    For me the most disappointing thing was them removing hand to hand combat from the game They literally removed shield skill tree from God of War 2018

      well they didn't remove hand to hand combat but it sucks that they removed the barehanded skill tree but they do implement a lot more of the games combat than 2018

      It's all unlocked now, but yeah it sucks because that skill three had bonuses for the moves and now is gone

      I mean, in the previous game, there was only one shield so adding a tree for it was fine but now the game has too much shields. Idk bout' you but I won't add tree for each and every shield. But to compensate, they added the spear :D

Are we really buying the idea that the weapons feel weaker because of freaking snow? The developers can then choose what makes sense and what doesn't and use that to cover up their laziness.

      @@ArmoredG I can understand why they did this though, imagine if you could spam Tartarus rage, also in GOWR some Runic attacks were revamped into normal attacks which I see as a good change, (Ex: Hyperion grapple and River of knives)

      ​@Jamari Spinner but some normal attacks were turned into runic attacks while some attacks were just straight up removed. Not to mention not having the executioner cleave anymore or relearning basic and runic attacks. That's just ridiculous.

      Yes much no fluid and intense than the new one. The newer one has more flash points and movements are too quick. 2018 has it a bit better

    The backwards dodge attack for the Blades was made into Blast of Hephaestus, and it's way cooler than a fireball. Helios Flare shoots a fireball

    My only complaint about gowr is the lack of "heaviness" the weapons don't feel heavy. They are light and quick but in gow2018 it's heavy and swift. Also they could have intensify the boss fights, especially Thor and Odin. Baldur still the best boss fight in gow.

      @@godzillazfriction does not feel like Baldur's. We fought him three times, 1st time we literally separated the land we were standing on. Thor just sent him flying across Midgard and created frozen lighting (pretty underwhelming). If they intensify it where it would literally shake the nine realms, the lands would be separated , the seas and lake would be violently shaking and everyone will feel the tremors cause by Thor and Kratos ; that would have made it really cool imo.

    I can see why some of the tweaks were made in Ragnarok, some like it some don't but serves a purpose. 2018 has more impact and felt heavier while Rag was faster and slightly floaty. But I noticed in Rag there are less delays in between attack inputs thus making it easier to transition from different combos to the next, hence why the sequel feels much faster in my opinion.

    I honestly miss a lot the 2018 moveset, even with the axe, I miss the holding R2 move instead of the horizontal hack it does, and with the blades I just feel they leaned into the lesser fun aspects of 2018's moveset. I really miss the holding R1 move that lets you attack a lot of nearby enemies

      I miss that too, you know whats weird? That you can see kratos using it in the first gowr trailer and in the end of it, you can also see him using the new one. Feels weird that they decided to remove it

    The thing that disappointed me the most was how they nerfed the hell out of the meteoric strike animation of the blades of chaos. The animation for it in the last game was epic as hell.

    I never liked the changes to the heaviness of both the Leviathan Axe and the Blades of Chaos. In the 2018 game they were heavy but quick, in Ragnarök they feel too "floaty". Especially noticable when you compare the stance switch sound effects from the 2018 game for the Leviathan Axe.

    The combat in GOW 2018 was tremendously satisfying. Each hit built up elemental damage making the Axe/Blades glow brighter and you could really feel the damage those bad boys were doing. The weapons grew stronger visually with each consecutive strike, the swings were heavy and destructive. In Ragnarok it feels like something is missing, Kratos is lost in a sea of enemies and his strikes are not as distinctive when compared to 2018. They also removed the melee skill tree, featuring the fists and the shield ,which included some awesome moves. As an OG Fan I must say the whole game let me down a little bit. It is still an amazing, gorgeous world that no doubt took much effort to craft, I guess I just expected a little more.

      there's a LOT of things going for ragnaroks combat but at first viewing yes it definitely sucks that they removed the barehand skill tree as well as some of the stances but with how much it is fully in ragnarok, it definitely is an upgrade and not a downgrade

      the main difference is that they toned down the particle effects, so it just feels less impactful because you're used to how it looked before

      For me personally it's the other way around. When i'm in the training arena in nifelheim and i have many enemys around me and i try the blades i legit feel every hit perfectly (especially with the cyclone of chaos). Of course that was also present in 2018 but not that much for me

      @@dignelberrt yeah, so that's what's different when I do the hit and stop and hit again combo using the axe. It doesn't feel as good as the particle effects are toned down which I'm definitely not happy about. It's so satisfying to do that during GOW 2018.

    Elemental Slash in GoW 2018 was the most useless move of the entire game.

    They changed three major things:
    1. The camera
    The camera pans away from kratos a remarkable amount. You no longer have to tilt the camera up to spot flying or large creatures because the are always in frame. Unfortunately that makes it less cinematic and immersive
    2. The sound design
    Weapons no longer feel like they hit as hard because you can barely hear them. In 2018 the loudest sound in combat were those of your weapons. Your hits felt powerful, but not so much in ragnarok
    3. The particle effects
    Ragnarok was step down in terms of effects. The effects of the axe and blades are now almost non-existent. Previously the weapons would project huge effect to convey the power of their hits. In ragnarok the effects doesn't even come close.

      I disagree I think the axe affects are a lot better in Ragnarok. The blades design are not cool tho. The gold doesn't look fire and when the elemental is charged up it doesn't look anywhere near as cool as 2018. But the fire effects of the runics and the elemental triangle attacks look great

    Man the 2018 blades were awesome. It's like you could feel the heat from the blade's fire. Every hit that landed felt satisfying. I feel like they kinda skimped on the graphics of the blades and sound fx of the blades this time around. Why change it? Dont fix something that ain't broken.

    Honestly, I still feel Powerful af at Endgame in GOWR on the hardest difficulties. But man I miss that feeling of feeling comfortable fighting with my fist. That Zeus Armor Set mixed with a Fist Build was INSANE

    It seems that the reason why the weapons sound less loud in Ragnarök is because of the snow and cold air making the sound effects more denser. Neat little detail

      It hurt your eyes and kinda blind you a bit in chaotic fight tho, don’t know if they tone down effect for PS4 performance only or because they don’t want to hurt player’s eyes too much as well. BTW I agree that GOW has cooler effect for Blade of Chaos.

    If there's one detail in this new god of War games is how Kratos despise the blade of Chaos.
    he can't throw them away, they're fucking bound to his body, so the only thing he can is hide them or store them where he think home is, if he tries to do anything else, they will just appear.
    The chain marks will never disappear but I love how they show that he can at least remove them and store the blades. It's cool that they also show that the chains seems to appear from nowhere when he grabs them in the second game, meaning the blades spawn the chains.
    But the biggest most interesting detail, is how well maintained the Leviathan Axe is, while the blades are Rusty and dirty. In both games, the AXE looks pristine, and only gets better, while you need to work your ass off to maintain the blades to a point where they look THIS GOOD like it's shown in the video.
    That's good storytelling. The blades are a reminder of his past, his sins, and his mistakes.

    I did feel disappointed that they took away the melee move tree. I was thinking we would get melee and shield runic attacks in this game but sadly we did not. You really see it when you play these games back to back and I just so happen to start playing 2018 GOW again because Ragnarok didnt come with NG+

    Curse the guy who decided to create enemies like nightmare and then decided to give them an upgrade by calling them wisps.
    They are completely stupid enemies and i don't get it why are they everywhere

    Honestly the argument goes two ways. In gow 2018 the blades in my opinion were the better weapon. Better crowd control in some aspects of the game, definitely did more damage than the axe and overall led to a better synergy of combat skills and runic attacks (Meteoric Slam > Breath of Thamur).
    So in Ragnarok it's kinda a bummer that a lot of what made the blades great in 2018 didn't carry over or were greatly nerfed. But I can see why they did it. The pause stance attacks for the blades were absolutely broken and most times I didn't bother with the axe once I had the blades fully upgraded.
    In Ragnarok the devs made sure that all the weapons synergized properly which led to more diverse and generally fast paced gameplay which I enjoyed greatly. Plus having the grapple moves with the blades expanded upon (grapple enemies to you, grapple towards enemies) really evened things out in the end

      Well thats what bothered me the pause stance attacks were removed which I get why they removed it but I was hoping that the pause stance attacks would be for all weapons not just the axe

    the "less effects" thing is because many people complained about how there's too much things going on when fighting enemies using both Atreus and Kratos. It's only now that we realize there isn't as much effects, but specially with attacks like the runic crows or wolves, the screen would flood with too many blinding effects and it would feel all over the place. Watching it may be cool but it can get a little tiring when playing. The sound design however, didn't need to decrease, and it did, so that I don't know why would they make it less epic

      i’m not sure why they changed the sounds for they blades, the 2018 sounds were way better, but i do agree that the less cluttered visuals were a general improvement. this is really apparent with the nemean crush and cross slash finisher, in ragnarok you can actually see what’s behind them and the blades actually look like they’re on fire instead of just leaving behind orange trails

      @@eddiechestnuts1588 well ragnarok also technically has skins for the weapons because you can select from different stages of upgrading for how you want them to look.
      You can keep the OG blades look even if you upgrade it to max in ragnarok. Something you cannot do in 2018.

    I mainly miss how the leviathan Ax' R1 hold was changed so now it looks cooler, but is a lot slower and a lot less practical especially in building permafrost.
    I do really enjoy how they just put some of the runic attacks in your base kit, especially the one with the ax' slash waves cuz it looks pretty sick.

    I guess Fimbulwinter really reduced the coolness factor of frost and immolation. Could be in-game logic rather than the animators using less effects.

    The Blades of Chaos' chains seems more like one of those employee id card reel than an actual chain when it comes to its apparent physics. It seems to constantly put a retracting force to keep the blades on Kratos' hands, and Kratos actually had to apply substantial force for the blade to actually swing and launch a good distance, that's why at the conclusion of many moves, the chains seem to so quickly retract into default despite Kratos making no visible effort to put them back in place; I imagine a chain-tethered blades with more grounded physics would be a mess to put back together even of you have the strength and dexterity to wield them to great efficiency

    I prefer how the blades in 2018 look too, gold accents instead of excess amounts, a cool tail instead of lower jaw, more pronounced points on the blades and cool runes on the blade edge

    As a owner of GOW 2018 I can't believe how the blade of chaos is still much stronger and has better immersive effects rather than the one on ragnarok. I think they nerfed the weapons in ragnarok and it feels dull. It lacks the immersive effects and the heaviness as well. I plan on buying ragnarok anyways. If GOW 6 ever happens I want the devs to include all the impressiveness just as gow 2018 into gow 6 and inlcude the realism in gow ragnarok for gow 6. GOW 2018 and ragnarok are both masterpieces in their own unique way. Wish me luck on playing gow ragnarok!
    Edit: So I bought GOW Ragnarok Deluxe Edition (to be specific) and I'm on give me god of war mode, I gotta say the game is so good not just any so good, it's really a masterpiece. Btw I play on a PS4. I was a bit wrong on the blades of chaos part sorry there hahaha. The blades of chaos in the new game is great it has different effects.

    To be honest, I would have chosen to put Icarus storm or cyclone of chaos as a move using R1 and add in the stance switch in God of War Ragnarök and add in the regular animations for the stance switch. One thing I do not like is there are way less runic attacks than last game, they should've had more runic attacks.

    I think the biggest change for me was the camera. In 2018 it is farther back and you can see more around you during combat, in 2022 it is closer and makes you tunnel vision.

      The camera is insane when you fight the berserkers. The ice wall makes it worse.

    Spartan Charge is technically there, it’s basically just a shielded type exclusive move now. Not under runic attacks but rather under the shield type section

    I mean, the button and runic changes allows for more diverse attacks without having to worry about cooldowns or trying to find the chests to get the runic attacks. Though it is more confusing in Ragnarök, it has it upsides making some of the old runic attacks into basic attacks and having the ability to use them without replacing them as runes. The thing I miss is the ability to put runes into armor and the ability for almost guaranteed randomness on what you receive. Instead, we have a limit of 9 and to activate most of them, you need 3 of the same kind. Not to mention, the bonuses from God of War 4's runes were helpful and you just buy new ones for new abilities and stats.

    I feel like the blade immulation on the 2nd game is better because the blade effect gives it the old God of War look but I did notice the second game is missing a lot of effects and I wish they had punching combos like the first one🥺

    I played over 500 hours of gow 2018 and I miss 2018's blades. They looked better and played better. Now they look flat, and feel flat. The axe if great imo but the blades 😭😭

    personally gow18 combat system regardless of whether it's ax blades or bare hands it's more compact and balanced, if compared to gowR it's not balanced and Kratos's timing response every time he attacks there will be a lagging problem

    What really bothers me about Ragnarok is Blades of Chaos design
    I don't have a problem with the gold-plated side design on a weapon, but why did they remove the Nine runes of the that used to give a strong look to the weapon in gow 2018 and make Blade very norse
    But what bothers me the most, and I could talk about it all day, is why in the final upgrade of the blades in ragnarok, the weapon still has some echoes, scratches, and traces, and it looks like it's broken in some parts of the weapon.
    I mean, you are literally upgrading a weapon to a ninth level. This means that it has reached its maximum strength. Isn't it strange that it contains some special fractions and that it becomes more aesthetically pleasing than the 2018 version, in terms of less golden parts?

    I pretty much prefer thw aesthetics of the weapons when it comes 2018, it has the cool effects, the oomph and heaviness, slow mo and the higher camera angle, but i like the graphics of gowr when it comes to the environment anr texturing, hopefully the next game will be like that

    I noticed in gow Ragnarok before or during a runic attack, the whole screen lights up. Gow 2018 doesn’t do this and I think it looks so much cleaner

    The Rampage of furies without slam is a big L. I just completely stopped in my tracks when i first saw it.
    His light attack and rush felt better in ragnarok, but his Heavy attack and slam now just felt so weightless, which made it feels like eating coffee powder instead of drinking it with water.

    I do like the new combat system but I wish we had the shank stance for the blades. Also some of the finishers were dumbed down but that's understandable.

    The sound effects are way better in 2018 you can feel how heavy the axe is and how powerful the blades slamming against the ground is but in ragnorak it feels like you are just swinging around some twigs as for the particle effects I can understand why they dialed back on those they did take up half the screen when you tried taking a photo during an attack

    I just watched your all combat comparison videos and its exactly how I remember it. All the GoW 2018 weapons(and fists) are heavy, hard, noisy and powerful. It feels so satisfaying. Also elemental effects more boosted. But in the Ragnarok, weapons are light, quieter and kinda weaker. I got dissopointed that how they downgraded the combat.

    I feel another reason they changed all the effects is due to the fact that there is so much stuff happening on screen. For example when I’m fight the beset let gravestones there is so much stuff happening on screen and I feel if they would have keep the same effects it would have been even more difficult to see. Especially the blades

      I thought about this while watching the video, too. On one hand I love how impressive and satisfying landing hits and combos are in GOW4 but I can totally see why they toned down the effects in GOWR because yeah sometimes you don't see important things like an incoming attack because of all the elemental bullshit going on lol. They should just let us zoom out the camera from Kratos, so we see more.

    Combos are smoother in gow 2018, but they did improve many aspects of the combat in Ragnarok. There’s a trade-off with both games unfortunately.

    I think the reason for having less effects (visual/sound) is because the amount of things the game already have.
    Because having all the realms and much more items make the game massive.
    So, if they have the same visuals and sound. The game wouldn't be on ps4, GOW Ragnarok would have been the most demanding performing game on the console. The ps4 would overheat horribly.
