Another tip: when tuning a string up, first tune it down to loosen the tension. If you turn it too fast and hard because of the tension, it may break. Learned that the hard way.
It's actually a lot easier than I initially thought!! Thank you for this! I accidentally broke my e string when I was trying to tune it. Since I'm a beginner violinist, I freaked out and thought that I would have to take it into my local shop. But I realized that I didn't want to pay $15 for a restringing so I decided to just look it up.
Bro I did the exact same thing, my e turned into a e flat so I thought to turn the black thing then the string just flung but luckily I was able to fix it 😅
The same thing happened to me, my E sounded flat so i tried tuning it and it just broke. I was really shocked czu it was the first time it happened to me.
I got my violin a couple of months ago second hand, and it hasn’t been played in years and I have no idea when I had to change the strings, I just felt as if it was time since the sound wasn’t that nice and the strings had discolouration, I found out at the music store you have to change them every couple of months….
@@sophiandidi9065 Once the first one goes, you know it’s only a matter of time 🤣 i had my A and E go out within two weeks both before performances. It’s the worst!!
They're not going to go into really big detail, but if you're replacing all your strings you want to tune them all equally at the same time. If your peg starts to slip down or tune down, use firm pressure and press the peg into the scroll while you turn it just a millimeter. Always save the E string for last (still tuning it equally to keep even pressure on the bridge) and go slooooooooow. I popped an E string not going slow enough lol
@@nomadichef216 I'm sorry 💜 that E string is super easy to snap. I played guitar first before violin (I had to check which video this was 🤣) and it's the same for that too. That danged high E string on both! Lol
PTL for this video. Had my violin 2 weeks and the g sting just popped out of the tuner. I was freaking out! I’m gonna go try this. Thank you for this video!
Tip for tuning with pegs! Make sure to push the peg in as your tuning so your peg stays in place! Tuning can be hard but once you master it is rewarding. Also if you want to learn to tune by ear my best tip is to listen to the sound waves. I know it sound crazy but if you listen closely you can hear the sound waves and you will know when the instrument is in tune by the sound waves.
I broke mines today when I just got it because I tried to tune it😭 I’m gonna ask my orchestra teacher to help me out. I’m also scared cuz my mom doesn’t know and she’s the type of mom that will be sooooo mad Edit: omg I’m so happyyyyy my orchestra teacher fixed it and when my mom found out, she wasn’t even mad🤪😂
For me, unwinding the tension on each string works via the general-tuning pegs works well, the strings stay in place based on the direction of the spherical metallic end of each string and become undone when doing this; please be sure to install your strings in proper descending order, you'll notice a gradual reduction in diameter -E-A-D-G->
Geared tuners & a string winder ought to speed things up a notch. I use Helicore Strings on my 5 String Cello because the smaller diameter & steel rope core allows me to have enough control over the strings w/ my bow.

Then my next string snapped Apparently it was normal for the string to snap when beginning. But what if someone was a pro at playing rhe violin, and that this violin may have been their 7th one or so? I began losing hope and thought the violin wasn’t for me-
Hi friend! I hope you kept playing, I'm replying to a very old comment. Violins are touchy instruments that don't like temperature or humidity changes. They like to be out and about frequently. I've been trying to play my violin recently, which spent ten years in my closet. I've had similar problems. I was good at this back in the day! So it's not you. It's a new/ new to you instrument and new strings.
My violin has 4 fine tuners one for each string on the tailpiece. How can I remove the strings or is it the same? My strings were misaligned unfortunately I cannot return the instrument to the shop but I was thinking of getting new strings and putting them on myself since it seems doable. Many thanks in advance!

hey your videos are much helpful as i just bought new cheap one and try self learning. one thing i want to know is, when i try tuning, it goes out of tune easily unlike guitar which i play all my life. so as you said it will go out of tune ofcouse for awhile. if so than when i play note, i wont get perfect pitch right?. or is that just violin doesn't have specific notes like guitar? because if they don't get the perfect tune then every violin could be a lil different on the finger position when they play the same song. am i right? or am i just gone crazy lol???/

The wikihow page on replacing strings also has a ton of helpful information that you should read before you take off all the strings at once and get stuck trying to figure out how to fix the bridge. 😬 Best of luck.

I recommend loosening the fine tuners all the way before adjusting the big tuners. Then when its flat you can tighten the fine tuners to get in-tune
