Direct visual and feature comparison of the upcoming "God of War Ragnarök" [PS5] and the previous entry fo the series, "God of War" 2018].
This video covers a ton of content for God of War Ragnarök - with some light spoilers. I only discuss graphics and gameplay, though will cover any potential spoiler content with spoiler tags.
Both games are being played on a PS5. Ragnarök is set to its fidelity options for maximum quality. God of War [2018] already looks its best in the available 4K 60fps mode and therefore this option was chosen to represent the experience.

It's been a long time since I have been subscribed to this channel and still this is my go to comparison channel for new games.
I’m my opinion. I dislike that they took the skill tree for unarmed combat. Loved being able to mix up combos using melee and being able to hit L2 + R1 or R2 to recall your axe with an attack.
Not a game changer but missed how diverse the combat was. Seems they want you to really use your axe and blades mainly this time around.
Pretty sure a good chunk of melee stuff from the previous game is found here, they just found no need to flesh it out further.

The animation during the spoilery bit at 14:02 was so good.
It would be good animation if this was an over exagerated disney animated movie, but real people dont actually move like that.

The waiting is killing me inside. Just thinking about playing this game is giving me chills. And the best part about this is that the game is already been reviewed and everyone has the same opinion: Its a masterpiece in terms of gameplay and story.

I’m about 75% finished with Ragnarock and I like it but remember enjoying Gow 2018 more.
This is the best direct comparison channel. So detail. Love it!
So the tree thing....I've seen many games where something as simple as moving trees suck up a lot of resources. It may be as simple as them wanted to optimize their resources on other items such as the prints left in the snow instead. Now that it's winter, you don't need all of those leaves moving so they decided to redo the trees. Same with the explosions. Just my 2 cents.
Nick is one of those persons I always look out for when sequels to games drop.
I like 2018 GoW much more than GoWR simply because I got to play as Kratos for 100% of the game instead of 50%. 😁

But to me GoW 2018 was boring, didn't have enough voicelines etc (but I still loved and played the game) while in Ragnarok (which I haven't played yet but I watched and loved) it looks beautiful, fun, and challenging and the gameplay doesn't look bad or boring at all, I feel like you ppl are just complaining

@@Nick930 nice. no drawbacks to use Favor Quality + HFR + VRR then. Which is weird since how will the game decide what resolution from 1800p-2160p range to use if framerate is unlocked as much as it can go ?
@@HiCZoK they like insomniac have an algorithm where it only kicks in dynamic res if it would drop under a certain target (likely 38fps or so) at that res it’s not used to get higher frames so say a ps5 has the gpu grunt to run a scene at native 4k 41fps it would become 1800p to try and get closer to 60 it will stay at that native 4k 41fps

Ragnarok is one of the best games I’ve ever experienced, it does everything a sequel should do (and more).
It is for me too. I just wish it was Cory Barlog behind the wheel again. This game felt way more grounded in terms of the characters. And I do wish the characters had better accents to go with the Norse setting. This game should have a sequel and Ragnarok should have been the next game. I still very much enjoy it though. It’s better than 2018 in some ways but not all.
Important note:
60fps is mostly 1800p with TAAU to reach 4k. This makes the 3k image look virtually identical to the 4k one and at double the framerate
That arrow around Atreus' neck isn't jade, it's mistletoe. It's what broke Freya's invincibility spell that was cast on Baldur, which then made him vulnerable to all attacks. Which is also what lead to Baldur's death, Freya's hatred for Kratos, and the beginning of Fimble Winter, the precursor to Ragnarok.

The graphics of this game are good, but the rest of the game may not be detailed, Rockstar Games released a RDR 2 game in 2018 which had different physics of Hairs & Beard.

Another great detail is that in gow 4 greater the runic stats greater the elemental effects and this especially seen in runic attacks
i can only imagine what santa monica could have done on a next gen exclusive experience. ive seen some ps4 gameplay and it looks pretty damn incredible.

My problem with ragnarok was kratos become slightly weak than previous game. The armor also too colorful, especily the ng+. The previous one had best design like lava muspelheim glowing in dark place

Am I the only one here who prefers the 2018 color and graphics especially gameplay. When I first played ragnorok It was so Jarring from the different mechanics and combat idk 100 hours in now something about new one still feels cheap maybe???😅

I'm still playing gow 2018 on ps4...I gotta say the amount details, the environment, the landscapes everything is well crafted...pretty crazy.
biggest upgrade I'm seeing is lighting, water, particles and textures.
Especially the lighting. I think Nick kind of overlooked it, there is way better baked global illumination and it looks way more realistic how light is portrayed.
The particles of the Blades and Axe are far worse in Ragnarök

Favor Quality + HFR + VRR (40 fps mode unlocked framerate), the most overlooked setting for GOW Ragnarok. Basically you get the highest graphical fidelity at almost all the time 4k Native resolution (like in the 30fps mode) with very minor dips to 1800p (maybe heavy combat) and you also get close to Perfromance mode framerate because you start at 40 fps that is UNLOCKED due to having VRR turned ON. It can go up to 60, so to me that is the best of both worlds. The game is Eyecandy with this setting and you have a really fluid and playable gameplay experience.
Playing on performance mode, 60 fps or 80 fps (Favor Performance + HFR + VRR) you basically get GOW 2018 graphics, which are not bad bud it's like you are playing on MEDIUM settings, you miss out on that new global illumination, better shadows, particle effects, textures. You basically get a more immersive gameplay experience if you play in FAVOR QUALITY MODE (either 30fps or 40fps, locked or unlocked). Also Favor Performance mode outputs resolution mostly up to 1800p with rare instances of 2160p (only in 60 fps mode). 80 fps mode on the other hand stays at 1440p and doesnt go higher, thus you get a more blurried image.
So it's up to you to pick up what's best but for me Single Player story driven games are meant to be played in a more cinematic way with all the bells and whistles that this game has to offer. I highly recommend if you have a 4k 120hz VRR capable TV to opt in for Favor Quality + High Frame Rate ON + Variable Refresh Rate ON, you will be amazed!

The comparison I was waiting for. Honestly I don’t see huge leap in quality . The jump from ps4 to ps5 isn’t as noticeable as it was from ps3 to ps4
It is like upgrading a pc, it isnt only about graphics, u have frames, speed, etc. It is a difference, i know cuz i own both

@@lipiningole1381 Physics is one, waiting for the day when games will have no pop ins that break immersion but instead have a world that transitions seamlessly. More frames and better seamless world is what I want right now more than graphics. Nothing's worse then walking down a road to see lil things like trees start popping in out of nowhere.

To be honest, i prefer the HUD & MENU from GoW 2018.. in Ragnarök, the fonts are way to big in my opinion & that still on smallest Settings..(i play on 27" Gaming Monitor)
In 2018 it was more smooth & clear. also the effects from HUD was more ..lively with those smoke effects on it.
Just a small thing & i love the game so far.
I prefer the way Ragnarok looks but I do have to admit 2018 menus were a lot smoother and felt more modern

Looks sharper but the leap is not that hugh tho. Looks like they took the same game engine and touched up the details stuff like that.
The combat is like the devil may cry game from 2013 where u switch between Ur weapons for greater combos a d were u rely on Ur mum and dad's power dads being demonic and mum being angel like but in god or war fire and ice that's good when games rely on to different eliminates ether good evil or fire and ice opposites attract I can't wait for GOW Ragnarok to release it would be so cool to see how the blades of chaos will react and work in a icey environment cus they are fire weapons and the environment is all covered in ice it would be cool if the blade cause the snow and ice to melt on impact or something like that 😃
I really can't deal with 30fps anymore, im willing to go down to 1080p as long as i get a nice smooth 60 fps.
GOW Ragnarok is phenomenal, but it was designed for the PS4, and slightly enhanced for PS5. Now they need to make a true next-gen GOW designed exclusively for the PS5. Need more more games like Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, that is truly built for next-gen and take advantage of all the PS5 advanced specs.

I was going to say… the last game I thought was quite impressive on my PS4. This game, while I enjoy it, is nowhere close to as visually stunning as many other games I’ve played on my PS5. Lots of games from 2020 I think looked better.
It’s good, I’d buy it again, I’ve just come to expect PlayStation exclusives to push the graphical boundaries like they do with most of their AAA titles.

@@AnAncient76 Uhm… no. Developers find better and better ways to optimize console hardware as time goes on. That’s why GTA V was released on the PS3 and blew peoples minds with what it was able to accomplish with render distance and scaling. By the same token RDR2 came out at the end of the PS4 development cycle and still goes toe to toe with anything yet made on PS5. You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about.
The changes are so subtle you don't even see them END OF. It won't make any difference with people who's got a PS4....😲.

Finished both, 2nd one is not worth 60bucks 1st one is better but both are great games if I would have known better I would have waited for a price drop..

After playing on 60 FPS in God Of War 2018 I cant return to 30 I dont know how you do it lmao
I grew up on consoles that barely managed to push 15fps at times. 30fps locked is perfectly fine for this game, and with VRR enabled on my OLED, it plays even smoother and looks great
@@Nick930 Same. I've always disagreed with people that say once you got to 60 from 303 or 144 from 60 you can never go back. I've never understood people who mean that seriously. I'm happy 4k 30 fps is even achievable.
Games like this are great at a cinematic, lay back 30fps with controller, pizza, beer, etc. 40 is perfect. And the slight input delay you'd feel makes the character feel heavy weight. On other games it hides clunky animations or allows non-super-mushy textures. I'm always coming back from 144hz/fps to 30-40fps with no issues for non-fps games. Don't know what's this obsession with high fps everywhere, some story driven games really feel like watching a movie at 60fps.

Just played and finished both back to back on a LG OLED CX and they literally look identical. Very last gen Hopefully the next one is next gen only.
Same TV and 2018 is far less beautiful especially water, menus, effects than GoWR. GoWR is clearly incredible

I wish they hadn't changed the combat system up. I like the additioon of grappling with the chaos blades and the bigger emphasis on blocking/parrying but everything else was already perfect imo.
