We flew to Indianapolis in ‘93 to see Nigel in the Indy 500, we saw him with his family in the driver roped off area and shouted for an autograph, as soon as he heard our accents he told his ppl to let us in and sat with us asking where we’re from, took photos with us and signed everything we asked him…..totally star struck as a youngster we were all blown away and he made our trip. The only driver in the 80's and early 90's who wasn't afraid of Senna and Senna knew he couldn't get to him. For that I think Senna always felt Nigel was a true challenger to him and gave him a lot of respect.
I will second that. Mansell was a hero of mine growing up and seen so many interviews. He is such an amazing but emotional man and you got the best out of him. This is such a wonderful interview. An icon of the sport.

Went from a cottage in England oo a villa in a tax haven 👊like most rich people 😅 only the poor pay tax That's why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer 👌
Great guy Nigel. I was fishing on one of his lakes near his golf course back in the late 90's, and he came along and helped me land a big carp I had been fighting with for a while. It was such an experience to catch such a nice fish, and have Nigel Mansell to help me land it. I sat there stunned and speechless for about an hour after my heart rate came down again. Thanks Nigel 😀
Nigel Mansel was one of the most thrilling F1 drivers in his day . Never forget how he passes other cars where no one expected . Fantastic driver & person. Great interview ! Thanks.
@@eamobyrne1 Sadly rotten luck stopped him being 3 x World Champion, where he would have been thought of in a totally different light. Now give him a dose of good luck that a certain driver has had for a decade, and Nigel is potentially a 5 x World Champion. There are not many championship points in it.
I’ve been a Mansell fan for decades, personally witnessing so many of the events you discussed here. However I’ve never really seen an interview which I felt did him justice - until now. You absolutely nailed it, showing the true emotional family man behind the phenomenal driver that Mansell was. Many other drivers had a succession of trophy wives, Nige restricted himself to a succession of trophies! Possibly the only driver who was a match for Senna. What a legend he is, and what a great interview you gave us. xx ps the Brazilian driver whose name neither of you could remember - Rubens Barrichello
Very well put, and although i only ever went to one F1 race, it was Nige`s very first F1 win at Brands Hatch, i followed him all the way, a unique and gifted driver, and a real racer.
Mansell was my favourite, but now youve mentioned murray walker, the sound of his voice still brings a tear to my eye, he still is and forever will be f1.
Astonished how down to earth he is (still) after the career he had. He has clearly never lost touch with himself or those around him who really mattered. Amazing.
I was at every British GP from 86 through to 92 and saw Nigel win 4 times on home soil. An absolute legend of the sport and a hero of mine. Fantastic interview Jodie.
I just watched this for the second time and have come to the conclusion that its the best interview with an F1 driver I've ever seen. My heart swells with appreciation & affection for Nigel. What a life, the things he's seen and the things he achieved. Emotion, bravery, humour, love, mentors, mortality, everything of a great life is here!
I absolutely agree. Not only is this the most revealing interview with NM ever, it’s done with a great deal of affection & sincerity. Kudos, Jodie. And bloody hell, I knew he was determined & tough, but some of the tales of racing when most of us wouldn’t have been standing at all made me wince. The tragic deaths were horrible, and to lose people you liked very much yet to continue is impossible to fully appreciate, at least not by me. The number of times Nigel drove races & near-impossible manoeuvres meant fans always willed him on, knowing that, if his car was competitive, he would take some beating. Skill, courage, determination, will to win. It’s wonderful to see him looking content & I hope not in too much physical discomfort after several potentially career- if not life-ending injuries. The harsh realities are that we never fully heal & many mended injuries leave marks which hurt, frankly. He’s earned his well-loved status as a retired lion!
Nigel is a true gladiator the things he did in his life and the fact that he's still alive shows what a great human being he is. Great respect to him and what a incredible person
Fantastic, enlightening, entertaining and, at times, poignant, interview. I followed Nige in his career, but I had no idea he suffered so many serious injuries. He certainly fits his nickname of 'Il Lione'. We are lucky he survived. They were dangerous times.
I love that Nigel calls Colin Chapman 'Mr Chapman' as he introduces him into the story. Just shows how respecful and humble he is. This is such a brilliant interview, Jodie is a natural 😊 Hearing Nigel speak of his admiration for Colin was really eye opening too, I've never heard him get so emotional.
This is the best interview I have ever seen. I could listen to his stories all day. Why has nobody ever done this with Nigel before? Congratulations on this one.
What an amazing and unique interview with one of my sporting idols, it had me from tears to laughter. What never fails to amaze me is how humble he always is. A true legend.
Again, Thank You, Nigel Mansell was one of my very favourite drivers, his life and mine seemed on a similar 'Ying & Yang' pattern, as while he was repeatedly taking the second step of the world championship of the podium, my own passion for car racing was crowned as I was selected in Paris, to become a leading contender in reformulating octanes in gasoline as the lead phase-down was being enforced. The year I got the Patent for it, is the year Nigel finally got the crown. I'll never forget it!
I'm Brazilian and a huge F1 fan and I've always deeply respected Nigel Mansell's deeds and now, after having watched this program, his persona as well.
Fantastic interview. I knew about Nigel's injuries, but not the extent of them. Drivers back then were a breed apart. He and we are very lucky to still have him around. He's deservedly one of the greatest and most popular F1 drivers. Thanks for bringing us this interview, Jodie. Love your channel.
Really incredible interview. It's not often you sit and watch an interview and after a few minutes you realise you are watching someone being so completely open and relaxed. You're seeing the real Nigel. Incredibly skilled interview to get someone as private as Nigel like this. He loved this.
Thank you very much for this interview. This is my hero. One could endlessly admire Senna's talent, Prost's prudence, Fangio's historical monumentality and Clark's charming and speed. But the most charismatic and spectacular for me has always been Mansell. This is a racer who has always given incredible intensity and an incredible level of fight. And of course, his entire being could not accommodate as many championship titles as he potentially could have.
Jodie, well done for bringing this to us and letting HIM talk. You really steered this so well to bring out Nigel’s memories of his early days of racing with Lotus. Loved to hear how warmly he speaks about his almost fatherly relationship with Colin Chapman and the funny moment of regaining consciousness on the helicopter especially.
Thank you Jodi, for producing easily the best interview with "our Nige" I've ever seen. His exploits are extraordinary and driving whilst injured and laughing about feeling uncomfortable as his stitches were tearing at over 190mph. Legend.
I really enjoyed that interview. I learned some things that I didn't know about Nigel's career. Nigel's was a hero and an inspiration to many people. Such a shame he walked away from F1 after winning the Title, having had to wait so long to win it,but equally what an achievement to win the 1993 Indycar Series.
What a fantastic interview Jodie!!! I’m the same age as you and growing up Nigel was and still is my racing hero!! It was superb to see Nigel so relaxed and hear the amazing accounts of his racing career. Kudos to you for a great interview!! 👏🏎🇬🇧5
Nigel is a legend. 1991 & 1992 were probably my 2 favourite years watching F1. Watching him battle with the legendary Ayrton Senna in 1991 and just missing out on the title but then came back and dominated in 1992 with that epic Williams FW14B. After that won the IndyCar title in 1993 as a rookie. Great to see & hear from him, such a nice man and hear him talk about his career. Fantatstic video & great interview Jodie, probably the best yet. Thanks for sharing.
Oh my Oh my, One of my all time driving heroes and as is often the case with people truly deserving of that title humble with it! Thank you Jodie, best interview of the man I have ever watched! As an aside. I really love watches I can see your wearing a wonderul ebel , this tells you how sad I am, I recognised at first it by the buckle and looking at Nigels wrist It looks like a Patek Buckle, absolute class both watches! I don´t know how you do it, you just keep upping the quality of this wonderful channel!
The best ‘chat’ with any sportsperson I have ever watched. Fantastic! Nigel genuinely is the G.O.A.T on so many levels….a genuine, hard, skilled and lovely guy. A true legend.
What an amazing interview Jodie, thank you. I’ve only ever been to one Grand Prix and that was silverstone in 92 where I met my wife. A special day. Nigel a genuine legend and a good man.
I remember seeing Nigel in Formula Ford in 1977 in a Javelin JL5 and Crossle 32F. Even then he was fabulous to watch. True legend. Many thanks for another magnificent production Jodie x
The 360 at Imola was one of the most incredible racing moments I’ve seen in racing, and I’ve been watching from 1982! Much respect for Nigel Mansell’s skills. No one could over drive a car better than him.
What an amazing interview, what an amazing man. It is truly an honour and a Privilege to have lived in the same time as Nigel. Words cannot express my admiration and Love for him. Thank you Nigel for all the joy you have brought me over the years. Take care, stay safe lots of Love from Mexico.
I've listened or watched so many Nigel interviews over the years and felt there wasn't much more to learn or hear.... How wrong I was. The most wonderful interview and one that will live on forever, justifiably so. Thank you Jodie and of course, Nigel.
Welling up after 12mins, Jodie! Totally took me by surprise. You must have a talent for creating an environment in which people can open up to you - super job 🙌 Always look forward to the newest Kidd video; not least because of the diversity. Love it 👌😊
Nigel 'il Leone' Mansell was absolutely one of the best back in the day, up there with Prost & Senna. A great interview, which allowed Nigel to recollect his amazing career, without the interviewer interrupting all the time - well done to Jodie Kidd for facilitating properly 🙂
Thank you, I have laughed so hard on several occasions, Nigel is really special. I use to work in Monaco in the late eighties and you brought me back to à such amazing era and time of my life by just interviewing one of the greatest. Thanks again.
Oh my god, what a career that man had a true legend, greatest interview ever 'so far' what a place for a interview. Nigel & Damon Hill my all time favourite drivers, ps you done some background of information on that interview, great job jodie keep it up ❤️
This is one of the best interviews I’ve seen of an F1 driver. They all have their public persona, but this one. It’s quite emotional really. It felt like a “final good bye, here’s my honest recollection of events, which may not be accurate, but it’s my recollection”
Thank you Jodie for bringing the best out of Nigel. When you think you know a fair bit from watching and supporting every race you actually know sweet FA. My brother and friends swarmed onto the track at Brands Hatch for Nigel's first win. It only feels like last week. Great Memories Thank You
Mansell is the only non multiple champion (maybe Stirling Moss) to be revered alongside the legends and superstars of F1 history. He's my F1 hero..................When "Red 5" was on a charge, you could not take your eyes off the screen!
I met Nigel and his wife PIR (Phoenix International Raceway) in Arizona, I believe 1994. Really amazing, we'd just moved the Phoenix and a friend mentioned he knew the mnager at PIR and I said I'd live to meet Nigel, next thing some tickets arrive and I'm told to be at Practice at the Track at a certain time. Thinking, no way is this going to happen, I'm there and blow me Nigel gets out of the Racing Car, hops over the barrier and is guided to meet me, we spoke for some time. It was simply a magical moment I'll always remember for ever. His Wife is just a lovely person.
Why is this channel only having 70k subs, craziness. This is amazing stuff that people need to watch. From the first time I met the lovely lady JK at Goodwood, she was so kind to give up time on her day out I’ve loved all the thing she does. She’s a fantastic lady and role model to bust down those barriers to show girls can drive cars to! More need to be in pro driving. Good luck with everything you do. Luv ya Jodie 👍
What an amazing interview , Nigel is like bionic man. His journey and the fact he carried on driving with broken bones and winning is just amazing. And you asked very good questions. Nigel was a great driver and he drove when I was a kid growing up and one of my first memories of F1 is Walker calling Mansells name. How can anyone not be a fan of Nigel. This Channel has really taken off so well done
Nigel Mansell, a legend. Those were the F1 best years. Senna, Prost, etc. I will always remember Mansell chasing down Senna at the Monaco Grand Prix. Epic stupid close racing
amazing interview I meet Nigel (Got his autograph I had been chasing him around the world for 2 years just to get his mark)at the Australian open golf in 1988, and he was a truely amazing man, so friendly to the spectators
This was a great interview, Nigel got me hooked on F1 and motorsport in general in 1985 when he first drove for Williams (I was 12). He's been my sporting hero every since, was lucky to see him go by at Goodwood. Legend of the sport, and far better than his 1 title suggests, he's up there with the Senna imo. Only bad luck, and arguing with Frank prevented him from achieving more. So thanks for this
You’re incredible Nigel. We raced the Enza Indy light car at Phoenix in 1993 and well remember when you had that dreadful backward crash through the concrete wall where your hass cars gearbox made a huge hole, you are a lion with the courage to match. And still smiling. Wonderful interview both of you. God bless you Nigel and you also Jodie you both were so terrific❤
A little story for you, really enjoyed this interview, what a legend. Many years ago circa 93 ish, my italian boss acquired a Testarossa from a dealership in Wiltshire. He stated it was formerly owned by Nigel. On his way back from the dealership the day he collected it he was clocked at over 100mph and banned for a month from driving. The car sat in our company HQ and our boss gave us the incentive to perform by saying the most productive employee that month would get the Testarossa for the weekend. I won and had the car for the weekend at 20 years old! I've always wondered if indeed it was owned by Nigel.
Thanks for the great interview. Relaxed and candid. With Nigel you could always expect the unexpected and this interview illustrates that so well. I got a great photograph of Nigel winning his first ever grand prix at Brands Hatch. Years later I sent an enlargement to his home in Clearwater with a sharpie requesting his autograph ....he signed it and sent it back to me!
Jodie, this is by far the best interview I've watched in a long time. The "interviewer" must relate to the "interviewee" and you have that down!! Oh by the way, you have another subscriber as well. I couldn't leave the page without signing on! Thanks for all the work it takes for you and your crew to get it right.
He was a brilliant, brave and very fast driver. In the mid eighties we had a real treat of drivers, from the end of the Lauda era to the beginning of Senna. Piquet was a real artist of a driver, so gifted. Old Prosty was another Jackie Stewart, so smooth and clever, to boot. Mansell, though, drove with his youknowwhats.
What a wonderful interview..... and thank you Nigel for remembering Roland.... so many times Senna gets remembered, and rightly so... but Roland should not be forgotten from that weekend either. Incredible stories, and an amazing career, esepecially given some of those injuries.
It was Pironi who stalled on the line in Canada and Paletti then went into the back of him. And it was during qualifying at Hochkenheim that Pironi crashed into the back of Prost and suffered the injuries that ended his F1 career.
I was scared of Mansell growing up. The aggressive style, the mustache, the Red 5, and racing against my local boys Senna and Piquet made him the perfect sports villain to me. Later I came to admire the fact that he always delivered in every single race , win or lose. Cheers from Brazil, really miss the 1980s and early 90s F1.
Absolutely stunning interview. Learned so many new things about Nigel. Luv the respect you showed him. Thanks Jodie. (The other driver you and Nigel where trying to remember of that awful weekend in Imola 1994 is Rubens Barrichello he drove for the Jordan team at that time)
@@hughmccarry4950 Thanks for the reply Hugh. De Cesaris also drove for Jordan in that race (stood in for Eddie Irvine while he was suspended), but it was Barrichello who had the other big crash just before the pits entrance in qualifying.
What a great interview. I first started to follow F1 with James Hunt, but Nigel has always been No 1 for me - nothing beats his Williams Silverstone races, with Murray Walker & James Hunt commentating - those were the days.
Having followed Williams from 1977 and their inception at Didcot and my very first job letter that I posted out after leaving school was to WGPE in June 1978, the period of Keke and Nigel as the FW10 was improved is one of the most wonderful times - I met Nigel a few times but at the Tribute to Williams day at Brands Hatch at the end of 1986 there was a lot of fun when Nigel and Patrick Head raced Ford XR3's -not a straight panel to be seen at the end. What followed over the next years were perhaps the best days of F1 I have seen - a great interview Jodie and also brought back lots of experiences I had with F1 30+ years ago.
Brilliant interview Jodie; you’ve certainly brought the personal side out of Nigel. I think there are many men, in many sports, that you’ll interview better than anyone else has done. Keep on going 👍
I'm 42 years old, it was seeing Nigel Mansel as a kid and teenager that started my lifelong long of F1. Great to hear some of the stories. What an absolute legend. Thank you Nigel.
I got to see Nigel race twice the first time was in Phoenix USGP in 91 and again in 93 here in Vancouver in the Cart Indy race. I borrowed Union Jack from the Hyatt Hotel and put Go Red 5 on it and we waved it everytime he went by and he even acknowledged us on the parade lap before the race. They never got their flag back! At one time my brother and Nigel looked a lot alike. With all those accidents he lucky to be alive truly he is Il Leone. Great Interview and thanks for sharing it, 😎👍🇨🇦
To this day I still remember that left rear tyre exploding at 180mph at the 86 Australian gp and Nigel somehow keeping the Williams under control.Nigel is an absolute legend with the heart of a lion.
One of the best interviews ever, with one of best and greatest drivers, he has always been my hero and always will be, loved watching him when I was growing up, brilliant 👏
You could feel and see the Love you have for our Nigel Mansell. Such a down to earth Champion. How lucky for us to see this brilliant interview. I would love to meet our Nigel I'm just slightly younger than him but I've watched every race he's ever been in and I just wish we could turn back time and do it all again in this new era of cars. And show these young Guns how it's done. Thank you for this wonderful insight Jodie xx

So glad you enjoyed it xx
I agree, they were the glory days of F1. We were fortunate enough to have enjoyed the V10 & V12 days. 👌
Ahh such lovely words. Thank you!! Xxx
So good to hear these memories straight from the man himself. Amazing interview, time just flew by while watching. Thank you.
Thank you David! Glad you enjoyed xx
The era when they made proper racing drivers. True legend
Absolutely xx
Yeah but you also missed his story about witnessing about 5 fatal crashes
Yip and played for keeps
I remember seeing Nigel in Formula Ford in 1977 in a Javelin JL5 and Crossle 32F. Even then he was fabulous to watch. True legend. Many thanks for another magnificent production Jodie x
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it xx
The 360 at Imola was one of the most incredible racing moments I’ve seen in racing, and I’ve been watching from 1982! Much respect for Nigel Mansell’s skills. No one could over drive a car better than him.
Absolutely xx
360, fastests lap the next lap and then the car broke
This is an incredible inteview!!!
This has to be one of the best interviews I've ever seen.
You have just the right amount of input and allowed Nigel to speak.
Incredible watching.
Love it 👌😊
Thanks so much Matt! Nigel is an incredible human being xx
@@KiddinaSweetShop have to say my admiration for him has gone up a few gears!
Nigel 'il Leone' Mansell was absolutely one of the best back in the day, up there with Prost & Senna. A great interview, which allowed Nigel to recollect his amazing career, without the interviewer interrupting all the time - well done to Jodie Kidd for facilitating properly 🙂
This interview was fantastic, Nigel is hands down my favorite driver. Such a relatable dude. Shout out Sir Nigel lion Mansell
Thank you, I have laughed so hard on several occasions, Nigel is really special. I use to work in Monaco in the late eighties and you brought me back to à such amazing era and time of my life by just interviewing one of the greatest.
Thanks again.
He's a legend xz
Oh my god, what a career that man had a true legend, greatest interview ever 'so far' what a place for a interview. Nigel & Damon Hill my all time favourite drivers, ps you done some background of information on that interview, great job jodie keep it up ❤️
Thanks Richard! A special day xx
Fantastic interview. I’m 66 and watch Nigel race many times. A true ‘racer’, not just a fast driver - like many today.
So true xx
This is one of the best interviews I’ve seen of an F1 driver. They all have their public persona, but this one. It’s quite emotional really. It felt like a “final good bye, here’s my honest recollection of events, which may not be accurate, but it’s my recollection”
I really enjoyed this interview with Mansell, a true legend and the best interview I have seen about him !
Nigel is a top bloke. Great interview and stories
One racing driver of all time I've wanted to meet what a true British legend
Aaaa thank you 🥰🥰
What an amazing interview , Nigel is like bionic man.
Isn't this just the best F1 Interview ever. So relaxed and joyous. Legendary story telling and well interviewed.
amazing interview I meet Nigel (Got his autograph I had been chasing him around the world for 2 years just to get his mark)at the Australian open golf in 1988, and he was a truely amazing man, so friendly to the spectators
So thanks for this
Great interview on both parts. I wish I would have been watching F1 in Nigel's active years. You are truly crazy in the best knind of way.
Wow, thank you!
Fantastic interview!! Absolute legend. Thanks for the memories and the big,big smiles👏
Thanks for sharing it all in this interview Mr. Mansell.
Mansell was the real deal....need more guys like him on the track.....
Beyond excellent, this interview is the best. As an avid, long term F1 fan, the interaction between Nigel and Jodie really spoke to me. Loved it!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Jodie, this is by far the best interview I've watched in a long time. The "interviewer" must relate to the "interviewee" and you have that down!!
Oh by the way, you have another subscriber as well. I couldn't leave the page without signing on! Thanks for all the work it takes for you and your crew to get it right.
what an amazing interview, loved it.
“There’s a limit to their generosity …” what a great story and fantastic interview with this legend Jodie. Congratulations
Brilliant storey hey xx
I agree but can’t believe neither of them could remember Rubéns Barrichellos name
He's a legend xx
Are you from Sao Paolo?
Florianopolis @@stuartbritton4811
Absolutely stunning interview. Learned so many new things about Nigel. Luv the respect you showed him. Thanks Jodie. (The other driver you and Nigel where trying to remember of that awful weekend in Imola 1994 is Rubens Barrichello he drove for the Jordan team at that time)
Am thinking was it Andrea de ceasires
@@hughmccarry4950 Thanks for the reply Hugh. De Cesaris also drove for Jordan in that race (stood in for Eddie Irvine while he was suspended), but it was Barrichello who had the other big crash just before the pits entrance in qualifying.
Love Nige, such a gladiator on the track, totally fearless. Should have three F1 championships. Fantastic interview Jodi, thank you.
The best 👏🏼 thank you xx
What an amazing interview Jodie . Nigel was so humble .Never knew how bad his injuries were . Definitely one of your best thnks
Wow great job Jodie this is the best interview with Nigel I’ve ever seen keep up the good work love the channel ❤️
I also loved the 1985 period at Williams with Keke and Nigel the FW10 is still my fav F1 car did both uk gp’s that year plus spa
Brilliant interview Jodie; you’ve certainly brought the personal side out of Nigel. I think there are many men, in many sports, that you’ll interview better than anyone else has done. Keep on going 👍
Thank you so much for a lovely comment xx
Living legend!! And a great raconteur, who would have known?
Great and deservedly passionate interview by Jodie…thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching xx
I'm 42 years old, it was seeing Nigel Mansel as a kid and teenager that started my lifelong long of F1. Great to hear some of the stories. What an absolute legend. Thank you Nigel.
Wow was reallly a fan from this BRILLIANT MAN. ALL RESPECT TO HIM. BRILLL INTERVIEW JODIE)))
Great Interview and thanks for sharing it, 😎👍🇨🇦
Some great stories from you, thanks for watching xx
To this day I still remember that left rear tyre exploding at 180mph at the 86 Australian gp and Nigel somehow keeping the Williams under control.Nigel is an absolute legend with the heart of a lion.
Mind blowing xx
One of the best interviews ever, with one of best and greatest drivers, he has always been my hero and always will be, loved watching him when I was growing up, brilliant 👏
Mine too! Thanks Gareth xx
Very moving, actually. What an incredible guy. I lived through this at the time, as an F1 fan, we were all rooting for Nigel.
