@aiden belizaire Hey man I'm in Manchester too lived here all my life, after graduating I'm thinking of Vancouver too please let me know how you find the comparison 😇! (I'll sub)!
Good to hear that you're enjoying things despite some of the cost of living strains. I'm due to come out to Vancouver from the UK in February next year, so it's always useful to hear a realistic portrayal of what the experience can be like! Definitely will have to think about living with roomies outside the downtown core aha :D
Yeah, the cost of living is very tough here! Living with roomies outside of downtown is cool! Keep an eye out for my next vid, which will be looking at the rental costs etc
So I feel that I need to comment on your food costs. I have grown up in British Columbia, so I know all of the prices .. you do not need to shop at 3 different places .. and you can find big chain stores that you can do everything at once. You showed laundry detergent in the camera shot, you can get no name brands for much cheaper. I can do a weekly shop for under 100.00. It's just about choosing cheaper brands, and shopping at different stores. And, in Canada, there is no tax on grocery food. None.
You definitely can’t do a big shop for under $100. The No name brands aren’t as cheap as people make out. The costs just keep going up and up. And if you want to save money, you do have to hunt around. Prices fluctuate in different stores. And yes, there are taxes added when shopping. Depends what you buy, but I’ve seen them on my receipts 🤷🏼♂️
@Jack Strange not for food. Food is tax free in grocery stores. So items like eggs, cheese, etc. It's only the prepared foods like a store bought sandwich. I've lived in British Columbia all my life, and Vancouver, yes you can buy groceries for cheaper.
Hi Jack so glad you’re back,I’ve been eagerly waiting for your next installment. Sorry to hear your partner still hasn’t found work yet. As I mentioned in a previous post it took me about 6 months to find my first software job. It’s ridiculous the hoops they are making him jump through. I think part of the problem is not having “Canadian work experience”. I am not sure if it helped me taking a window cleaner job for a few months and they considered that “Canadian work experience” but a few months later I got my first software job in Canada. I had all ready been working as as software engineer in the UK for 4 years so go figure. I can’t believe how much rent is in Vancouver now but it’s just as bad in the SF Bay Area. When I lived in Vancouver in 1995 I was renting a 1 bed apartment in Kits for around $650 per month. Crazy times.
Thanks so much for this video Jack. My partner and I were planning on doing the IEC to Vancouver in the new year but after thinking of all the finances (we also have cats!) and where we are in our career we think it makes sense to travel Europe first and hopefully move to Canada in the future. Best of luck and I hope your partner is able to find a job soon!
That’s going to be my next video 😉 if you want heart of the city then downtown is a good shout. If you don’t mind a short commute then kits or north van
I can’t speak for Toronto or anywhere else other than Vancouver as that’s where I live. I can try and do a comparison, but know that Toronto and Vancouver are both expensive and both continue to out price each other
@@JackStrange That would be helpful if you could, I’d love to know what made you decide to choose Vancouver, maybe cost of living is a big factor but I’m sure there are many more..
Hi Jack, I know you brought your cats over? I was just wondering if you went with air canada and did you bring them in a pet carrier on the plane? If you did, what pet carrier did you use? Cheers
They flew cargo via air Canada, because we couldn’t bring all of them on the plane at the same time. We used a company called Pet Air UK who organised everything for us, from the paperwork we needed, to manufacturing airline approved crates
Hello Jack! Just wondering if your partner would consider doing a job unrelated to his skill just while waiting for a job or has he found that difficult too? Eg bar tending etc
I moved to the UK from Vancouver over a year ago and as I'm watching more of this video I'm surprised by how much of the exact same I experienced here in Manchester. Expensive rent/bills (unexpected bills such as council tax and TV license), limiting grocery stores, and job interviewing process of answering quizzes and waiting forever to get a response! I will agree that rent in Vancouver is criminal, but the energy bill here in the UK shocked me when it jumped up over %200! I am moving back to Vancouver in 2 months, so it will be interesting to see how much it's changed in a year and a half. Although I will miss the cheap phone plans.
I would love to know your thoughts! Will you keep me posted? Grocery prices here are insane, along with crazy taxes on everything and the rent. I don’t know if it’s that bad back home now, so please let me know!!!
@@JackStrange the soaring rent (in Manchester and surrounding areas) and the rise in energy prices is making it difficult to get by. This city is reminding me of the same boom Vancouver went through back in 2012, it's on the cusp of being unaffordable, but still has some affordable options for now. All the striking is making living in England difficult (especially in the north), mainly with NHS, rail services and Royal Mail all striking at the same time. That being said, if my partner didn't receive an amazing job opportunity back in Vancouver we wouldn't be moving back, because Vancouver has become a playground for the rich, and the middle class are being pushed aside. As a separate issue, renewing our residence permit to live in the UK is expensive, especially since we need to pay for NHS in a lump sum when we renew (yes, we don't get it for "free" even though the tax comes off of our paycheques). City problems! Struggles everywhere, just depends on what one is able to tolerate.
It bears mentioning that the cost of living has skyrocketed due to COVID and the posted inflation rate doesn't seem to correspond to what one sees at grocery stores. Everything I used to buy is at least 30% more than just 2 years ago and about a quarter of what I used to buy has doubled in price. I imagine the same thing has happened in the UK as every country is at the mercy of global supply chains.
I’ve definitely come at the wrong time, you’re not wrong there. I can see how inflation has really hit Canada. However, while the UK has seen inflation, it has not seen it to the cost that Canada has, and certainly not across the board. I’ve been comparing prices of what I could buy in UK supermarkets and what I can but here, and the UK price is still very affordable, whereas Canada prices from groceries, to housing and rent, to gas and cars, has gone up so high, not even correlating to conversion rate, like you say. In the UK, we could buy a pack of say chicken breast for £3. Here? $11, maybe more? One thing that shocked me too is price of even herbs! Buy some herbs from UK supermarket and it’s probably not even £1. Here? $8!! Then that’s before taxes - BC with two taxes. It’s crazy! I guess maybe UK benefits from better trade deals and growing their own things? Whereas, I might be wrong, but Canada seem to import a lot of their stuff from the US & abroad, instead of growing or making their own? (And even if they do make their own, it’s still $12!)
Thanks so much for the update! Your videos are super valuable for me as im moving to Vancouver from Manchester early next year! Thanks again! 😄
Absolutely! Glad you’re still here and still watching! Appreciate it!

Thanks Bob! Glad you’re still here. Gone are the days of reasonable rent like $650!
Quick solution for the car issue, sign up to a car share such as Evo, and for longer trips, Modo. No need for an expensive car.

Did you find that groceries are more expensive in Canada compared to UK?

Hello there, I'm currently torn between moving to Belfast and Vancouver..what would you advice? Thank you. So love your videos
This is so helpful! Also a Brit here making the move hopefully next year. Any areas you’d recommend for finding apartments?
