  • This tutorial will take you through the entire process of using the Advanced Skeleton "plug-in" for Maya. It is one of the best and most comprehensive auto-riggers I have used, allowing you to rig pretty much anything you want.     The catalyst for me learning to use this auto-rigger script was seeing the results of facial motion capture data taken directly from an iPhone camera applied directly to this system. The results were astonishing. Thanks to your videos I was able to get everything set up and it all WORKS. Thanks so much.

      I don't know for sure. You would need to inquire at the AS facebook page. I'm guessing not however. I have found that even slightly asymmetrical faces tend to encounter issues. It's an impressive, but sensitive system.

    Hello, I have a serious problem when I try to build the face. I get this message that reads // Error: file: C:/Users/Tau I. Robinson/Documents/maya/2017/prefs/scripts/AdvancedSkeleton5.mel line 12439: No object matches name: upperFace_M.

    11:48 after I click say 'Add Outer eyelid' and it states in the status text that outer eyelid has been added it doesn't show the green and yellow thick loop demarcation lines (which is handy as then you know if you got a good eyelid to close). I know the fact that u have to select a loop and two vertices for the 'middle' close point. However would be a nice to have. The small spheres don't appear after I click say on the eyebrow vertices. I think it's something to do with which Nurb Curves are showing AND something to do with the 'Toggle Fit /Adv' button under the 'Build' Face section which doesn't show until you done the first build which maybe broken in which case you have to go to a previous save. Any ideas why the demarcation guides (coloured aint showing ?) I got it to show once after a broken build hitting the 'Toggle Fit/ Advance' button which suddenly appeared after the broken face build stopped.

    Head_M" is not available, you need to "Select Head Joint" Click the "advanced" checkbox in the "Front" section

    Nice tutorial . But I am stuck in one point . Here when i click on outer eyebrow or inner eyebrow after selecting edges , Its does not make exact green line at place of edges .but it makes a green dot at a single point why . Please help me to solve the issue.

    For the inner eye lid I used Xray mode. That seems to work very well.

    I don't know if I missed it in the video, but what can I do if I accidentally misplaced the Eyebrow-Center joint after building the face rig? I did use the rebuild option, but it left out the eyeballs and tongue. I'm trying really hard not to loose my weight painting progress in the process T-T

    Good videos. The body one works for me but unfortunately the face just encounters errors all the time after several attempts I can’t build the face. I just get errors such as “ duplicate name” or “no object matches .....” etc

    The body works fine but when I go to make the facial rig. I followed the steps but when I go to build it only does the eyes. It stops at the eye lids part. It selects half the vertexes of the head and says " selected verticies are not symmetrical. But looked symmetrical to me though. Need help

    To save everyone trouble, using this facial rig is only good for simple models. If you're planning on rigging a complex face i recommend using blend shapes and then making control rigs yourself or download a script

      This is straight up untrue. This plugin provides a simple and intuitive ground work to build upon. if you want blend shapes, add them on top of a proper rig like this. If you can't accomplish what you're aiming for the AS you aren't using it to its full potential.

    hello! thanks so much for uploading these advanced skeleton videos :D both have been very helpful!
    i have a quick question though, that hopefully you might be able to help me with.
    I'm trying to rig a game character that is made up of triangles, and also has eyelids that are not attached to the face mesh :/
    i should also mention that this model only has the top eyelids. not the bottoms. this is why i'm having trouble figuring this out >>
    is there anyway to rig the face, using AS, to include eyelids like that and that do not have the usual edge loops to select?
    i haven't been able to find any useful info online anywhere.
    if you have any ideas for how i might be able to set this up, please let me know! thanks!

      My experience is no. The facial setup in AS is designed for traditional edgeloops (although I imagine triangles would still work...just not quite as well (never tried though). That being said, as you go through the menus if you miss even one selection I have found that the whole system stops working. There would be nothing from preventing you however from selecting a bottom lid that you never use. Might be worth a shot. When I do an AS face setup, I generally takes me a number of passes before I get all the selections just right and get everything up and working. The results are worth it though..especially with the recent updates. One more thing....I don't know how well AS face setup works in a game engine. You should take one of the demo versions from the website and try it before you lose a lot of time trying to rig. Good luck!

    i have tried to use the rigged character of advance skeleton in another computer its not working please help. the rigg to the character was detached . i also hit the publish option at the end & still not working.

      make sure you have the latest version of advanced skeleton. That was happening in a previous (recent) version.

    Hi Josh, quick question, the minute I select the eyeball, the face mesh is destroyed - any idea why? It's a custom character though, I've already deleted history, transformation, no blendshapes, nothing else I could think of. Also restarted the same process twice. Great tutorial anyway, thanks for that

      Actually I've just got similar problem - no idea why, everything should be working fine, I triple checked what I could... :) My 'old' eyeballs are stretched down to the center of the grid :D

      The only time I haven't seen the button available is if you haven't first made the main rig (also with Advanced Skeleton). You unfortunately can't create the facial rig separately.

    if anyone can help me with this, when i paint weight the jaw the way i want and then go thru the other steps till the face rig is finished i try to move the jaw controller to find out the paint weight is wrong and totally over looked what i did , why is this happening and how i can fix it, help

    Question , will this still work fine if I modeled the face with the mouth open?

      Probably not. It is designed to work with the mouth closed. That being said, I would recommend against setting up for a rig with the mouth open in any case and with any auto-rigger. It is easier and you get more believable results with rigging a mouth to open. Rigging a mouth into a closed position (believably) would be a real challenge unless using corrective blend shapes.

    Whenever I do the body,building it with Deform(option 2+3) and do the face, I reach the point where I have to build the face and everytime(I did the whole rig 6 times) it gives me the error:

    Why is this happening? When I use the Deform(option 1+Delta Mush) it doesn't give me any problem, but the body weightpaint is not as good..

      Yasmin...this may be too late, but make sure you do the face build one step at a time instead of just doing the "build it at once button." This should help you isolate where the issue is. Review each one of your setup steps and make sure that you've done all of them. Also make sure that you have all facial parts added. I have found that even if I don't plan to use things like a tongue, the script sometimes crashes if I don't add one. You can always just throw in some generic geometry. I have found that the face script is definitely more finicky than the body script. If you are still stuck, log onto the facebook page for advanced skeleton and message the programmer. He is great about looking through your file and figuring out what you did wrong. I wouldn't count on him being able to do it before your two day deadline though :( That's going to be too fast of a turn-around.

      Hola! Unfortunately no. You must do the whole thing. That being said, you can always go through the steps and create the controls even though you don't use them.

      I believe (but am not 100% sure) that the standard face rig has some blend shapes in it. You can download some finished rigs from the advanced skeleton facebook page and test them in a game engine if that's something you need.

      The model isn't mine. It is from the Advanced Skeleton website. I just made some small modifications. You should check with their site to see what their restrictions are. My guess is that they would be fine with it.

      HJ...sorry for not replying sooner. Been busy. The facial rigging can be admittedly finicky in my experience. Every time I run into an issue, though it has come down to a mistake I have made...improper mesh, clicking on the wrong loops, not setting the initial group nodes correctly. If you are using the file I uploaded here to practice, it should work. The other thing to note is that some parts of the process are very slow and can often appear to have frozen maya. There is no feedback in the toolbar letting you know it is still doing something. If you have an older computer this may be even more of an issue. A couple of the steps can take a good 5 minutes to compute.
      Make sure you are using the step-by-step face setup and not the do it all at once button. That one never works for me and always feels like it's frozen. Last resort if you still can't get it to work is jump on to the ASkeleton facebook page and send your file to the programmer. He is WONDERFUL. He has always gotten back to me in good time and has always discovered what I've done wrong. Great guy.

      When you place the two circle thing in the beginning of the face rig it will take care to select only the face vertex. You can select the whole body mesh as the "face" and it will work.
      But it is better to separate the meshes to begin with. If you want to paint skin weights later you will end up having to scroll over a giant list of influences

      Not at all. It is just sometimes advantageous because the head generally needs more edgeloops than the body in order to get good deformations. Whenever I have an opportunity to separate the head, I do it in part for this reason. It is often easy to do if you have a seam in a shirt or collar with which to hide the transition. The other advantage of the separate head is that if you plan on doing blend shapes, you only have to duplicate a head instead of the entire character. This helps keep your file much smaller while you are working. If you need to do it all as one piece though...no worries. Should still work fine.
