While I plan to buy a used ARE camper shell (or build my own), I just did 1000 miles from San Diego up the 395 almost to bridgeport and camped at placed in between. The setup was very similar and meals were relatively simple. I slept in the bed all but one night when we camped near a stream in Kennedy Meadows and the mosquitos were in full effect. One bin with all the cooking gear. A table. A coleman propane stove. 20lb gas tank, a chair, 2qty 5 gallon water jugs. A cooler. A sleeping bag. 2 sleeping pads, a tent. A bag of clothes. Fly rod, regular fishing rod, and some lures. Simple.
If you ever guys need any info on what roads to take in the Owyhee’s. Shoot me a message. I know it like the back of my hand. It’s my back yard. I can tell you where to cross the river. Or what roads are impassable. Have fun!

Great video! I love seeing other folks exploring deep Eastern Oregon where I work for part of the year. If it's the spot I'm thinking of that road isn't any better from the other side. A big chunk of it is washed out.

So many places out there to see. No matter how many years I spend time out there in the Owyhee country, I'll never see it all. Most of it is just two Counties, but they are gigantic and mostly unpopulated. There is no other place quite like it. A playground for your peace of mind.
Every time I get down into this area, I am surprised again by the variety and the beauty. I am happy that there are still some large chunks where I have never set foot, so there are more discoveries to make. Hope all is well with you!
That is definitely an area I want to go back to again and keep exploring. I did my first trip there in late September last year. The weather was really nice though it had rained the morning of the day I headed in off pavement.
I absolutely love the owyhee canyon lands, most of my time there has been around the reservoir while mule deer hunting. I’ve always wanted go over there just to explore.
Thanks for sharing, we did a route down through the Owyhee's. Three fingers gulch and such and from there in the Owyhee's down past Rome and down to McDermitt that crossed two freeways this summer. Some excellent tracks and beautiful scenery IMO. Good stuff, thanks again.
I can't tell you how many people I have known and watch that has tried to drive that road. It has been washed out for a couple decades now. Pretty cool area though. Looking forward to more of this series. George.
I find it interesting, esp as in England. I bet tracks like that change over time and a sudden rock fall, or washout can drastically change it for ever
@@MrEnglischjules You bet. Even some of the more modern traversed roads have been damaged to a point no one wants to repair them. These back country roads were only maintained by the person who used them. Once they were gone there was no need for repairs. Some have been or could be repaired by local materials, but if it requires a dozer it probably won't be done.
Haha, it *looked* viable from the satellite imagery. 😆 While routes failing is not ideal, I do like scouting these places with my own eyes. If someone had told us that road was washed out, we might never have come out the way we did and would've missed some other stuff. I'm happy to have pushed this far out and walked that diminishing trail with my own two feet. 🙂

I have come into that area from the east and west. Pretty cool area, as I am sure you found out. I have not seen how this route pans out yet, but if Primal needs some suggestions I could help. Scouting ahead on foot is sometimes the only thing that saves you. I went down a wash under a highway once, my rig just fitting through. I didn't scout but got lucky that the other side opened up. Could have been a disaster, so these days I always try to remember to get out and peek around that next corner to see if I fit or can turn around. Backing up long distances with a trailer is just no fun.
Favorite thing about your channel is seeing something other than Jeeps and Tacoma's. I appreciate the inspiration to continue to save so I can also do some of this. Hopefully one day i can reach out and be a pleasure if youd join for an adventure.
Great channel. I'm transitioning from motorcycle (KLR 650) to '07 Tacoma. Never appreciated how motorcycles are so much more versatile than trucks. At least I don't fall over now.
Donald, I like your little stove for cooking. I have one similar, all weight saving. I always try to stay as light as possible. If I dont use something often, I take it out of my truck. Also a Nissan but in South Africa known as a Navara. Mine is a diesel model. I like your front bumper setup.

Great video! Had a similar expeirence while being out a couple of weeks ago. The road just kept getting smaller and smaller, not as small as the one you drove on. But, too smal for my Subaru 😅
I see wildlife on most trips, but often can't get the camera onto it quickly enough. On this trip, I saw lots of deer, lots of chukar, assorted hawks/eagles/falcons/osprey, lizards, wild horses, a badger (first time ever!). Oh yeah and crawdads LOL. I had footage of two wild horses I cut from this video because they were pretty far away and it just wasn't that interesting. The badger was a few days later and will show up in a future episode. 🙂 On other trips I have seen elk, coyote, cougar, and bear, but these are all super shy animals that move away extremely quickly and are even harder to capture on film.
1. Metal Gas Cans? How are you securing them? 2. I have been thinking of making a basic 2x4 frame/drawer like that with folding legs. maybe pull it out as an extension or maybe pull it out as a free standing table.
This is a temporary, improvised setup. The plan is to fab a rear bumper with jerry can holders. For this trip they were secured with BihlerFlex bungees, sometimes referred to as "the perfect bungee." They got the job done.
I believe I saw an older TH-cam vid of a group who were turned back on that exact same road. Right along the west side of the river, got too narrow for their group to get through. I will try to find the link and send it to you.

No significant issues per se. The gas mileage isn't as good as the Subaru, and the turning radius is terrible, but I knew about those going in. Congrats on the Frontier, those details aside, I really love mine.

DONALD! I very much so hope you read this comment. First, i love your content. Ty for what you do. Now, one of the reasons im so passionate about your channel is i too drive a frontier. It was a driving factor on how i stumbled across your content in the first place. A question i have for you though. Could you do a video detailing you likes and dislikes about the truck. Has it impressed you? Reliability wise, have you had issues? Things you changed to make overlanding more possible (not camper, strictly truck related). Would you buy it again or something else? As a fellow frontier owner I absolutely love my 19’ P4X, but sadly the rest of the community prefers tacomas and other vehicles more than the frontier. As such, theres just not a lot out there to pick from when if comes to frontier specific products. Have you experienced this? I could go on, but you get the point. I think it would be a great video for those who are thinking about purchasing one hearing about your experience! (Reposted)
Hey Donald do you have service on your iPad or do you download all your maps before? I use onx and would like to use my iPad rather then phone but can’t seem to figure out how to run it offline. Just saw your iPad in a clip and was curious
I pre-download map data for wherever I'm going. Even with my phone, I don't have cell signal in most of these places anyway. I use Gaia GPS, which has an easy, intuitive process for downloading mapping into the mobile device while at home on wifi.

Just to th north of where you ran out of road...drive through there 30 years ago and it was scary then...there are a couple of ford's to get across. Not sure how easy it is to get up and hook up with your previous route though...I have watched people drive up the switchbacks out of there to the east.
@@softroadingthewest Yeah, I watched the rest right after I posted. If you get back out there, just a 5-10 minute drive north along the river from your camp is a hot spring...with a shower.
Well, there's not a significant economy in precooking the beef. With pasta, you have to use a lot of water, which uses a LOT of fuel to bring to a boil. Ground beef cooks up very quickly, and the juices that emerge in the cooking process add flavor to the dish, which would be lost if the meat was precooked. 🙂
Donald, super glad you've gone back to your original content of exploring remote areas and taking us along with you! All of those other diversions I skipped over! Also, FYI I I make supper every night by myself, for myself, and I don't need to film it, so, I'm not sure why you are programmed to think you need to do that for your videos? What you were doing originally is great! So, please, just stick to the basics and show us the remote parts, and the scenic hard to get to parts of the West--that's what I want to see and I'm guessing a lot of your other viewers do too.
We love all parts of his videos including the cooking parts and hope he keeps doing them. If you don’t like the cooking parts, TH-cam has this awesome feature called fast forward/skip which you could totally take advantage of when you come across things you don’t want to see.
What I was "doing originally" ? For YEARS this channel has been a mix of adventures, practical info/garage DIY, and product reviews. I understand YOU want to see the adventures, and honestly, I wish I could do that and only that. However, the TH-cam audience clearly doesn't agree with you, as my practical videos and Expo coverage get WAAAAY more views than the adventures - those are the videos that actually generate the revenue that allows me to go out and make the adventure videos you enjoy. If it was adventure only, I could not afford to do this. FWIW, I have published 47 videos so far in 2022: Product reviews: 4 Expo coverage: 7 Practical/DIY/etc: 17 Adventure: 21 Adventure videos continue to outnumber everything else. I totally understand if you skip the content that doesn't appeal to you - I would never expect everyone to watch every video. 🙂 But I'm trying to keep a roof over my kids' heads and food on their plates, and as much as I wish otherwise, making backcountry adventure films just isn't paying the bills. Thanks for understanding.

DONALD. what drone have you used on the channel? Even in the older subaru days??
Up until about a year ago, I was using a little DJI Spark I got used off eBay. Now I'm using a DJI Mavic 2 Pro, which I also purchased used off eBay.
I don’t think that narrow trail would have stopped Professor Pat Pending from the Wacky Races.

You precook the pasta,why not the grd.beef?
Well, there's not a significant economy in precooking the beef. With pasta, you have to use a lot of water, which uses a LOT of fuel to bring to a boil. Ground beef cooks up very quickly, and the juices that emerge in the cooking process add flavor to the dish, which would be lost if the meat was precooked. 🙂

Donald, super glad you've gone back to your original content of exploring remote areas and taking us along with you! All of those other diversions I skipped over! Also, FYI I I make supper every night by myself, for myself, and I don't need to film it, so, I'm not sure why you are programmed to think you need to do that for your videos? What you were doing originally is great! So, please, just stick to the basics and show us the remote parts, and the scenic hard to get to parts of the West--that's what I want to see and I'm guessing a lot of your other viewers do too.
We love all parts of his videos including the cooking parts and hope he keeps doing them. If you don’t like the cooking parts, TH-cam has this awesome feature called fast forward/skip which you could totally take advantage of when you come across things you don’t want to see.

What I was "doing originally" ? For YEARS this channel has been a mix of adventures, practical info/garage DIY, and product reviews. I understand YOU want to see the adventures, and honestly, I wish I could do that and only that. However, the TH-cam audience clearly doesn't agree with you, as my practical videos and Expo coverage get WAAAAY more views than the adventures - those are the videos that actually generate the revenue that allows me to go out and make the adventure videos you enjoy. If it was adventure only, I could not afford to do this.

Adventure videos continue to outnumber everything else. I totally understand if you skip the content that doesn't appeal to you - I would never expect everyone to watch every video. 🙂 But I'm trying to keep a roof over my kids' heads and food on their plates, and as much as I wish otherwise, making backcountry adventure films just isn't paying the bills. Thanks for understanding.
