Great video and I'm sorry you had trouble with your laptop! I think the thing about Mario was that up until then you had 2 types of platform games. Ones that require pixel perfect jumping. (Not knocking it, they have their own charm ) and others where your character felt skiddy. Mario for the first time you fully felt in control of him. I mean there's a million other reasons why mario was so good but they really nailed the controls from the start making it.

Harking back to the good old days when there was innovation, originality and games that gave you a chance to play them for hours on 1 credit. Last time I was in an arcade every game had a gun of some sort attached to it or was a racing game. Great video with a little something for everyone. I think you have covered most of the bases and barring people personal favourites there is not much to argue about. I would have had Defender and Robotron 2084 from the arcades, Paradroid and Wizball from the 8 bits. Granada X and PGA Tour Golf on the 16 bit consoles. Speedball and Populous II from the 16 bit computers.

Double Dragon is a lot of memories for me, and I sort of have mixed feelings about it. In the mid-nineties I used to go to a public swimming pool that had 2 arcade games, (original) Mario Bros. and Double Dragon, and I played them a lot and got really good at both games. Eventually, I discovered that all you have to do in DD is move to a different vertical plane than your enemies, turn around and throw an elbow with P+J, rinse and repeat until it's over. I think maybe it is the only arcade game I have ever 1CC'd. I have a lot of nostalgia for it, but I also wonder if the gameplay can really be considered "good" if a game has an easily accessible exploit that turns it into a cakewalk.

Please help. I'm looking for a game I played years ago... It's a simulation game where you play as a wooden sail ship captain (I think exploring the Americas) where you choose your crew. The view is inside the ship and you can go from room to room to talk to different crew members. The cook tells you how much food and water, on deck the bosun or first mate tells you ship condition, water depth, sea state etc.. The quartermaster tells you about crew morale... You can choose when to anchor and go ashore to trade with locals (if there are any), or hunt for food and collect water. I can't remember the system it was on or the name but I remember being completely addicted

@@oldstylegaming Thanks for the fast reply. Wow it's really similar to the DOS game Exploration: Voyages of Discovery but didn't have the view of the world from above.. I almost got really excited! I played it on a J-tagged Xbox360 with DOS, Amiga, SNES, and a few other emulators that I can't remember. I hope this helps, but the game you mentioned looks really fun aswell, I'll attempt to give it a playthrough. Thanks again, you got a new subscriber for life!

A nice list but a very weird one.
    A) it's only console games while the 90's were the heyday of PC gaming, te title should acknowledge this, leading to
    B) it's only platformers, shumps, fighting games and shooters, with the occasional RPG. Very narrow genre mix, 99% action games.
Call it "My personal favourite home computer/console games ever", fine. But the title as it is is terribly misleading, leaving quite a number of actual best games ever completely out of the picture.
I was quite disappointed after watching.

Do you remember side arms that was a great arcade shoot em up and then there was terra cresta amazing games.
I tried to recreate side arms on the Amiga using Amos B.A.S.I.C could never get it to run smooth enough using BOBs and always had problems when trying to use sprites.

Talk about history being Nintendo-washed! I thought you'd focus more on Europe, especially after seeing Elite there. Some of these games were not even played outside North America or even the US.
