Burgers zoo is by far my favorite. I hold animal husbandry in very high regard and in my opinion, burgers is unbeaten in that aspect in the Netherlands. Also love the immersive eco-displays. Wildlands is also worth a visit IMO.
I have 5 favorite zoos in the Netherlands. Burgers Zoo, Dierenpark Amersfoort, Ouwehands Dierenpark, Wildlands and Beekse Bergen! I love every zoo but these are my favorite
I love visiting Diergaarde Blijdorp. I visit the park at least once a year and I can never get tired of it. I hope you will make a video about this zoo someday as well.
Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam is my home zoo, but I like Burger's in Arnhem and Ouwehands in Rhenen more. I visited 3 new zoos (for me) last year: Beekse Bergen, Dierenpark Amersfoort and de Apenheul and I found them all 3 quite enjoyable. I will certainly revisit some of them.
I'm from Rhenen and I find it amazing that you like Ouwehands so much, it is the park wich sparked my love for zoos. fun fact, Marcel Boekhoorn has his office above the gorilla enclosure with a view of the animals.
Thank you for the video. So far in the Netherlands I have visited the GaiaZoo, the Rotterdam Zoo and the Ouwehands Dierenpark. I liked them all, but I still liked the GaiaZoo the most.
dude I was waiting for this one. I love this park partially because i worked there in the birds department. its my personal favorite next to Burgers in Arnhem and blijdorp in Rotterdam.
You should take another look at the Zie-Zoo. When i visited it, last summer, with tall grass growing everywhere, it was a pretty good visit. Also Apenheul in Appeldoorn is a recommended visit, so it is mostly monkeys and apes, with less than 10 other species, i had no complaints about any of the enclosures, and would like to see your opinion about that.
I absolutely adore some of these designs of the exhibits! The Koala house, the gorillas, the tigers, they're so wonderful! Unique experiences that get special views of the animals, and the variety of species is wonderful! I don't think there's many zoos in the world that have all the hornbills like that next to each other. Top notch zoo!
Artis, Blijdorp, Burgers zoo, wildlands, Apenheul, Amersfoort, Ouwehands are probably some of the best we got. Beekse bergens is pretty decent but not S tier
My favorite is a slightly obscure one compared to the big names mentioned below, namely ZooParc Overloon. It's owned by the same people that own Beekse Bergen and you can tell with the way things are built up. Most importantly, to me anyways, almost all enclosures are big and still provide a good view for guests. There are a few exceptions, but these enclosures are slated to be replaced. As for Ouwehands, yes you can see a clear distinction between the old habitats, which are very poor, and the new habitats, which are amazing. I'm glad you mentioned the bears and why they have weird behaviour sometimes. It is good for people to know that these bears were mistreated and have been given a beautiful home to live out the rest of their lives in. I love spending time there near the pool area during warmer days and just watch the bears play in the pool. Knowing where they came from and how they are living now is amazing.
Long shot, but ever visited any of the UK zoos? Not sure how easy that would be for you but we've got some great zoos over here! Definitely some that need improvements but plenty that are a real treat. At least to me.
Dear Martin, another great video and exciting information about the zoo. When will we be taken further into the world of zoos in the Czech Republic, maybe already in the next video? Best regards.
I would love to visit this zoo someday. The outdoor orangutan exhibit reminds me of the Smithsonian National Zoo exhibits. Plus, I love how the zoo mixes wolves with European brown bears and gorillas with meerkats, along with having koalas and giant pandas! You're a great person.
My favorite zoo in the Netherlands are 3. Ouwehands zoo, AquaZoo Leeuwarden and Wildlands. I can't choose between those 3 and have a subscription to all 3
My favorite Dutch zoo is Burgers Zoo. I love the focus on immersive eco-displays like the Bush, Desert, Mangrove and Rimba. It's unlike any other Dutch zoo in that regard. Other favorites would be Gaia Zoo (beautiful landscaping and outdoor exhibits) and Artis (Oldest zoo in NL with some beautiful historical buildings that have been adapted to modern animal husbandry standards in an interesting way). Honorable mention to Zie-Zoo, a much smaller Dutch zoo with some nice exhibits and lots of rarer species.
You should visit Safaripark Beekse Bergen! It's the only zoo in the Netherlands with a car safari, in addition to a boat and bus tour. There are absolutely massive valleys shared by several species and it's a sight to behold.
Great video, I think you showed almost all of the animals there. I’m jealous you got to see the orangutans climbing on those poles, in all of my visits over the years (probably at least 15 times or more) I’ve never actually seen them make use of that. I’d say my favorite Dutch zoo is probably Burgers but Ouwehands is a close second. They both have their own unique aspects which is nice but I would also like to see that they redevelop some of their older enclosures, they both have some older parts that also deserve some more attention.
You should definitely go to Apenheul. Its really nice. For Ouwehands O think it's quite a nice zoo and it has an interesting history. At the beginning of the second world war the Dutch tried to mount their defense around here. So a lot of soldiers camped in the zoo during this time. Next to that all big predators were killed by the Dutch army as they were afraid the animals would attack them in the back would they be able to escape. The story goes the owners did hide one baby lion that did survive. And off course big love the Berenbos (Bear Forest).
I live a few kilometers from Rhenen, and went to Ouwehand a lot as a child. But I haven't been in years, and I see that there are new enclosures I haven't seen yet. So I should probably plan a new visit.
Ouwehands was the zoo of my childhood - the bear sanctuary remains its best feature I feel, if only given what it meant for its rescued residents. Quite a few parts of this zoo are unfortunately in dire need of an upgrade, and it shows. The seal enclosure did at one point contain many species of wading birds and ducks, together forming the "Wadden sea" habitat. IIRC this enclosure was constructed from what used to be the dolphin pool. Fortunately those have been gone for quite some time. I'd name Burgers Zoo in Arnhem as my favourite in the country. The eco displays and the variety there are wonderful for both animals and visitors, and it also makes for a great "bad weather day" option, given that so much of it is indoors.
Some of my absolute favourites in the Netherlands are: Zooparc Overloon, GaiaZoo, Diergaarde Blijdorp, Dierenpark Zie-Zoo en Eindhoven Zoo (formerly known as Dierenrijk Mierlo).
Ouwehands is my favourite. Used to go there with my dogs, a seasonpass for the year gives you free tickets for your dogs, so by going only twice you'd be cheaper off. The zoo also has a deep history bc it is located at the line of defense for the dutch military during the WWII, so soldier would write home about how they could hear the lions, seeing as they weren't allowed to say where they were located. Sadly during the German assault all predators and bigger animals had to be shot, one of the few surviving animals was a polarbear cub, it gets even sadder though, when the Germans retreated all predators had to once again be shot, which this time included the now grown up polarbear. There are interesting stories about keepers doing their best trying to evacuate animals to farms and other places in the country.
Yes, I read up on that a bit while making the video. Unfortunately, it's not a unique story. I posted a video about Dresden Zoo on my German channel a couple weeks ago and boy oh boy, the stories about what happened to the animals when the city was bombed were horrific :(
Looks like you missed the bats in the big indoor playground hall, they're in a cave next to the water play area, and I think they even have an outdoor enclosure as well... Overall I like Ouwehands zoo, mostly for its species, and a handful of exhibits. But, overall I think it's a bit of a mess. There's very little cohesion which is very noticeable. To me at least. I hated koalia, there's such good theming, but it's all ruined by the bland gray boxes they've plastered all around. It was super jarring. Can't wait to visit again soon though, once the baby giant panda goes outside ;) My favorite zoo I would highly recommend is Beekse Bergen, would love to hear your thoughts! You'll love the elephant exhibits I'm sure!
I think he already visited if I recall it right. He has so much in storage ~40 Zoos/parcs which he has visited last year. So might take some more time until this overview will come.
Yes, I did miss them, no clue they were even there. :D I absolutely understand what you mean, the zoo is really not very stringently designed and there is no clear concept. But that didn't really bother me, especially when the “chaos” (perhaps a little exaggerated) gives rise to such unique enclosures. But yes, this is definitely the area where Ouwehand's Dierenpark leaves the most to be desired. And yes, I was actually in Beekse Bergen in 2022. One break-up and a broken laptop later, I'll have to go again before I can make a video. Let's see when that works out. Since I don't even have a driver's license myself, I probably won't be able to firmly plan it into my trip to the Netherlands. Let's see. :)
Hello, have you ever been to Wildlands Emmen in the Netherlands? I think it's a great zoo because the enclosure are big and the themes are really good visible for the guests so it feels like you are there where the animals live in the wild hope you make a video of it. Keep ongoing!!!
I have been to Wildlands in 2021 and made a video in German back then. I even did one about the old zoo to keep the memory alive. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, not much has changed in the Wildlands since then, so I could theoretically translate both videos 1:1. But I'd actually prefer to go back first.
Artis of course. It’s the classic city zoo in the middle of Amsterdam and it has some of the most beautiful modern enclosures for the elephants and lions
Very close to the German-Dutch border is the city of Emmen, which abandoned the old city zoo grounds years ago and built a new park called "Wildlands". The park somewhat blends its character between a zoo and a themepark. Its enclosures are mostly pretty modern, literally and in terms of standards, with an emphasis on the well-being of the animals. Many people criticize the zoo for having enclosures so big they hardly see certain animals (mainly the lions). I grew up pretty close to Emmen so I have been visiting the old zoo since I was a kid and have been to the new one twice, although the last time was years ago. It would be fun to hear your thoughts one what Wildlands has built. The main downside I personally remember is how the polar bear enclosure could be a lot better. (they really seem to be getting the short end of the stick often)
Yes, like others say, visit Burgers Zoo, the bush, the jungle and the rest. And for heritage sake Artis, did it stand the test of time? Is there the new microbia, yes, see microbes at work an addition??
15:24 you catched a cute little frog jumping to the grass. So Marcel Boekhoorn turned things around. Under his leadership, larger enclosures were built. The small enclosures are a remnant of the old management. I think that larger enclosures will be built much more often in the future, but something like that can not be achieved in just a few years. The pitfeeling you tell about with the panda's and the bonobo's is to give them some more privacy if they want without them having to go into the nightenclosure. People like to bang on the windows and ofcourse are herdanimals, so where the zooanimals are, there are people.
You have missed the bats in the large indoor hall... You can only see those if you goes in the dark labyrint. Burgers Zoo is for me the best zoo of the Netherlands. Ouwehands i have been a couple of months ago. The most special was a tiger who was swimming. I never saw that.
ALL ZOOS NEED MONEY AND OF COURSE=NOT ENOUGH FOR ALL THEY NEED!!!!!!!!! THANKS FOR THIS TOUR==I AM HOME BOUND AND THIS IS MY TRAVEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There are two possible reasons why most zoos don't let the orang-utans (or any other animals for that matter) out to walk on ropes above the people. 1) they might decide to get down and harass the people or try to escape, causing chaos and a security issue. 2) people might harass the animals, try to get them dangerously close with junkfood (or just regular human food not safe for them) and that can cause potential issues as well. It's a lot easier, if the animals are staying in a certain area for sure and no idiots have the chance to feed to them something lethal by accident or ignorance. It's nice though when animals can get out for a while WITH their caretakers, supervised and controlled, I've seen good examples of that, although it is only working within certain limitations of the species. In my hometown zoo (Győr, Hungary) they let out the penguins for the commentated feeding for a walk twice a day. They put up boundaries for people on either side, so nobody is getting too close, they say that you are not allowed to touch etc, but the penguins are free to walk around in that area while one caretaker is feeding them and the other tells interesting facts about them. The penguins know the times, line up at the door to come out, and go back on their own, when they had enough, only a few need to be "escorted" back at the end, and no penguin tries to go beyond the boundary set up (it's really just a plastic chain on two poles, so no big production, they fit easily under if they want), although some are more curious and come pretty close to the humans.
I understand what you mean, but the orangutans hang from ropes that hang a few meters above the visitors. Here, neither the visitors can get to the animals, nor the animals to the visitors. There is the same, or even more, distance as in other enclosures - just vertically instead of horizontally. The only concern you might have is that one of the animals might fall down, which is probably less likely than an orang drowning in a moat (as is far too often the case with great apes), which are pretty standard for them anyway. So no matter how long I think about it and how many possible reasons come to mind, it doesn't really add up. In my opinion, this should be done more often - not only over visitor paths, but potentially also over other enclosures.
Ouwehands Dierenpark also allows dogs in the park. I took my dog once but I won’t anymore cause I felt bad for both my dog and the other animals. My dog was really scared (especially near the wolves) and when we saw the Orangutans there was a younger Orangutan and he was scared of my dog, kept hiding behind his mother and the mother kept hitting the glass, trying to “defend” her child from my dog (even though my dog was trying to hide as well). The other animals didn’t really care but I felt bad for stressing the Orangutans and my dog out. I tried it cause it sounded fun but I regretted it so I wouldn’t recommend it (unless you need a guide/therapy dog of course).
Mijn top 3: 1 WILDLANDS Adventure Zoo (Emmen) 2 Burgers Zoo (Arnhem) 3 Safaripark Beekse Bergen (Hilvarenbeek). book 1 night at Safari Hotel Beekse Bergen and you will have the best experience!!!
Kind of a missed opportunity to call it pandaria, but guess that would have been a copyright strike... Can't honestly say anything about present day zoo's since my last visits have been over half a lifetime ago and I'm nearing 50 by now...Always loved Burger's zoo though thanks to childhood memories
(This comment is made before seeing the whole video) Last year i visited ouwe hands dierenpark with one of my friends and i remember being really dissapointed by the progress of the park. As a big zoo fan I ahve visited it a desent amount in the past where i really enjoyed it. But with my last visit it felt like the zoo was too focussed on the panda enclosers (which are of course really expensive animals to keep) but didnt have much focus on the other parts of the park. It felt outdated which made me sad as a huge fan of all the interesting and unique animals they keep. Burgers Zoo is my favourite zoo in the Netherlands with its incredible indoor areas and continued updated zoo.
This shows again that it really makes a big difference whether you visit a zoo for the first time or repeatedly. Just getting a feel for how a zoo is (currently) developing makes a big difference. I always notice this when people rave about the ZOOM Erlebniswelt in Gelsenkirchen, because I've simply had my fill of it by now. Fortunately, more will be happening there soon, but there hasn't been any development for a long time. (Which is of course also due to the fact that the whole zoo has been redone :D)
@experiencethezoo I am a intern there on the bird department but I also take care of animals like the elephants and tapirs If ya ever need a guide tell me would love to tell ya some fun facts and show ya around :)
Like to see birds and only birds? Vogelpark Avifauna at Alphen aan de Rijn is the spot for you. I like Dierenpark Amersfoort (because it is my hometown) and Burgers Zoo too. I visit Ouwehands in december as part of another event there, and that is NOT the good time to go there. 80% of the animals were inside or outside sleeping. Most of them are from warmer places on the earth so I can not blame them. I saw 1 tiger doing the same route as he/she has been done for 10000000-times before. I therefore did not like that part. And as a grown up a tip, like you said: stay away from the inside for the apes shown at 20:50 Try not to visit when the school holidays are ongoing! Ouwehands is aiming on childeren a lot so it can be noisy, not only there!!
My favorite zoo in the Netherlands is Wildlands Emmen. The Problem is: it’s the only Dutch zoo I know P.S: It’s very confusing to hear you speaking English if you normally hear you speak German.
Burgers zoo is by far my favorite but Rhenen and Apenheul are classics that are always amazing to visit

Yeah, I definitely need to go back to Zii Zoo sometime. I mean, when I was there, they were just about to get their snow leopards.
Burgers and also Ouwehands 😍, even more when I think about all the memories from these 2 parks. Great video like always!
Ouwenhands is my favorite zoo, ive been there throughout my life and it still surprises me with new additions to the park and its animal collection.

Yeah, but at least right now we can be excited for what happens next. Can't wait to find out more about their new project.

Burgers zoo definitely!!!
You have missed the bats in the large indoor hall... You can only see those if you goes in the dark labyrint.
Burgers Zoo is for me the best zoo of the Netherlands.
Ouwehands i have been a couple of months ago. The most special was a tiger who was swimming. I never saw that.
I really recommend Rotterdam zoo Blijdorp !
Beekse bergen Hilvarenbeek/Tilburg
Burgers zoo in Arnhem and beekse bergen in hilvarenbeek/ tilburg
Can you do Beekse Bergen too?
Burger zoo is my favourite zoo

I am a big fan of Diergaarde Blijdorp in Rotterdam. I also like Gaia Zoo and Wildlands.

Zo leuk 😃 but really koi in the intrance?
Much horn bills tho…..
I really love Wildlands in Emmen
Kind of a missed opportunity to call it pandaria, but guess that would have been a copyright strike...
Can't honestly say anything about present day zoo's since my last visits have been over half a lifetime ago and I'm nearing 50 by now...Always loved Burger's zoo though thanks to childhood memories
Please go to Burgers zoo and Beekse Bergen
The young African elephant is 2 and a half month ago past away😢
ARTIS next?
Not yet, but I will probably visit Artis this year.
@experiencethezoo I am a intern there on the bird department but I also take care of animals like the elephants and tapirs If ya ever need a guide tell me would love to tell ya some fun facts and show ya around :)
TRY OUT WILDLANDS IN EMMEN ITS AMAZING

Burgers as well
Burgers Zoo is best zoo in the Netherlands
Wildlands is also a great zoo in the Netherlands
The beekse bergen ❤ is my home park
i may work at dierenpark amersfoort but artis, blijdorp, wildlands and rhene share the top spot for me
My favorite zoo in netherland is burger's zoo
My home zoo (Smithsonian) has an Orangutan climbing line over the pedestrian path, like this one.
I live in the Netherlands, I think burger’s zoo
My favorite zoo in the Netherlands is Wildlands Emmen. The Problem is: it’s the only Dutch zoo I know
P.S: It’s very confusing to hear you speaking English if you normally hear you speak German.
But Wildlands is my fourth favourite zoo I’ve ever seen, but I think this will change in the spring, cause I’ll go in the zoo of Leipzig.
I love ouwehands and Burgers Zoo,but the best city zoo is Diergaarde Blijdorp!
GAIAZOO ❤
The only Dutch zoo I've been to is Artis, although it's actually my least favorite of the European zoos I've visited.
Diergaarde blijdorp rotterdam
