You are a JOY to watch. Really. You like "the grind" of it, AS DO I (re: potting up onions segment). Every "repetitive" task is always so different from the last time, I never get tired of it either. It does take me a while to watch your videos, as I'm so encouraged by what you're doing, I always pause and tend to a task here that needs doing. EVERY TIME lol
Will you be doing a sit down chat with your mum about the tomato varieties again ? Over a glass of wine perhaps ? Think you should do some wine tasting with her to along with the Tom tasting 😊
The big rake is a subsoiler rake for leveling ground and making a tilth, wich is why the tines are hooked , its not for smashing on the soil, you push and pull the rake to make a lovely surface and under soil. and uproot any weed's. they are a very good tool too have.
We get the same root problems under our leaf mould bins from a large beech tree above….have to console ourselves with how beautiful the beech is…and how we are helping it!😱😀
Love your little woodland area of bulbs! ❤ Rats! The lady across the street as spent 2 years trying to clean up her property for selling and 5 dumpsters later the rats found our barn/gardens and are NOT going to ruin my harvests in 2024! The fox and predator birds come around to check out our chickens/ducks and hopefully are going to help rid us of rats, because traps don’t seem to work as well as we hoped (poison is out of the question). Thank you for bringing us along on this journey!
I remember when you built that poly tunnel and then some low life made slits in the back panel! I was so upset for you and your mom. Excited with the changes/improvements.
Morning ladies, I can relate to the rat damage, I had amazing cabbages and PSB in the poly tunnel and a rat moved in and literally ate every one of them 😢😢. I keep thinking how can you work with hair in your face I have to put mine in a ponytail or it drives me crazy 😜. Rats will eat plastic and use as bedding and be careful with the soil and rat feces. I would have to move the poly to the other side of the plot directly across but I get that’s a huge job 😜. I ramble sorry, have an amazing week ladies, Ali 🌧️🇨🇦
Jess. Rats ugh. We had them get in under our house the builder didn’t put a sealing wall as under the house! Yes needless to say the rats climbed up the no batts and under the downstairs ceiling. I’m still waiting on the builder to come and cover those walls replacing the wall batts at the same time. My thought was I had decided to Make compost in that area of garden I think initially they housed themselves in it. They removed it and they moved under the house. This area is as big as a rooms just the rock base not dug out. After baiting traps by the pest man under the house and around the garden for two years we think success. I’ve blocked the bottom of the door but as you found rats get in anywhere. Do you think the chooks are bringing them in. They rats terrify me. Please Jess put gloves on when dealing with the soil etc in the polytunnel. Love the extension of the woodland garden. Nearly forgot with those blasted tree roots never ending go for high raised beds when you can afford to that will overcome the problem and be good for mum to work with too. Putting weed mat under mind. Maybe Birdies could sponsor you a new or two of the deep ones?????
Yeah, rats and tree roots. If Lil could get in I’m sure she’d taken care of it. We have a massive tree next to our house. The ground around the trunk actually is a walking hazard cause the roots are massive. Had a compost pile under it and the roots sprung into it and was sucking all the nutrients out. Lesson learned. I’d wear a mask if you are removing any rat soil. Yeah, I’m amazed we are getting more sunlight and spring is a month away!😮
Such a lot of work. I think I would have moved it. We have so much work this year...a shed that collapsed and needs a new build, a greenhouse that needs re-roofing, a polytunnel frame that needs a new cover, several raised beds that need to be re-made....phew!!!
Oh the rat damage is heartbreaking 💔. That poly tunnel has done so good for you! I was once tearing out a shed for a client and a single step landed me up to my thigh in rat tunnels underground! Two fellow workers dragged me out in seconds but rats are just infuriating!
Oof, so bittersweet undoing the work of your tunnel. I know the feeling well, I couldn't believe it when you pulled up those tree roots though 🤯. So excited for you to have it revamped and upgraded, Although I am sad that you're well ahead of my greenhouse rebuild... I think you're going to win that race. I did enjoy being smug for those brief few weeks! Great reminder that I need to actually do something with my onions too though. Lovely video Jessie.
Your relationship makes me cry it’s so sweet and wonderful. Having ramen lunch together with some of your greens was probably the best meal I’ve seen in a long while.❤❤
I so look forward to your videos every week. I retired in December of last year and I LOVE losing track of time, but when I see your video in my feed I know it's Tuesday:) I enjoy your relationship with your Mom. My Mom and I do projects and things together so I know the value in that time together. She's not well, so we're making the most of every chance we get. One thing I LOVED about this video, strangely, was seeing that you both had to wipe your chins when eating your noodles! hahaha I get the same brand here, LOVE'EM, and I cannot seem to avoid the slurp!! Keep doing what you're doing! We'll be here learning and going along for the journey.
Thanks - Enjoy your vlogs and wait each week to see what’s to do this is my second year with an allotment and I’ve expanded so will be busy this year :) x
they done that in my greenhouse and tunneled many feet under the garden and came up under the compost heap.i put used cat litter down there holes and didn't see them again (just the wet bit)
Just love your chickens they are so cute… when I clicked on this video I didn’t think I’d be listening about rat poo… perhaps no a breakfast video lol 😅😅
I'm not normally a cat lover, but lil is beautiful ... the woodland area is going to look fantastic and being so much bigger will definitely be worth it have you thought about a dianth
Hope you manage to keep those rats under control, I have just found a monster hole leading from the bottom of one of my compost heaps to the top. Uggh. Take care Xx
Jess..I adore “Shin” ramen!! You can dress it up in so many ways whether it’s cavalo nero or calabrese. Warms you up after working outside when it’s cold. Rats will always be a challenge, keeping a positive attitude is the best defense. Looked like you were playing “twister” when you dug out the roots from the hi tunnel. You can still keep the bottoms open in the greenhouse beds if you’re able to line the bottoms with wire mesh? Shitty job but it will keep the ratties at bay!! Cheers !
Hi Jessie and your Mum, my polytunnel is lined with thick green weed suppresant as we have clay soil, which is awful. I have 2 pallett collars on each side and filled with organice matter then compost. Top up in spring with fresh compost. Although, I've had it for 2 years now & desperately need to clean it this season. Goid job on taking down all your coveting on your polytunnel & thise god damn rats! Tgats the problem with teesside, huge toots! I am looking forward to seeing your polytunnel completed. Lovely tour of Que Gardens. I only do two beds for onions but grew some spare ones in pots, too. I've watched JBs video, and yes, it was really good. I trim my onions, too. It works really well. You won't regret growing onions from seed. They are so much stronger & resilient plants. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
I'm not normally a cat lover, but lil is beautiful ... the woodland area is going to look fantastic and being so much bigger will definitely be worth it. you thought about a dicentra ? They are really pretty.
Oh my where to start, can't wait to see the new flower bed love how you can pop the bricks out and do a quick redesign, ( I've bought more bulbs and flowers) not going to lie I felt that first cut into the Polly but having now seen the damage it just has to be done and you can repurpose the plastic, fab vlog Jessie/mum 🥰
plot neighbour is having problem with rats someone told her to use ferret bedding so far so good even left food out to temp rats they have not eaten it or been seen your rain has been up here in the north west got to plot this afternoon 10min later lashin it down 😭at least i managed to get my first lot of seeds done sweet pea broad beans leeks and some rocket great video
Hi Jessie. It's a shame that I didn't know of your recent trip to Kemble as I live not far from there and could have met you and taken you to see the source of the River Thames which is quite close by. I'm glad that you enjoyed your trip though.
I remember when you put that tunnel up and the next time you went the holes😭let’s hope you build it even better you are such a clever girl. Think you might take after your dad?🙋🏻♀️
I will be watching with interest your rat solution. I also have a rat problem along with other problem critters. I've been working on a plan for a poly tunnel at the bottom of my veg garden but was considering the logic of digging down a foot or so below the soil height around the outside perimeter and filling the void with crushed sharp stones about 6 inches deep, and topping that with two layers of builders blocks and filling the brick voids with more of the sharp crushed stone. Rats and other vermin don't seem to like digging through sharp crushed stones. May also put a layer of strong building membrane below the whole floor of the tunnel. That stuff is generally engineered for vermin problems. Then building the beds themselves deep enough for the roots to be happy above the membrane and rocks. That would be easier on my aging back anyway. Hmmmm... May even keep the critters out.
Sad news all my grow along onions died - damping off I believe. Hope I’m not too late for a re sow. 5 out 12 chillies sown are up without lights or added heat except for when radiator kicked in at 18/19C. Is it time for mum to get some deaf aids , I had to get some.
We had a Cairn Terrier, had to stop bringing her up to the allotment. It felt that every time she came along she would present a half dead rat she had caught at my feet. Having to despatch a poor rat before she devoured it was not very agreeable. Once she caught three one summer eve. That was it. Not sure what you can do about them. I do put traps in my greenhouse if I see evidence of rat incursions, but I only ever seem to catch the delightful little field mice.
I bet removing the polytunnel plastic was like removing a plaster! Hopefully, once it has been all done, it should keep them out. Pesky buggers! Lil must be too well fed to be a rat handler. I literally held my breathe when you walked away from those cress seeds on the wobbly table! I potted up the onions, spring onions and leeks but they all look a bit sad. I might snip them a bit like you have to see if they perk up a bit. We finished converting the sandpit and now working on extending the garden border. On clearing out stuff, we managed to find a mish mash of concrete borders to replace the rotted wooden ones. Is Kew gardens still free to walk around?
Lots of hard work going on down the plot Jessie but it’ll so be worth it. You are so lucky that Kew is in your local area lol. I keep telling my mum in law we will take a trip. When dyu reckon is the best time go?
It gives one hope if Kew don't have such a good display of veg think you need to get a job there and teach them how it's done 😊😅😅😂😂😂😂❤ if you can get hold of them cheap enough try using paving slabs vertically around the outside of the geen house poly tunnel itll be deep enough to keep rats out and hopefully tree roots
Hi Jess, went to B&Q the other day found some hell Ables for £9 one was called pirouette and I forgotten what the other one was cool but the pirouette one was lovely x🤙🏻
Hi Jess, I watch your videos every week and love them. However, I have a phobia about rats and I was concerned when you started digging around in the soil. Weils Disease is so dangerous, please take care.
Hey Jess quick question. Do you rotate your crops? My dad was a farmer and he said you should always move your crops each year as they deplete the soil from nutrients they need to thrive yearly, especially tomatoes. I kinda move mine every other year. This year is the year I’m moving and I did notice last year as the 2nd year with my maters in the same spot my production was way lower than the first year. Even with adding in nutrients to the soil. Just curious if you practice this as well?
I’m having big issues with rats round and in my big hot composter. The hot compost company guy I spoke to about how to mend my bin advised growing loads of mint or lavender round it as rats hate them. No idea if it works but I am trying it!
Hi Jess, I bought some anemone corns (with my spring bulbs) but no idea when to plant them. Is it time now? I must remember to get them in the ground. Thanks Jane
Hello Gorgx feeling great that the new season is getting underway now,i been digging on allotment 8am and be soon sowing seeds, what cosmos do you grow? also what seeds do you save?? XX Paul from dronfield
We have really good weather forecasting in the northwest US. I wonder if your issues lie in that you are surrounded by water. Your weather is not boring for sure.
Hello Jessie, Grrrrrrr I hate rats, rats, rats........... We live so close to farm fields so we see a mouse or two every winter BUT the cats zero in on them and we never see them again. I love that Ramen!!! However I never share any of it!! lol Cya next week!!!
nasty rats ive had some or something eat my tulips out of a pot right by my back door which kinda creeped me out lol plus gardners kate and eli will be shouting at the screen for how you say ailsa craig lol
Oh Jess! You should be wearing gloves when working in ratty areas ! They carry all sorts of diseases 🐀🐁🐀🐁. Sending love and blessings to you and Mum xx
Are you sure that plastic will prevent tree roots invasion? Be a shame to go to all that work and have tree roots in the bed next year anyway. Another YTer below suggests patio blocks. Good luck!
Rather you than me digging for rats I don’t like them at all. I don’t like the thought of killing them but I don’t like them anywhere near me. They can attack you aswell. Few years ago my dog chased a rat that came out from under the shed and it stopped turned around and bit the dog on the nose. They don’t like to be trapped or cornered so please be careful. Spring flowers looking beautiful.sorry compost research I find bit boring. We are fortunate not to have had problems so we just get on with. It. I sowed my onions 10 days ago and they were on the windowsill and now they are outside on a bench with plastic clear food containers over them but they need pricking out already. We have had warm temperatures but not 16 about 12-13 degrees. I have only just sown aubergines peppers and chillies and some celery. I never have much luck with any of those so here’s hoping it will be this year I do😆👍🥂cheers
so sad and aggravating--etc--we use rat zappers---electrocutes them--no poison to harm owls etc---FYI--I'm happy to share our garden somewhat--but not much--take care--(Kansas)
I watch someone who gardens in newyork. A neighbor lets her garden on their lot.The rats start digging tunnels in the garden. They have a dumpster behind the house because apartments surround that area. Its a hot mess ! I can't stand RATS!!!!! Unfortunately, my neighborhood has a problem because of lazy people with trash .Ugh ! It's a battle to keep them OUTSIDE and not in my house.
It’s so great to see the girlies out and about!
You are a JOY to watch. Really. You like "the grind" of it, AS DO I (re: potting up onions segment). Every "repetitive" task is always so different from the last time, I never get tired of it either. Oh gosh it was painful watching you tear off the polytunnel. I watched you build it ❤❤❤

loving the vlog as usual - enjoying you humming the 'great british menu' theme too - can I assume you are watching it? 😂

Japanese Anemone is the bane of my life. Lovely later in the summer, but they spread like mad. You'll have to be on top of them to keep them in check.
I stopped buying off of amazon several years ago. Products were rubish. I did watch JBs video💥
What a great use of space! A place for flowers is so special in a garden. Love seeing the blooms you share! Thank you!

Inspired by the wooded tree area. That's still a bit of a blank canvas at my plot
Gotta multisow those onions Jess, they come out just as big if you've 3 in a module/clump :) Unless ofc you just want a few really huge ones :)
I had the same issue with roots! We tried making the raised beds much taller and added cardboard and weed fabric at the base. We hope it works!
My first comment on your great show
I have some fine netting on the bottom of my small poly tunnel it helps with the air flow
I will be watching with interest your rat solution. I also have a rat problem along with other problem critters. I've been working on a plan for a poly tunnel at the bottom of my veg garden but was considering the logic of digging down a foot or so below the soil height around the outside perimeter and filling the void with crushed sharp stones about 6 inches deep, and topping that with two layers of builders blocks and filling the brick voids with more of the sharp crushed stone. i loved last week all about the compost hope you sort your rats out jess another cracking video

Do grow Claytonia really soon Jessie, it's wonderful for salads.

We just removed the old metal pins, etc and dumped the rotted wood into the gap to help fill the new gap. Do you reckon that double rake thing could handle 2 inches of clay soil?
Is Kew gardens still free to walk around?
Containerwise has started selling on Amazon!
Lots of hard work going on down the plot Jessie but it’ll so be worth it. You are so lucky that Kew is in your local area lol. I keep telling my mum in law we will take a trip. When dyu reckon is the best time go?

Hi Jess, went to B&Q the other day found some hell Ables for £9 one was called pirouette and I forgotten what the other one was cool but the pirouette one was lovely x🤙🏻
I plant my garlic around the ends of my beds .Will not have to move them.
Early flowers in shady bed cyclamen coum also iris reticulata is spectacular at the moment.
Hi Jess, I watch your videos every week and love them. However, I have a phobia about rats and I was concerned when you started digging around in the soil. Weils Disease is so dangerous, please take care.
Jessie I have a climbing hydrangea x 9 years. Failure to thrive… it’s never really taken off. Do you have any tips? Thank you.
Your new rake is a fearsome beast and made light work of your new patch but what is it called please?
I think they are called harrow rakes .
We had a problem ike that with tree roots in our garden.
Good
Would a paved floor be better against the tree roots? Might be able to score some from Marketplace.
Lilly says,"we don't needs them veg Jessie, get them chickens on the bbq please".
I read that if you cut tops off it makes more leaves. I am trying it,, so far they look thicker in the trays.that

Hi Jessie, as you have the Poly already dismantled- just a thought can you move it? Maybe?
Hi Jess, I bought some anemone corns (with my spring bulbs) but no idea when to plant them. Is it time now? I must remember to get them in the ground.
Thanks Jane
I usually 0ut 3 or4 onion seedlings in a pot, I think they like company? 🙂

Hello Jessie, Grrrrrrr I hate rats, rats, rats........... We live so close to farm fields so we see a mouse or two every winter BUT the cats zero in on them and we never see them again. I love that Ramen!!! However I never share any of it!! lol Cya next week!!!
I’ve never seen rat zappers
why not flat it and use auto pots etc would be easier
Just looked up Epimedium and noticed another common name for them is Horny Goat Weed. Which makes Barren Wort seem better as a name I think.
nasty rats ive had some or something eat my tulips out of a pot right by my back door which kinda creeped me out lol plus gardners kate and eli will be shouting at the screen for how you say ailsa craig lol
👍
Oh Jess! You should be wearing gloves when working in ratty areas ! They carry all sorts of diseases 🐀🐁🐀🐁. Sending love and blessings to you and Mum xx
Yes I agree gloves.. 😊
If you know anyone with Ferrets than ask them for their poo as Rats hate the smell.
You definitely need a better cat on the plot.
