Hey, glad you got it sorted! Dakota looks so tough with a black guard!
I have the Jay Mascis Jazzmaster and I absolutely adore the pickups, this model would give me the Gibson sound. Gotta start saving up!!!😊
OK, I love the Off KilterTron. Sending you gear is the smartest move any maker could make. You demo in the style of music I want to hear the most.
Yes! Him and Puisheen, no noodly minor pentatonic sameness. Good stuff.
Mel Waldorf is an American Treasure
Love the mod! The black pickguard looks sweet. When you mentioned you were going to mod this guitar, it inspired me to mod my Squier Jag. I put a P90 in the bridge. I didn't like the original bridge pickup, so I figured what hell, why not? Thanks for the inspiration and the video.
That filtertron type sound is killer through reverb. That hot humbucker setting is great too. Impressive range. Now it’s a Spazzmaster, with the odd mismatched knobs and the black pickguard, i dig it.
Wow this is very innovative design, I've never seen something quite like this before! Very impressive!
I ordered a mod shop jazzmaster in Aztec Gold a few months after yours and it's been perfect/flawless...the only exception was I had the same mismatched trem arm issue you did. I contacted Fender support and they express mailed a replacement to me with in a week, free of charge!
Im pretty excited for your new guitar set up. You're so lucky to have something Mel engineered!
As soon as the new black pickguard came into frame I audibly said “No”.
But now that it’s on it actually looks really cool. The pickup sounds good also. Awesome guitar!
The black and red is so cool. great choice. And that pickup is insanity! Mod it up!!
Great looking Jazz there Ryan, great video!
Reminds me of the JHS guitar with loads of pickup options for pedal demos. I dig it, jazzmaster/jaguar body's are my favorite for comfort.
Mel killed it with this pickup. Would love to see it go far and stick it in a guitar of my own..
Black guard looks killer on this! Did you ever consider putting the rotary where the pickup selector is, and then moving the pickup selector to where the tone control would have been? Feel like that would have worked for me so I still have the volume where I'm used to it. (Though like you I mostly use it as an on/off lol)
Man this pick up is so cool! I need a set!!
Saw your post on reddit. Love the mod!
I like that “filtertron” setting with that overdrive pedal. In fact all except pos 1 sounded amazing,to me, with that pedal
Looks like the AC/DC SG Jazzmaster if Angus was in a surf band.. pretty sweet 😊
This sounds like it'd be amazing for something like one of those Gretsch baritones.
What I would have done is to get a custom Jazzmaster pickguard with a hole for the rotary instead of the rhythm circuit. The volume and tone controls, and the pickup selector would stay in the stock positions. I don’t use the rhythm circuit on a Jazzmaster or Jaguar, but I do use tone and volume controls, especially the tone control. The Jangle setting on the OffKilter’Tron along with the Jazzmaster neck pickup sounds great!
That pickup sounds great. Really made that Jazzmaster a versatile do anything guitar.
That's a cool pickup!
Great video. I have some of those big ass chickenheads too and I just cant find a spot for them! I need this pickup!!! I have a sweet FFJA that could use it!
I have a jazzmaster from a different series that had a similar problem with the rhythm circuit. I had to reflow the solder because it was shorting out. 5 minute fix and it sounds great.
That thing sounds filthy with all that drive; yes please! Waiting for Mel to email me back.
crazy cool pickup. guitar looks sweet
The “before” pickup sound is amazing!
Definitely black pick guard. Cool mod. Not a fan of anything red but it’s a nice guitar. Gonna have to try one.
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
I like Jangle a lot! I think the humbucker needs the tone knob. I would put the rotary switch next to the goggle. I just put 2 switches between toggle and volume yesterday and it not in the way at all.
This is rad. The JM neck pickup’s arguably the better of the two, so adding the versatility makes great sense.
I'm just here for the breakdown portion of the fast forward music. It's a jam.
Good call on swapping the guard, that way should you decide at some point to start drilling holes, you're not doing it on the original guard.
Id’ get one of these and put it in a single pickup config, Jr. style. Should have plenty to work with!
nice variety of tone might do this to my classic vibe jazz master
Really cool pick up and mods! I would personally go with all cream plastics and put the volume back where its supposed to be so I could do swells still and put the switch where the tone was, and for sure keep that red knob.
I’d have to remove wood to pit the switch in the tone position. There’s probably other creative ways to pull it off though.
Hey bro TC just did a full update on the Ampworx Combo Deluxe 65 , it's was a good pedal before now it's stellar. The tone is soooo much better, nite and day difference. It just came out in September 2023 , I bought one because of your video , Thk u . 😁
Interesting! I’ll have to check that out.
Turned out killer...tone is fantastic as a jazzmaster owner...Slambidy Bambidy sir...
Visually it reminds me of the SD P_Rails. Um typically g this before u here the pickup though.
And that red knob is 🔥!
new pickguard totally works. the thought of wiring such a thing up is making my head hurt though. but sounds cool!
It actually wasn’t that hard. I just made it hard by being dumb lol
I once made a 26 single/combos guitar. I used 3 often, 2 occasionally. And one rarely. I had clipped all the combos together w alligators to hear which I wanted. Unfortunately to get them all required the complex switching that gave all the unnecessary ones as well
i like it! looks good to me
I love guitars with jacks on the front like that because I always move them to the side, opening up a spare hole -- usually for some custom varitone-type notch filter, or alternatively, for a bass cut control. Don't overlook the utility of stacked pots when radically expanding guitar circuits.
I changed put a black pickguard on my lake placid blue AV2 Jazzmaster too. Definitely the right move
Want those but can't afford them yet, I would love if actually fishman have similar options for those sounds
I’d have moved the pickup selector to where the tone control was and put the new control where the pickup selector was!
that mod is insane! maybe change the neck pickup cover to match the white of the Mel pickup. Good video.
mel is a genius! he made a pickguard for me 2x6 way switches in/out of phase, series parellel 2 vol 2 tone and a kill switch like 300 tones!!!
Paul, that's one of the coolest guitars I've worked on in a long while!
Use the “chrome guys”! Dunable uses those and my cyclops has them. They look so cool. Reminds me of a 60s Japanese guitar @ 15:55
The "Mangle" sounded to me closer to a Gibson T-Top or a Guild HB-1 than to a PAF, it didn't sounded to me as opaque and muddy as a true PAF, also i liked the Mosrite and Filter'Tron settings, great twangy tones, but with some depth.
The black is an excellent choice! Then again I absolutely have a bias because I think pretty much every Fender looks best with a black pickguard 🤷🏻♂️
Woooooaaaaahhh! Loving the black pickguard! Made the guitar sound loads better, even before you plugged it in with the new pickups. ;-) Seriously, the white pickguard made the guitar look too surfy and wimpy. Now it looks the jazzy AND the rocky roles. But that red knob? What a clash. But to each their own, eh? As for the pickups: sweet!
Rumble is truly the best song ever. Thanks!
its a great chord testing song. big ringing chords, a little lead work here and there. its perfect.
nice! my tuppence, how about black cover on neck pup? red knob has to stay, why not use it with the clear chickenhead? would be fun to totally rewire and include rhythm circuit, both pups need tone control!
I'd probably put the Tone Knob back, install Mel's big Switch where the current Pickup Selector is, and drill a hole in the Pickguard between the Jack and Volume Knob and install the original Pickup Selector there. The new color scheme looks cool.
Looks great, although I would probably find a white bridge pickup to match since the cream looks a little out of place, but that's just me...
Im seriously thinking aboit putting one of these in my bass vi sidejack
Cool pickup. Reminds me of the Seymour Duncan p-rail.
excuse me, P-Rails remind you of Off Kiltertrons. There, I fixed it for you. ;)
Guitar + gear + Rockin' Ryan = righteous tones. That's all the math ya need.
Love your channel Ryan!
That pickup would be sweet in the surfliner deluxe I just picked up… do they make one that would fit in the bridge space?
Ask Mel. I think he can fit them in a few different cover styles
That 'Crush' setting has some serious potential espeically if you like playing with treble boost, Fuzz, or EQ...
Yeah. That’s the doom setting.
I have a Tele w a bridge P Rails. Its on its own 5 way because the grounded rail thru the P 90 series sounds different than the grounded P 90 thru the Rail. On - off - in series , toggle for the 5 way output. A big pole Tele neck p up and a Twisted Tele clone neck p up are both in the neck, now slightly bigger , HB route. Both necks are in phase RWRP so they are HB. They are out of phase w the bridge, so the Big Pole has a ( on-off- on phase reversal ) switch for Bridge parallel and it's reversed at the Bridge series switch too. The Clone has an ( on-off-series thru Big Pole ) toggle..... So 41 single/combos altogether. 19 in phase, 22 out of phase. Its still new and Im trying them out, but there do seem to be way more than the 5 or 6 settings that sound good I got w my 26 combo guitar.
I wonder if you could get red pickup covers and witch hat knob.
This has got to be one of the coolest picups. Only thing I'd do differently is go with 1 in the neck as well.
So 48 different sounds in the guitar then - I like it 🤩
@@asharpbflat7179 exactly!
@@asharpbflat717954. His maths was way off. With twice the pickups you get 6 sounds on the bridge, 12 on the neck due to the rhythm circuit and another 36 with both pickups. 36+12+6=54 but my maths isn't great so I might have overlooked something.
@@UnvisibleINK you got 6 more than me simply because I forgot about the rhythm circuit on the neck
@@asharpbflat7179 apologies if you thought I was talking about your maths. Actually meant 60cycle's. Pretty sure he has 14 options but he counted 24 or something. With just the bridge you get 6, plus another 6 with both pups and 2 more on the neck pup.
Was commenting that the bad maths in the video was probably giving people a bum steer.
But yeah the second pickup really expands the options, big time.
With respect to qc issues from fender, i bought a 60th anniversary jag last year and it showed up with the lead cct switch plate pretty badly aligned with the pg, i got it mainly fixed but it still sits pretty much flush with the surface of the pg instead of being a little recessed like most jags have, im pretty sure the issue is just with the cut of the pg 🤷 i love that guitar tho and i wanna keep it stock but its a battle every day not to go spend way too much on a spitfire guard
Looks fantastic!
Please Ryan, you NEED the off-kilter neck pickup!
Don't eschew the askew!
6 combos from the Bridge. In parallel w Neck gives 6. Neck alone 1. Equals 13. Add 6 if there's series. Add 6 if there's OoP. Add 6 if there's both , having already added the other 12. Equals 31. I've forgotten what the various slide switches do and if they effect 1 or both p ups.
Mel is a genius! 👍👍
Only at 14 min, but I just wanna say I'm also an idiot and did the same mistake yesterday. Woke up today and fixed it.
I think the math for total combinations number is 1 neck solo, 6 possible middle position variations, and 6 possible solo bridge variations, 6+6+1=13, 14 if you count the rhythm circuit as well
Ryan just think what tones you could get if you put a quad rail in the bridge slot and separated all 4 rails with the selector switch.
See long winded comment. Ryan, you might want to do a phase change switch for the neck. I found a lot of really useful out of phase combos w my P Rails , Tele Neck p up guitar. Some kept good bass, or even had the treble toned down. Some had increased treble, but it wasn't thin and squirrelly. Some had cut mids, some had increased mids. But to my suprise , there's 4 or 5 or more that work well for different kinds of playing. No 1/2 OoP cap required.
"The main issues is that i'm an idiot" this is me every time i do soldering stuff
Yessssssss
Mel has built a clear winner of a Swiss army pickup! I should get a set...
I can't really aspire to the full Clamshack, but a single pickup is probably more tone than I can exceed with my repertoire any way, and quite accessible. 👍
SWISS ARMY PICKUP! that’s brilliant.
You should most definitely get a set, but just be aware, OKTs don't come with the cool little tweezers like Swiss Army knives. Don't want to disappoint.
No pressure, but all the cool kids are doing it. :)
@@60CycleHumcast I'm a helper like that.
I need that.
For a while Fender was hiring anyone off the streets to build their guitars, I live next to their corona plant……Also had several friends and family members work there, that I do not let touch my guitars 😂 Last year is when they did the worker overhaul and things look like they’ve gone up.
Only got one question.
Does
It
Drip?
I'm old school.. one pickup.. one volume pot.. one tone pot... and 126 pedals :)
The ultimate humbucker test! 🤣
At 1:08 My god! It is Uncle Stan from Gravity Falls in real life! 😂
My jaguar had a ground issue out of the box as well. Easy enough to fix, but kinda sucked that I had to.
Yeah. Stuff happens, but at certain price points it should t be common. I’m hearing good things about more recent fender QC so hopefully they addressed the underlying issue.
FWIW, I got my start troubleshooting and fixing issues in second hand guitars. Who knows where it might take you - someday Ian-Tone pickups? :)
now THAT:S the Spaghetti Western sound I want!
Personally, I think that the guitar would look better with either black or white knobs and a white cover on the Jazzmaster pickup. A smaller chicken-head knob could be interesting as well. You can't argue with the versatility although any more and I suspect there could be a case of option paralysis.
Very cool pickup and demo. Not at all a fan of the black pickguard tho. It looked so classic mid 60's George Fullerton - Leo Fender with the original white on red. The black on red thing always looks 1980 Fender to me.
Mel is a frickin' genius. I wanna get hammered with that dude.
I also want to heat those pickups in a baritone through a Magnatone Panoramic Tremolo amp.
Dude, party time!!! I'm in the process of building a baritone Clam Shack, so you'll get to hear samples soon! Bwahahahaha!!!
It's funny on the Jazzmaster it seems everyone wants it for the neck pickup, the bridge is always the one to go lol
If @Alemeda make one of these that will fit a p90 guitar i will 100% buy one for my SG. Maybe 2.
I think he can put them in a variety of covers. The p-90 screw mount might be tricky though. You can always ask.
@@60CycleHumcast I've sent an email asking about it. If they can't make it happen I'm still interested in one for my ernie ball cutlass. Either way I want one real bad, they sound amazing. The most versatile pickup I've ever hear a demo of.
The guitar looks cool and the pickup sounds great but I'd be more interested to hear what it sounds like in the neck position! Fun video though!
This is my original off kiltertron demo, with the pickups installed in a Gretsch 5420 th-cam.com/video/eug_z9uqdrE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=4KifRM0lxZI-9Cd6
This is why I don't mod guitars. Mine would be inside out by the time I was done with it.
What was the stock pickup though? It sounds amazing, I wanna put it inside my Jazzmaster. Don't really like any of the sounds of the new pickup.
Can I get these exact pick ups in the UK?
Yes, Mel has shipped to the UK.
A cool pickup on a groovy guitar.
Hello!😊😊
Not a fan of Fiesta or Candy Apple red guitars.
That being said, the black pick guard does make it look nicer
Given your own comments, wire it to leave the volume wide open and use either a small kill switch near the jack or use pedals to kill the sound. Then, replace that volume knob with a tone knob.
With those options you’ll need to upgrade your amp to a Tone King Royalist to exploit them to the utmost.
It seems like it's more than just a little like a Seymour Duncan P-Rail pickup.
So where is your low and high tone control? I would have get ride off the switch selector to have option of using the low and high tone control as well. You don't want to be controlled by a single set tone selector specially if you want a warmer sound for ballads or actual jazz standarts
