I think you're the only person I've seen (including me!) who realised that the key to keeping everyone alive when you go off to fight the Human-Reaper, is to leave a strong team behind to hold the door. On harder difficulties especially, that can mean taking at least one "squishy" squad mate with you (which makes your own final fight that much harder), but it does also mean that the team holding the door will be stronger because of it. It's not really explained anywhere in-game, but that is exactly the way the BW devs recommend you approach it. Take a bow!

@@YebbaDebba It is a pretty complex bit of math that the game uses. The companions each have a rating, with certain ones having more weight in the calculation on how many survive and who. Garrus and Grunt, and probably Zaeed, carry a great deal of weight in the final battle. If you bring more than one of them with you, the defensive group suffers, with the weakest being the first casualties, usually Mordin or Tali, assuming all of the loyalty missions were done. "Weakest" isn't a great term, really, but it's basically used to mean "least combat-y."
@@chrisd7047 yeah salarians are squishy, same for quarians and their weakened immune systems. So it does make sense they're the first ones to go

Woo hoo! You survived the Suicide Mission. No one left behind. You even got the crew back. I'm surprised you weren't freaking out more when the decisions needed to be made assigning squad mates to different tasks during the final mission. That part can be gut-wrenching the first time. If you ever replay with a new character, Thane's romance story arc in the series is worth exploring. It's among my favourites - sad, but unique. Congratulations on your triumph. It's possible to lose multiple squad mates, along with Chakwas and the crew. I can't wait to see you get into ME3 and bring the epic story to its conclusion.
I do love a good sad boi story, to be completely transparent - there's so much I want to explore on another playthrough!! And thank you - it was VERY nerve wracking and some of the hmming and hawing was cut out. I definitely felt confident but not wholly in my decisions - my butt and stomach were CLENCHED the whole time!! I had no idea you could lose the crew too - ack that's terrifying!!!

There is still so much more to learn about Legion and the Geth. My opinion on his "no data available" comment is that he reveres Sheppard, but as he is just an AI, he still doesn't quite understand what that means.
I have watched many people play these games, and this is far and away the best break down of the final squad decision, especially considering you didn't know on the fly what the potential consequences of making a "wrong" choice would be. Very well done. Congrats

That "releasing control" line kinda breaks my heart. The Collectors were just Protheans working against their will for the Reapers. When Harbinger released control, they woke up. They died as Protheans. No way around it but it's sad for them. This has been super fun and I'm glad I found your channel. Subbing and looking forward to more. Thanks for sharing.

Shepard is referring to the Normandy crew who sacrificed themselves during the Collector ambush, protecting Joker as he regained control of the ship. The line goes by fast and isn't well explained, and in context where you're worried about the immediate threat to your squad it's confusing, but that's what Shepard means when she says that.
Great playthrough. Loved your rationalizing on picking the different specialists, especially your realization about the defensive team at the very end.

The reaction of streamers to finding out that "Suicide Mission" isn't a meme or some cute nickname but the canon name of the mission will NEVER get old.

Also, do the DLC before you move on to ME3. Trust me on that.
They just really said - BE PREPARED!! And I still get teary thinking about it with Joker and his interactions with EDI afterwards. That was so, so, so good!
I lost Thane, and grunt on my first playthrough when the game first came out, and I didn’t play the trilogy again until 10 years later because of the heartbreak. So cool to see you made all the right decisions on your first go! Can’t wait to see the DLC and ME3!

Sooo happy for you that you pulled it off so well and instinctively thought about your team first and took the "rearguard has to be strong" approach. Been gaming 37 years and this is my favorite game on the Citadel, the computer too. Alongside other greats such as fallout 2, jagged alliance 2, xcom 2, wing commander 3, sim city 4, dragon age origins, stellaris and baldurs gate 2. Thanks for the memories. Jagged Alliance 2 - Deidranna Cutscenes, is also worth a watch for a laugh down the memory lane of gaming history.
Legion is the most thoughtful character in the series. He was created and sent forth to find Shepard. The only mobile platform beyond the Veil. He searched the galaxy and learned more and more about Shepard. He grew to admire her. When he discovered that she was "dead", he no longer had a purpose to live for. No reason to live. "There was a hole" both literally and figuratively. He took the piece of Shepard's armor to fix the literal hole and as a memento to fill the figurative hole in his existence. He doesn't understand this feeling of emptiness. He's embarrassed by that. That's why he couldn't make eye contact with Shepard when asked about it and replied "No data available"... Because he doesn't know. A very "human" reply.
Legion was a really, really cool character to introduce and they have I think one of my favorite entrances to date! What a really cool swerve after you've done a ton of missions against the Heretical Geth!

Just stumbled upon your channel and this playthrough and binged through all the videos. I had a blast, thanks for recording it! :) And congrats on making it through the suicide mission with everyone alive! It's definitely not something a lot of people manage on their first go, especially the last part of a rearguard is quite vague on the mechanics.
It's also possible to lose a lot more than 5 people during the Suicide Mission, you can lose everyone, including Shepard!
- Every missing upgrade (shield, armor, guns) will get a squad member killed before you even crash on the Collector Base.
- Choosing an unsuitable/disloyal Tech Specialist and/or Fire Team Specialist will get your Tech Specialist killed.
- If you did one (or a few?) missions after your crew was abducted before going through the Omega 4 Relay, half the crew will be dead.
- If you do even more missions, all of the crew will be dead.
- If you choose an unsuitable/disloyal Biotic Specialist for the shield, one of your chosen squad for that part will die.
- If the Distraction Fire Team Leader is unsuitable/disloyal, they will die.
- If you decide to not send an escort with your crew, the crew will die.
- If you send a disloyal squad member as escort, the crew survives, the squad member dies.
- Any disloyal squad member you take to the final boss fight will die.
Concerning the rearguard (cue Kirrahe's "Hold The Line!" :D ), your reasoning for leaving a strong squad is great, because they are tiered for sturdiness and are all tallied up for an average score. The amount of surviving squad members for the rearguard matter, alongside a sturdiness rating per squad member to make up the average score. Every squad member that is loyal has a higher score comparing to their disloyal counterpart. If the average score is above a certain threshold, like in your case, they all live. If the average score is below a certain threshold, a varying amount of squad members can die the lower the average score gets. First you'll lose disloyal squad members, then from least to most sturdy. Which squad member you have sent as an escort earlier would also matter here, because if you'd have sent a sturdy character like Grunt as escort, he wouldn't be around to up the average score for the rearguard. Your chosen escort, Mordin, is far less sturdy and would have lowered that average score and thus he makes an excellent choice as escort. For lore reasons, I've also always chosen Mordin as escort to help the crew with any potential health complications so I loved your reasoning there as well haha
Lastly, if you would have had one or zero surviving squad members after all of this, Shepard would also not survive. EDI and Joker would be the only survivors and Joker would get the debrief with TIM (The Illusive Man). You'll get the reaper fleet at the edge of the galaxy cutscene and the rolling credits, but won't be able to make a save to import to ME3.

Amazing job! Your knowledge of the characters really helped you make the best choices and yeah, no deaths in the final mission on your first run! Wooo! Because (I have to correct Johnny here, sorry) it is possible for EVERYONE - including Shepard - to die in that. Granted, that would only happen with the worst choices, no upgrades and no loyalty, but still.

You did great! I couldn't keep everyone alive on my first playthrough. This is an excellent game although that is mostly due to writing. Gameplay is definitely a product of its time(Gears of War etc.) and it was never really my cup of tea but the cool and complex characters and their stories is what keeps making me replay the game and the series as a whole.
I absolutely agree on why I didn't play it years ago and instead played it now for those reasons! I'm so glad I did - thank you for watching and joining the journey!!
You don't know how close you came to killing the crew! Getting the IFF device starts an invisible countdown timer. If you don't rescue the crew soon enough... well, it's not pretty.

First time I played the Suicide Mission, my male Shep was romancing Tali, and I chose to send her into the vents. I genuinely believed she was the right choice for the job, but man that last look at her as we jumped off the Normandy made me feel like it was the last time I'd ever see her. Needless to say, I was motivated to fight like hell to bring down the vent barriers in her way.,
We protect the quarian cutie, at all costs!!! 🫡🫡

Oh, Shep's with Grunt and Jack? I'm naming that team "The Best Defense". The timing of this first walk is so good. Tight and pressing, but not too terribly bad. The combat and Legion's passage through the tunnel is well calibrated.

Kept up with your talks with Jack, in particular. She's my personal favorite romance in the game. *The most emotionally rewarding one for me by far and she has a fantastic character arc,* especially if romanced, culminating in the ME3 Citadel DLC (that should be played towards the end of the game, just before the Point of no Return).
For that, I can't imagine Mass Effect without mods.
I love her as a romance for FemShep even more than MaleShep (with the More Gay Romances PC mod). *Especially since she was written to be pansexual, originally, making her a romance option for both protagonists.*

The whole "Thane, I want you" thing is practically a meme at this point. It was brought up at cons and in interviews ad nauseam, especially to Patrick Weekes (head writer for BioWare's Dragon Age series, started as a junior writer with ME1 and was lead writer by ME3). It is such blunt wording to start a romance with Thane, and it shows up so abruptly, that it seared itself into players' memories and they felt compelled to ask about it. TL;DR, after getting a ton of feedback from ME1 about sneaky romances, Patrick... hilariously overcorrected on this one.

A lethal suicide mission can be devastating, and as you were told, you can permanently lose crew. Shortly after the original game release there was a video someone made edited to show Tali in every possible death. Gut wrenching. Congrats on some great, well thought out role choices in your playthrough. I've seen some lets-players really miss the basis for the decisions and pick some really inappropriate people for key jobs
Oh my god, I would have cried so hard if I let Tali die! Especially after her loyalty missions and getting an inkling of where her and the Quarians story is headed in the next game. Thank you so much!! I became very invested and had to think through it appropriately - appreciate the encouragement!!

You completely failed the suicide mission!?! Nobody died?! : ) Love the part where you get to play joker, really sets the tone of that last part when the ship is just empty afterwards. Did good on that reaper fight also, hate that fight, he's moving around so fast, it's hard to hit even with mouse and keyboard. PS! Consider butt held on to for ME3!
