• World War 2 1945 GMC 6...
This Bantam Shield crane has been sitting for over 8 years! Will it start? If it starts will it run and operate? Let's find out!
This truck and I are beginning to have a painful history!
The truck is a General Motors 1945 World war two era 6X6. Also known as a cckw353 former military surplus truck made into a crane. Sitting atop is a Bantam model T35 crane. We call this rig "War Baby." The crane has a 4 cylinder gas powered Leroi engine. The crane is currently equipped with an orange peel bucket for digging 4 foot diameter water wells. Of course we want to see if it will start!
Sounds like I got a spring project!
That's what I'm hoping!@@lifeafterourloss
Great memories of the two T-35 Bantams I had. Also had all the attachments, loved running the old girls!
We still have the dragline bucket and clamshell. They are an amazing machine. 👍
Run that old iron , much respect for these old girls .they don't make machines like the good old days no more !
Hard to believe the truck hasn't run in a long time when the tires look so good.
They are rotten but the tubes still hold air.
Well heck yes! Start the truck! That’d be like giving us a piece of cake but no icing! 😂 Cheers!
Nice to get the lorry running , what a lovely relationship you two have, many thanks from gloomy old England.
I would love to see the truck run as well!
The truck videos now out.

Yes, make the whole kit run!
Well that was far too easy! Get that Jimmy going, move it around the farm!
Wow. Signs of life!!!
We had a lot of fun with this video. I had to drag Dad away from 4G for a day. But I could tell he was happy, especially when we got it running. Thanks Tom ☺️
My dad worked with a guy who used a Bantam around this era mounted on an International truck. It had a home made cable operated grapple and they loaded their logging truck with it. I've never seen one running. Thanks for the video!
I’m surprised it started up so easily!! Thanks!
We were supprised too. Was good to hear it run.
nice work. i didn't even fire mine up this year
Oh heck ya you’ve gotta fire that old gem up! A word to the wise, dont let Matt from Diesel Creek find ya! That unit will be go e in the middle of the night
😂
Imagine a full work day with this old beast definitely earplugs required lol.
Probably not as noisy as the one's with the Detroit Diesels. lol
Heck yeh, that was fun. Thanks for sharing.
Vote to see both running an moving
Thank you for story
Your Dad looked so happy up in the cab. Thanks for posting.
Excellent 👌
Near salt water these are ruined from rust.
We spray oil on everything with fruit sprayer drain oil plus kerosene mix.
Not on friction areas
Old timers taught me how to run Lorain and PH clamshell cranes.
Ps I made head gaskets out of thin copper sheet on old boat motor.
That's a great idea I'll look for some copper sheet! We're pretty lucky it's dry here. 👍
Great video! Yes, please do a will it start video on this truck and the other one !
You got it!
I had a 1942 GMC 1-1/2 ton 4x4 dually and a tank retriever crane on the back end. Unfortunately the truck engine didn't run when I got it and it sat at my Mechanic's house for a couple of months before he got a chance to take a good look at it and determined that we needed ALOT of sheet metal work because all the cab mounts were rusted away and the cab was in bad shape and the engine needed alot. We moved inside my garage a few miles away and it sat there for about a year until I decided not to pursue restoration and another friend who collected military trucks took it.
He started working on it but got sick and couldn't finish it and unfortunately passed away..
I don't know what happened to the truck because it was apart with piece's all over
It was made by The Shield Bantam Co. in Waverly, Iowa. The Shield Brothers sold it to Koehring Cranes in I believe 1963. There were Lorain cranes made there also. Northwest Engineering acquires the assets of Koehring and acquires the assets of Terex Corp. through a merger it was renamed Terex Corp. On July 19,2016 Terex closed the plant effective immediately.
Thanks for the history and insight. I'm going to pin your comment to the top!
Love those old cable-driven machines. That's a man's piece of equipment! Definitely get that vehicle running again.
Good video brings back a lot of memories
My dad ran a Bantam Backhoe rig on a military chassis like the one in the background in the early 50's. I spent many summer hours watching him dig basements. There was an art to running the levers and pedals. Great childhood memories!
Go ahead and give the truck engine a try. Great work on the crane engine and a few parts. I hope you get the chance to clean and grease/oil more parts.
jack,
In The Valley of The Sun, AZ.
I know where one of Those is At. It's mounted on a later diamond t diesel truck. But the Is crane is the same. They both run. He goes out and starts And plays with them every once in a while. Start the truck.
In my village in Serbia, the former Yugoslavia, we have 20 ww2 gmc trucks and we transport wood with them. In our country, they cost between 1000 and 2000 dollars
Can you still buy new replacement parts for them?
Unfortunately, no, that's why there are fewer and fewer of them in the villages
Кран с грейферным захватом...👍👍👍. Я на автомобильном автокране тоже иногда использовал грейфер..✌️✌️✌️
Thanks for sharing.
Please get the truck running 🏴💪
We will, just need warm weather! 😊
My Father had the exact same crane. I have fond memories of him letting me sit on his lap and he would tell me which levers to pull lol. His was on the same truck too.
Those trucks were such a popular and versatile platform. Glad it brought back good memories. 😊
Get the truck running also. It would be very good for it:)
I think we're going to try in the future.
Get yourself some scouring powder to sprinkle down into the clutches and on the brakes . Surprised your grandpa didn't pass along that old trick .
I will give it a try. 👍
That was a hoot ! If the drums are different sizes or if one drum has more cable on it then the other drum has they will be out of time so it’s the skill of the operator that would be able to work it without losing the load or if one drum has to much slack on the cable it won’t reeve up right on the drum and it will be what we would call a bird’s nest and if you get a kink in the cable it will stay there unless you take the cable off and straighten the kinks a cable straightener is easy to make but it’s better if you don’t kink it but you might want to take a paint pen and write on each lever what it does even which way the throttle works less chance of a accident.
You should ask your Grandpa if it has power load lowering on the boom hoist lever if not it’s kinda tricky to lower it and I would raise and lower it on low idle so it doesn’t run away but loved watching this video it’s right up my ally sorry you fell I have done that a few times myself it’s no fun 😀🇨🇦
Glad you enjoyed the video. I really like the paint pen idea to mark the controls and settings!
The crane won't be much fun if the truck won't run!
Nice clean machine! I would be proud to have this in my collection. The other children would have a new playmate to talk to!
Heart warming and appropriate for the season, love and family are so important to us especially today. Your interaction with your dad is golden he is a cool guy and as far as I can tell is a lot of fun to work with. Not to mention he is very smart with mechanical and common sense. Great video best I've seen in a while! Happy new year!
Thank you. Happy new year to you a well!
Damn right she's gonna go....... gorgeous priceless and way 👍 nice.... worthy endeavor saving history...all the best 🎉.
Would love to see if the ol gmc will run
Starting fluid works well with wasp nests. 👌
I'll definitely give it a try on the next one.
Yes please give those units as much love as you can so they will be at least survivors and one day restoration beauties at least mechanically
Hell yes...start it up!
That looks like it's fun and hard work to run.
Will it start????? HELL YES!
Great job! But would like to see the truck started!
Nice shape for the age! Very rare!!!
That would be cool to see a will it run and drive video on the truck
We are going to give it a try in the future. 👍
Nice can't wait to see the video
Start the truck only if you can find something to DO with the whole machine.... imho..
Yes start the truck i will subscribe of you do
Deal
Start the truck start the truck
I love equipment vids like this, keep it up sir❤😊
Give ‘er the beans! Truck too!
I'd love to see you start the truck too.
I love the 6 wheel truck, Great camper for Large box, Military tires Awesome Truck. That's what you Put a Cummin,s In
Thought about a diesel. Cummins or even a Detroit. 👍
I would love to see the truck run too
This video will not make viewers forget Matt at DIESEL CREEK.
I wanna hear the truck start. Id dose look like it will run. The cab looks on good shape one whisky dent in the back I could see from the video. But the roof has not been caved in so it dose not looks like a seabed. The one major dent I did see is on the hood but that can be fixed. For as old as it is. It is still in very mint condition. The reason why I wanna hear it run is back in WW 2. USA send thousands of these trucks into the Soviet union as war aid to fight against the Axis power. How many Cubic's per square inch dose the crane engine have? To me it looks like a 2 liter engine? The wasps nest looks like typical yellow jackets, these things have open nests and they are just ferocious and annoying to deal with.
This truck is definitely in better shape than the other one. I'm not exactly sure what cubic inch that engine is. I imagine it is very close to it 2.3 ro 2.8 l. It's hard to find information on it and I can't find parts for it either. I know that at some point Allis Chalmers bought out Leroi engines.
It would be awesome to see it back in its military olive drab , having NDT tires would be nice but only if you plan on moving it , they are not cheep , although they make it proper where any other tread doesn’t
Yes i would like to see that truck run.
Do a will it start on the truck too
Will do!
Enjoyed your video very much. Also enjoyed the spirit of cooperation and comraderie between you and your Dad. Priceless!
1
Thank you!
Yes you should try to start the truck. I see the cat fairly often but have only seen Buddy once. Is he still around?
Buddy is still around. He does not like the cold weather, 😂. Buddy was out when I drove the Twenty Two around. I think we'll try and start the truck when we get some warm weather this spring. 👍
That's good. He reminds me a lot of the dog I lost this past summer.@@lifeafterourloss
@lambhill1180 So sorry to hear that. Buddy is really a loyal and caring friend!
From sure the truck has to run
Yes You Have to Start the Truck
cool piece of equipment
Get the truck running
Part of history there start the truck. Looks in good shape
That thing is just amazing. And the truck is too. The motor just kept humming through all that testing of it, seems tuned really well still!
You have some Cool stuff over there in the States. I say get the Truck going. That’s a great project. 👍🔧🇬🇧
Awesome video!
I really enjoy watching old machines at work.
I have an old horse drawen water well boring machine.
Mostly made of wood.
I've always found well drilling methods fascinating. I remember an episode of Little House on the Prairie from my youth. The character played by Victor French was drilling a well a horse drawn boring machine. I imagine it was just like the one you have. Even as a child I found it fascinating. The orange peel bucket on our machine was used to dig 4 ft diameter water wells. I have a separate video outlining the process. 👍
@lifeafterourloss one of my neighbors has a pounding well machine attached to a model T truck. I'm not too sure how it works, but it looks like it has like a transfer case from the transmission.
@badzbradzgoodyz6477 It must work like a pile driver.
@@lifeafterourloss yes
Yes start the truck
Heck yeah get that thing running
Cool old machine. Sounds very good. The engine reminds me of a Allis Chalmers WD engine.
My understanding is Allis Chalmers bought out Leroi engines. If I could find a head gasket I would like to get the cable backhoe running.
Would a Allis Chalmers WD or D17 head gasket work or are they different? I think WD is a 201 and D17 is a 226. How many cubic inch is the one you have?
I'm going to go out and look for the book for the machine. Got to thinking about it last night. Then hopefully I can nail down the cubic inch. I suspect you're correct knowing that Allis Chalmers bought out Leroi engines. They probably used that same engine. I'll check it out later today.
Why wouldn't we want to see the truck run?
great vid, yes revive truck also pls
We need a well dug! Get her going and bring her on out! Your grandfather told me how it worked but I never saw it run.
Excellent video guys 👍👍👍
I really enjoy your video's I also have a Bantam unit except mine has a shovel which i use to move dirt on my property. I also have a C35 crawler crane with a 35' boom,3/8 yd drag bucket ,a clam bucket and a hook. Unlike your truck mine is only two wheel drive a CCK not a CCKW like yours .I also have a 1949D4 cat dozer .Keep up the good work .I live in Pa just outside of Pittsburgh
.Take Care
Yes get the truck running mate 🤙🤙🤙
Ive seen that truck somewhere when i was a kid .. 60s? 70s? I was pretty young but it intrigued me i was obsessed with it for years
If you grew up near Commerce City, Colorado, you have probably have seen it. It dug many wells in that area. Some still in use today.
@lifeafterourloss yea my dad worked at stapleton Airport and we had a farm near brighton where i grew up and commerce city was where we ended up getting tractor parts etc
@roryreid3124 Small world. I remember the old Stapleton. Always love the taxiway that went over I-70. Our family farm was closer to the Broomfield area.
@lifeafterourloss been there many times my ex girlfriend and i lived near lafayette for awhile ive been in washington state for 30 years now and been back to colorado once in that time ... don't know if I can ever go back there now .. its crazy compared to where im at now i live right in between mt st helens and mt ranier ... 2 volcanoes ready to bury me in ash lol
@roryreid3124 I understand, it's definitely not the Colorado I grew up in. May be better to take your chances with volcanoes, 😂.
Seems like you need to adjust the swing shoes closer to the drum. You don't want grease or oil on any of the linings.
I will definitely have a look at them, thanks!
Beautiful machine right there
Great video guys thanks for sharing hope you had a wonderful Christmas
Awsome to see and watch you guys operate the crane
Just like the saying goes, they really don't make things like they use to. That sure is an amazing rig.
I was hoping the tumbleweed would have taken the leap of freedom but it was determined to stay in the grapple! 😂
No doubt Matt from Diesel Creek would like to see this fine machine in action.
That tumbleweed did not want to leave its new home, 😊 I'm sure Matt and I have quite a bit in common. 👍
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE 1945 GMCRUNNING AND MOVING UNDER ITS OWN POWER, PLUS THE 2ND ONE IN THE BACKGROUND,
Thanks for sharing yalls adventures!!
We had a bantam on tracks and A insley and a hopto
Years ago I had a Bnntam C-35 crawler with dragline bucket that I cleaned ditches with. Great little cranes. Mine had an Allis WD tractor motor in it.
I know Leroi engines got out by Allis Chalmers. It's a fantastic sounding engine. We love that machine. The crawler would have been much safer and more versatile. 🙂
"бл абалдеть (Respect)" , ну вот где можно найти технику 40 х годов в таком рабочем состояние ???!! ,like 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much for the kind words. We will get the truck running when the weather warms.
They have abandoned drag lines all over the USA I don't think people realize just how efficient these machines were/still are as steel cabling was a revolutionary idea "back in the Day"(history of the Brooklyn Bridge) and definitely single handed created what today is the global mining business. Talk about high quality steel! Interesting how given World War 2 when steel was rationed Industry still found a way to make such high quality machinery so very much a tribute to the engineering of the time especially Detroit in particular but most famous be New Jersey by way of Pittsburgh. One look at those tires says "World War 2" as well very high quality rubber back in the day...which also was revolutionary for the time ... and as with steel rationed as well. Even fuel was rationed back in those days actually. Talk about having to think through engine and power train design! I don't think there are any hydraulics with this as well as hydraulics had not been invented yet 1945 or if invented not capable of being mass produced anyways. Interesting use of concrete as well. Did have pneumatics at this time tho. Out west everything used dynamite tho...when not using Roman Fire anyways. What's really great about World War 2 Era equipment is usually came with a manual actually. Find that for this would make for some interesting reading material would be an understatement.
Yes please work on the trucks.
My grandpa had these kinds of
Trucks in his house moving
Business 60 years ago. Id love
To see you tinker with them.
Thanks
We definitely will when we get some warm weather.
Sorry about the fall... I have a bad set of ankles and if I get too tired, you can bet they'll roll when you least expect them to.
I am the same way! Gravity is definitely not my friend and I've broken that left foot about five times. 😖
