i feel obligated to at least give bemused validation to this undertaking you committed to, review is basically what I expected but I'm really glad you liked all the parts that I was lowkey disappointed by at least. happy u are still on board with what I'm doing!!

      Hey, I have a question,
I can’t find you on Spotify anywhere,
Is this on purpose? I could understand not wanting your music on there on account of the low compensation.

I am one of the insane people who listened to the entire series in a single day. I spent the morning outside, watering the plants to the cheery tunes of Techdog 1 through 4, and having a nice conversation with my neighbor about caterpillars. I spent the afternoon and evening indoors, the only one online on a Minecraft server with only Techdog 5 and 6 to keep my company. By the time I reached the final track on Techdog 7, it was past 1 AM, and all I remember is sitting on the floor, staring into the middle distance, and crying. I definitely wouldn't recommend this approach if you wanted to write a detailed review, but listening to all of Techdog at once made every part of it hit so much harder, and it's something I'll never forget.

fun fact: it takes longer to listen to this series than it does to listen to everything she released in 2021 and 2022 combined

Maybe I wouldn't have checked out the project if the album covers weren't a series of cute doggies but the album covers were a series of cute doggies so I put in the listening time over a week. It was a journey- starting from relatively bright IDM gardens and leading down into eldritch stark depths. It's a lot of music and I can't say I'll relisten to it again anytime soon but it left a strong impression.

I love that this album opens itself up to interpretation like this, because I had nearly the complete opposite experience of TD7.--
To me, 7-11 is The Bad Ending(TM). It's what you get if you become impatient with the 12½hr runtime and start skipping through the rest of the album. You'll still hear most of the production and you'll still get the impression of how oppressively long Techdog is, but you'll miss the emotional storyline (particularly, you'll probably miss the phone calls and think that 7-6 is just static, and therefore won't realise what 7-10 signifies). Everybody who skips through the album will at least want to know how it ends, so they'll skip to 12:38:28 and be greeted with an instruction to Stop, Try Again. Implied message: "And take the long way round this time. Do it properly, put in the work."
If you do it properly and put in the work you get rewarded with 7-10 (The Good Ending), where NF, playing Young Patricia, kicks the door down and tells Current Patricia "No. You were wrong. I'm still here. I never left. Let's party." and then they have the most emotionally cathartic duet in music history. This is The Good Ending(TM) and it does not require Stopping and Trying Again. (But if you do want to Stop and Try Again, you can - directly from 7-10, skipping 7-11 The Fake Ending, because the last seconds of 7-10 is exactly the same as 1-1 but just up an octave.)
(This also plays out in microcosm in the noise album: 6-11 doesn't hit the same if you haven't just come out from 6-1 through to 6-10.)

I love that you listened to all of tech dog, and that you took time to really think about it and explain it to me, even if, as music at least, it wasn't always what you love to listen to. Your thoughtful comments made me realize that, as a series, techdog 1-7 works on me almost as a piece of theater, one that took me on an emotional journey. It was at times joyful and at times harrowing, and it had a story to it, and like a work of theater, it's something i experienced as a unique artistic event, like going to see 'Death of a Salesman' would be a unique artistic event (or maybe at times it was more like going to see 'Waiting for Godot,'), and where 'repeat listenings' isn't necessary, any more than I'd go to see either of those plays more than once or twice in a lifetime. That said, though, I love listening to 1, 2, 3, and 4 as discrete albums, and there are tracks on 5-7 that I love as singular musical expressions and that I can listen to again and again.

Goddamn, this year has truly become the year of meaty and extra long reviews for you. First Orbital, then The Thumpmonks, and now this.
Anyways, I think this project is mostly pretty fantastic stuff. I don’t know how Patty did it, but she managed to make a project that is even wider in scale than NTS Sessions, and somehow made sure that nearly every track had more personality than any of the tracks from that album. I love the way it all starts with the first volume being small in scale, and the rest of the series just starts to slowly but surely go into complete insanity as the series goes on, ending on an emotional note with the last track on the seventh volume.
Overall, I can say for sure that this is excellent for the most part! I think I can comfortably call this one of her best projects to date!!!

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it started as something small in scale but then it just went off the rails and this was the result. Very relatable feeling tbh

i still have a few tracks on 7 i haven't finished but past that i've been really amazed that taxxon has made 12+ hours of music with not a single dud i can recall; i think my only criticisms are that there also aren't a lot of highlights for me and i didn't really care for techdog 1 when i first heard it but i think this is definitely a "greater than the sum of its parts" kind of series. i've also just been really fascinated by the whole concept behind this of an absurdly long album that gradually strays entirely away from what it's initially presented as, and i think that's especially what elevates this above something like the nts sessions, despite how much i enjoy that album as well

I just finished listening to the whole thing and TH-cam immediately recommended this to me lol
I'll probably check out other videos on this channel, I like the writing and I want to learn how to describe music

watching your reviews of albums I've listened to already is interesting to me, because you come at it from a more experienced, educated angle than I do, and end up having different takeaways than me in ways that i can understand and even agree with on some level.

my top 20 Patricia Taxxon projects (i ranked her full discography on my RateYourMusic account, if anyone's curious. i didn't feel like putting the entire thing here, but Patricia Taxxon is my favorite artist of all time, so i figured i should at least do something for her, since i'm ranking the discographies of every artist that TWA's done a discography review on so far. so i'm doing a top 20 instead)
    20. Agnes & Hilda (fav track: Your Throat Belies)
    19. The Art State (fav track: Rockafella)
    18. Fresh Tapes 2 (fav track: THE WITCH IS DEAD)
    17. Photo 4 (fav track: Please Hold)
    16. Aeroplane (fav track: Skyhorn)
    15. Sapphire Apts (fav track: Our Axis)
    14. Rosa (fav track: Courtship)
    13. TECHDOG 1-7 (fav track: DEDGDEDCDEDGDEOEGECEGHGCGOGCTCOCHCOTOHOTOHTHTHTHT (TD7 track 10))
    12. Endless (fav track: Windows)
    11. Hotel Songs (fav track: I'll See You)
    10. Telecommunications (fav track: Land)
    9. Yes, And (fav track: Certainly, Yet)
    8. Gelb (fav track: Try the Wine)
    7. Schwarz (fav track: Something Pretty)
    6. Winter Beats (fav track: Winter Beats)
    5. The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe (fav track: Our Father)
    4. Visiting Narcissa (fav track: Her Wine Cellar)
    3. Doraemon (fav track: Cold Water)
    2. Pix & Bit (fav track: Catch These Hands)
    1. Foley Artist (fav track: Jailbreak (fav Patricia Taxxon song))
    Honorable Mentions (no ranked order):
My Lady, Cicada, Traveller, Astral, Sir Pentagon, Rainbow Road, Crocus, Wax Under Wolcnum, Bicycle, Ten Skies
if i was counting TECHDOG as 7 separate albums, TD7 would be between TFORM and Visiting Narcissa, TD5 would be between Telecommunications and Yes, And, and TD5 would be between Sapphire Apts and Rosa. TD3 might make the list too, but it would probably be, like, #20. Agnes & Hilda and The Art State would obviously be dropped to HMs, and so would Fresh Tapes 2 if TD3 were to make the list

The gradual release of all these parts was really something special, it went in a direction I don't think anyone expected. Undoubtedly some of her best work ever.

Oh wow, its funny seeing the pinned comment, I had never put two and two together that this artist was also the TH-camr somehow. Its also funny since I followed the artist who made the album covers back when I used twitter more, and seeing them promote Task. And now I see you make a review on this collection, small, small world.
Also, new Biosphere is out, I hope you enjoy it, would like to hear your thoughts :)

I've been listening to this project on and off since the full release, including giving it a full run-through at least twice, and I still feel like I haven't heard it enough to have a fully-formed opinion on it. The production is obviously excellent, and the way these albums were structured with 5 coming out of nowhere makes it all the more memorable, but I can't help but feel utterly daunted by it's massive length even now, and every time I relisten to a certain album (besides 4, since I relisten to that one a lot) I always feel like I have a different take on what I'm being presented with.
Overall positive thoughts on this series, though. 4 is my personal favorite, with 3, 5, & 7 coming pretty close. 2 is the most forgettable one for me, and 1 is just over too quickly. I appreciate 6 for it's place in this series and the story of it, but it's my least favorite of all the albums here.
