I think this is how it should've went: When Kratos takes the blades out and wears them, his old theme is playing. But when he says to Athena "But i'm your monster no longer", his new theme starts playing from there. Implying that even though he has the blades back, he is still the new and reformed Kratos from throughout the game.
I really wish they would've done that. Having the GoW1 music play all the way through didn't feel right. It's saying "hey, old Kratos is back!". Anyone that's played the old games wouldn't really think that's a good thing. Old (young? lol) Kratos was a psycho douche.

As much as I love this moment, we shouldn't put a stigma into the devs heads, Cory Barlog had this problem when He was developing GoW 2. In this game the devs didn't have that stigma and now they literally have a scene that rivals the "ash scene" from the og GoW.
I still love how, in all of these incredible scenes, Mimir is still hanging on to Kratos's back buckle listening in on pretty much everything (despite not being able to see much)
And always quiet when it needs, not ruining certain moments. He is the smartest man alive for a reason, he knows when to talk and when to be a silent listener.

I just don't like the way this armor looks man. Really not a fan of it. And it sucks that they copy-pasted the Cod of War, Ares and Zeus Armours and just Made a different tint. Just Imagine if Ares' Armor was like in God of War 1 NG+, Zeus I have no idea honestly. Ascension ones didn't even make him look like Kratos so I don't want those. And for The Cod of War. Just c'mon. You can't have a Cod of War Armor and not have it look like a Costume. Yes I get the whole "You can have different sets" thing. But some of these Classic Armours should have a Full set and it stays that way. If you equip different armour they're Invisible. You only need one Piece of an Armor to get the big boy to show up. Sorry for the Complaint.

Me too i suppose. I was sitting with my mouth opened first experiencing this scene. The only flaw i remember - feel of incomplete, not hearing familiar notes.
Not only did this guy added the perfect music on beat but also equipped ares armor and the moves from previous games cyclone of chaos and tartarus rage💪😎

it's impressive how music can change a scene so much and make you feel a different way. maybe in the greek games the result could change too, like when poseidon is killed and the seas rise, inserting a sad song making you feel the consecuenses of kratos 's actions and what is the real sacrifice to obtain his revenge
Absolutely, music is the most important tool to make you feel. Even the saddest scene can be ruined with wrong music, and you won't feel what the scene intended you to. And if this scene is supposed to be without music, putting the right one can enhance the feelings like ten times. Very powerful tool. At least for me, idk, maybe i just love music too much and therefore give it much more attention 😅
i like that with the cold frozen land of norse myhtology, kratos fiery rage still burns as in this seen we see him let out the rage and furry he had when facing the greek pantheon, hands down one of the best parts.
Reminds me of how freya clearly explains that helheim is a land of horrible coldness and no fire is capable of burning there. However kratos gets the blades and everything burns in your path including in helheim. Awesome

mannnn that second finisher when he first leaves the cabin was timed perfectly with the bgm, this brought a tear to my eye, more developers need to do this. Nothing wrong with bringing back OG soundtracks especially for pinnacle moments like this, this made the scene 100 times better and i had chills the entire video great work man!
Hey, nice to see an old fan. I was watching my older brother playing the very first GoW i think back in 2006 before i dare to play it myself (it looked too dark, too adult and even kinda scary for me, but that is what attracted me as well). I think it was my first "big and serious" game experience, or maybe somewhere near that.
The way they did in the original game was pretty good... but this is golden. Its like a love letter to those that played the series, seeing Kratos once again become an instrument of pure destruction and rage.

You know if you build up the blades permafrost mechanic or whatever it’s called cuz I forgot, the runes stay lit on fire and give this cutscene a whole new look which I think is just beautiful
I’m glad you let some of the game’s actual soundtrack stay because it does go crazy hard the moment he steps into his house. But this is a huge improvement either way.

First and foremost, beautifully done. It's now perfect. Secondly, I've always found it incredible that Mimir NEVER comments on Athena's appearance here. Leaving it very ambiguous as to whether or not Athena ACTUALLY came back to haunt him, or if Kratos in all of his trauma, his pain, his regret, manifested her, and thus she's merely some figment of his own imagination. His mind reminding him, taunting him, as she would, (as Ares would as well) because of all of these feelings, the memories, and the hatred he feels toward those connected (including himself) towards those infamous blades. "...but there is one unavoidable truth you will never escape. You cannot change. You will always be a monster." So many discussion have been had about this scene, but I find it fascinating that she comments that he cannot escape his past, his guilt, his shame, HIMSELF. And he has accepted it. He cannot run from it. He accepts it. All the pain he caused. The countless deaths. The massacres. The killing of his wife and child. The destruction of Greece. And the chaos he left to exact his revenge on an entire pantheon, his own family no less. He accepts it. It is essentially him saying. "I have tried to travel back in time. I have cheated death. I have destroyed my family, a pantheon, an even those undeserving. I accept I am a monster. But I WILL NOT BE THE MONSTER YOU MADE ME." It is a proclamation. It is an assertion of identity. And his way of not simply becoming the thing he left behind, but reforging himself into a necessary being he can channel, using blades he swore to never use again because they represent nothing but suffering and death. They brought no good, and now, he finds that they may actually serve some good here. So much in one brief scene. Kudos to Santa Monica Studios here.
The first time I played this game. I had no idea what was happening. The sky turning dark, thunder and lightning. The animals turning away. When he equipped the blades. Something terrible is about to happen.

I love how Warrior’s Truth fits perfectly with the scene, especially the way it ends after Kratos has taken out all of the Hel walkers and the song doesn’t feel out of place in the Norse setting. I really wish it was used in the actual game
I was confused at first. "What the hell does he mean, "right version?" It was already perfect." Then I hear The Vengeful Spartan and the biggest smile in history forms on my face
People who are complaining about music completely missed the point. This GOW music signified the bloodlust Kratos had while using the blades. His sole purpose while delivering each blow was to kill Zeus at the end and kill anyone who crossed his path. However in this part he is using the blades out of grief and pain and for the cure of his son. This is love for Atreus and thus the music is supposed to be inspiring and not making players bloodthirsty for kills but rather empathy for kratos as he is about to lose the one last thing he loved.
Thank you for this comment, the old music is cool but just does not work with the context of this scene. It absolutely doesn’t fit the mood of him putting the blades back on. The more somber music they used in the game is much more fitting and gives me chills everytime. They curated this game perfectly in every detail, idk why people have to go “but the old music is better!!” You can have that opinion, but it absolutely is not better for this scene nor for really any part of this game. Maybe if they had done a norse remixed version of an old theme, but even then. The games about a new and reformed kratos, what you said about his reasoning for the blades is exactly right and why that old music doesn’t fit here
For those who played the fist and only three games before this the blade are a actual part of him and not just a burden because he wears that on his skin but with these blades you took back your freedom but not your sin so even though they would remind him of his past they should remind the gamers of our accomplishments. With them we gave back the world we destroyed hope and hope made true with no more godly intervention and that in my eyes deserve he hype. Yes he is putting on his chains but we are not because with them we can not be stopped and I want that to be hype

God of War Ascension (the music playing during the fight) is my absolute favorite version of the main theme. I don’t know if it’s because they had the most technology with it being the last of the original music specialist and they went out with a bang or what but it’s the most powerful version I’ve heard
Yeah it's awesome, and the quality of it is definitely playing a huge role. My personal favourite version is this (th-cam.com/video/8WdGYMS6OPc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0GM9LzjEt9qSUlkv), but sadly it didn't aged well. And the newest Valhalla version is good too, but it's not that aggressive and powerful (understandable why), so the best is still remains Ascension's.

Its also cool because that's the InGame Version rather than the album version therefor it plays louder and the inception horn cues in much louder and progressive to compliant the overall sound. Which to me is crazy because that's the first GOW and it still stands up as a arguable number 1. But I agree, Ascension did the absolute best at depicting pure power and emotional chaos in each one of their soundtracks.
One minor detail I wish this scene had is that,when kratos caresses the blade, I think it should cast orange cinder around, as his fingers slide through it.
I think it'd work better if they had the old theme playing in the background as he puts the chains on and Athena's talking to him, but when Kratos begins walking out it gets overpowered by his new theme

This just makes me wish they brought out the horns and drums for when Kratos had ever slipped into his past ways. Aka, the Blades of Chaos, when he killed a few gods, and when he perhaps explained his past.
this means deep down that rage still burns even tho he killed zeus and moved on had a child. that pain from having his own familys blood on his hands still exists and there will always be a part of him that is the ghost of sparta. and any god who sees him and knows his past will expect to see that from him. making the fights more intense and more brutal
I truly love seeing the blades cleaned, and covered in those Norse Runes, but I think the original scene works with them more with their worn, and rusted state because it show who Kratos is right now. A tool of war left to wither, and break down no longer with the flames of hate blazing everything in sight. Now that fire has been buried awaiting to shine once more but this time for a cause not to destroy the hated but to save what is loved.
I loved how in Ragnarök Kratos answered Mimir, when he wanted to use some sword (relic in game) that has been used for a terrible deeds. "The story of this sword is still writing, and people would compare the good things with the bad and decide for themselves", something like that. This also could be said about Blades of Chaos. Once a weapon of destruction, now it will be used for good. I guess. I don't think they gonna get rid of them in the next game.
@@CoolSaver hard to tell. I heard that the Soear in Ragnorok maybe the new true weapon for Kratos as part of his Spartan upbringing. Perhaps Atreus will have either the Axe or Blades passed to him as he grows

Yeah, when i first saw the blades, i expected old battle theme as well, maybe in a new arrangement. This whole scene a fan service, and without classic motives it just felt incomplete.
I think it is on the documentary of the game that Cory Barlog says he actually thought of this very same idea for this scene. Ultimately, and as much as they loved it, they had to respect the idea that this was not Kratos coming back to his "Ghost of Sparta" days, which the soundtrack evokes to. This Kratos is a somewhat redeemed Kratos, getting back his Blades of Chaos not for vengeance, but to save his son. The moment called for the track on this scene to NOT be that of the old games, nor any other track of this new game for that matter.
@@javibentue70 i don't remember this from the film, but i got the idea. I think he returned not to "Vengeful Ghost of Sparta", but to "Monster" in his own eyes. Basically, what he said: "Yes, i'm still a monster, but not your monster, Athena. I will use this monster to my purpose, not yours." So, the blades and old theme means the return of the old monster, not the "vengeful spartan" (though this is the name of track playing in this video... remake of it).
damn, it really awesome if whenever Kratos uses The Blade of Chaos, his old theme plays, the sky turn red and Athena starts taunting him.. basically whenever he uses The Blade Chaos, he become The Ghost of Sparta... this would provide a clear visualization of his internal conflict of who he was and who he is now.

I just don't like the way this armor looks man. Really not a fan of it. And it sucks that they copy-pasted the Cod of War, Ares and Zeus Armours and just Made a different tint. Just Imagine if Ares' Armor was like in God of War 1 NG+, Zeus I have no idea honestly. Ascension ones didn't even make him look like Kratos so I don't want those. And for The Cod of War. Just c'mon. You can't have a Cod of War Armor and not have it look like a Costume. Yes I get the whole "You can have different sets" thing. But some of these Classic Armours should have a Full set and it stays that way. If you equip different armour they're Invisible. You only need one Piece of an Armor to get the big boy to show up. Sorry for the Complaint.

it's impressive how music can change a scene so much and make you feel a different way. maybe in the greek games the result could change too, like when poseidon is killed and the seas rise, inserting a sad song making you feel the consecuenses of kratos 's actions and what is the real sacrifice to obtain his revenge
Absolutely, music is the most important tool to make you feel. Even the saddest scene can be ruined with wrong music, and you won't feel what the scene intended you to. And if this scene is supposed to be without music, putting the right one can enhance the feelings like ten times. Very powerful tool. At least for me, idk, maybe i just love music too much and therefore give it much more attention 😅

Hey, nice to see an old fan. I was watching my older brother playing the very first GoW i think back in 2006 before i dare to play it myself (it looked too dark, too adult and even kinda scary for me, but that is what attracted me as well). I think it was my first "big and serious" game experience, or maybe somewhere near that.
The way they did in the original game was pretty good... but this is golden. Its like a love letter to those that played the series, seeing Kratos once again become an instrument of pure destruction and rage.

First and foremost, beautifully done. It's now perfect.
Secondly, I've always found it incredible that Mimir NEVER comments on Athena's appearance here. Leaving it very ambiguous as to whether or not Athena ACTUALLY came back to haunt him, or if Kratos in all of his trauma, his pain, his regret, manifested her, and thus she's merely some figment of his own imagination. His mind reminding him, taunting him, as she would, (as Ares would as well) because of all of these feelings, the memories, and the hatred he feels toward those connected (including himself) towards those infamous blades.
"...but there is one unavoidable truth you will never escape. You cannot change. You will always be a monster."
So many discussion have been had about this scene, but I find it fascinating that she comments that he cannot escape his past, his guilt, his shame, HIMSELF.
And he has accepted it. He cannot run from it. He accepts it. All the pain he caused. The countless deaths. The massacres. The killing of his wife and child. The destruction of Greece. And the chaos he left to exact his revenge on an entire pantheon, his own family no less.
He accepts it.
It is essentially him saying. "I have tried to travel back in time. I have cheated death. I have destroyed my family, a pantheon, an even those undeserving. I accept I am a monster. But I WILL NOT BE THE MONSTER YOU MADE ME."
It is a proclamation. It is an assertion of identity. And his way of not simply becoming the thing he left behind, but reforging himself into a necessary being he can channel, using blades he swore to never use again because they represent nothing but suffering and death. They brought no good, and now, he finds that they may actually serve some good here.
So much in one brief scene. Kudos to Santa Monica Studios here.

The first time I played this game. I had no idea what was happening. The sky turning dark, thunder and lightning. The animals turning away. When he equipped the blades. Something terrible is about to happen.
The music is mixed very well with the original sounds heard from the game. The timing of amplification and the decrease of volume is top tier.

I love how Warrior’s Truth fits perfectly with the scene, especially the way it ends after Kratos has taken out all of the Hel walkers and the song doesn’t feel out of place in the Norse setting. I really wish it was used in the actual game

They REALLY should have made a Norse Remix of his Classic Theme. Look, his new theme is amazing but c'mon man. Give people some Nostalgia.
People who are complaining about music completely missed the point. This GOW music signified the bloodlust Kratos had while using the blades. His sole purpose while delivering each blow was to kill Zeus at the end and kill anyone who crossed his path.
However in this part he is using the blades out of grief and pain and for the cure of his son. This is love for Atreus and thus the music is supposed to be inspiring and not making players bloodthirsty for kills but rather empathy for kratos as he is about to lose the one last thing he loved.
Thank you for this comment, the old music is cool but just does not work with the context of this scene. It absolutely doesn’t fit the mood of him putting the blades back on. The more somber music they used in the game is much more fitting and gives me chills everytime. They curated this game perfectly in every detail, idk why people have to go “but the old music is better!!” You can have that opinion, but it absolutely is not better for this scene nor for really any part of this game. Maybe if they had done a norse remixed version of an old theme, but even then. The games about a new and reformed kratos, what you said about his reasoning for the blades is exactly right and why that old music doesn’t fit here
For those who played the fist and only three games before this the blade are a actual part of him and not just a burden because he wears that on his skin but with these blades you took back your freedom but not your sin so even though they would remind him of his past they should remind the gamers of our accomplishments. With them we gave back the world we destroyed hope and hope made true with no more godly intervention and that in my eyes deserve he hype. Yes he is putting on his chains but we are not because with them we can not be stopped and I want that to be hype

God of War Ascension (the music playing during the fight) is my absolute favorite version of the main theme.
I don’t know if it’s because they had the most technology with it being the last of the original music specialist and they went out with a bang or what but it’s the most powerful version I’ve heard
Yeah it's awesome, and the quality of it is definitely playing a huge role. My personal favourite version is this (th-cam.com/video/8WdGYMS6OPc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0GM9LzjEt9qSUlkv), but sadly it didn't aged well. And the newest Valhalla version is good too, but it's not that aggressive and powerful (understandable why), so the best is still remains Ascension's.

Its also cool because that's the InGame Version rather than the album version therefor it plays louder and the inception horn cues in much louder and progressive to compliant the overall sound. Which to me is crazy because that's the first GOW and it still stands up as a arguable number 1.
But I agree, Ascension did the absolute best at depicting pure power and emotional chaos in each one of their soundtracks.
they seriously missed a huge oportunity with this scene by not using some old school God of War music, the music here fits so well

One minor detail I wish this scene had is that,when kratos caresses the blade, I think it should cast orange cinder around, as his fingers slide through it.

this means deep down that rage still burns even tho he killed zeus and moved on had a child. that pain from having his own familys blood on his hands still exists and there will always be a part of him that is the ghost of sparta. and any god who sees him and knows his past will expect to see that from him. making the fights more intense and more brutal

I truly love seeing the blades cleaned, and covered in those Norse Runes, but I think the original scene works with them more with their worn, and rusted state because it show who Kratos is right now. A tool of war left to wither, and break down no longer with the flames of hate blazing everything in sight. Now that fire has been buried awaiting to shine once more but this time for a cause not to destroy the hated but to save what is loved.
I loved how in Ragnarök Kratos answered Mimir, when he wanted to use some sword (relic in game) that has been used for a terrible deeds. "The story of this sword is still writing, and people would compare the good things with the bad and decide for themselves", something like that. This also could be said about Blades of Chaos. Once a weapon of destruction, now it will be used for good. I guess. I don't think they gonna get rid of them in the next game.
@@CoolSaver hard to tell. I heard that the Soear in Ragnorok maybe the new true weapon for Kratos as part of his Spartan upbringing. Perhaps Atreus will have either the Axe or Blades passed to him as he grows

Yeah, when i first saw the blades, i expected old battle theme as well, maybe in a new arrangement. This whole scene a fan service, and without classic motives it just felt incomplete.
I think it is on the documentary of the game that Cory Barlog says he actually thought of this very same idea for this scene. Ultimately, and as much as they loved it, they had to respect the idea that this was not Kratos coming back to his "Ghost of Sparta" days, which the soundtrack evokes to. This Kratos is a somewhat redeemed Kratos, getting back his Blades of Chaos not for vengeance, but to save his son. The moment called for the track on this scene to NOT be that of the old games, nor any other track of this new game for that matter.
@@javibentue70 i don't remember this from the film, but i got the idea. I think he returned not to "Vengeful Ghost of Sparta", but to "Monster" in his own eyes. Basically, what he said: "Yes, i'm still a monster, but not your monster, Athena. I will use this monster to my purpose, not yours." So, the blades and old theme means the return of the old monster, not the "vengeful spartan" (though this is the name of track playing in this video... remake of it).
