    The Peugeot 508 revives a grand tradition of big French cars in Australia. It’s comfortable, controlled, roomy and very stylish. In a world where most people have moved to SUVs, what is the role of the 508? Well, we think it would make an awesome executive express or second car to sit alongside a crossover in your garage, just as Volkswagen Passat 206TSI or Mazda 6 turbo would do.
    Available in fastback or wagon forms, the Peugeot 508 is available in a single high specification GT grade in Australia, with a 165kW (221 hp) turbocharged petrol engine.
    Should you be considering a new 508? Is a Skoda Superb a better option? Should Peugeot bring the PHEV version to Australia?
    In today’s video, Tom takes a detailed look at the 508 GT Fastback to give you detailed insights about this vehicle.

    Absolutely stunning car, as is the wagon!😍🤤 I’ve seen a few 508 wagons around Victoria on my travels & I always do a double take! I currently drive a 2017 Skoda Superb 206kw, 4WD wagon! This is by far in my opinion the best car I’ve ever owned. I’ve had BMW 3, 5 & 7 series. I’ve also owned an a 2014 A Class Merc followed then by a 2016 GLC. The Skoda wagon kills them. I’d never go back to an SUV. Good review again Tom.👍🏼

    I own one since last November, exact same colour as the test car. Absolute best vehicle I've had. Love the auto everything, enormous boot with seats down and the super cool look outside. I get a kick out of talking to the car ('get me home') and we're on our way. We get complimented by total strangers on how good the 508 looks. Negatives: a bit skimpy on inside storage (tiny glove compartment), not quite as easy to get in and out of if you're 5'11 or taller. After 15K travelled, we average 6.5 l/100km.

    Estate version would be in my garage ASAP if a bit cheaper new but keenly watching second hand prices as a few now on the road and it’s such a great looking practical car and definitely an anti CUV and all the better for it - here’s hoping Stellantis keeps importing cars like these into Australia

    Thanks Tom. We have an old 406 SV paired with a large SUV. Agree totally with your reasoning about having the advantages of differential vehicle styles. We love both for different reasons. Pity the Peugeot marque has diminished in Australia and options are limited. The old 1970's 504's had legendary handling with their fully independent suspension and rear wheel drive.

As they failed to be honest about the true condition of the vehicle I purchased. Finally, even when the 508 uses the same EMP2 platform underpinning the 3008 and 5008, in the case of the 508 Peugeot added 3 meters of adhesive to make the platform more rigid. This is the reason why the car feel so planted at high speed. It is not only because of being lower and more aerodinamic than its counterparts. The 508 is less sportive than a Kia Stinger. It is more soft, more quiet and, therefore, more refined than the Kia

    I'm somewhat interested in a wagon form of this lovely car. It looks lovely inside and out. That said, I contacted my good friend who works at the largest Peugeot dealer in Sydney and he said that it is a nice car and worth considering but he went on to say that if something breaks down, one would potentially have to wait 2-3 months until the part comes from Europe. I'm sure Peugeot is much more reliable that it used to be, but, as my mate suggests, not being able to drive your car for months due to potential part unavailability-and it does happen-would be very frustrating indeed. I'm looking for a car (wagon) that would be our only vehicle and I think reliability is key for us. After much research considering aesthetics, dependability, overall quality and of course price, I think it will be Mazda 6 Atenza Wagon. It ticks all boxes for us, minus the old infotainment. :-) Thanks for the great review!

    • @pastorofmuppets8834
      @pastorofmuppets8834 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes don't take Australian attitude toward French cars as anything but flawed. I'd know because I've owned five French cars over the last 19 years. Peugeot topped the JD Power reliability survey in Europe last year I think (or was it 2019). I've heard of lots of engine issues with Mazda (that shocked me!) so every manufacturer has issues.
      Peugeot needs to up its game with dealer network. I would probably sell my Focus RS and Clio RS to buy the PSE wagon if/when it comes out.

    At AUD$55K Peugot 508 would have been the default choice over Mazda6 top variant and Superb with premium pack, but at $62.5k which is its current drive away price, Superb with premium pack at AU$62k as well as A4 MHEV with some add-ons at AU$67K comes into the picture. Peugot should also consider putting a normal steering wheel. That small steering wheel is so inconvenient in twist and turns.

    People think they need an SUV for the family, they don't. When I grew up in the 80's and 90's, I had 2 brothers, and we had a 120Y, followed by a Ford Meteor, then a Lancer Wagon. It took us everywhere. The SUV push has been the biggest con in motoring.

    • @MeasureOnce
      @MeasureOnce 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great idea with the fastback comparison. Kia gives a lot more model choice. The Stinger is built on the same platform as Genesis G70 - super strong safety cell, v quiet laminated windows, lovely engine and gearbox. Choice of heads up display, sports brakes, cooled & heated ventilated seats, 7 year warranty. The Stinger is heavier though, with a relatively smaller petrol tank and thirsty engine- you'll be at the servo somewhat more often. Both great looking cars. On the other side - Stinger doesn't come in a wagon, and Pug does.

    • @TheTouchgaming
      @TheTouchgaming 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MeasureOnce I think the fact that both are hatches/fastbacks makes up for the fact a little that the stinger doesn't come in a wagon. Overall I do like wagons better but can't argue that a fast/sportback looks better at least to me.

      I can confirm that. Bought the redesign 308 few months ago. My 3rd Peugeot, absolutely love it.

    Great styling, but the small displacement engine, inferior suspension setup, constrained backseat space and wonky user interface make this a difficult proposition in my view. Never mind French electronics.

      Inferior suspension it isn't. On paper it sounds bad, but didn't you hear that it drove really well?

      It's a very light car so engine size and performance are more than adequate, driving dynamics and comfort are excellent, as well as modern PSA reliability is very good. Basically, you didn't watch the review.

      @@neilrolley2297 Just to set the record straight, I am old enough to have owned and loved real French cars, like the Renault 4 and 5, as well as the Citroën Deux Chevaux. For me, the problem with Peugeot is and always was that its cars were never French enough (soft suspension, practicality, quirkiness), while never being seriously good enough to compete with the German brands. YMMV.

      The reviewer has made a mistake here. The 508 gt has adaptive multilink independent rear suspension. I have this car, it handles and rides brilliantly. Maybe he had it unknowingly setup to the harsher riding sports setup

    My issue with French cars, even tho I've never owned one, is concern of style over substance e.g. looks great but does the tech actually work? Examples are laggy infotainment reports, auto high beam not being reliable and blinding oncoming drivers.
    Would love to take confidence that everything works as well as it looks and things like lane keep just shouldn't be a question in 2021.
    Abither gripe with many cars is why no 3 way split folding rear seats!? It's such a useful feature if you have 2 kids!
    You lost me at "torsion beam" though Peugeot.

      The torsion beam rear really isn’t the issue it is in other makes. The French do it right

      And as per previous comments allegedly this has multi link rear suspension. So, what the issue?

  • @philiplee7604
    @philiplee7604 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think Peugeot will retain its status as “ an orphan “ in the ultra competitive Australian marketplace... Torsion bar rear suspension, and your comment about the “occasional clunk from the rear suspension “ just doesn’t cut the mustard in this price segment, where the buyer expectation is for a smooth compliant ride quality, that is obviously lacking due to the exclusion of a multi- link rear suspension.
    Also, surprised that no reference was made to the transmission shift quality.
    Personally, when you factor in the marques horrendous depreciation, problematic electronics and an almost extinct Australian dealer network that has been struggling for decades, I ask myself, why would you buy this car?

    • @sjb2471
      @sjb2471 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The rear suspension is multi link in these, so perhaps there is just an issue with this car, the depreciation is terrible on any mainstream medium traditional car, and the reliability is no worse than anyone else these days, and possibly better than most. And this tired old line about dodgy electrics...once maybe, but you do realise the electrics in all cars these days are third-party supplied? Usually by Bosch, Delphi, Siemens, Qualcomm, Valero etc - all global companies that supply all the car makers, so that relic of a “fact” about French cars is well outdated.
      But yes, the dealer network in Au’s is terrible, it’s true. Apparently we only buy Toyota’s, Fords, Mazdas and VWs these days :/

      Personal preferences. Some people (myself included) like the added involvement of a slightly bubblier ride associated with a decently set up torsion beam. Especially when the weight distribution is right. That’s mainly how the Peugeot 308 GTi manages to feel different from it’s key rivals. This 508 must have a stiffer than usual multi-link to give it a sportier feel..
