The Chemical Brothers' "Goodbye" is my personal track of the year. The first time I heard it within the context of For That Beautiful Feeling, I knew it was gonna absolutely special. The two different iterations of the main core melody, the energetic breakbeat drums, the soulful vocal samples... there's something so compelling about it. Also, shout out to the Erol Alkan rework, which basically takes the best part of the song and extends it out into a basically-effective melodic techno remix.

To be honest, this year has been the worst year for me, and it's been extremely difficult in every way: work, hobbies, health.
And although I've been enjoying older music lately and haven't listened to much music from 2023, I'm glad that BT, Orbital, and Vale-Smith made the list.

Sucks to hear you haven't been doing too well. Let's hope next year will be a lot better:)
When it came to me and electronic music this year, there was a lot i listened to but not many of them were releases that actually dropped this year (i've been on a trance and acid house/techno binge lately so that means going back in time). From the electronic releases i've heard that did drop this year, here are some of my favourites in no particular order:
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - The Silver Cord (this release was what made me go on this trance and acid house/techno binge to begin with)
    Tim Hecker - No Highs
    Skrillex - Quest for Fire
Steven Wilson - The Harmony Codex (not electronic all the way through but there is enough of it on the album for it to count imo)
PinkPantheress - Heaven Knows (i guess more pop than full on electronic but it's soaked in dnb, 2-step and breakbeat influences so it counts for me)
    Sofia Kourtesis - Madres
NewJeans - Get Up (again like PinkPantheress it's more on the pop side of things but it also shares a lot of the same influences as PinkPantheress so i'm including it.)
That's all that pops to mind for me.

This has been a great year for me, personally, although I haven't been in touch with newer electronic this year. I've just been trying to catch up on as much genres as possible these days, with my time spent on AOTY really skyrocketing since January and making a few friends there. I've shown a couple of them albums I found from this channel and they've loved them, which is hella cool. Not eventful outside of that, but still great lol. Of all the albums shown on this list, I've only heard George Clanton's Ooh Rap I Ya (which I thought was great). So yeah, I got some work to do on that front lol, this list is gonna help me with that. Loved this list!
Surprisingly, my (electronic) aoty was Quest for Fire by Skrillex. None of the critics I watch seem to have liked the album as much as I did upon release, but it's grown on me even further tbh and Xena's just my favorite song this year across all genres. I absolutely love the sequencing on the whole album, and I will handily take this over Scary Monsters tbh. It's the last comeback I expected this year, and it stuck with me even more than expected, it's my only electronic 9 this year so far, but that might change.
My aoty in general this year was Lonnie Holley's Oh Me Oh My. I handily found it to be the most consistent, diverse and deep (both sound-wise and lyrically). Listening to it caught me off guard more than once on first listen and I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested lol.
This comment section was much-needed solace for me during quarantine in 2020-2021, so I'm glad the channel had that effect on you this year. It's rough, but it's an amazing feeling to have an escape place in our hardest times. With that said, I'm quite excited for 2024! Here's to the new year, cheers.

Always find myself discovering a lot of gems with these lists, thank you for continuing to make them. Personally, for me, my top list of this year as been the least-electronic of the decade so far. I don't know if my music taste is evolving or if I just spent more time looking back at old electronica this year than keeping up with the new stuff, but there are a few electronic gems I'd like to share:
Lapsung - To Turn, We Unlearn | This is a very short project containing a few 1-3 minute synthwork pieces totalling roughly 16 minutes, so it honestly feels more like an EP than an actual album. Regardless, despite it just releasing back in early October, it's one of my most replayed projects of the year. Despite each track being quite short, all of the ideas expressed in this project feel very fleshed out and immersive, and every time I put this album on I find myself lost in it again. Lapsung is an incredibly underrated artist who's been on a winning streak with me since the release of his 2022 album Is (Not) A Friend, and it definitely continues here.
How to Disappear Completely - Seraphim II | While not as strong as their first album in this duology, HTDC still manages to scratch that itch for moody almost-but-not-quite dark ambient drone music. Seraphim II definitely feels like you've descended deeper than where you were before, and the music in this album feels more pessimistic and tragic than the first album's rather uplifting tone.
Sun Lo - Shapes In My Head | Sun Lo is the collab alias of ATTLAS (I think you covered his album Carry It With You in a SSIM) and vocalist Richard Walters. I fell in love with ATTLAS's debut album Lavender God back in 2020, and while nothing he's put out since quite tops that album for me, this one comes pretty close. ATTLAS's blend of ambient and house music really make the songs on here feel as vast and expansive as some of the work on his first album. My only complaint is that I find Walters vocals a little fatiguing, especially since he performs in every track on the album.
Jessy Lanza - Love Hallucination | This album feels like the summer to Shapes In My Head's winter. The production on this album still feels drawn back and like it leans pretty heavily on ambient influences, but the production is far warmer and the beats are far more active and groovy here, while still evoking something vast and empty in my mind (especially the tracks Don't Cry On My Pillow and I Hate Myself). This album also feels late 80s and early 90s inspired in a way that doesn't feel cliche as hell, so that's nice too.
Here's my top 10 list of this year:
    10. Ferdous - Cool Party
    9. Jane Remover - Census Designated
    8. underscores - Wallsocket
    7. DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ - Destiny
    6. How to Disappear Completely - Seraphim II
    5. Lapsung - To Turn, We Unlearn
    4. Patricia Taxxon - TECHDOG 1-7 (I count this as a single album)
    3. Hammock - Love In The Void (my favorite post-rock band releases their best album since 2016).
    2. Lil Yachty - Let's Start Here. (If you told me at the beginning of the year that Lil Yachty would release what was for a good time my AOTY I would've been quite dumbfounded, and I certainly was upon hearing this thing, but a psych rock album from Lil Yachty ended up being exactly what I need I guess).
    1. Oneohtrix Point Never - Again

When it comes to discovering some underrated gems, I think 2023 has been such a good year in that regard. I can also definitely say that this year has truly been the year of pleasant surprises as well, like the latest DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ album for instance. Speaking of, nice to see her, BT, Reid Willis, Orbital, and Vale-Smith all make this list. They really came through with killer releases this year, but Sediment is definitely my favorite out of all the albums that made the list proper. I still can’t get over how fantastically well-produced and well-paced this whole album was, and it has a lot of standouts on top of it, especially Cast Your Net Over A Torn Earth. Also, shoutout to Chime’s Mindburn in the favorite tracks segment; that one is definitely my favorite track to have come out of this entire year.
The only album on the list I didn’t listen to is Andrea’s Due In Color, although it sounds like it can be something that I can enjoy. Other than that, here’s to more great music in 2024 and beyond!!!

    8) TECHDOG 2 - Patricia Taxxon
    7) Another Option - Lorenzo Bianchi
    6) Syntheism - EPROM
    5) Dens - Lenhart Tapes
    4) A Part Of You In Everything - Croatian Amor
    3) Venoms - Rites Of Fall

I skipped the introduction part of the video, so I didn't hear what you had said in beginning. Sad to hear that you had pretty rough year personally as well. I especially related to the part of constant self doubt and I think that my self confidence has been pretty much at lowest. Thank you for releasing constantly amazing videos, I feel like I could watch your reviews every day. There's certain way that you express your thoughts that I find most compelling and interesting to listen through.

A nice list with some entries I realize I need to go back and check out! Thanks for some of the recommendations and reviews that led to me discovering some of the best electronic records of the year in my books. Leaving Laurel in particular, had a gorgeous and heart-wrenching album that was easily top 10 worthy.
The BT, Orbital, KOAN Sound, and Reid Willis (another I checked out because of you; pleasantly surprised to see where that placed!) all were wonderful as well. Topping my own personal list would’ve been Anthony Naples’ “orbs”, the George Clanton and the Sofia Kourtesis.
Hoping your 2024 is better than this year! Keep up the good work.

ngl 2023 was a really bad year for me too, I really struggled and felt frustrated with making music due to my poor composition and production skills and I just in general felt like I couldn't get anything productive done and I have just been spending weeks without making anything or doing anything productive, especially towards the end of the year
2023 almost felt like an awkward transitional point, the pandemic was recent enough that we are still feeling the aftermath and effects of that whole disaster but it's been long enough since the pandemic that we don't talk about it anymore even though it's still affecting our lives.
not to mention things like the reaction to Chris Tyson transitioning and Kanye west, an artist who I used to love turning into...you know what made me really feel like we are just living in a bleak dystopic world where everyone feels the dread of the situation but nobody confronts it and instead they take it out by being hostile to other people
Bleakness aside not really sure if I'd say this was a particularly great or noteworthy year for music, there was one album (001011 by salvia) that truly jumped out to me and caught my attention but the rest just kind of went over my head. sorry for the bummer but that's how I feel, maybe it was just me idk. at least now we have 2024, so let's try to make it better!

YES! I thought it was strange after watching your review that you did for BT’s latest album and after I left a comment on your review with my thoughts on it that the Reid Willis album you recommended just sounded so much better. I found myself trying to parse through the BT bias I had for his earlier work and try to separate that from the music. But then came the confusion later in the year where I had such a hard time finding anything better than Reid Willis’s album. As far as electronic music from 2023 was concerned, that was the best album and I found it very hard to find anything that topped it. It fits somewhere in my overall top 5 from last year, but is probably the one album aside from Sampha’s album I’ll likely return to on the regular even five years from now. I felt like an odd one out for including this choice, but I’m glad to know I wasn’t alone in recognizing how great this album is. Looked forward to the list this year like any other and wasn’t disappointed with the selections and placements.

Sediment is such a great album, shape shifting all over around to create basically a better Mother Of, although Reid Willis earlier works like The 40 Year Hibernation and Born of Kaleidoscope, this record is nothing shy of the word "incredible", emotional notes and sobering melodies with First Grain lead the album into just something really special, definitely my pick for 2023's Album Of The Year

On the the Orbital comment, I saw them live in ‘98. I wish you were with me dude. Some people on earth just really get it.

Hmmm ... have to say I may have to have a rethink ... I too had Reid Willis at No 1 but since then I can't get No Highs from Tim Hecker off my music system. Its is brilliant and easily his best album to date IMHO .. it takes a few listens though as I pretty much dismissed it at first.

wow no chemical brothers, no george clanton, no james holden, no tim hecker, no chocolate hills, no Tzusing - do you even electronic?
bt has made the same album for basically the last 20 years.

I've heard and reviewed all those albums (aside from the Tzusing one, may have to check that out later) and I just wasn't personally into any of those others enough for them to be in consideration for the list aside from George Clanton obviously getting a shout for "I Been Young" (the rest of that album was good but ran together for me). James Holden thing was solid but didn't stick in my memory, Tim Hecker's thing was good but not really up to par with his best imo, Chocolate Hills album was just ok, Chemical Brothers album was an active disappointment for me. at the end of the day this was just a list purely based on what hit the most on a personal level so eh disagreements like that are bound to happen
(also as much as I liked the BT thing that's definitely the album mentioned in this video I'd least be willing to die on a hill defending, wouldn't go as far as to say he's been making the same album for 20 years but this album definitely makes more of a case for that being true than any of his others lol)

What kind of post is that? So you are asking a guy whose whole channel is dedicated to reviewing electronic music if he does electronic? Out of your list the only album I personally liked was Tim Heckers. Sediment is better than all of them IMHO.
