- Yes. Is it still a capable camera? Yes. Is it the cheapest Nikon DSLR? Maybe.
This video is dedicated to the Nikon D40 and classic DSLR photographers! It was my first camera and the colors from it are absolutely amazing thanks to it's CCD sensor.
Do you have one? If so, leave a comment!

Replaced my D40x and D200 with a D700. Not really small lol.
I have a 2006 D80 with a kit zoom. I like it a lot. Been thinking about full frame D600 as an additional camera. I was quite proficient using a 35mm Nikon FM SLR and made a bit of money doing the odd wedding, christening and publicity shoot. I have not felt the same passion about digital for some reason even though I do know my way around computers. Thanks for another great video. I kept my Nikon FM too.
Very nice to know you still have your D80! The D600 is one camera I'd like to get my hands on. It was the camera I was seriously considering before the D750 was released. I really need to get my hands on a few of the Nikon Film Cameras :)
You should make a collection video going through all of your equipment
That's going to be a VERY long video, haha! But I appreciate the suggestion! I might just do that soon. :)
Hi there, thanks for this video! Yesterday, my aunt gave me that camera; it's like new. Can I ask you something? I'm a beginner and I want to get one of the lenses you recommend. Which is the best lens, not just for now but also for when I eventually buy a new camera?
Unfortunately, the 'best lens' just depends on your style of photography. But, as I said in the video, the 18-200 is probably the "best" lens for beginners because of focal length ranges. Whenever you do upgrade to a new camera, feel free to ask again :)
@@BoostLeekdMedia Thank you. Maybe it's a silly question, but is the kit lens I currently have too weak? Do you recommend getting the 18-200mm?"
I have one too. Still using it along with D5500 . It shoots outstanding images. It was my first SLR too.
Nice 👍! Thank you for sharing!
What SD cards do u recommend I know one of your videos mentioned it ,but don’t remember which one it was. Is the max 16gb?
16gb is the max but to be safe, 8gb is what I would go with. 8gb worth of images is A LOT of images to go through. Hope this helps.
Hi,
Just wondering why you deleted my complimentary comment. It was the first one for this video?
Not sure what happened. I usually don't delete comments unless it's extremely unnecessary. I do know youtube deletes comments but I'm not seeing "blocked" comments on my end.
@@BoostLeekdMedia thanks. Yes, I’ve talked to another site this evening that I also got deleted on, and apparently they believe it is TH-cam deleting comments, for what reason they can’t figure out because they were not offensive in any way, rather, as in my case, very complimentary. Social media baffles me sometimes 😡
I just bought one to resell, but my girlfriend wanted to start dabbling in photography so I gave it to her to start with.
Nice! Hope they watched the video. It's still an awesome camera :)
BoostLeekd Media my Nikon D40 maxes out at 32gig cards. which is what i put in my two D40s . I keep mine in the car with a 18-200mm lens . So i always have DSLR available. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Good to know the 32gb card work on this good ol' machine!
Have a D40x sine new, and got a D40 for 35 bucks a while ago, with kit lenses. Also a zoom 10-300 an a few vintage lenses. I think these cameras are as close as you can get to analog photography on a budget. They are great to learn on, you get a bunch of limitations that makes you think about what you are doing, but when you get things right, you will get a very nice result direct from the files. The CCD demands less post processing than CMOS, imo. Strengths, portrait, street and landscape in good weather, weaknesses bad lighting, long lenses, bulky to use in full manual mode. I’m thinking of getting a 35 mm lens for street, the kit lens is surprisingly good, but slow, and I like bokeh.
Thank you for sharing your experiences! I totally agree with you about the CCD and the CMOS post processing. Not much you have to do if you get your settings right on. You got your D40 for an AWESOME deal.
@@BoostLeekdMedia I just ordered a split screen matte, just to make manual focus faster, it’s ‘a breeze’ to swap on the camera. I should make focusing much easier.
Have one and love it!!! Then picked up the D300 and then the D200 =)
Nice!! Both of those are great cameras. Especially that D200 :)
The D40X has a better rear display. I use one with the 18 70 afs DX f3.5 f4.5 lens.
I also have a D40 with a 18 55 VR kit lens.
I did a wedding with the D40 adding a Nikon SB 600 speedlite flash.
I love these CCD sensor cameras.
Nice! My 18-70 is unfortunately locking up when I zoom. Probably something internal but it was such a fun lens to use! Definitely much better than the 18-55 lens. Thanks for sharing!
Nice video Lee, keep bringin classic camera for classic enthusiast
Thanks! Will do. The D80 is next :)
I have the 40x version. A bit more resolution. The kit lens got not much to shout about. Then I was curious on how it will look with a prime lens like a Voigtlander. So I bought the Nokton 55mm F1.2. It knock me off my feet. The image was like a Leica. But it is a pain to manual focus at a smaller aperture. Don't ever move forward or backward even a quarter inch. It certainly need an autofocus lens. I heard that Nikkor has produced 120 million lenses to date. I'm sure I can find some good prime with autofocus.
Nice! Yes, I had the SAME focus issue with a 50mm F/1.2 AIS lens I borrowed. Focusing was a pain. As much as I loved how the image rendered, it was just too much of a hassle to hit 100% focus on a subject without moving too much, as you said.
As for prime lenses, I REALLY love the 50mm 1.8G on my D40 :)
Great video! Do you know which flash or speedlight would be compatible with the D40?
I am using a Nikon SB700 with my D40 :)
I love these videos, my friend, they entertain me a lot
Going to Japan this summer. I was thinking to bring my D40X with me, together with just and only my 35mm1:18g. Will I make it? Quite a bright lens, so I'm quite confident for the night shooting as well...
I actually brought my D40, along with my Sigma 35 F/1.4 ART lens attached to it, during my Tokyo trip in March this year. You will be perfectly fine. The 35mm F/1.8G DX is a fine lens. For super bright days, you can increase the aperture between F/2 and F/2.8 :)
@@BoostLeekdMedia Let's hope so! Thank you!
Have one and takes great pictures with the kit lense even.😊
I hope you can take this out on a photowalk on a better lighting condition. Or maybe at night and do some long exposures. I found one online for 150 dollars with a kit lens in pristine condition. You have convinced me to buy one.
Nice! I'm going to bring it to a local car show during daylight and hopefully during golden hour and at night.
@@BoostLeekdMedia Definitely looking forward for that. I subscribed!
Hello, what lenses did you use for the portrait that you took?
It was the Tamron 45 F/1.8 lens. It is an amaaazing lens on the D40.
@@BoostLeekdMedia thank you!!!
Do u edit the Japon pics after?
Yes, they are edited but not so much as the Tokyo lighting did most of the work :)
@@BoostLeekdMedia what app do u use?
@@ReydelErnestoPerez-ou6fl I am using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to edit my images.
I have Nikon D40 but I don't have lens for my camera
Hope you can get when for not a lot of money. The 18-55 is a very cheap lens and an okay lens to start out with.
@@BoostLeekdMediayeah its cheap but. i have not enough money to buy because I'm just a student. Im from Philippines btw
