I shared this only surviving "Candid Opinion" show with WSAV TV for Johnny's birthday, 2016. The station aired this on November 18th(Johnny's birthday) Thanks go to James Power for uploading this to TH-cam. David Oppenheim- Mercer historian, Savannah, GA- Ralph Price, moderator, died several years ago. He interviewed Mercer many times on radio and TV. Johnny thought a lot of him.
I knew Ralph Price in later years through the local organization" Friends of Johnny Mercer" in Savannah, GA, where I grew up. Ralph had been on local TV news in Savannah since 1962 and interviewed Johnny for local TV and Radio when Mercer visited his hometown several times a year, to visit his mother, sister, brothers and Savannah relations. I came across this 3/4 in. studio video tape of "Candid Opinion" following Ralph's passing several years ago. Ralph's children asked me to inventory his audio and video personal collection. I then shared this only surviving "Candid Opinion" show with WSAV TV(where it was originally video taped) on Johnny Mercer's birthday several years ago. The station aired this segment on the evening news that night. and again at 11:00 local news. Apparently the originator of this TH-cam channel recorded the segment and graciously shared it with the general public, which makes me very happy. David Oppenheim, Johnny Mercer Historian
Ralph Price was a well known local newscaster in Savannah for many years, first having come to the city in 1962. He knew Johnny for many years and was Johnny's first choice of local news reporters when visiting family in Savannah. I grew up watching Ralph on the WSAV local news broadcast. Ralph passed away here in Savannah several years ago unfortunately. He was a real gentleman , extremely honest and well versed in all kinds of music. He is still missed by many locals.
Guess that you didn't grow up in Savannah Jim. Ralph was a great newscaster, not like the "grinning idiots" of most new "entertainers" of today. Ralph interviewed was SO well respected in this City for years and years. He also was a true jazz and pop music aficionado. I learned SO much from him.
NOT Boring. Mercer enjoyed being asked these questions. I know this from talking often with his daughter and grandson. Current music(excuse me, noise) publishers have done their best to shove aside the real melodic American music that Mercer, Carmichael, Arlen, Van Heusen and other of that period, truly "crafted" instead of simply churning out garbage.
