    Thanks! I watched this video back 7 years ago when I first picked up my yashica635. It was very useful back then and I recently found this video again :) I never thanked you back then so thanks! I’m happy to say my yashy has taken hundreds of photos since then and is my favorite camera that I own. I hope your doing great and thanks again.

      Hi Tim I'm really glad the video has been of help to you. I've just had a look and I see that I have had over two point one million hits in total on the site and do now there's been very very few negative comments. Enjoy the camera and TH-cam.All the very best . . . Andy

    Good luck with the repair. As I said in the video the only photographs that I've ever taken that have found their way on to the front covers of magazines were taken on that camera. It was a pleasure to ‘setup the shot’ on that ground glass screen.
    Kind Regards ...Andy

    Still one of the best 635 reviews on TH-cam.
    You CAN fit a cable release. Buy a Nikon F2 / AR2 cable release, remove the little ring that surrounds the shutter release button on the 635 (tip: slide it along the release cable or put it in a VERY secure place so you don't lose it!) then screw on the Nikon adaptor and there you go! Excellent for tripod shots.

    Andy: I found this video by chance, I have the same camera and accessories, manuals and even the box I have 30 years, the camera was a gift from a relative when I was 12, this afternoon on a FORUM (canonistas) someone said that your video was EXCELLENT I was looking for information to sell on EBAY, but seeing your video I understood many things about it and NOW I do not want to sell, need the money but rather stay the camera, and eat my shoes THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO (greetings from madrid)

    Thank you for the video. I bought one in early 1967 for $45 at the US Army PX on Ft Eustis, VA. It was my only camera for over 10 years. Only used the 35mm adapter a couple of times and never bought the telephoto kit. Mine developed a light leak which I never had fixed. Still have the camera and it sits on a shelf as a good conversation piece.

    Very nice informed video, thank you for posting. I just bought one on eBay and cannot wait to try it. I am a camera collector/photographer, and I think having a camera that allows you to use both film formats is a wonderful advantage for any serious photographer. not sure if the one I picked up has the 35mm conversion kit, I see some online 35mm kits if it does not come with it in the camera.

    That’s a really good question, and one I’ve never really thought about.
    I was given the camera and lenses many years ago and I never had any details with the telephoto lens.
    I seldom used any auxiliary lens but I never compensated, I just used a light meter reading and set the aperture and speed accordingly.
    I used Ektachrome and they came out correctly exposed so I guess the compensation was built the ‘f’ rating of the lens??
    Like I say, I never thought about it.

Really hard to store that camera, NOT !!! Wish you would have shown us the winning photos at least, it would have at least been a great selling point ! Anyway, a beautiful camera. Andy,
    I just recently acquired a standard Yashica-Mat model TLR camera. It's the original Mat model that has no light meter or need for a battery. Anyway, I wanted to let you know that my cable release actually works with my Yashica-Mat. The cable release is an "overlapping" type which goes over the shutter release button and screws around the threads of the small bushing around the shutter button. I'll try to make a video of my TLR sometime. I really think 120 will be better than 35mm :).

  • @AndyDaviesByTheSea
    @AndyDaviesByTheSea  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @amarya86 Hi I'm glad that this has encouraged you to try out the old camera, be aware the mistake you'll make (I did it many times) is you'll forget to wind the film on after taking the shot and you'll double expose. I used to put a piece of paper in the viewfinder to say "I've wound it on" otherwise I would wind it on again and waste a frame, the other tip is always use a tripod with this camera.
    Good Luck

    Hi, well what fabulous feedback! at the time of writing this some 19,000 people have looked in on the video and I guess it’s must have helped some of them but I must say it’s nice to hear good things said about my efforts, thank you.
    As I say in the video, ‘the only times I got on the front pages of technical magazines was when I used this camera and a tripod.’ Take some good pictures and sell them so you can eat again.

    continued from 1 of 2 .... To release the take up spool pull out the knob, on the top left-hand side, in line with the end of the take up spool. To remove 35mm cassette and it’s adaptor you have to pull out the knob that’s in line with the cassette on the left then, with that out of the way unscrew the plastic device that’s in line with the cassette spool the device is on the right. I hope that helps

    @leevhfb Hi there
    Thanks for the comment. As I say in the video, the only times I’ve had my photographs onto the front covers of magazines have been with this camera, I’d always submit a 2-1/4” transparency in a black mount, they look stunning.
    I don’t know if you can still get proper ‘wet prints’ from transparencies, again they used to be fabulous. It’s not an ‘action camera’ use it for those shots you want to take your time over, I always used a tripod.
    Kind Regards ... Andy

    @AndyDaviesByTheSea I was thinking of some slight drawbacks with using 35mm film in a TLR camera. It might be difficult to shoot with the 35mm film and have all the image's subject matter contained within the small red rectangle. Also, I was thinking that there might not be any easy way to take pictures horizontally (landscape) with 35mm film. With the 120 film, the prints are square, so you never have to worry about horizontal vs. vertical images.

    Hi I'm sorry to have taken so long to get back to you but I missed your question.
    The additional lens was marked "Telephoto" it was probably equivalent to about an 85mm lens on a 35 mm camera.

    You’re right in each of your comments. Life’s a compromise, it’s nicer to use the camera with 120 roll film rather than 35mm but at least it has the flexibility to uses either format which at the time of manufacture was probably state-of-the-art technology. I don’t know how old the camera is but I think that I had it for 30 or 40 years. I wonder where the technology will be in 2042 or 2052?

    Hi there. I can’t remember if it counted up or counted down but the frame numbers are read off on the dial on the left (when standing behind the camera) have a look at the clip at around 4 minutes 40 sec and you’ll see the silver knob/dial with the black numbers on it.

  • @The1970sInfatuate
    @The1970sInfatuate 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd prefer to have a TLR camera with a film transport crank rather than just an advance knob. There's no way to take accidental double exposures since the shutter is primed when the crank is wound counter-clockwise after you wind it clockwise to advance to the next frame. Also, I was researching cable releases, and I found out that there was an "overlapping" type of cable release where you had to remove the ring around the shutter button and screw a cable release over the shutter button.

    Hi there, just like 35mm film you can have either negative or (positive) slide film, some of the best prints I’ve ever had have been produced from 2-1/4" colour transparencies.

    Hi there, I was always perfectly happy with the quality as I guess that you effectively using a smaller proportion of the lenses to gather the image (not sure if that’s 100% correct) and the closer to the middle of the lens you can work the better.
    As I say a I think that reasoning is sound but maybe there’s an optical expert who could confirm the fact. Either way it was good for 2-1/4 inch square and equally good for 35mm.

    Cheers

  • @The1970sInfatuate
    @The1970sInfatuate 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @AndyDaviesByTheSea Also, the lens has an 80mm focal length, so you might have to stand back kind of far to fit the subject matter inside the small rectangle. And then there's the extra complication with the viewing lens vs. the taking lens. How do you know how high or low to position the camera so you don't have the top or bottom edges of pictures cropped too far? There were small shorter lines inside the red rectangle that might have to do with that, but I don't know.

  • @The8TrackChap
    @The8TrackChap 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh well, at least the aperture adjustment knob doesn't have detents in it, so you can easily set the aperture inbetween two numbers. I have the standard "Yashica-Mat" model circa 1957-1968.

    Hi there.
    To strip out the 35mm running gear, you just reverse fitting instructions, so remove the gate pull out the small silver rewind release knob, second one down on the left side, hook you finger through the aperture in the gate and pull it out towards you, it cloud be tight but make sure the knob in line with the sprockets is pulled out...
    continued see 2 of 2

    Hi there, if you are going to use the ‘point and shoot’ finder then you would preset the focus to the distance your subject is at and for anything other than very close shots that be fine. It helps to try and estimate distance, for instance you can get an idea of how long your lounge is, how long your garden is etc. Either pace it out or measure it and just get a better ‘feel’ for distance, the more you practice the more accurate you’ll get.

    Hi there, I’ve looked on Google for the front cover of some magazines that were taken with the camera but I can’t find them. My favourite is a close-up picture of a guy with goggles and a red hard hat on with a ‘CIH’ log on it, he’s holding a red hot steel bar about 3 inches from his nose. I took it against a black background. That was on the front cover of ‘Factory Equipment News’ in the UK quite some years ago. That was a tripod shot.

    Just sold a Yashica 635 and the buyer told me mine was broken because the 120 wind knob can "ratchet" backward. I noticed your 635 has a big arrow by it. And I think I noticed it slip back a bit when you were first winding the film on the spool. Is this the way the 635s work or is mine "defective?" Thanks!

    Hi there, I'm sorry I can’t remember the name of the lenses. If your lenses fits one port but not the other I wonder if the bayonet slot on the camera is damage, if you have a close look you’ll see that there are 3 (I think) slots or grooves that hold the lens. If the camera has had a knock it could have bent one of the bayonet fixings in just a little bit.
    Hope that helps you.

    Hi again
    Well I didn’t do very well on the sale of the camera; I should have put a reserve on it. I sold it on eBay and it went back to Japan, the buyer was delighted and I like to think that it’s gone to someone who will get pleasure from owning it and maybe buys the odd roll of film to put through it.

    Hi there, I can’t remember which is was now and by the way I’m no expert and I don’t think I could tell the difference anyway. My own view is that even a shaky blurred image can be great if it captures the moment, so I never bothered too much about names on equipment, mind you, maybe that might have been different if I could have afforded a Hasselblad. Believe it or not I’ve had photographs published that were taken with a plastic lens. Regards ... Andy

    No, I'm sorry. It now belongs to a camera collector in Japan; hopefully he’ll get a lot of pleasure out of it. Kind Regards ... Andy

    Let me toss a little reality on this praise fest. The 635 is an early Yashica design from the 1950s. It's combines simple (crude) design and engineering with a better than average build quality. So, what's there tends to work, but what's there doesn't work that well. Almost all of them mount a 3-element lens (Yashinor) supplied by Lauser, which specialized in providing the lowest quality lenses to Japanese camera makers of the lowest cost cameras. The whole 35mm adapter kit thing is a loose copy of a Rollei device. it's as pointless here as it is on a Rollei. Frankly, the lens is so deeply average that any enlargement from a 35mm frame is going to be "soft". I bought one of these, full kit with carrying case in mint condition, took it on one trip, enlarged two 6x6cm negative to an 11x14 inch print. I discovered that what I first thought was a focus problem was just a crappy lens problem. After that first roll, I consigned the kit without comment at my local store for resale with no reserve price and put my trip negatives in the trash.
