORD's UK website for new cars... but would I buy a Ford EDGE for use in the UK?.... Not really,... there's better options.
I like the looks but the interior is just not up to par for that price and the infotainment system is one of the most important things nowadays I'm still surprised by brands not putting more effort into this.
Floris Klaver In the U.S. we have Sync 3 with Android auto and Apple car play which is quite good. I'm not sure why they don't have it yet in U.K. Fords.
Mat, this car was built on Feb 29th 2016 ... IT IS NOT A 2017 MODEL, and so your slating review of the SYNC2 system is not appropriate or justified! It's misleading for those looking at purchasing a new EDGE. All EDGE's built from September 1st 2016 are built to the 2017 spec and have the much improved (and frankly superb) SYNC3!
Simon Baxter sync 3 is still crap compared to any systems offered for the past 5 years from the German and British car manufacturers and wh get a ford when you can get a Q5 for the same price
Simon Baxter the edge costs £30,000 for the bottom spec model the VW tiguan costs £21,725 so there is a massive difference in cost especially as the VW will hold the value much better then any FORD, you could get a high spec VW tiguan for the price of the edge. the edge is £1000 less then the Q5 so in that case its obvious to pay less for a better car or a bit more for a even better car because in that price range no one wants a crappy ford
Chatta290 why are you comparing it to the Tiguan? thats Kuga size! Compare it to the Touareg which is its class competitor, in every aspect, and you'll find the difference is £11K less foor the edge. As far as 'crappy fords', I've had a Kuga for 6 years now and the only thing that has been replaced is a parking sensor, oil, filters, pads and tyres .... cant say that for my neigbours troubled VW Tiguan and his mrs' Audi Q7. Residual vaule of the edge is being preducted at 45% after 3 years, again best in its class. Stop being a car snob, forget what 'premium' badge is on the front and look at the real facts.
Simon Baxter the toureg is the class above, the platform is shared with the cayenne and the Q7, dont tell me what is in the class above or not because i know because my parents have been in the market for SUVS in that price range, and we had a audi A6 which was fine no issue whatsoever over three years however we have since bought a new 7 series, we also bought in 2015 a polo and a fiesta the price was valued at around the same so about £16,000, i will tell you the fiesta as it was a petrol cost more then the A6 and the polo due to servicing every 10,000 miles and the MPG was around 50 so again it was lower then the A6 which believe it or not managed the claimed figure of 56mpg and the polo at 83mpg. I'm not a badge snob i know from personal experience, we have had them valued and the polo is worth £1500 more and bear in mind the milage is nearly the same. we were given by VW a what car magazine which was very persuasive because the main thing is the quality and the residual value will be far better then any ford and even ford told us the same thing however they said our cars are cheaper which it wasn't.
This car's day time running lights are among the best ive seen
6:13 cheeky Clarkson impression?
tavi921 yup!
I drove all of these, in fact I more or less live with one of these during my year in the United States, amazing vehicle loved every minute with it
Midsize crossover in the US. "Big beast of a SUV" in UK.
Well I must say that we are so sorry for having smaller cars in the uk and I hope you can except this ever so sincere apology!
Fat Brit means 20 stone, fat Yank means 500lbs....so yes everything in comparison 🙄

sebxx check out the Explorer
The Explorer is bigger
Explorer is bigger that's why it can accomodate more seats.

The Excursion, you mean? ;)
@domspar what about the excursion? U forget that one
Excursion was even bigger :O

How good is the auto/ powershift box on Fords? Is it slick like BMW/MINI 8 speed box or slow revvy and clunky like older autos?
It's like the older ones in this car. The powershift is like a windmill, the problem is that it's churning itself.

Yes. It also comes at a similar price to Touareg or Grand Cherokee.

didnt see the continuity error you mentioned
maybe to do with the hat he was wearing in the beggining but am not sure

Saile Ronoh this is the case in all uk cars...
Could it be the cameraman in the window reflection at 0.44?
I think he refers to his disappearing beanie :)

Please do a review on the 2017 Nissan Murano.

*such a large car* Here in Canada, this only a midsize suv lol. He should review the Expedition.
William Bouma we don't have the expedition, here in the U.K. Apart from the edge and mustang all the other cars are designed and built in Germany so we have nothing you have
Edge is the biggest Ford on sale in EU.
Took me 20 minutes to work out that the continuity error was the beanie. I even checked to make sure this wasn't released on april 1st.
0:10 someone didn’t silence their phone😏😂
My dad has had his car 4 years. I reckon its a match between Ford Edge and Volkswagen Touraeg
thats the old sync 2 infotainment system, most fords are getting the new sync 3, which is way way better, shame my focus has sync 2...no upgrade option as it requires a completely new screen :(
I am waiting for Ford Kuga review!!
In the UK you not getting sync 3 yet
Ethan 69 yes we have it carwow is wrong, AGAIN
US Fords got the new non-Microsoft Synch 3 already in 2016. What's with this UK 2017 doing with Synch 2?
emjayay the uk 2017 does have sync3! This is just a 'new' review of an old 2016 spec car!!
Mat the 2017 models all have Ford Sync 3!!
PerArduaadAstra07 it's still crap compared to the German systems
I have a 2016 eco boost 2 ltr Edge, its giving a squeaky noise when driven. The squeaky noise is intermittent. I have taken it to the dealership at least 5 times and they have not been able to find the cause nor the area from where it’s coming. They say they cannot do anything about it and gave the car to me. I really feel bad about this experience and inefficiency . The squeaky sound takes away the driving pleasure. Is there any way to fix this ?
That sounds very Ford. They are truly built rough. Won't even paint the calipers?!
After 10 months of using the new FORD EDGE I’ve got a lot of problems with it such as strange sound comes from the engine, computer problems, fuel gage getting stuck some time.. etc. it was the worst choice I ever made in 2017..!!
The Ford Edge is assembled in Oakville Ontario CANADA !
I recommend this video and I recommend this car.
Chuck the beany hat in youve got a deal erm not sure whether to take matt seriously or not very entertaining though
the edge sport in black with the led lights looks cool as f*
PerArduaadAstra07 .
Do they not sell Focus in the US?
It is available but prior to the third generation the US market Focus was a different car with a far less attractive design than the European model.
That Ford infotainment system is so 2008.. I hope they will do some big changes.
37mpg is good. My Kuga AWD at 1.7ton does 38mpg and these are up to 300kg heavier.
When is the skoda kodiaq
premium interior and qulity
if this launch in india ?
I would highly advise that you avoid the 2.0L 4 cylinder engine. It is woefully slow on anything but the flattest of roads.
Every video comic with mat watson
+MAT Please do a review of the Maserati Levante soooon!!!
Matt Watson is finally a father 😁😁😁😁😀😀😀😁😁
is this same car which ford offering in India as 2017 ecosport...?
abhijit tawde No, ecosport is the small SUV, Kuga is the mid size SUV and Edge is the large SUV.
abhijit tawde no the eco sport is a third of the price at around £13,000
Does it off much over the kuga? I quiet liked the kuga in titanium spec. But Ford sync would probably be a deal breaker. I want android auto in my next car, and I don't think sync has that.
Stephen Butler Sync 3 has Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Most new ford's today, have the Updated Sync (3)
***** cheers, thanks.
All 2017 Edges have Sync 3, the video has an error
the body shape is like a cayenne and the headlights look cool and sleek like an audi
I like it... but America gets a twin turbo v6 and we get silly little engines 😤😤
Does this come with a 7 seat option?
In the US, we were paying $5.70
From a drivers point of view,...
The Edge is built in Oakville Ontario Canada. Not America as stated in this review.
Fords.
ohmywrd we do have it in the UK. All edges built from 1st sept 2016 come with sync3. This is a very early UK dealer car being reviewed.
Simon Baxter Ah gotcha. Thanks for the updade!
Chatta290 because a fully loaded edge sport handles better and is £10K less ! Thats a lot extra to pay for a few rings on the front and back. ;-)
