I really like the Shaggy Manes. I was wondering about the alcohol precautions that I've seen on inky caps, thanks for covering it. I have eaten shaggy manes and consumed alcohol in the same day, before I heard about the inky cap alcohol precautions. I did not have any adverse effects
Pretty sure I had these growing out of my compost pile a few months back. I wasn't sure about possible lookalikes. Glad you brought that up in your video. Keep up the good work!
I also find them from time to time, mostly at the end of autumn. I know them by the name "Shaggy Inkcap". The process of turning into ink is so fast that is actually difficult to dry them, I have tried it... and it easily becomes black before drying enough to be able to be stored.
I remember I ate this “chicken thigh” mushroom for the first time in grade 8. So tender, fresh and full of light flavour. Lots of memories associated with this experience.
I enjoy eating Shaggy Mane (Coprinus comatus), even after they have started to turn to goo. They make a fine sauce at that stage. The most common mistaken identification I see is that people have a Scaly Ink Cap (Coprinopsis variegata) and think they have a Shaggy Mane. And as a Coprinopsis, the Scaly Ink Cap does have coprine. When people get sick from eating a "Shaggy Mane" and drinking alcohol with their meal, I think they've eaten Scaly Ink Caps instead. I enjoy eating Scaly Ink Caps, but I plan it out, for sure! For either mushroom, if I have many of them at once, I keep the stems separate for storing and cooking. They don't dissolve like the caps, because they hold the mushroom up. The stems are really tasty for cooking and keep in a refrigerator for a few days just fine. Here's to a good Shaggy Mane season!
@@HaphazardHomesteadthat's great, thanks for the reply. I meant the color, the squid ink has a very strong sea flavor, but that can be achieved with seaweed without a problem. In Spain, some people call this mushrooms "chipiron del monte", small squid of the land. Their cap definitely resembles the shape of a chipiron. With the ink, it could be a little fun thing to try :)
These mushrooms absorb heavy metals and unfortunately are generally found in industrial areas. Just saying. I sure would like to see more research on this.
I found one of these in a cattle pen, next to some rotted wood, at my friend’s place a couple of weeks ago in South Texas. It was about a foot tall! I took pictures (but I don’t know how to post them here) at night when I found it, and by the next morning, the cap was dissolved. I had no idea they are edible! What an interesting mushroom. Thank you for the very informative video.
It's funny. I live in Poland and here people do not eat these mushrooms, but generally is very easy to find it. I saw them many times and I did not know them. To now. Thanks for information.
I normally only eat the mushroom species that I've been eating since childhood, however I recently tried Coprinus comatus. They were very good and I hope I'll find some more. This year wasn't very good for edible Boletus, which is what I generally search for.
The shaggy mane is gorgeous, but I found it only in very humid places, like truck puddles that stay for a long time, or around water flowing out of puddles. We used to have them in the fields too, but the autumns at the time were very bad, with thick fog for weeks in a row. So, my impression for Shaggy Mane is: It needs an extreme lot of of humidity!
Great video, thank you for this info about alcohol and shaggy main, the reason I have never tried this mushroom is few beers I like to have after work even it grows all around me
Do you think the area your in and around has greater benefit for learning these studies ,lessons. OPPOSED To say South east ! Are things same learning with such different environments?? Or Should i be focused on did things that the wild wild West Thank
I would say definitely concentrate on the mushrooms in your area- it can be different geopgraphically. Alberta is OK for mushrooms, but not amazing. There are many cool species that we do not see here very often. Best bet is to hook up with a local mycological society or mushroom group :)
I think I have seen a shaggy mane in front yard, three came up first time a couple of months ago, its like two inches head part looks the same, with that whole fuzzy look but I have never seen it ink though but I've seen it turn to brown powder. The head is like one inches or half a inches is it a family member
None of the Coprinus species are toxic with alcohol. You are thinking about Coprinopsis which isn't that closely related to Coprinus despite the similar name.
I bought a block of mycelium and will be growing them in my low temperature greenhouse. (Part of CHB for those in the know)
have fun with it!!
Cody'sLab Can’t wait to see it!
What happened to the mushrooms? It's been 4 weeks since you uploaded that video
When I went to look up about a mushroom I love and I happen to stumble across my favourite content creator in the comments section!
Cody figured from your other videos that we are watching the same set of videos! Haha.

These things literally popped up in my yard overnight and they aren’t small at all. Nature is amazing.

ya, they really need to be picked young for this to work well
Exactly what I was looking for to help with identifying this mushroom. Thank you
I found a ton of these yesterday.
Eat up. They aren't super flavorful but they have a wonderful texture imo
Fried up some today!!!! Omg they were amazing!!!!

What color is the spore print please?
Black. They are exceptionally easy to identify without a print though

I know it will turn everything black, but is the ink edible when fresh? Could it be used as a squid ink substitute?
@@arialblack87 Yes, the shaggy mane ink is fine for a sauce or soup! But I've never had squid ink, so I don't know how similar they would be in taste.

Can you do foraging and cook?

As always you are awesome.
Hi Cody I'm new to the mushroom world and I was wondering if you can sale the shaggy main mushrooms ink, and if so what do I need to know?
They usually appear in late summer and fall, but I saw shaggy mane on May 7, 2020 and made a video about it, sharing on my channel.
I normally only eat the mushroom species that I've been eating since childhood, however I recently tried Coprinus comatus. They were very good and I hope I'll find some more. This year wasn't very good for edible Boletus, which is what I generally search for.
Hi I been looking to see where I can buy these .. can you share any sites that sells these ? Thank you
They’re my favorite mushrooms

Not really, I find them pretty often in Colorado, and it's basically a semi arid desert here.
I just found 99+ (I counted) of these mushrooms that literally sprouted up almost overnight!

glad you like it :)
They like cattle manure enriched fields
Pearl of wisdom for today. I read in books that shaggy mane indeed does contain coprine; that may have been wrong.
I had shaggy main for breakfast, drinking beer in the afternoon, looks like not so much coprine
Nope bud, you CAN eat and booze

A better "look alike" to mention would have been podaxis pistillaris
Can we find this mushroom in India?
Hi, could you make a video about Sparassis Crispa? It's a relatively rare mushroom but super delicious and easy to identify
Cool idea! I'll put it on the list :)
You are right! Shaggy mane taste very good! I know that the shaggy mane look alike does not have the same Gill structure.
If a spawn is contaminated, should they be completely discarded?
If i accidentally planted a contaminated spawn, will the fruit bodies be dangwrous?

I wish that I could show you bcaz it would be easier.
One more question am I supposed to give water and if so how much?
shaggy manes where i live tend to self dry and tend to get kicked
I had a few of these growing in our yard untill Mom cleaned out the aria they where growing . 😢
They come back in the same spot every year in my yard. Do you guys spray the lawn or anything?
What How can you just show one look a like that we show be careful of and expect us to know the others
Its the same guy WOW

'This confusion STEMS from the fact'
Ha, I see what you did there.
its a stipe though
Def do not look near golf courses ... One of the most toxic places you could pick from..

I had shaggy main for breakfast today, I am on my fifth beer and I feel great
@@dadob8458 Exactly
@@dadob8458 shaggy inkcaps are fine. Common inkcaps are not
Oof
These are junk mushrooms in Latvia. No one bothers with them.
