Great review! I bought one recently for a research project on biodiversity and I'm very happy with it. Most of my budget went towards a telephoto lens and a macro lens. I got the original battery with it and it's worked well despite being more than 10 years old. Also, the shutter sounds great.

@@BoostLeekdMedia thanks! I do have the kit lens and a prime 35mm 1.8f lens DX. Do you have any experience with that lens? Is this a good starter lens? Is it also true that if I stop down all the way to 1.8f it can tend to be a little blurry? Should I keep it at 2.0f and higher?
It depends what kind of photography you're doing and what your budget is. If you're new to photography, I think an excellent lens to start out with is a 17-50 F/2.8 lens from either Sigma or Tamron. Tamron SP 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD is the lens that will work on the D5000. It can be had for fairly cheap as well. I have a huge indoor conference to cover soon with this camera, and i have the original lense and the 50mm lense. What settings do you recommend ? I struggle with the lighting and steadiness of the picture :(
Settings can REALLY vary unfortunately depending on how much light you're working with. If you're working with limited light, make sure you have a tripod or a monopod. I would keep the shutter speed at 1/100 and the iso between 500-1000 depending on how much light you're working with.
From what your saying, this isn't good for long videos/ or web streaming. Can it web stream? However, if I'm looking to straight shoot pictures, grab the 50 mm 1.8g lens and its golden? Also, do you recommend a particular setting for outdoor pics vs indoor pics (like bands - I'm a musician but also nature lover)
I haven't used it for web streaming. It looks like you can but you will need to use/find programs that can utilize the D5000's video capabilities for streaming. As for recording long videos, the D5000 can only record 5 minutes max. The 50mm 1.8G is a great portrait lens and as for settings, it really varies depending on your lighting situation. Settings can change from nature to building shadows to indoor rooms. So, there isn't a "best setting" for your situation.
Love this review! I’ve had my D5000 since December 2010. Recently started doing more with it. You mentioned the 18-200 lens and the 55-300 VR lens in your video and the comments. Do you have a recommendation on where to purchase these? Thank you.
Thanks! You can check out National Camera Exchange to see if they have any available. I know they have an eBay store as well, just make sure it's the National Camera Exchange in Minnesota :) If you can not find any there, I would highly recommend B&H or Adorama. B&H and Adorama's 'used gear' ratings is pretty close to what they rate their stuff at, especially for used stuff. I hope this helps.
I am a novice photographer. I travel a lot and at the end of the year I will be going on an African safari. What camera and lense(S) would you recommend? My budget is approximately $1,500.
I just tried it and I had to format my 64gb in the D5000. If that doesn't work, try formatting the SD card on your computer. Then, put it in your D5000 and format the memory card again. As I said earlier, I formatted my Sandisk 64gb memory card in the D5000. After that, it was usable. I hope this helps.
The D5000 is excellent for point and shoot. The 18-55 is good but if you want a decent lens, I would look at the 17-50mm F/2.8 lens from Sigma or Tamron. I recently made a review on that lens here ( th-cam.com/video/uh1E3ojiq4M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IDFTL48BZIXsRiBD ) but that lens I reviewed will not autofocus with the D5000. But it's one I would suggest for using for point and shoot and could improve your night time shots as well. I hope this helps.
On the D5000, I'm always in Manual mode with 1 button that is dedicated to the ISO. For me, I always adjust my ISO manually instead of automatically. For the color profile, I leave it at Standard. But if I'm not feeling like editing, then I will choose 'Vibrant'
@@BoostLeekdMedia ahh gotcha. I'm assuming you're probably using the Fn button for ISO? What about white balance. Do you ever use Auto or are you always adjusting white balance every time?
@@tomle2553 I only adjust the White Balance when the lighting in a room or environment is VERY harsh. For example, if you're inside a room where the lighting has a VERY harsh yellow/orange or green tone, then, you can adjust the white balance that way. It helps in those situations. But I usually leave it in auto for most situations because I can edit the colors in photo editing programs. And yes, I do use the Fn button for ISO. :)
There are a few. I think a good lens to start out with is the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD lens, since it's much more versatile. There are no "perfect settings" since it really varies on lighting conditions and lens.
Veru lovely video, i have been practicing photography for some years now and i trying to take it to a more professional level will the D5000 be a good camera to start with as a professional photographer?
You can definitely get some "pro" looking images from the D5000. A "professional photographer" can use any camera and create the image they want with it. The D5000 is more than enough depending on what kind of photography you're doing.
@@BoostLeekdMedia thank you so much for your reply I really appreciate it, but one more question please you said depending on the type of photography I want to do would it be okay for portrait photography? I do more portrait shoots
The upgrade from the D5000 to the D5200 is the better video quality, better image quality and better autofocus speeds and performance. But I would still suggest getting quality lenses if you're moving from them D5000 to the D5200. Depending on your level of photography, I would definitely get lenses instead of "upgrading". Hope this helps!
The "Best Lens" depends on your style of photography. It's extremely hard to say since I don't know what you style of photography is and what you budget is.
Would you buy the D5000 over cannon eos rebel t7? I’ve read a dozen reviews and am torn. I know the owner of the Nikon and that great care / little use occurred. The cannon is new. Can get both for about same price. Both come with 55 and 300 lens. Want to use for nature and people shots. Really appreciate your response/ opinion.
Hi! I like yours videos, very informative. Actually i am looking for the nikon camera. I am just take photos for hobby. Actually i am bit confused about which camera should I choose nikon d90 or d5100. I am only concerned about photography not video.
Thanks. Strictly for photography, I would get the D90 because the D90 can utilize the AF-D lenses. The D90 will autofocus with the older (and under rated) Nikon AF-D lenses. I hope this helps!
I really appreciate your channel! Have been binging for a while today. But one question, I'm between a $20 D80 and a $75 D5000. The D80 is a steal even though it doesn't come with batteries, but the D5000 seems better quality so I won't have to buy another one sooner and it comes with a battery, though I probably have to buy a new one anyway. Another deciding factor is which one will do better with Nikon 55mm f/2.8 Micro, a lens I also can get for a good price and really eager to use. I'm a beginner photographer and this would be my first DSLR, after coming from a simple 2010s point and shoot. I want to learn how to use one without it being too oversimplified, which is why I picked older Nikons. Any advice is super appreciated, and you got yourself a new sub :]
Thank you for the kind words and the sub! As for the cameras, the D80 is only sketchy because there is no battery so you won't know if it's working or fully functional. But, for $20, it's not a bad deal. I would definitely get the D5000 though. That micro lens isn't bad at all but it is a fully manual lens, which is fine if you don't need the autofocus. I hope this helps.
@@BoostLeekdMedia This really does help, thank you! The website is KEH which is a bit controversial to some, but I might take my chances and go with the D5000+a couple of lenses. Again, thank you a bunch!
Hey Khoua, I am an amateur photographer, I started off using my dads D7100( with the kit lens 18-140mm and a 50mm 1.8), its great! but at the same time I've been seeing literally every photographer right now using a Fuji/Sony/Leica...i was thinking about getting a Fuji X-e4 cos I really like the low profile and smaller lenses. The thing is I'm kinda in a dilemma as to whether I should even get a new camera. As you deal with a lot of cameras in general and older ones as well, your advice would be most valuable for me. Thanks and best wishes.
Thanks @kamals_eye ! Difficult to say because it depends how much you're using your camera and what kind of photography you like to capture. But, I would add that you don't let the folks with the latest and greatest gear make you get the latest and greatest. A really good lens goes a long ways. But, if you are needing a more 'portable' camera, I can see why the mirrorless cameras make an amazing option. I love my Z50. The Z30 is basically the Z50 but just a little smaller. Personally, I would stick with Nikon since you already have the incredible Nikon D7100 and 2 amazing lenses. I hope this helps!
It's already been said, but don't get too hung up about gear being older. As long as it's in good working order, it'll surprise you just how good it can be if used well. I have a D3000 and a D3S. While my big full frame camera is 'superior' in many ways, I've recently attached some nice glass to my D3000 and really been enjoying getting back out with that. It's started to bring back the passion and drive that I lost over the years, and has more than proven it's capable of keeping up as long as I do my bit (slow down, take in my surroundings and utilise the correct train of thought in getting my shots).
This is a great review. I just purchased it today on eBay. Can I ask, what would be the best lens for food photography? I will mostly be using it for that purpose. Thanks
It's a good camera for nature photography. You will need a good lens and understand the camera's autofocus settings as well. As for the lens, it really depends but I think the 18-200 is a great start. If you're doing nature photography, the 55-300 VR lens is a great start as well, especially for the price.
Okey so im a TOTAL beginner (as in i had camera in my hands like one time) and i was concidering buying nikon d5000 (200 euro) and nikon d3500 (320 euro) both are used and im really trying to stay low on budget but im also looking to get pretty good action photos (horse riding) so should i invest a bit more in teh d3500 or just get d5000. Thanks!
The D3500 is a better buy for that price. But if you're on a budget, the D5000 is a good start. Especially if you can put about another 150-200 euros onto a decent telephoto lens.
If you found a legitimate Nikon D5300 for $72 USD, get it. But if you meant to type $720 USD, I would not buy it. For $720USDm the D5300 is not worth that price. I hope this helps.
There are a few factors that could be giving you bad results too: low light situations, camera settings, type of photography and autofocus settings. Depending on what kind of photography you're doing, it's hard to say what lens to suggest. I would suggest a prime lens like the 50mm F/1.8G or the 35mm F/1.8G DX lens. Another lens I would recommend is the Sigma 17-50 F/2.8, which would be an excellent all-around lens that will replace the 18-55 lens. Hope this helps
Hi. I have this camera, and I am not an expert photographer. I don't do editing either. When I take a picture, it looks good in the camra, it looks good on my computer. But, when I go to get it printed the pictures come out dark. Any advice? 😅
Hi! I aspire to be a wedding photographer. Which camera do you recommend? And also, it would mean so much to me if you could give any advice on which laptop to invest in (for wedding video editing) and which hand crane to buy? Thank you so much in advance!❤
Depends on your budget. Hard to suggest since it's a pretty heavy investment, financially. The decent laptop will already be between $800-$1200, and that's for the mid-tier level laptops. As for cameras and lenses, if I were to start over, especially for weddings, I would get 2 camera bodies. My first body would be the Z8 with the Tamron 35-150 F/2-2.8 lens. The second body would be the 'older' pro body, like the Nikon D3 with a nice wide lens prime on it, preferable a 28mm F/1.4. This is just me and my style of photography. I know there are wedding photographers out there that use 2 prime lenses so it really depends on your style of photography. I hope this helps!
I have a d5000 and recently started birding, what lens would you recommend that wouldn’t break the bank, I’m just starting out so looking for something affordable. Thanks
I love my 35mm F/1.8G DX lens. Use it whenever I get the chance to use it at family events! Here's my review on it: th-cam.com/video/UyEXxOeGGM4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=G51lC5T_RDU0oSNK
Brand new, there aren't too many options. If you're looking for a used camera, if you can find a Nikon D5100 with some lenses, thats a good start. But, I've also seen a few used Sony A6000 go for under $400. The Sony A6000 is a nice entry level mirrorless camera. Another great camera I would recommend is the Nikon D7000 or D7100.
Check the shutter count. If it's $200 just for the camera body, it's not worth it. If it's $200 with 2 lenses, memory cards and some accessories, it's a decent deal.
I would not rely on it for fast moving subjects. Unfortunately, the video recording isn't reliable for fast moving subjects or for doing fast autofocus. but if you're recording family/party events, it's okay but still, something I would not rely on for reliably capturing important moments.
A good lens will go a good ways but also understanding how to use the camera as well. The D5000 is very capable of capturing very nice images if you know what settings you're choosing. I hope this helps.
I just got done using my D5000 this past week for a photoshoot and the video quality is not the greatest. It's grainy because (1), you're recording in an environment where there is limited light, and/or the camera is automatically adjusting the ISO depending on what you're recording. It is frustrating and I would not rely on the D5000's camera to record important events or moments.
Actually sir i want to buy this camera....which is 12 years old....and i am getting this camera in rs 12000 Indian currency. What should i do. With an extra lens.
It's a great camera to learn with. I have no knowledge of what is priced very high or priced very low in certain countries but if that is within your budget, it's a great camera to start with. As for lenses, it depends what your style of photography is. There are no best lenses because the best lens is what fits your style of photography.
This is a terrible question and I feel terrible asking it but you wouldn’t happen to have any cameras that you don’t use or might be able to donate? I’m looking to start up photography and honestly just don’t have the funds to go towards a camera. I know this is crappy to ask but I love photography and have always wanted to take photos I just don’t have anything to start up. My wife and I have three children and just had our fourth and we are perfectly fine as far as everything else in life, I would just love to take photos of our family that are clean and crisp.

I am using the Nikon EN-EL9a (7.2V 1080mAh 7.8Wh) battery. I
From what your saying, this isn't good for long videos/ or web streaming.
Thanks for making a vid! Looking for a gift for someone. Does this record sound as well? I know some cameras don't.
You're welcome! It does record sound.
I picked up a used D5000 with the the 35mm, 55mm and the 200mm for $300 in marketplace. I love it.
video recording is blocked in my nikon d5000 can you help me
please, I have a niko d5000, but I don't know how to record video, can you please explain to me
Press the LV (live view) button at the right of the display and then press the OK button to start recording.
Hi. Great vid.
If you use it for brief TH-cam videos not just photos is it any good, for vids also?
The D5000's only downside for video is the autofocus. You can still record videos but do not rely on the autofocus to keep focus on your subject(s).

I am a novice photographer. I travel a lot and at the end of the year I will be going on an African safari. What camera and lense(S) would you recommend? My budget is approximately $1,500.
I would highly suggest the Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR
Hey I have Nikond5000 and I have bought sandisk 64Gb sd card. But it is unable to detect. Can you please help?
I just tried it and I had to format my 64gb in the D5000. If that doesn't work, try formatting the SD card on your computer. Then, put it in your D5000 and format the memory card again. As I said earlier, I formatted my Sandisk 64gb memory card in the D5000. After that, it was usable. I hope this helps.
Is it good for point and shoot what lenses would work for point and shoots, is it good for nighttime shots?
The D5000 is excellent for point and shoot. The 18-55 is good but if you want a decent lens, I would look at the 17-50mm F/2.8 lens from Sigma or Tamron. I recently made a review on that lens here ( th-cam.com/video/uh1E3ojiq4M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=IDFTL48BZIXsRiBD ) but that lens I reviewed will not autofocus with the D5000. But it's one I would suggest for using for point and shoot and could improve your night time shots as well. I hope this helps.
awesomeee thanks!
You bet!
Can you tell me what lens you are suggesting to use with this camera? I couldn’t understand you :)
Sure! Lens Recommendations were these:
Sigma 10-20: amzn.to/3qVnk3K
Nikon 50mm 1.8G - amzn.to/2SNR2bO
Can you let me know what settings you used? Do you typically shoot in A, S, M? What color profile? Is your ISO typically on auto?
What lenses can be used with this camera. I just got my husband this camera.
There are a few. I think a good lens to start out with is the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD lens, since it's much more versatile. There are no "perfect settings" since it really varies on lighting conditions and lens.
@@BoostLeekdMedia thank you so much. My apologies for the late reply.
@@Elijahleleji Yes, it can definitely be used for portraits :)
@@BoostLeekdMediado you think it’s good enough for running race events? Taking photos of my friends running, etc…
I have a D5000 do you have any pros to me upgrading to a 5200 or having that one as well?
The upgrade from the D5000 to the D5200 is the better video quality, better image quality and better autofocus speeds and performance. But I would still suggest getting quality lenses if you're moving from them D5000 to the D5200. Depending on your level of photography, I would definitely get lenses instead of "upgrading". Hope this helps!
hello sr. what is the best lens for d5000?.
The Canon is a better deal, especially if it's the same price.
@@BoostLeekdMedia thank you
Can you use canon lense with Nikon lenses, and vice versa
You will need a lens adapter to use Canon lenses on a Nikon body.
It's still a good camera especially if you're on a budget
100% agreed.
Hey Khoua,
I am an amateur photographer, I started off using my dads D7100( with the kit lens 18-140mm and a 50mm 1.8), its great! but at the same time I've been seeing literally every photographer right now using a Fuji/Sony/Leica...i was thinking about getting a Fuji X-e4 cos I really like the low profile and smaller lenses.
@@BoostLeekdMedia well, i guess that settles it! Gonna stick with the D7100 💪🏼.
Thank you!😁
It's already been said, but don't get too hung up about gear being older.

Thanks
Is this camera great for nature photography? And do I need to get the lens in order for it to take a good picture?
It's a good camera for nature photography. You will need a good lens and understand the camera's autofocus settings as well.
As for the lens, it really depends but I think the 18-200 is a great start. If you're doing nature photography, the 55-300 VR lens is a great start as well, especially for the price.
Thank you
You're welcome
Okey so im a TOTAL beginner (as in i had camera in my hands like one time) and i was concidering buying nikon d5000 (200 euro) and nikon d3500 (320 euro) both are used and im really trying to stay low on budget but im also looking to get pretty good action photos (horse riding) so should i invest a bit more in teh d3500 or just get d5000. Thanks!
The D3500 is a better buy for that price. But if you're on a budget, the D5000 is a good start. Especially if you can put about another 150-200 euros onto a decent telephoto lens.
Can i use it for planespotting?
Yes, you can. Just make sure you understand the autofocus modes in the D5000 when taking photos of planes.
Is the Nikon 5300 good in 2023? That would be my first DSLR. It's 72$ kit
If you found a legitimate Nikon D5300 for $72 USD, get it. But if you meant to type $720 USD, I would not buy it. For $720USDm the D5300 is not worth that price. I hope this helps.
How do I get compatible sd cards? 😢😅
I'm using a Sandisk 16gb card. Not sure where you're at but most electronics store should carry those SD cards.
Hi! I have a question about this camera. I have it, but I don’t love the photo outcome and I think it’s my lens. What lens should I get?
There are a few factors that could be giving you bad results too: low light situations, camera settings, type of photography and autofocus settings.
Depending on what kind of photography you're doing, it's hard to say what lens to suggest. I would suggest a prime lens like the 50mm F/1.8G or the 35mm F/1.8G DX lens. Another lens I would recommend is the Sigma 17-50 F/2.8, which would be an excellent all-around lens that will replace the 18-55 lens.
Hope this helps
@@BoostLeekdMedia this is all helpful!! Is there any way you can reset all the settings on the camera? thank you so much for your help
Hi. I have this camera, and I am not an expert photographer. I don't do editing either. When I take a picture, it looks good in the camra, it looks good on my computer. But, when I go to get it printed the pictures come out dark. Any advice? 😅
It could be the printer. I know my old printer did this and I had to make some adjustments.
Thanks
@@BoostLeekdMedia hey, thank you for a thorough answer! Very much appreciated 😊
I bought the nikon 50mm as you recommended. Can you recommend a 35mm?
I love my 35mm F/1.8G DX lens. Use it whenever I get the chance to use it at family events! Here's my review on it: th-cam.com/video/UyEXxOeGGM4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=G51lC5T_RDU0oSNK
Is this a decent camera for Instagram Marketing, specifically taking snaps of fashion items for stories and reels? Thanks
Yes it is. :)
Hey what do you think would be a good beginner camera for price around 300-400$?
Brand new, there aren't too many options. If you're looking for a used camera, if you can find a Nikon D5100 with some lenses, thats a good start. But, I've also seen a few used Sony A6000 go for under $400. The Sony A6000 is a nice entry level mirrorless camera.
Another great camera I would recommend is the Nikon D7000 or D7100.
Is one in mint condition good for $200?
Check the shutter count. If it's $200 just for the camera body, it's not worth it. If it's $200 with 2 lenses, memory cards and some accessories, it's a decent deal.
Is this good for video recording also?
I would not rely on it for fast moving subjects. Unfortunately, the video recording isn't reliable for fast moving subjects or for doing fast autofocus. but if you're recording family/party events, it's okay but still, something I would not rely on for reliably capturing important moments.
What camera would you recommend for recording
yes. definitely a good dslr.
It really is!
Hello i literally bought this camera like 3 days and I think it’s quiet bad but what do you think if I buy a bike expensive lens
