FIXED - Pioneer Elite Receiver UE22 Error Fault Code

  • UE22 eror fault code on Pioneer Elite receiver is likely due to solder fatigue on the Texas Instruments DTS chip and not due to software update or corrupt firmware.
    I got lucky and simply fluxed and re-heated the DTS chip and the receiver seems to be working properly with no more error codes after more than 50 power-on initiations and a week's worth of usage.
    Be sure to check out these excellent videoS from another Tuber which shows thorough and very useful repair details:
    • Onkyo Receiver No Outp...
    • Onkyo TX-NR Receiver D...
    One Month UPDATE: Everything still working beautifully. To reduce further solder fatigue, I have added a heat sink to the DTS chip AND force cooling to the chip. I'm experimenting with two different fans. One is a 5V fan plugged into the USB port on the back of the receiver which turns on and off with the receiver. Another is a 12V fan powered with a wall wart. The wall wart is plugged into a power strip. The receiver power switch is left in the ON position and both the receiver and the 12V fan are controlled by the on/off switch on the power strip.

    Tried this on my SC-89 with same issue. Works perfectly now! I did all the chips just to make sure I did the right one. Thank you for the video. Much appreciated!

    Wow. This worked and my receiver is playing again. I have a slightly different model (VSX-50) and my DTS chip is not the same. I didn't use a flux pen. I just heated the chip with the same heat gun you recommended. Voila! Sound and no error 22 anymore. Even if this just lasts a day or a week I am thrilled that your video helped me. Thank you!

    Picked up a vsx 1123 for less than 50 bucks at a goodwill. It flashed the error message. I tried this and it worked! Gonna use a heat sink as well.

    I have the VSX-922 and what I did was clean the TI sound chip and surrounding area with alcohol, right now it seems to work but I think I'm going to order a heatsink and add later on as well. Fongers crossed...

    Widespread problem. This at home 'reflow' is a temporary fix unfortunately and the problem returns in weeks to months. I had this problem with a Pioneer receiver (SC-55). Some repair shops can perform a (possibly) more successful reflow using special 'no residue' flux and precise heating of both the bottom of board and top of chip. Onkyo purchased Pioneer years ago and addressed this problem with extended warranty. I was fortunate and had my logic board replaced by Onkyo, in the program that ended in 2021.

      @redsyrup1138 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't think it's a cold solder joint problem. He's heating the chip itself and that's the temporary fix. The proper fix is to replace the chip but the problem is getting the chip properly programmed. From what I understand it might be possible to dump your faulty chip and get it programmed to a good replacement but few know how to do that.

    • @snowyrain5730
      @snowyrain5730 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the initial issue is that too much heat is being generated which is causing the chips to fail. there's nothing wrong with the chips. them telling people "the chips are defective" is classic pass-the-buck.
      if you can reflow one of these and then add at least one good source of cooling, it should be fine.
      as this video shows, there's an auxiliary usb output just waiting for you to plug in an external fan... almost like they knew you might need it.... lol

      @snowyrain5730 except that TI even said those chips are subject to premature failing in 2012 (a year after they were implemeted). The heat only made it happen faster. Pioneer just chose not to recall, creating a bigger problem later on.

    My SC-1222k has the same problem with the TI chip. I have heated with a heat gun for about 2 minutes (400 degrees) and let cool. The unit works error free now. This ‘heat only’ solution appears to work for about a month of daily use. I repeat the heat procedure and it works again. Going to try some flux next time and see if that is more permanent of a fix.

    I have the same UE22 error on a Pioneer SC-68, I paid $2,000 for it back in 2013. I missed the out of warranty repair window offered by Onkyo in 2021. The best Pioneer could do was a couple hundred bucks off a retail priced replacement. I won't be buying Pioneer again. Currently considering replacing it with a Sony STR-AZ3000ES. Never had a problem with Sony equipment.

    Going to give this a whirl this weekend. Bought the heat gun and flux pen. In my case. No sound, but if I power on the unit and DON'T TOUCH any buttons on the remote to the apple TV for about 5 mins, it will work just fine. If I'm careless and rush it, by clicking on an apple tv icon and selecting an app like netflix or youtube tv (where sound is going to be emitted). Then I'm F'd. Once the unit decides it's ready to provide sound it does so with an abrupt and extremely loud deafening burst of noise coming out of speakers which lasts about 3 seconds. The after you regain your hearing, it's all good, and works perfectly until the next time you power on after a long down time period. So in my case it seems like the unit needs to warm up, not cool down. If I don't rush it, there is no loud noise and it works like a charm after being warmed up. I will report back after I perform the surgery and likewise after some runtime.
