It’s both… there’s a parent/father theme for sure, but he is talking about standing by and watching himself suffer instead of taking action also.🔥🖤🔥🖤

This track is highly metaphorical with many allegorical meanings. It's universally relatable with the lyrics that point towards parents letting down their children and vice versa with kids to parents. However, at the end, we see the older man and it shows a portion of the "Real" tattoo on his forearm. Then we hear, "Nathan."
NF has that exact tattoo. My interpretation is that the older man is NF standing at the waters edge pondering about his past failures in his younger self. We see him standing there not helping younger Nate, because these are memories in his head and he can't literally rewind time and rescue his younger self from anxiety, depression, and the mistakes that made him into the man he is today (older).

NF said in an interview that this song showed him talking to his younger self, apologizing to him like he talked to his 6yr old self in NATE.

It was him literally talking to his old yourself. Nothing to do with his father at all. He’s already said that.

This song is him looking back on his life and realizing how he failed himself by not taking action sooner to fix himself

Let you down went triple platinum he mentioned it in WHY, I remember riding to work in the passenger with my gf and I heard him on the radio and I started crying. The first song I ever heard was this thing called love. I was struggling with EVERY relationship I had. Parents, siblings, friends. Everything. He wasn't very popular, so watching him be in the radio so fast was like a "yes boi get your air time get your voice out there speak to this generation"
everything he says is everything I think but never say and he even mentions that literal line in a song. The relation is out of this world, and every time I feel crippling lonely I remember I'm not because THIS DUDE exists somewhere speaking facts 24/7

You may be the first reactor that figured
the whole 'sins of the father' theme out
on your own... and how these learned
behavior cycles are hard to break without
a lot of grace and inner-battles one goes
through to conquer our fears in order to
start a new generation of children who
get to experience true freedom provided
from a parent that made it through the 'fire'
coming out more refined by it instead of
giving in and just repeating their actions...
    PEACE ;)

    Remember this...
in Intro2 Nate says 'telling all of
my fans to WAKE UP... but feel like I haven't'...
as he depicts himself as the older version of himself
at the end of this video... taking responsibility for his own
actions so he can forgive others... ?
    Whatchoo think... ;)

NF is the old man. Elderly NF is dying or allowing his old self to die which is a core tenet in Christianity. In a way the elderly NF is a father to his old self that still resides in his mind or flesh, it started with him. Nathan has to put to death his old self in order to put on his new self…
    Colossians 3:5-11:
"Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator."
