  • Nobody likes to plant a garden or container garden and find it dug up by cats. Part of learning how to garden consists of learning how to control pests. The best approach to use when gardening is organic pest control methods. In this video, techniques are taught that can be used in container gardens, landscapes and tradtional garden spaces.

    Actually, I have an orange tree that stray cats hang out by. They're under the tree, on the tree, climbing through the tree. They can care less about the scent of oranges....just thought you would like to know.

    Keep your cats indoors according to most every city law!
    They are not suppose to be running loose in the first place.

      If you live in the country like me there is no leash law for cats. My outdoor cats are actually 13 rescues in a registered colony. I work TNR Humane society, should not be so quick to judge!

    Cayenne pepper didn't work on the neighborhood cats here. We even tried sticking plastic forks tines up in the area where they keep digging. But they just worked around them. Chicken wire sounds like a good idea.

      Fleas can actually infect humans with diseases too. No thanks I don’t appreciate other peoples pets doing their business in my garden at all. I don’t know if they have had their shots or been wormed or flea’d etc

    I'm growing spinach and radishes in a growing box, and the cats were after them. I put sticks all around the edge about an inch or 2 apart and the cats think they can't get in anymore. And it's not too annoying, just looks a little crazy.

    I found spraying cats in my garden with glue a very effective deterent... No harm done to the cat, and the owner very quickly learns to keep them inside!

    I stick the handles of plastic forks around the tops of my container plants. The fork tines sticking up keep all pests out!

    Cayen pepper worked for me..a bit cruel I think but I put a lot of work into my garden and scooping their poop isn’t fun either…
    I put netting too as you said. I think that will help too in future if the cat attempts to return.

      @@katyb2793 after a few days pepper didn’t work anymore. I tried chicken wire too but you can’t fertilise plants properly with a chicken wire because you need to rake the soil in.

      @@musk2494 I see thanks for that... I've also heard citrus juice and water, or vinegar and water. I'm a bit dubious about vinegar being safe for my tree.
      I've also been suggested to put my bonsai in a hanging pot. That honestly seems like the best option right now..
      I love cats, but killing my bonsai is seriously threatening that love 😠

    A trick I got from a Lowes hardware employee . Moth balls works like a charm .But feeding them a hollow point is more fun .

    Yes I use a small pump action spray (cost €15) filled with water. Now when they see it they are gone. Spray nozzle can be adjusted from a fine mist to full on line of water that can reach about 15 feet. Don't expect results immediately but after a few days you will see the difference. Cats hate getting wet. Please try. 👍

    Thanks for the tips! The Popsicle sticks surround the plants now. Some extra sand was placed in a discreet location so kitty had her special spot too.

    Orange peel didn’t work for long. Must have to put fresh out all the time. Soon as it started to dry out they came straight back 🤷🏻‍♀️

    The citrus thing is false. I boiled cut up oranges and strained it and sprayed it and even poured it and it did nothing.

    Recently I've had a problem with this ladies cat across the street from me, the damm thing would come over in my yard to shit. But that probably has been taking care of, you see I have this one hundred and twenty pound German Shepherd that got a hold of it, by time he got done with it there wasn't enough of it to bury ,he was awarded with a nice doggie treat. No more kitty cat problems taking a dumb in my yard .The lady that owned the cat came over asking if I had seen her cat and I said no then after she walked away me and my German Shepherd looked at each other and started laughing.

    Growing tomatoes potatoes onions and peppers out on my deck! My cat loves the deck! I put everything in a 25 sq ft space behind chicken wire! My cat always wants 2 destroy plants! Now I just found out every dang thing I'm getting ready to plant is poisonous 2 my cat!? "Any suggestions would be very helpful!" I can't keep an eye on him all day!..Thank you!

    Cats should require similar law like leash laws period. Trap and ship them off if their owners will not be accountable for their whereabouts. Simple fix, and if trapped and taken to pound they should have to pay a fine and a fee to get their cat back just like how your car can be towed at your expense if in a zone your not allowed to be in period. Cats are terrible and kill tons of birds are a nuisance in a neighborhood environment where they don't belong.

      keep you cat indoors. if it's chewing up your garden, chances are, it's messing with your neighbors' gardens, too! if it is in your neighbor's gardens, then that makes YOU a bad neighbor!

    The only useful ideas in this video are chicken wire (excellent laid down over newly seeded beds,it eliminates cat problems) and sticks placed densely over seeded areas (only practical for plants that are widely spaced like squash or cabbage; requires too many sticks to be effective over large areas for dense plantings like carrots, beets, greens etc). The rest of this video is useless filler that is wasting everyone's time.

      Frost Huldra Farm cats and dogs are fine and the main thing being that they tend to stay on their owner's property and are not a nuisance to neighbors. Cats and dogs will be what they are and I like both. It's irresponsible owners that are the root problem.

      When you say coffee do you mean coffee grounds because I'm buying chicken wire this week I'm going to try that and I'm using a cat repellent and if you're talking coffee grounds I will use that too I've had it my blood pressure goes up every time I see these four-legged little brats I'm tired of cleaning up the neighbor's mess they've taken over my front yard I don't have a lot of plans I want to keep it simple and my soil is very dry and loose and they like it but I'm going to fix them

      I tried that and it did not work. I tried chilli flakes, orange peel, orange scent, soaking wet soil...nothing worked. So I went to the dollar store an bough bbq skewers. I put them all over my garden and thought if that stupid thing comes he will poke his bare ass. It worked. But let me tell you, I can’t go in my garden myself before removing the sticks, but don’t care it’s better that cleaning that disgusting shit on the soil I grow my tomatoes.
      I spend like 20 dollars. Just sharing my idea.

    Orange pills don't work for me, I also tried red pepper flakes,in conclusion everything you suggest is not working for me. It not mycat why should I spend money to buy chicken wire. I'm getting a sonic cat deterrent I let you know if it works.😷

    Dude... DON'T use curry powder/cayenne etc!!
    For one thing, lots of curry powders have onion and/or garlic powder --both lethal to cats even in tiny quantities.
    For another, powders like this get on cat's paws and then, while grooming, into their eyes. Cats have been known to literally claw out their own eyes to try and get rid of the pain of cayenne/curry powder in their eyes.
