    Airport security will let me take knitting needles on the plane; they may not let me take lethally sharp 6mm knitting needles. Most knitting needles are not sharp but rather blunt to prevent splitting the yarn while knitting. However, outside of airport security, most people would likely not give them a second look. Make them 4mm brushed stainless steel (and lost the ribs) and about 25 cm and you've got weapons that are unquestionably knitting needles, officer.

    In regards to the with handle and without handle inconsistency you mentioned, Yor has two different types of spikes. The smaller needles without handle are designed to imitate a traditional hair ornament to hold hair up. They're obviously a lot smaller and without a grip to look more convincing. She has other set with grips that are longer for use when the confrontation has escalated beyond stealth and Yor needs to engage in a much more direct conflict. There the larger ones have better reach and the handles provide her with a lot more control and leverage.

    I actually came up with a similar weapon for my fantasy setting called war needles. They are even nastier, as they are traditionally made from fire-hardened wood or bone, barbed, and then left to "cure" in dung or rotting flesh. The idea is that they are a weapon for assassination and violent resistance, easily concealed and likely to cause infection. Particularly skilled wielders can even break them off in the wound, making extraction even more tortuous.

    This weapon fit Yor well, she’s fast and agile but has incredible strength. She even wear these as a hair pin to be less conspicuous.
    Easy to conceal, fit with her quick and strong attack and is overall a good assassin weapon.
    In reality I can see some detractors like the lack of hand guard, your hand can slip up when you stab. The rings are good for control but can be a detriment if your fingers get caught in it in a awkward angle. Also, this weapon doesn’t have an edge so it’s limited to being a stabbing weapon.
    7.5 - 8 / 10 for a assassination weapon.

    When it comes to needles as weapons the first thought in my head is from the Tenchu game series where there is a character named "Tesshu" he's a doctor who uses traditional Japanese/Chinese medicine techniques...this includes acupuncture needles. He's actually based on a literary character named Baian and his main way of killing people he's paid to assassinate is using a slightly longer acupuncture needle and a leather ring on his finger to protect his finger from the pressure. His main way of doing it is usually to jam it into the brain through the ear after covering their mouth to keep any screams down as he tries to get them while they are asleep he also goes for the hollow in the base of the skull where the brainstem connects. Tesshu was my first time seeing needles used like that and then I later found out about his literary inspiration...sadly of the books written for Baian only two have been translated to English from the original Japanese even though it's a VERY old book series. He did get a Period Drama that's available subtitled on DVD however and he has shown up in other period dramas before...though none that I cane remember being brought over.

The one you're trying to recreate is her main weapon and the longer one, though as close as it can be I noticed that the grip is a little different. Her weapon actually has a very nice grip on them, like a spear grip.

  • @justanoman6497
    @justanoman6497 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Best I can tell, Yor's needles are a touch longer(almost reaching elbow in reverse grip) and the ring quite a bit smaller(not much more than fitting a thumb)
    I don't think there is "usually" a handle aside from the textured grip, but if time permits it could be possible to add wrapping to it, secured by threading through the ring..
    It is also possible that she have two sets--as many people noted, her hairpins seem to be such weapons. But she also carry them on her dress. So it is possible that the ones on her dress are larger and with grip while the hairpins are backup, smaller and without grip.
    But alas, those are probably things that only the artist can answer.

  • @mastafuji6941
    @mastafuji6941 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    In regards to the handle discussion, I thought that was what the ring part at the end was to solve. That type of design allows you to slot your thumb in there in various angles that allows for the grip/resistance needed for increased force. It doesn't outdo a normal handle in a straight forward stab but you can still angle those thrusts which would work. As for the icepicking/downward stab, the thumb slotted in the ring would be very much like having a dagger/rondel's handguard being the stopping point for the weapon from sliding out.

    Would you use these to act as meat skewers at a barbecue? Best concealable way to bring them around. Added some hot damage from the heat. And they could double to eat food with. Can pretend they’re just chopsticks too.

    • @seanmadson8524
      @seanmadson8524 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Funnily enough, (metal) meat skewers with the ring on the end work the same way these do when you throw them (I wouldn't recommend stabbing with them since they bend easily, but it can be done).
      They're also cheap and widely available, so you can get a lot for throwing practice if you want to try your hand at some no-spin, ninja-style throwing

  • @scorpionlord9175
    @scorpionlord9175 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    so for stabbing, the way i would personally hold it is sort of like a wolverine claw. i would have the ring firmly against my palm, with the actually needle out between one of my fingers and my hand clenched, that way there is no chance of my hand slipping down cause its against my palm, then when i pull it out it cant get away cause my hand is clenched and the ring will catch on the inside of my fingers.
    if im using it like an icepick, i would have my thumb through it all the way down to the base, my hand clenched on, again would preventing slipping down and pulling away.
    then, as many people mentioned, in the anime(which i suggest watching. im behind, but it is a FANTASTIC cartoon) she uses it as hairpins to keep her hair up. she also has them on her belt and up her sleeves when she is wearing long sleeves. but when she isnt wearing a shirt or a thing that requires a belt(think dress), she has her hair up and the needles in her hair to keep them up.
    these things are, overall, very easy to hide. there are longer ones in the anime it seems, but these are a good size.

    8:18 my thoughts before the final analysis has one additional con and pro.
    Con: the ring can damage a finger if not done properly since there isn't enough grip on the needle. Think karambit
    Pro: you can also use it with multiple or a single needle to make a rope dart or fan of daggers on a string. The amount of uts or blunt force trauma alone with sufficient skill will make a "knitting circle" very impactful.

    Not that it really impacts the results... but technically, the design in the anime does have a bit of a handle. Your build works well to get an idea of them, but technically is just a quick facsimile.
    1:20 - If you look at the actual design, the needle is a sharpened length of metal, with a ring that is forged from the same piece of metal.
    As for the handles, the three in the clip shown are slightly odd. The right most one is like yours, the grip area is the same diameter as the rod. But the left and middle needles have slightly raised handles.
    This means either the rod has been lathed down so the handle is slightly raised, or there is some sort of wrap applied. With the variation in colour, I'm inclined to believe it is some sort of wrap.
    Also, for the size of them... that scene is of her washing them in a sink. (One of those 'bowl on the counter' fancy sinks.) I mean, I could look up stuff to use the curvature and such to estimate the size of the sink... but I think we can all agree it is a large sink. Those are like 'long barbecue tongs' in size.
    Also, her needles are overall more than triple the length of the handle. Just from the forward point of the handle to the tip is over two handle lengths. With her forearm right there, it is reasonable to estimate that if she held it in reverse grip, the point should be near or slightly past her elbow. Also, her handles look to be bigger than her hand.
    Compared to yours at 3:00, which is a little hard to compare, since you have bigger hands than Yor. While your needles are about three of your handles in length, I suspect her handles would take up half of your needles.
    All I'm saying is that your version does a decent job of getting an idea of how useful they are... but is still slightly off.
    I think your needles are about 2/3 the length of hers, or maybe only 1/2 the length. I also believe she has properly raised handles, so the 'juices' would be less likely to be a problem. Still would be some, but not as much.
    I just wonder if hers might be less throw-able, since hers seem to actually be longer.

    One thing that I'd add is that you could use the rings as a make-shift blunt force weapon. It isn't great for the job depending on how they're constructed, but it would work. Just hold the needle down by the point and swing it. Speaking of which, I'm interested in seeing what Shad will think of these concealable pointy metal sticks.

    Suggestions: Yor's weapons have more of a handle, yes, but also a slimmer profile spike. There's variety in the anime but always a step-down profile. If made from steel you can heat the metal and then go over them with a brass wire wheel on a drill to brass coat the steel. Apparently, they were inspired by the stiletto from "Eye of the needle". She has her two main ones but also a wears a third. Her earings are small kunai. I'd be curious if they are heavy enough to baton with reasonable results.

      The ring end is popular in manga and anime because ninja throwing weapons traditionally have a ring at the base. None of creatives involved seem to understand that this was because you could supposedly tie a bit of cloth to the ring (not unlike the tail of a kite) to add a little bit of extra drag that would stabilize it to stay point on rather tumbling end over end.

    These are great and if you make them just a little bit longer you could openly carry them without fear of being stopped - or carry out your crime without anyone suspecting you.
    Let me explain.. Years ago I read a fiction book where the murders were carried out by an older woman using a simple knitting needle with a very sharp point. The really interesting part though was the epilogue where the writer stated she had based her story on a real life happening where an older contract killer had actually used a sharpened knitting needle - because older women can and do carry around a knitting bag without getting a second glance - to kill people [poked in through the ear for those interested, often leaves no sign of what killed them though as this was about 40-50 years ago that might have changed with modern detection methods]. That's all I know and she didn't give any more details so I have no idea when it happened or even where it happened. But if you really want to a successful assassin I suggest taking up knitting, NOTHING is more innocent than a half knitted jumper plus ball of wool and pair of needles. These are probably the most practical but also most deadly of weapons you could legitimately carry openly without being stopped. Fabulous.
    Great video as always, so glad I found your channel courtesy of Shad

    I know you covered it somewhat in the video, but I'd say Yor's weapons are slightly longer and have a form of grip. Even in the scenes you showed confirm that (although Im guessing those were added after your recording).
    I'd say that the grip itself on the anime/magna ones, make these 'needles' more unique and easier to recognize, but it is not outlandish for knitting needles to have a sort of grip, so I dont think they would be suspicious.
    Another thing is that Yor wears them sometimes as hair-accessories. Making them not just more covert, but with that she has an easy excuse to deny handing them over for examination: It would ruin her hair.

    Well you should know that the improvised assassin tool she uses is a Kanzashi or hair stick... So unlike assassin's creed hidden blade these actually make a lot more sense because you can hide them in plain sight. Additionally the anime is set in more modern times. So in most cases the majority of our targets won't be wearing armor.
    Likewise, you're dealing with a woman who's a highly skilled martial artist that also has the seek of an Olympic athlete. As such two Kanzashi are as lethal if not more so than two 9 mm handguns in her possession since the character very much lives in that John Wick with a pencil territory... the big difference here is the pointy thing she stab with her made of metal not wood. So I would say she's as strong as a combatant if not stronger than John Wick thanks to her Kanzashi.

But they look quite similar. I.e. both are "shortish" metal sticks with tip and a ring at the end which are used as hand Wappons and can hide in plain sight.
    (Also as an interesting side note: Kubotans are classified as weapons even forbidden (hidden) weapons in some countries. So if you want to have or even ware some Yor Needles it might be worth to check that first in case the Police classifies them as a Kubotan 🙈)

    Regarding the armor issue, I don't think it's a huge issue given the assassination context, since I'd expect most targets (and other assassins) to be wearing:
    1. No armor,
    2. Chainmail, which is light and knife-proof but the needles would easily get pass that, or
    3. Bullet-proof body armor, which still leaves a lot of things (e.g. neck) open for a little stabby stabby.
    Also, given Yor's strength and the pin-point damage nature of the weapon, getting through (most) solid armor may not even be very difficult for her.
