You wouldn't have wasted wort in your Herms coil if you ran your sparge water from the hot liquor tank through the coils then to the mash tun. Not only do you save Wort but you clean your coil at the same time

I use a green scotch brite dish scrubber. It cleans good and doesn’t leave any iron to rust.
