pls keep making these, sword content isn't dead for me.
No no but… but… SHAD SAID SO
I think if you combine swords with popular topics like a tier list that helps the content, maybe?
@@ghoulishcoder5258 Correct like the swords they were ranking. If they did a video with an actual ranking visual as they talk about them would go over well.
content goes in waves eventually youtube will ease up on weird history restrictions and history will become popular from a movie game something and it’ll become pop culture and then fade for a time and then come back like everything in humanity
Tyranth: "Most of these things are where I would put them."
Me: "Where else would they be? You're the one making the list!"
I was thinking the same thing lmao.
And just most? Which ones aren't where they go?
Your ranking system and equivalence is also extremely fair reliable informative and fascinating
Tyranth: "dont put lore reason for why a weapon should be rated higher!"
also Tyranth: "for the context of vampire hunting the cross is great"
;PP
Right. If any of these weapons deserves a boost based on context it's the halo energy sword.
Obviously tyranth only considered how these weapons would fare against real world adversaries. Like vampires, lol
That's legit real reason! Garlic be with You.
So you want to tell me that vampires aren't real
Wow, I'm surprised you put the giant sword so high lol. I love the throwing cross too, it's just really cool and I'm surprised at how good it was in your video.
Well as someone pointed out to me years ago, standard swords are optimized for certain things. Such as stabbing other Humans. Cloud? Cloud often fights Robots bigger than he is. The Dark Souls one... you fight full-size DRAGONS and other HUGE enemies in that game.
So according to the lore of T.I.T.S. you're spot on with this list.
I counter with the scale of "Best Objects Of Battle Simulations" or "B.O.O.B.S" for short. when he can find real-world equivalents of the weapon and do a side-by-side comparison, but I digress.
love your stuff man! unapologetically badass!
I wont lie, tyranth suckered me with that thumbnail. I clicked to see in what universe they keyblade could possibly be all the way up in B tier xD
I agree with all of your decisions on this ranking. It's hard for too many people to accept that their favorite childhood weapon from their favorite game honestly isn't that good/practical.
Good/practical in real life at least ;p
Sorry, not practical*
@Alexalicious well yes lol
i feel like people only talk lore because they want to talk about the lore
Basically yeah XD
Yeah it's sad that giant swords need some contextual in-universe justification. Other than that, I'd probably bump the Riddick dagger knife things down. They might work, but if there's no reason to choose them over a normal knife, well.
Well they do have some hand protection, of course so do dagger crossgaurds, but they are about equivalent to a knife i'd assume?
I don't know.
I'd drop the giant sword down 1 tier. Yes, it can do some of the things that a spear or similar things can do, but it's nowhere near the best at those tasks (probably the worst tool for those jobs). I'd find a better weapon for those tasks as this can't compete w/ them. It would fit better w/ the weapons in the C tier competitive-wise as it's function has more limits than other weapons on the B tier.
Noteworthy: This video did not show up in my notifications. Just happened to pop up on my feed. Lucky I clicked on that right away. Love your show! If you have a regular schedule of when you release content. Please let us know the details. Thanks!
I didn't see the Klingon Batleth in the list but I remember seeing you and Shad having a fun chat about it while testing the improved version.
Those assassin's needles, there's a good reason knitting needles aren't allowed on flights any longer. I'd have put them between A and S simply because for their intended purpose they are perfect [I mentioned in the video featuring them I'd read a novel years ago where knitting needle was used as the weapon of choice, and the story was inspired by a REAL life crime from back in the 1930s some time. And the ones you made could easily pass for ordinary knitting needles meaning you can literally carry them in plain sight. Hair pins are another weapon I've seen mentioned as well from a law book written some time back around the 900s and your needles - if a bit shorter - could easily pass as hair pins for keeping long hair up. Definitely items used successfully in the real world and for over a 1000 years as well.
Great video, must find the first one in this series.
The Vulcan weapon is a Monks shovel on the front end and is a real world weapon
Series suggestion, A comparison between fictional weapons against what their based on/inspired by/closest to whatever previously mentioned.
I feel like if the throwing cross is at S, Yor's daggers should be as well. Both were really good thrown, lightweight, and could be used in melee. With the daggers having a bit more reach, but the cross has a handle for a significantly smaller sized blade on any side. Just my thoughts though, have a nice day!
Btw, really enjoying the videos. Your calm demeanor and chill attitude is sincerely refreshing compared to some other sword content creators on TH-cam who take things too seriously
I really wish your channel would get more views! Awesome realistic replicas and rankings
I still say the whip sword coulda got more love if we used 2 internal bungie cords in the center (a east inner-wall cord and a west inner-wall cord) so that it would have some automatic retraction to it. It will still be problematic, but I think it's interesting to explore what new faults we would see from such a design.
You would need 2 to "orient" it so that it's "less" likely to twist and miss-align.
The whip swords that I have seen in fantasy and real life allow for the blade to fit together so it can act as one piece. One I have seen in real life used notches and a braided wire with stops on it so that you can pull on the wire with your second hand to pull the blade back together to keep it from whipping back at you via rebound and what not. This means that you use 2 hands for a one handed weapon (the second hand looks like it is on the handle, but it is on a second handle for the wire and doesn't add leverage), and it is a bit fragile for a real weapon. It does mean that you aren't powerless from rebounds like with flails and nunchucks, but it is still a dangerous weapon for the user due to the unpredictability of real combat. The design with notches and the ability to retract the pieces together does mean you can thrust with it like a real sword, but any flex from not hitting perfect might break it.
The build quality of a whip sword would have to be ridiculous to be functional and rank higher. "Lore reasons" or just looking cool in a fictional setting are the only way they can be legit weapons.
The one Ivy uses in Soul Calibur is clearly a magic weapon that CAN'T function IRL. It doesn't have a chain... it has what looks like steel cable. also Ivy can somehow retract it to form it into a straight edged blade. That does NOT work IRL.
Here's the usual full support for channel growth.
Great video guys
Im looking forward to the next step
In a progression fantasy book series called Path of the Berserker the giant sword is called a "Glaive" and is described as using glaive, aka polearm, techniques to be wielded effectively. I think that is a fair assessment of the "role" of big fantasy swords they are used in much the same way as one would use a halberd or glaive.
I actually agree with you about Guts's Sword, and we actually see that in story as well. Maybe not the Dragon Slayer, that thing is HUGE, but his sword pre-betrayal sword. The large sword vs a saber was no contest. Dragon Slayer is an amazing sword, but in real life that thing would be unusable.
Its a good tier list and i agree with most of it. Maybe for a future video ideas how about some more Star Trek weapons, like the Kar'takin or the Klingon Mek'leth.
If the energy sword was an actual energy sword, where would you put it on a weapon tier list?
Yeah, it's got a lot of advantages in being able to melt other weapons or very easily slice or stab through bodies without getting stuck, but it also places your own hand very close to a dangerous plasma field and wouldn't have much weight in the blade to be able to understand what the weapon is doing while you're swinging it.
Would you place it higher or lower than a lightsaber?
S tier no doubt.
Well since energy can be stop by clay plates since they chunk a clay covered satellite into the hottest part of the sun which is the atmosphere around the sun from the radiation.
science isn’t sure if surface or being right outside is the hottest since heat radiation.
the satellite was Able to scan it and get info unphased
Because clay can’t be easily destroyed by heat.
so clay armor could stop it entirely. So if your hand slips whelp no fingers anymore.
I love your videos man.
Well, Tyranth, in lore you..... Naaaah, just kidding. Very nice video again. Musical greetings from Belgium, Gunther (singer and lyrics writer of Gabriel Scar)
The pain on your face with the s tier cross is classic
With the giant sword I'd be interested to see if you could look at Siegfried from the soul caliber series and see if his fighting style is at all plausible? Things like using the large blade like a shield or a battering weapon, and as was pointed out, in a duel setting which would require a foam version
Yeah, I got into an argument with someone on the AC Hidden Blade who was just slobbering on the devs and lore as though that invalidates practical irl discussion.
For a second I thought you weren’t in a kings chair with your background for some reason lol. You should do that. That’d be cool
I think the best use for the giant sword is in breaking spears in a larger formation. Strike retreat and let your allies utilize the gap.
But in my head cannon my key blade has +10 true damage and therefore you are wrong, you fool.
Also I am never ready for the dmca free silent night, it has been a while since it snuck into a vid.
If only all of those type of comments were sarcasm haha , thanks for the support man
I was quite surprised to see the lirpa so low. I'd've swapped its place with the giant sword myself. It's always interesting to see what your opinion of these weapons is when you add them to the tierlist, since it can vary from the first impression you had with them.
Thank you for your amazing builds
I’m glad you enjoy them!
I think the giant swords could, potentially, be useful for breaking up enemy formations. Especially, if the enemy is using one-handed weapons and a shield. Basically, what I think is spears and giant swords would be like the two opposite ends of the same tactic. Spears for defense and giant swords for offense, in regards to charges. Main reasons being that the giant sword would be more likely to knock people down, if they don't penetrate anything, and less likely to break on impact. Might work well to have the first two rows of a sword unit carrying them, then have them discarded after the initial charge.
I think they might work well for shock tactics, basically.
But, even still, I wouldn't put a lot into them. That'd probably end up being quite expensive and only really useful sometimes. It'd probably make more sense to just get more horses, and train extra cavalry. I think a giant sword unit charge might work a little better against a spear unit, than a cavalry charge might (at least, if it was a head-on charge.) But, I doubt it would be worth giving up an, in the best case, equivalent strength unit for a unit with less mobility.
I will always say that the energy sword from halo is surprisingly functional for humans but drawbacks are always gonna make sense since they're designed for something that isn't human (iirc the species that makes up elites have symmetrical hands)
i would put Riddick's knifes higherm because if you are trained in hand to hand combat and not with swords it's better to get something you are relatively used to than something u have never used, imagined a newby with a sword: movements, edge aligment problems etc; with knife: very basic stuff; but with something that you can even punch, and protects your hand, yes
The Vulcan weapon makes me think a lot of a monk’s spade just with a large blunt end. Yor’s needles for some reason always made me think of misericordes. That they would slip in the gaps in armor
I still think if a keyblade in essence existed in the real world, it would be the key to the embedded from dark souls 2. Literally a great sword with a key shaped handle/cross guard, that actually acts as a key for a great iron lock.
Is there going to be a stream next weekened about sets of armor built around countering and avoid lethal hits of certain types of weapons like glaives or banded war clubs? If not, try to rank TES: Skyrim or Morrowind's weapon and gear apparel on what is right and not right.
Looking at the list, just feel you could rock a Victorian gentleman look with the cross and cane sword. A true S tier in style and deadliness.
I'm a simple man. I see big sword, I click.
I don't know if you could actually make it, but would you consider rating the chain sword monstrosity from The Brotherhood of the Wolf?
It looked to have an automatic retract function and was much larger than Ivy's version.
I think the ideal context for giant swords is "regularly fighting creatures larger than yourself". Cases like Monster Hunter, Dark Souls, or anything else where the weight of that sword is going to actually make a noticeable difference in whether or not you can damage a creature with your weapon. While to some extent that is "lore", we still have a number of animals where such a weapon could very well be advantageous compared to a more normally sized sword. Animals like bears, hippos, and a few others.
Bears and Hippos are faster than most people think. If they’re charging at you, good luck swinging a big heavy weapon at them with enough accuracy to do anything. Look up videos of bears climbing trees, they’re scary fast. It would probably just piss them off. Bear attacks and hippo attacks are no joke. For clarification, not trying to come across as an attack or being rude, just wanted to chime in and add to the conversation 😉
@@BrandonJPearce On that same token, humans are also considerably more fit in the circumstances mentioned because, again, dealing with animals larger than themselves. You know, the same caveat that allows giant swords to work in fantasy settings to begin with.
So to that end, I'm not disagreeing with you. We don't fight larger animals on a regular basis in the first place, it's pretty rare. And since we aren't, humans generally aren't going to be build to deal with that.
@@BrandonJPearce You are absolutely right about that but nobody would honestly go into such an melee fight alone. This kind of weapon benefits enormously from group coordination. Getting of one good hit with that thing while the creature is occupied with someone else might cripple or kill even large creatures outright.
You wouldn‘t use overhead swings against human opponents but against a dragon looking the other way?
I just remembered a poor hardwood stump that was nearly cut in two with a blunt sword.
@@Aufsammelkabbler Im talking about a real life use of the weapon. People don’t intentionally go into melee fights with bears or hippos at all, with or without a group. So I’m not sure what your point is.
Regarding the cane sword, I'm really curious how the mechanism for the crows beak holds up under stress. Worst case scenario it breaks after a few hits, but you're still left with a stick. The locking mechanism on the actual sword/knife (which also has no crossguard/tsuba as shown by you and AC Syndicate) keeping in the rest of the stick *might* rattle after a while if it's not as simple as a thread (and it takes way too long to unthread) It's still a stick and sticks are awesome, I just think it might be slightly worse than a plain walking cane...
In my very unprofessional opinion: the energy sword belongs in S tier for one advantage no one's ever mentioned:
Because of the way it's held, it's intuitive. As in someone with experience in boxing and other unarmed martial arts who hasn't once touched a sword could quickly pick it up
Glad to hear my criticisms of the keyblade elsewhere. I often call it a club due to how Sora uses it rather than an axe, mostly due to the in-game model of the key. Other than that, no notes.
Whip swords only work if you can physically control the motion of the “whip part.” This is especially the case when you can bring the blades together to form a solid blade that you can use like an actual sword. Since that’s not possible (at least with current technology), I relegate it to purely useful in a fantasy setting. I think putting it in D tier is an insult to other weapons in the D tier
Giant swords were also used against cavalry. More of a niche weapon IMO, and might be more of a C tier
If sword content is dead in the algorithm its because we will soon be fighting with them
as a battlefield weapon, The lirpa is limited I agree, but I think it is Meant to be a Dueling weapon and that changes the calculus. Even in the real world I believe there are specialized dueling weapons that work quite well in their context but would be far less effective in the real world.
"We're not talking about lore."
Also: "The cross shape is useful for vampire hunting."
Love you, Tyranth, but I'm getting mixed messages. 😄
The thing I’ve always heated about the halo energy sword is the fact one slip and you lose your fingers
Giant sword may have one important quality irl - intimidation. I would be a bit scared seeing someone waving a ~6kg of sharpened steel.
All hail the Algorithm!! Also, great vid, agree with all your choices. Looking forward to the next one.
Who would have guessed? The big and mighty stick is S tier the best weapon ever made just below the long distance drill (gun).
Tyranth, for the 19th time, please could you do your expert opinion on the crowbars from the anime “The Eminence in Shadow” the the protagonist Cid uses and how he uses them!!!!
8:37 I wonder if a longer Tang would've mitigated the pressure that caused this one to break?
you should try the fenrir keyblade design which would be much better as a sword
I would like a video about like everyday objects and how good they could be as weapons like table legs frying pans maybe even like actual tools like woodcutting axe maybe a hand saw screwdriver vases ummmmmmmm kitchen apliances idk just normal stuff in houses
Axes as whole would be interesting topic. Somewhat involved process, but should pick like half of dozen different sizes and materials. From tiny ones, to very large ones. Also metal, composite and wood handle. Some of them get really heavy and some of them might be too small.
@_Ekaros i think thats an amazing idea
I stand by the Keyblade. I would use the teeth part of it but I feel like it gets not enough love
Kinda weird how TH-cam works ... being a subscriber since the channel existed, this video was not recommended to me. I found it while using the search function, looking for a cooking video o.O???
The vigoorian flail nunchucks from ninja gaiden hopefully in the future 😱
i could see giant swords being very useful in armored combat
Not sure if this counts as "lore reason" but i wouldnt match up the giant swords like the dragonslayer against other long range melee weapons, like spears and polearms, but against big, beefy monsters with thick hides, like dragons, and for those enemies, the extra mass and cutting ratio compared to a spear might actually be very beneficial.
Against seriously large creatures like ogres, trolls or dragons spears might actually be quite flimsy weapons. Breaking those wooden shafts isn‘t easy for human enemies but one claw swing would shatter a multitude of those toothpics in one go. A spear formation is still quite effective against those threats since you do not want to come close to that kind of enemy but in many cases you would loose your spear against blows not even targeting your weapon directly.
whip swords are just inferior versions of ribbon swords, which are inferior versions of both a whip and a sword
Basically the more "terrible" the weapon, the more magic or meta abilities needed for it to be a good weapon. LORE! LOL... kidding man... great video!
I would rank giant sword a D tier because you need a limitless endurance to swing this thing.
wasnt the vulcan weapon based on the top end of either a certain specific spear/axe from ancient egypt (possiblyu it was just ceremonial) but looks like they went for a mace addition on the end, again there is so little evidence of it (possibly hanging around in some uk museums) that it seems like a purely ceremonial item, and definitely doesnt have the lump on the other end
Some of the insanely sized weapons are more along the size of a weapon usually held by a bulky westerner as a breaching method (resorting to normal sized stuff after the shock value of the huge weapon) but then being held by the historically for the time used smaller japanese and chinese population (though im guessing certain heros in manga are around 6ft tall and built like arnie, specifically looking at guts for this one, with how he towers over other people, in the same fashion as Lu Bu)
Now how about usual things that used as weapons, keyboard like in "wanted", pens and books like in "jon wake", other home and office stuffs
Gaint swords are for big strong boys to fight an even bigger monster like trolls, dragons, gaints, elephants and ware-monsters like a big wearwolf or a humniod Bear. It is also good for fighting on the open by yourself or few individuals against hords of like many people or orcs and goblins. At the same time it is thick decent enough to hide behind against arrows to some extent.
Guts even with in reallife would be a monster cause the guy is 2.2m tall with extra strong and build plus fit and build as a knight warrior with tone of skills and experience. With armor he is basically on Lubu's level especially with a high end full plate European armor. The guy is very tall fast and quick.
Am pretty sure any fit individual that is 2.2m tall could automatically in a month time training win World Strongest Man competition world champion or even deadlift up to 600kg.
I would have put the Furian Knives in C tear. Short weapons, for the most part, need to be versatile and easily handled. That is hard to change hands or even grips, and because of that draw back, I don't like them that much.
The most effective way to use the whip-sword as an offensive weapon is to give it to your opponent. I think a D-tier ranking is overly generous.
I'd put giant sword to C tier
Because while it's a legit weapon, with all it's drawbacks I don't think it's as usable as the other ones. Even carrying it around looks extremely inconvenient.
The leia pa? the vulcan weapon would be a great gardening tool!
for oignions
I'd probably bump the halo "energy" sword up an extra notch especially when assuming you made the handle to be comfortable for humans. As it is reasonably practical and in most ways a superior weapon to shield, crazy awkward to carry multiblade Krull thing, and the overly massive hammer - so I'd give it parity with them anyway.
Similar with the Lirpa IMO it is more on par with many of the weapons of B teir, though I also wouldn't shed tears if some of those got demoted instead. It could so easily be improved into an S teir or at least an A tier with a slightly longer stick or less oversized bowl end, so languishing so close to the horribly impractical lolipop of death and keyblade just seems wrong.
But in lore all you need to do is ⬆️⬆️ ⬇️⬇️ ⬅️➡️ ⬅️➡️ B A Start and then the weapon’s perfect.
“Umm AkTually, ThE KeYbLaDe NeEds MaGiC To WoRk. “ Even as KH fan it’s obvious that it’s a terrible real world weapon. It’s only somewhat usable as a force multiplier, but you’re better off with a baseball bat because the keyblade is so unwieldy to hold or use 😂
Only use I can see for giant sword would be like execution. As pointed out there are legitimate giant swords that are nimble.
Although I love the Keyblade, it would be a horrendous weapon in the real world. In universe? It's very effective. (They are magic weapons that break the bonds between the heart, soul, and body.)
I know you said the giant sword was supposed to be giant swords in general, but I feel I have to point out the specific sword you used was the Dragonslayer from Berserk.
And as huge of a fan as I am of Berserk, that sword would be F TIER if ranked by real world efficiency.
The version you were swinging around was extremely thin compared to the one in the story, the actual Dragonslayer weighs around 200 pounds and only the main character can lift it.
If you were to make a 1 to 1 recreation of the Dragonslayer you wouldnt even be able to lift it. B Tier is way too high for it
Not sure the riddick daggers should be so high considering the blades point at the user lol
Well, in terms of what a giant sword would be fighting against...I could only really think of horses? Like having the huge mass of the thing crash into the horse and maybe it's rider, but probably mostly the horse could possibly get it to topple over more easily than a smaller weapon so it doesn't just trample you while being killed by you at the same time. Not sure thou.
And there already are swords for horse; they're not anywhere as bing as the Dragonslayer. Anyway a spear would be better.
Drawbacks for energy sword wouldn't be if real level energy sword for war. Google: "Ultrasound holography with particles" Thick pressure hologram collecting the right things from the atmosphere into its holography image = Pick your style, its gonna be nonsense without at least Plasma generated Ultrasound shielding. Destructive sound interference(jam) or stronger pressure repel force than pressure image sword holds together with. *Shoots Ultrasonic pulse that echoes back then clashes another wave with it inside plasma* Ask AI: "Exciting plasma with Ultrasound makes higher EM field" What can be done with EM fields and plasma? *Points at Z-pinch fusion plasma drive NASA* My favorite shield/propulsion technology.
What level of shock waves could a fusion based system generate? Now we're back to talking about making God weapons but lets not talk about them right now. *Looks at the sky suspiciously*
What about scissors with meter long blades?
The whip sword you had sucked , you basically had a whip with extra steps
I'd say the Dragonslayer is the most impractical weapon on this list
The "energy sword" isn't a sword, it's a katar.
Only practical purpose for fantasy giant swords would be for cleaving through giant monsters, which of course don't exist in the real world. I suppose you could cleave a large bear, or a charging elephant, or something?
I would say this about most Giant weapons, including swords, A lot of games (not all of them of course) have Giant swords being used against Giant animals that won't have the means to defend themselves like a person would, How do you think they fair in that context. For real world, would you want a Giant sword or a normal sword for fighting a bear?
Its understandable why you have to keep reminding people of the whole premise of this list. Something as iconic as Wolverine's claws, which nearly EVERYBODY loves, only work with in cannon shenanigans. They want to see weapons like this place high because they are their favorites, not because of how practical they actually are in the real world.
I don't think the giant sword in the real world or not would be useful except against giant animals that have armor, like dragons or dinosaurs.
I'd move that Star Trek weapon to the B tier and the giant sword to the C tier because at least the Star Trek weapon is a practical weapon where as the giant sword is not
Goodhaircut, Tyranth.
Shad would throw any mall ninja weapon or looking weapon in the lowest category there is. Also I'm not a big fan of swords in sci-fi since they really don't have a use apart from Infiltrators. Lastly any weapon by it's universe is a pull it out of the ass why it works... BECAUSE IT'S COOL! Basically designed by mall ninja nerds. I was a mall ninja in my teens but then I found you and Shad and those days ended... I also got older and more thoughtful.
The real world equivalent of the whip sword would be the urumi?
That is fair Tier list.
It would not be bad to add F tier, for garbage weapons.
I don't know if commenting on lore is necessarily a criticism of you. Since you don't cover the subject, fans might just want to share why things are a certain way in the story, in case people don't know. But since you bring it up, I do often find myself confused by what "real world design" is supposed to mean. Like if you shrink a weapon design to make it work, then it seems like that means the original design doesn't work & you're testing a different design. Or making things out of aluminum that I'm positive are canonically steel. Surely that's a huge effect.
