      Lucky for me not so for older gentlemen. He was a mechanic fixing up this old bike, fell ill. The family let it sit 6 months. I take care of their equipment so they gave me this thing with battery ignition switch piston and rings extra wheels tires brake shoes and hardware plus parts for other bikes carbs lots of things. My boys and I fix and restore whatever we can get our hands on. We built a 212 to crazy fast then broke the crank took a crank out of much older 212 put it in and was better then ever. Man I really think it was like stroking it. I will not have boys who can not turn wrenches.

      What do you think of lite head porting/ gasket matching? Worth it? Not a race bike I know but I'm thinking why not

      I used to be a mechanic cars and lite trucks. Also worked on MSC ships. Now I do mostly finish carpentry cabinets crown molding windows doors ect. I think I got this but I have never wanted a fuel injected bike. Can I stick a carb on it and still have electric shift work? Without that kit? Sometimes simple is better

    I have same four wheeler and mine has just over 100 hours on it.. No problems at all until I changed the oil for the first time and now it smokes but only under heavy load/throttle. It's not using oil. Yes Ive changed the oil again using different type and checked filters and its still smoking.. I won this bike in a raffle so it sucks that its screwing up on me. What should be my first step? And does it sound major. I've never had it flooded. Yea I've ridden it good in mud and water holes but not excessive abuse or flooding out

  • @rayworx
    @rayworx 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    If (God forbid) you had an oil leak after the engine was all assembled.... and all the plastic was reassembled.... you'd have to take it all apart to fix any problem. My point is:
    never reassemble the vehicle until you've heard the engine run. It's easier to fix something without the plastic and airbox installed rather than afterwards

    Mine smoked bad at first start up for the first 15 mins after my top end rebuild. I don’t know if it was the new rings took a bit to finally seat, or if it was all the oil I used oiling things down on assembly. I put oil on my rings in around the piston, and I coated my cylinder down with oil when assembled it. John Talley on Partzilla said to, so I did. He’s the man. If he says to, you do it lol. I was freaking out mad at first tho then it eventually stopped once it all burned off.

  • @rayworx

    a tip I've learned: when your done putting the valve keepers (called a cotter by Honda) tap on the top of the valve with a plastic hammer. This will help so 'seat' the valve keepers.

    • @TynkaTyme
      @TynkaTyme  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely not a bent valve. If a valve was bent you would have low compression.
      Also, if a valve was bent, it wouldn’t just straighten up after 2 minutes. Sounds like you should do the same thing i did in this video and it will fix your problem, as long as the cylinder isn’t scored up too bad

    • @TynkaTyme
      @TynkaTyme  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joshua Strickland did you replace the piston? If so, you might have accidentally purchased the oversize piston, which won’t fit in the stock bore of the cylinder

      It’s tuff. Just gotta keep playing with it

  • @nathanboswell8279
    @nathanboswell8279 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What causes this?

  • @rayworx
    @rayworx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since more wear occurs at the top 1/2 of the cylinder (and virtually no wear occurs on the bottom 1/4 of the bore) it's better to measure ring end gap at or near the top side of the cylinder.
    You did exactly the right thing to position the rings (sliding the piston down the bore to position the ring) Good Technique! But it remains that by measuring the Ring End Gap at the bottom of the
    bore you'll get a more optimistic (or inaccurate) measurement than at or near the top of the bore.

    • @TynkaTyme
      @TynkaTyme  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! I’d love to agree with you, as your comment makes great sense. However, I’m a by the book kind of person. If the manual says to do it a certain way, that’s how i do it. Straight from the Honda 420 manual;
      “Insert each piston ring into the bottom of the cylinder squarely using the piston. Measure ring end gap”

    • @rayworx
      @rayworx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TynkaTyme I commend you in following the manual. Unfortunately this time it's wrong. Wear occurs 'where the piston stroke is'. Measure from the cylinder top down
      about 10mm and then to the bottom of the stroke of the piston... usually about 34-50mm. This is where the rings wear on the cylinder. Ring end gap will be the greatest in this area. I've seen Honda revise
      their manuals (usually with a sheet that is glued over the existing page) when the information is inaccurate or needs to be updated. 35 years as a Master Tech and Certified Honda Tech status.

      Did you think about checking the oil level?? I've seen a lot of people that wouldn't read the dipstick and just dump oil into the crankcase. Overfilling the crankcase can
      cause oil smoking. Granted it's not the only thing but you should always check the easy things first.... and changing the oil is a lot easier than doing a T/E overhaul.

    • @TynkaTyme
      @TynkaTyme  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bubba Mcdonald on this particular machine, all i did was replaced valve seals (intake and exhaust), piston rings, cylinder gasket, head gasket. If it’s smoking, it’s either piston rings or valve seals unless your cylinder is in bad shape. If the cylinder is out of round oil will get past your rings. Keep in mind if it was smoking badly before you replaced those parts, it’s probable that oil build up is in your exhaust and you need to ride it a lot to burn all the oil that’s sitting in your exhaust.
