Flo Lum I make barely like risotto! Very simple and very delicious. Just toast 1 cup of barely in some melted butter and then slowly add in broth of your choice about 1 cup at a time until all creamy and the barely is tender. Then finish with cheese, lemon zest and fresh herbs. Totally delicious!
Flo this is going to be perfect. I’ve been looking for a good beef and barley soup recipe and I can tell this will be it. Using the instant pot will be a bonus. Nice job!! Btw, anyone and everyone reading this will agree, Flo... you have such a great laugh. So nice.
I made this for dinner tonight (a dark and stormy night!), and it was a massive hit. Half gone in one sitting, the remainder for lunch tomorrow. Thanks!
Hello Flo and Dude, you are cooking one of my favorite meals for the colder months, keep-em coming, y'all have a wonderful week ahead, take care and God bless you and your Family always. 🇺🇸🇨🇦☕️🍽👼🏻👼🏻
I absolutely LOVE that you under seasoned the soup!!!! I agree you can always add more to taste but you can't take it out! I love barley and I'm always looking for new ways to make into a delicious meal
Excellent call, Flo. Being on the cusp of Comfort Food Season, you chose a comfort food that can be enjoyed over and over in the coming months. it's gratifying to see pearl barley included in this recipe -- it tends to be ignored and unappreciated these days. In the aftermath of an occasion featuring roast turkey my mother would make turkey/barley soup from the leftovers. It was one of the gustatory highlights of my childhood, and your recipe today stimulated thoughts of it. Thanks for the memory.
Ohhhhh BOY guys!! What a scrumptious recipe! With Autumn arriving soon, this soup sounds so g@@d!! And Flo, you have an amazing, twinkling smile. Thank-you both, for sharing this with us & God bless🙏🏼❣
I've been on a beef stew kick. I'm going to try this as well. It's starting to be that time of season for things like this. When I was in high school, I was glad my mom picked me up...those kids were crazy...well maybe not all of them...glad your'e feeling better Flo.
Your recipes always live up to the 'Simple, Ordinary and Joyful' motto and this Beef Barley Soup is no exception. I can already 'taste' how delicious the soup will be. Indeed someone mentioned California is still super hot so I will save this recipe till later in the season when hearty soup is called for. Please share a recipe of Clam Chowder - another of my favourite ! Thank you for your hardwork and generosity to share..
This looks so good, a must try!! And I thoroughly enjoy hearing Dude, honestly, taste and explain, the finished result. I love that you guys are "all in " from start to finish. Looking forward to having your cook book in hand.
This was the first thing I made in my IP, very similar recipe. If I never make anything else in the IP (I have, of course) this soup makes it all worth it. It was fantastic and a huge hit with everyone who’s had some. Looking forward to some of your other recipes, especially fall/winter meals. Summer is all about grill & smoker alas I’ll be under 3 feet of snow in a couple of months 🇨🇦
Thanks Flo for another great recipe. Will file this away for when the weather gets a bit colder...I live in Maryland & it's in the low 80's. FYI - What I do with my tomato paste is freeze it in the can first. Let it defrost for a few minutes, cut both ends with the can opener and push out a perfect tube of frozen paste. Cut off what you need for the recipe, place in a freezer bag and pop it back into the freezer!
Flo you are on a roll lately with these great recipes. I LOVE beef barley soup! That and tomato basil and Lentil my top 3. I have to make this soon, been awhile since i’ve had it. Thank you and keep up the great work! 😊
I love your video's.'Ii honestly believe you and your husband have the chops and banter to do an actual television show. I love that you came through Thunder bay and did the Hoito thing too. Hope you tried some of the other restaurants as well. Thunder Bay has a grass roots thing going on for food that is inspiring. our little city is turning it around and making a comback.
Thanks so much, Tom! I wish we had more time in Thunder Bay but we were only there for 1 night. Hope we can make another trip out that way. It's incredibly beautiful!
We barbecued last week and had a batch of chicken as well as steak leftover and it made me so sad that the steak was all gone and I couldn't turn it into beef and barley soup. Now I have to get some stew meat instead. Perfect timing, it is rainy and cool here too. I feel sorry for the people in the lower US who are in a bad heat wave so I'll enjoy some soup up here for them. Glad you are feeling well again, Flo and I hope nobody else in the house came down with it. Crazy that summer is over so quickly! BTW...do you have one of those two-level stainless steel pot-in-pot cookers for your IP? I have one and there are so few videos with different recipes for them beyond meatloaf and mashed potatoes or chicken and rice. Thank you for the video and have a great week!
Thanks, Molly! I don't have a 2 level PIP cooker. Will have to think more about that way of cooking. The problem is often the two items don't necessarily cook for the same amount of time and I'm pretty picky about making sure things are cooked just right.
No surprise here - soup looks yummy and right up my alley! I make a "hamburger soup" which is a recipe I got out of an old "Canadian Living" cookbook magazine. It's different than your beef and barley soup in that it has a 28 oz can of tomatoes and I always add corn 'cause my son *loves* corn. The point here is that the recipe does not contain barley, but I always add about 1/3 cup 'cause we love barley in my house. Since there are only 2 of us, the big pot lasts a few days. The first day, it is definitely like a soup. However, on reheating it, the barley causes it to thicken up and it becomes more like a stew. 😊
This recipe looks delicious.....It's still more like Summer than Fall here in Maryland, although it's been beautiful and 80 degrees. That's still a bit too warm for me to be having soup, so I'll save this for maybe a month or two from now....Again, I'm looking forward to the next cookbook...Thanks again for all you and Dude do. Cheers!....P.S. Wow, High School starts with 8th Grade! Back in the Stone Age, when I grew up, Elementary School was K-6. Jr. High (as it was called, which is now Middle School) was 7-9. High School was 10-12....That's how it was for someone born in 1952. LOL
LOL! It's probably the same in the US but here in Vancouver, we have elementary K-7, high school 8-12. No middle school. Other cities nearby have Jr. High or middle school though.
Great Flavor and easy to make. Really enjoyed the meal. Hint for quick pressure release using flat handle wooden spoon, insert through the Instant Pot handle and press down the release valve. Keeps from getting burnt. The valve will lock down at one point. by the way my wife really enjoyed also would like me to make again soon.
Another good looking recipe I will definitely try this winter. (I will probably sub the barley for potato because I never cook with it. I wouldn’t want it to go bad.). I’ll have your book by then. Great tip by the way! 😉
This school year is a bitter/sweet one for me. My daughter Willow has started her senior year of High School. I believe by now my existence embarrasses her 😂😂 but at least I know she loves me. With the our weather starting to feel like Fall, this stew looks like a great recipe!
This looks so darn good! It’s 102F out here in California today, but I would gladly have a bowl of this! Do you have a recommended replacement for the barley if we are gluten free?
Flo! I also have a recipe I love called Hearty Beef and Barley Soup! It isn't the same as yours but I love beef and barley and I am going to make this one in 'Inez' the InstantPot very soon. Thank you so much for sharing. Hope all is well at the House of Lum!
Hi Flo, love your recipes and your husband is nearly as cool as you :) can I ask if you quick release or a natural release please. Also, living in Europe out tomato paste comes in screw to tubes saving on waste but love your freezing idea too.
My approach to late-Fall and Winter: I've mentioned before that I broke my arm in a fall at the market last month. Things are improving noticeably day to day. But I still can't slice and dice nor grate nor hoist stock pots, Instant Pots, frying pans, or dutch ovens yet. Oh, well: I continue to dream and collect ideas. That's where your soup recipes (Mom's Beef, Mom's Pork, etc) feed my mind if not my kitchen time! I *love* making soups, especially in Fall, Winter, and early Spring. Get out the big stock pot, toss in seared chicken, pork, or beef, add in sautéed onions and garlic, beef stock for beef soup, chicken for chicken or pork; then add chopped whatever veggies (carrots, celery, onions+garlic, zucchini, tomatoes, potatoes, etc und so weiter). Whatever floats my boat and I spotted at the market. Sliced Baby Bella mushrooms are a favorite add late in the soup-making drill. Thyme, Basil, Rosemary, etc. Move the soup (after cooling) to large Tupperware containers into the fridge and then, every other day or so, put a couple of scoops of rice or pearled barley into my rice cooker, cover with some water and soup, and then press "Start". An hour later it has turned into at least two and maybe three meals with zero further attention. (I'm single and so have much less impetus to present variations in meals day-to-day.) This Beef and Barley Soup from you fits right into that drill. I can't wait to be able do it myself. Love to you and The Fam! ~~Kris
The one thing I’m disappointed with in the instant pot is not being able to get a good sear on the meat. I really believe the browning adds a tremendous amount of flavor to the meat and the “hot” sauté is just not hot enough to really sear imo! Love your videos Flo!
I have everything in the house to make this tonight except for the barley. I have celiac disease and though I love barley, I can't have it. Any ideas on a replacement? NEVER MIND! I just read I can use quinoa as a replacement for the barley. Thanks for the amazing recipe. UPDATE! I made this for dinner tonight and it was the best vegetable beef soup I've ever made. I will have quarts to freeze for later.
as someone who lives in the Fraser Valley I hope your daughter has survived her daily commute to and from school in that horrible junkie haven of a city. I don't blame you for walking her 1 bit. I am a full grown man and I am nervous walking in Vancouver in certain areas
I’m making beef barley soup and my question is - can I use either the “pressure cook” button or the “soup button” and if so is the time frame the same for both buttons? This is my first attempt at making a recipe using my instant pot duo plus. To tell you the truth I’ve avoided using pressure cookers my whole life but now at age 78 ....I decided I wanted to learn how not to be intimidated by this cooking system. Thanks for your help!
Most of the buttons are essentially just preset for a specific time. I hardly ever use the presets and instead use the pressure cook button and enter the time I want. Hope that helps!
I put barley in my (yummy secret ingredient) miso vegetable soup. It’s delish. Also put in my turkey/rice & veggie soup. Heads up Flo & Dude. This is the only way I'll eat barley. What better way is there? Hope you enjoy this hearty soup, just in time for Fall! Happy Sunday!
Today is my birthday so this will be my goto soup for this year! Gonna try to get my gf to make this with me. Super easy to make.
Happy birthday, Duncan!
In Costa Rica we make a drink with rice and barley (almost like horchata) called Resbaladera which means slippery one b/c it’s a little thick
Question, why the black tape on your appliance?
My favorite soup ever. Trying this Soon..
I love winter cooking the best or Autumn cooking.
I'm only in Ashcroft but it's getting colder in the mornings, maybe we'll have an Indian summer. I can't wait to hunker down for winter though.
Flo this is going to be perfect. I’ve been looking for a good beef and barley soup recipe and I can tell this will be it. Using the instant pot will be a bonus. Nice job!!
Btw, anyone and everyone reading this will agree, Flo... you have such a great laugh. So nice.
My absolute favorite soup - Beef with Barley! Simple, Ordinary, Delicious. Thanks Flo and Dude. I love your channel.
Thanks Flo for sharing your beef barley soup, good for cold winter...awesome..I am from Singapore, now living in Vancouver BC with kids
I made this for dinner tonight (a dark and stormy night!), and it was a massive hit. Half gone in one sitting, the remainder for lunch tomorrow. Thanks!
I love building a pot of soup. One of my favorite things to make.
Made this today. Yum! Thanks Flo!
Great recipe. You need bowl cozies so you don’t burn your hands. Thanks from London, Ont🙏 👍🇨🇦
I'm usually not a barley person, but this recipe has me thinking I should try it again. Thank you!
Yummy! I love soups. I could eat this all day. Thank you for the recipe

just watched your video on how to make smashed potatoes. i enjoyed it so much and was hoping you guys were still making videos. glad to see you are :)
really enjoyed this one. the cooking was good and i love the taste test/review.

Oh and the Beef Barely is devine! Thanks for this one
I made this soup in the instant pot today and wanted to let you know that this is the very best beef soup ever. Thanks so much.

No surprise here - soup looks yummy and right up my alley! I make a "hamburger soup" which is a recipe I got out of an old "Canadian Living" cookbook magazine. Like you, I always find garlic burns if you add it with onion, so I wait until the end of my sautéed veggies, too.

Sure, why not?

i ❤️ beef barley soup! barley is practically identical to oats nutritionally, btw. plus: they don't taste like cement!
I put barley in my (yummy secret ingredient) miso vegetable soup. It’s delish. Also put in my turkey/rice & veggie soup.

I thought new cookbook was all Asian family recipes.
It will definitely include my family recipes but it is not all Asian.
Like the diversity! Any family favorites is ok by me!!!as long as it tastes good!,😊
Whuuuut??? High School starts at grade 8 up there. ?
Yes... Elementary is K-7, high school 8-12. No middle school.
"Mouthfeel". Dude either brews beer or knows beer.
You put too many hashtags under your video, can’t access date of video or see ingredients. Don’t use so many hashtags. TY
I liked to watch you cook... but why does he get all this screen time? He was wasted time - I don't think we really needed his analysis of your soup!
It’s ok - he’s funny 😊
Tell your husband to leave his comments out of your video, I don't like his remarks, 😢😮
All thoth at water just goes to show how much water is in the meat that we buy ...uggh
Little more barley, it’s cheap !
