This is just my theory, but I think high emotional intelligence helps make a good actor. Without an empathy for your character, a performance can come off as insincere.
Emotional intelligence is highly underestimated. It is important. Academic intelligence without emotional intelligence can cause as much damage as vice versa.
Now that's RDJ being RDJ and not Tony stark. It's so different that he is such an emotional person which of course we all are but man this is a completely different personality that we have seen of him
You can see why he's the perfect Stark though. He didn't become Tony. He made Tony him. In so many comic runs Tony is purely a vessel for story telling. Most of the time nothing more than a personality trait in a suit of armour. RDJ gave him life.
Been watching a few of these. Robert is very impressively articulate, and you can see he's gained a lot of knowledge and wisdom from his long history in the industry. It's wonderful that his career has capped off with such an iconic and legendary role in its later years.
he's one of those people that you think you know what they're saying and then you lose them midpoint because they form thoughts and sentences way faster than you can comprehend lmao
@Phry3 - I won't address your entire analysis, but as for your one example, RDJ did not say "they gave me enough rope to hang the set..." - which indeed makes no sense - he said, "He gave me enough rope to hang the whole project" - which makes perfect sense, in that he took a well-known idiom and twisted the ending to "up the ante", as it were, which is entirely relevant to the point he was making - that if Favreau's trust in him had turned out to be misplaced, not only would RDJ have failed, the whole movie would have failed. As for the rest of his musings here, I had no problem following what he was saying. The group dynamics of any artistic process are highly abstract and not easily put into words, but he manages to do a decent job of it here, speaking both creatively and intelligently. But you have to pay close attention and think about what he's saying, relating it to your own experience with the creative process. (For someone who has no such experience, I suppose, it would be difficult or impossible to comprehend what he's talking about.)
I feel like he might be the first to tell you that you're not stupid and that there was a point for him, as there is for all of us, where he was at whatever point you're at as well. In other words, it's not that he's innately superior or you're innately inferior, just at different stages of growth. If you watch his interviews with Craig Ferguson they sort of acknowledge each other as both being quick, so when you know you're on an even playing field, it's easier to see the differences of all the other aspects of self. You can be a butt in some thing and mature in others and it not be a contradiction. He one-ups him in one moment and falls flat on his face the next. Just enjoy it as much as you can, soak it up as much as you can and ride the wave onto the next stage =)

Acting has to be one of the most obscure experiences you can have. You come together for a 3 month shoot. That is your life 24/7, with people you never met or barely know, and you have to somehow develop a genuine connection. And if you don't, and you hate the person, you have to somehow fake it. If you can't, it will come off on screen, the movie won't work, and you might not get work again. And you do that over and over. I can't think of another scenario that compares
Tbh I was really sad when I came to know his contract with marvel was up, but now I am relieved. This man is a genius and we need him to do some quality movies. The movies that really define the actor in him. Marvel was just a cakewalk for him. Come on rdj, bring us some quality movies! ❤️
I love this interviewer. I'm not saying he's the best, but he gets the best. He's a nice blend with the right amount of kiss ass and submission while being able to lead the big bear with pokes and prods that come off like "wow, tell me more."
It's always been clear to me, that Robert Downey is a brilliant person. Often brilliance comes with a price, and much like he mirrored this in the character of Sherlock Holmes, Robert turned to an erratic self destructive drug fueled coping behavior to get through it. Even when he was most troubled, it was easy to realize, that he was extremely talented and one could've only hoped to see him pull through the hard times, and land on the level of success he's on now, that he clearly earned. He's consistently delivering solid performances, and both entertaining and insightful commentary outside of movies. Listening to him talk here gives viewpoints that certainly works on a movie set, but can be extrapolated on to almost every other situation in life.
Sam is a great interviewer. Super fun and interesting to listen to RDjr and how he's interpreting reality and how the gears are turning. Thanks for sharing.
Man the advice from 2:17 is so wise and comes from lots of experience. "It's like a one armed bandit." Didn't understand what he meant at first, but he described how when you go to a new set it's never all gold bars or the "jackpot". There are always problems, technical or personal. The question is how can I fit into that structure. It's SO true. Personally, I would always get frustrated working in new contexts with new people because there always was something new wrong. Well, here is the answer. No need to get frustrated, that's just how it is - there is always a wrinkle or unforeseen pressure point when you work with a new group - you need to figure out how to fit into it. So refreshing to hear this from a veteran like him who you would assume has no problems on new sets with his stature. He knows whats up.
A lot of this has to do with Wing Chun philosophy and it’s impressive to see how far it’s affected him. Monkey see monkey do is a lot like matching energies. You don’t overpressure or relax too much at any given moment but look for some connection to just be in the moment. When you find that balance, you begin to enjoy the process rather than the result. 80/20 rule. Most people see Iron Man. If you’ve come to this video though, you’re of the 20% that value the process and that appreciate some of what it took to get there. Same applies in martial arts and film. You don’t just get there. It’s a lot of chaotic energy finding itself before it reaches a point where it can Be most effective. Sometimes, you never get there.
one thing i noticed in RDJs interview with Sam Jones is that he is indeed a very deep person. He talks in a very deep, emotional and intelligent way. i love him so much. I've been a fan of him ever since but this is the first time i see him very sincere and very deep. Most interviews i saw is that he is full of quirkiness which is amazing as well but its also good to see the serious side of RDJ. Long live, Iron Man!😍
Nice to know I'm not the only one who has no clue what he's talking about, lol. Like, he's so articulate and metaphorical, that he just loses me most of the time. RDJ still bout as cool you can get tho.
I don't think he will, sure he put some time in, but he didn't get solidly typecast and they made him filthy rich so now he has innumerable options compared to pre-2008 RDJ.
He seems like the kind of person who would be grateful for things, in whatever way, instead of resenting them. After everything he's been through he seems to focus more on positivity and mindfulness.
Freaky thing is, there's an interview somewhere around here when he was doing the European press for the original Iron Man. The setting of the show he was on was a more sort of frivolously silly kind of thing, the host was very young. There's a point in the middle where RDJ just kind of stops for a beat, then goes "god, what if this is like 8 years later, and I'm just running around deluded trying to be 'Action Man', I clearly have a bad toupee and am injecting myself with steroids?" He's smirking as he says it and they both have a good laugh, but he'd only still so recently entered into this totally unprecedented step for his career right then, it was something he knew COULD have been possible. That it all could've been a trainwreck (granted, one of the side details of the still-then-recent Kiss Kiss Bang Bang movie also featured some guy who's only fame came from embodying an action hero toy and his obsession with it ruined and killed him). To think, 12 years later, it all amounted to a crazy successful and critically acclaimed journey for himself he should only be proud of.
I love these interviews but sometimes it’s frustrating cuz actors give these vague esoteric answers like what are you talking about??? Why can’t they just give a straight answer? “ when you first walk on a set people are a little nervous and sometimes awkward and so they use bravado to push their ideas and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t but we gotta learn to trust each other.” Or like “ John favareau great guy.
