You don’t just get married out of nowhere, Vic was her real boyfriend at the time. Jimmy and Pier barely knew each other. I believe Bill Bast who actually LIVED with Jimmy on and off for FIVE YEARS! Jimmy was not heterosexual. This relationship with Pier is fantasy created by the studio in order to sell Jimmy. It happened all the time in those days
