Bravo bravo, that's what you call fault finding to the Nth level. I just loved watching your expertise, these days are a throw away society, well done, all the best.
I am amazed at the complexity of this monster AVR. And the ironic part is that about 90% of its back connectors would remain unused most of the time as the end user would most likely just use couple of HDMI inputs. This means many if the daughter boards would also remain unused. But the protection circuit would check each of these boards and even the slightest fault even in any one of the boards would render the whole unit unusable. Just makes me wonder if the whole concept of an 'Integrated' amplifier actually makes sense. Btw, amazing troubleshooting this one. I rarely see repair techs inserting logic probes between two chips. Amazing work man. Wish you luck!!
This is a serious Rube Goldberg receiver if I've ever seen one. Great troubleshooting process...that thing must weigh a ton to move around on the bench.
Great job dude. I am facing the same problem with my Pioneer VSX-ax10ai-g. The sticky ghost of standby red light flashing and no response to the power on button.

Amazing repair, and really nice to see the insides of such a beast. Do you know if the RS232 port would output debug statements to help track down that latch up?
Wow - fantastic work! As you said, it doesn't seem like all those capacitors would bulge exactly the same amount (as they appear to have done in the video) - if caused by heat the ones closer to the fan would be less bulged. Maybe look for manufacturer's literature with pictures of their products?
Hello. Your videos are very informative. I would like to ask how do you learn about troubleshooting circuits. Its easy to replace blown capacitors but other than that I would like to learn.
Superb work! I always enjoy listening/watching you. Question: what is the relationship between the switch mode power supply and the two large transformers (which I assume are for a linear power supply). Thanks!
Fabulous video. I have one of these amps and you have just scared the crap out of me.... 🙂 All jokes aside, I would love to see your video putting it all back together.
For the power supply how capacitor you using I see that lifetime of some one are 2000 hour and some one 10000 how are the duftend and which one you recommend ?
I dont think i've ever come across electrolytic caps with an as-made from factory bulge. Might be worth investigating the brand & datasheet for one of them. Never say never though coz all of them with an identical bulge and in different areas of the unit.......you just dont see that! Expensive to change them all!
This is an awesome unit with issues tho. My works but not the hdmi no inputs can be seen. So much that the display doesn't show anything but a white screen. Any thoughts?
Test those caps, since you are in deep enough into it already. I'd bet that even if many are weak, the unit isn't worth the cost of repair. The blue power led working after re-solder may be telling another story: there may be other failed solder joints. Unless it was a result of putting more boards back into the chain and completing that circuit. These units have more complexity than a home PC!
That unit is worth about $3500, so I think recapping it would definitely be worth it. It just needed a hard reset to get going again, although That LED might have just had a failed joint like you said. I've worked on a few high-end Vifa Stockholm speakers with a similar issue. After I picked apart the first one, I realized (after a long session of research) that it just required a hard reset as well. Bitter-sweet realization.😬😝
Terrific diagnostic work! I have one of these and it's similarly stuck in a protection mode. Can you tell me how you did the manual reset? I've searched the web and cannot find directions for the reset anywhere. And additionally, would you be interested in repairing my unit? It's a shame that this big beautiful receiver is just wasting space. It deserves to be put back into service if possible.
I have the same unit with similar issues. It powers up for a few seconds and then shuts down. Then the phase control light flashes. I called every possible repair shop where I’m from and no one will touch it. It really is a shame because up till now it operated flawlessly but now it may as well be a boat anchor.

Oh, and one last thought, do you think it would be possible to use the amplifier section on its own, without the upper receiver section? It's a nice 10 channel amp, and could be used for any number of applications if it could be setup as a separate unit.
