    The first new truck I ever drove as a professional driver was a 78 Freightshaker with a 3406B CAT and 15 speed. She would haul the mail and topped out at 92MPH. The guy I worked for was a broker in Mississippi and we hauled chicken to the West Coast and produce back. The speed limit was 55 and we always ran hell bent for election with the CB's and bird dogs working overtime to help us find "Smokey". Rough way to make a living running solo to LA and back once a week.

    I remember seeing these as a kid all the time at truck stops during roadtrips back during the 90s. Now you don't really see them. Kind of a sad realization that times have changed and I'm getting older.

      Young man, having been in the trucking business for 44 years, I can tell you from experience, those were rough riding, and with today's conventional trucks, they are much better, and less painful to drive. I have driven, a 1978, 1979, and a 1983, cab over Freightliner. They were good dependable trucks, but would beat your back pretty bad. I have also driven, cab over Peterbuilt, KW, International, Ford, Gmc, And Volvo. The GMC, and Ford had the best heaters, even better than KW, AND PETERBUILT. Compared to the other trucks (1977 models) in later years, the heating and A/C got much better as well.
      Have a wonderful day young man . I'm retired now and glad I am.

    So nice to see a lot of these older rigs being resurrected out of mothballs and on the road again. The cost of one repair on these current model computer run trucks will set somebody back a number of mortgage payments while these older trucks can often be self repaired by the owner.

      @kman-mi7su 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I drove one too, It was an 87 Freightliner cabover with the 310 cat and 9 speed. The truck was plain Jane white with spoke wheels and a standard sleeper, single axle and spring ride. I worked for a contractor who ran for Roadway Package System aka FedEx ground now since they were bought by FedEx. Drove from NJ to FL to PA and back to NJ in that thing. The truck was plain Jane strictly business but did have air conditioning which you needed going to Jacksonville during the summer and you wanted to get a good sleep in the sleeper.

      Vince J that one would be a T104064 T (Refer to component information label). From ‘89 to ‘94 (I think), Freightliner made a similar model, the A104064 T, which is what you’re talking about. The T104064 T was discontinued in ‘89, along with the other models in the T-series (Ex. T096064 T, T086064 T). The model designation means: Truck, 104” BBC, 6x4, Truck Tractor. The difference between the A-series and the T-series is that the T-series has the windshield separated by the frame, and the A-series windshield is separated by a black strip instead of the frame. Since ‘86, Freightliner, Sterling, American Lafrance, and Western Star have used model designations that use the same nomenclature.
