Seeing him on the first tour was life altering...
My first ever concert in 1991, age 18 - I saw him do this right in front of me, 23rd row on the floor. Talk about a great first band to see live (Alice In Chains opened so I guess they were technically though...). No one like Eddie...and that grin.
Not only was he playing with his eyes closed but he was also as close to sober as Pluto is to the Sun.

This isn't written down. It is complete mastery. Few people reach this level. He is literally channeling emotions through his music. This is like Jazz improv with Rock.
He couldn't afford effects pedals when he was a kid so he figured out how to make the guitar sounds by playing it different ways and building his guitars / messing with amps. A genius because of it.
Van Halen was the band name. Eddie Van Halen was the guitarist, and Alex Van Halen was his brother on the drums.
And it was David Lee Roth that said it'd be a cool idea to name the band after them

I'm 54 years young, I smoke. I been smoking since I was 17. But I am trying to quit. It's not easy after smoking for so many years, but trieing.

@@CaseyFraysier Fun Fact: The main riff was played by Steve Lukather (who also did bass) while Steve Porcaro played the synthesizer on it and Jeff Porcaro played drums. All of those mentioned were members of the band TOTO.

It's called Eruption, but every night he played it according to how he felt. I was lucky enough to be at The MSG back in 1984 when they played. No doubt one of the greatest EVERRR!

I couldn't agree with you more! Music education is lacking everywhere nowadays. It's been pretty much destroyed in the entire public school system everywhere... It's horrible that we have to depend on charity to get kids instruments and lessons. This stuff needs to be part of every school's budget mandate permanently.

I don't think anyone in the history of music said, "Look what I figured out" more often than Eddie. He was the mad genius of all mad geniuses.
Other recordings of Eruption will sound different, so there was definitely an element of improv each time he played it.
Edward...the absolute GOAT of all guitar players. He not only built his "Frankenstein" guitar from scraps, he help design a guitar named after his beloved Son Wolfgang. A true musical genius. I saw him live 4 times. Got chills each and every time watching him perform. 🤩

Eddie was a Legendary player. Mainly because he introduced techniques not used much or heard off on guitar. Finger tapping wasnt new but he made it a talent of its own. Also, harmonics was another that was used but he basically revolutionized. And he created his own guitar . Tweeked his amps to get the sound he wanted. I could go on and on..He was all guitar player. RIP Eddie

Eruption was a solo written for an album, BUT A lot of what he’s doing here is freestyle. Eddie had a solo every night and it was never the same. You really should check out the studio version of Erruption and you will recognize it In parts from this solo you just watched. And yes he is a musical super genius. There will never be another Eddie. RIP Eddie keep smiling!

@@leebassa1545 Most of this solo isn't free-style (improv). Eruption, Spanish Fly, Cathedral, the intro to Mean Street ...are all large portions of what he's fused together here. I saw them twice on the Diver-Down tour and once for the 1984 tour and his solos were mostly repeats from show to show, which to me is way more impressive than just standing there spacing out, playing whatever for 15 minutes.
Still looking for clips of the solos I saw him do. He did stuff I've never seen in any of the more popular youtube vids of him. For instance, in the middle of his solos back then there was a point (i hope i describe this correctly) where he moved his guitar into a position where it was oriented "lap-style" and he played it overhanded, like a piano, with 8 fingers doing hammer-ons/offs, piano-style, and every note coming through loud and clear.

Edward responded, nothing I'm just warming up. Ted then says, we have to put that on the album! Eruption was born. Shred in piece! EVH

His son Wolfgang said he wanted to learn to play the guitar and he wanted his dad to teach him. He said it would start out ok, but after like five minutes his dad would go all Eddie Van Halen and shit on the guitar and he'd be like ok dad! You can tell Eddie loved what he did. Still hard to think of him in the past tense.
Eddie was not only a great guitar natural talent, he experimented with sounds, like the tapping the back of the neck to get a different sound. He once used a drill against the fretboard. He was like a mad scientist guitar genius. The world lost the greatest guitar player it has ever seen when Eddie went home. I like to think that God wanted to hear a good guitar solo and knew who to call to get it.
And he never "cheated" the fingering. There are no blurred sounds, no sliding of the fingers. His sound is precise and clear and perfect.
Fun fact: Early in Van Halen's career, when they were still playing in the clubs, Eddie would do his solos with his back turned to the audience so as not to give away the tricks and methods he used.

@@spiff2268 I think I read that somewhere and that his brother Alex Van Halen was the one to suggest that because in those days everyone would steal ummmm I mean copy someone else tricks late 70's early 80's were some competative days consider they were following Led Zepplin Jimi Hendrix Janicice Joplin Lynyrd Skynard and on and on. Your tricks of the trade were your everything but noone could of even come close to his fingers other than Hendrix but.......

Crazy thing about Eddie is I saw an interview he did just a few years ago and he said he did not even know how to read music. He basically wrote everything and created his solos by just playing and by ear. One song you may be more familiar with is "Beat It" by Michael Jackson. Not sure if you know but the solo in that song was done by Eddie as a favor to Michael and his producer Quincy Jones. In the interview Eddie said he did it in one take and they all loved it. His brother Alex who plays drums is actually a very talented guy as well and can play guitar too.

Eddie Van Halen is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished guitar players in rock music history. In 1972, he co-founded Van Halen with his brother and appeared in the band as the primary songwriter and guitarist. He had played actively with the band since 1972 and produced several commercially successful albums.
Eddie inspired many musicians, collaborated with renowned artists, and popularized the two-hand tapping guitar solo technique. His collaborations featured Gene Simmons, Brian May, Sammy Hagar, Black Sabbath, Roger Waters, and many more.
On October 6, 2020, Eddie saddened the rock music scene with his tragic death after his battle with cancer, which lasted over four years. Following his death, Van Halen could not continue without him and disbanded. However, the fans and rock world still cherish and preserve Eddie’s legacy, and stories from his career influence the readers. Some of them are hard to believe though, like the one claiming Eddie never learned to read music.
EDDIE VAN HALEN’S PIANO TEACHER MIGHT BE THE REASON HE COULD NOT READ MUSIC

When Eddie was still a child, he learned to play the piano starting at the age of six with his brother Alex. Eddie’s father was a jazz pianist and encouraged his sons to learn the piano. So, his interest in playing music started with a classical instrument rather than with drums or guitar.
In an interview by Rolling Stones, Eddie recalled those days. He said that his father found a Russian piano teacher to teach them how to play the piano. The teacher did not know English, and the language barrier between them might be why Eddie could not learn how to read music.
Moreover, Eddie claimed he fooled his teacher and everyone who listened to him for six years as he didn’t learn but just watched the teacher’s fingers before playing the piano. Eddie also revealed in the same interview that he never learned how to read music. He argued that his musical talent might be rooted in his gift for music and claimed he just had good ears back then.
In the interview with Rolling Stone, Eddie confirmed his musical talent is entirely natural:
“I think I have a gift. Things come easy, but then again, I’ve got to work at it, too. But at an early age, it was obvious that I had really good ears because I never learned how to read music.”
The interviewer asked him if he still hasn’t, and Eddie responded:
“No, and I fooled my teacher for six years. He never knew I couldn’t read. I’d watch his fingers, and I’d play it.”
Eddie won first place in a piano competition at Long Beach City College three years in a row, despite not reading music. Contrary to what his family expected, Eddie then shifted towards rock music and learned to play the electric guitar. Thanks to his growing interest in rock music back then, he became the iconic guitarist of Van Halen.

To see your reaction to his talent, at your age, enjoy this warms my heart. He was an epic guitarist and if the guitar did not do what he wanted it to do, he MADE it happen. I absolutely love watching you explore all this great rock talent, way out of your age group, and probably genre of music that young men/women of your age listen to is so gratifying. Keep exploring, there are SO many, too many for me to name, groups out there worthy of a good listen but just keep listening! Back in the day when I grew up, I’m 55, you could either sing, or not….no auto tunes, no synthesizers, nothing to help. You got what you got on the radio, same as it was live in concert. Welcome to the wonderful world and works of Van Halen!! Start with their first album, Van Halen I and work through each one. You will not be dissatisfied. I first heard Eruption on the radio in 1981 as an 11-year-old and it was over after that. I begged and pleaded for my parents to buy any VH material I could listen to. I shoveled snow, got a paper route, lied, cheated, and stole. Anything to feed my thirst. The rest is history and I’ve never been disappointed until their last album. Nobody’s perfect right?

Yeah I think Steve Lukather said Ed was supposed to do the whole record but something happened and Steve did all the rest of the guitar work on that record.
He did solo for "Beat it" as a favor to Quincy Jones, didnt get paid for it, or take any writing credits. Took 2 takes and 30 min to record it. One of the reasons he didn't want writing credit is because the agreement in his band was no outside projects. As you can imagine as soon as everyone heard the solo, they knew exactly who was playing it.

The entire piece is comprised of some of his most famous song solos,what’s really great is how he is able to stitch them together in such a coherent fashion.
Seeing this performance live in person was phenomenal. Witnessed it a few times. Took my breath away. Music just isn't the same. 🎵🎸

He and his brother Alex where classically trained pianist from a very young age. His father was a professional clarinet player as well. His brother Alex orginally played guitar and Eddie started on drums. As teens they switched instruments.
He wrote his solos and did a bit of free styles every night was the same solo except for a few small bits. He first came on the scene in 78 and influenced every guitarists since RIP ED.

Yes Jojo, Eddie wrote the solo. The solo is a string of his instrumentals from over the years with a little improv thrown in between. He is amazing! Will be missed!! Love watching your reactions!

He played that same solo every night and it was amazing every time. And that whole piece is a combination of a few pieces he wrote. It was so great to watch your reactions. "Initially, "Eruption" was not considered as a track for the Van Halen album as it was just a guitar solo Eddie performed live in the clubs. But Ted Templeman overheard it in the studio as Eddie was rehearsing it for a club date at the Whisky a Go Go and decided to include it on the album. Eddie recalled, "I didn't even play it right. There's a mistake at the top end of it. To this day, whenever I hear it, I always think, 'Man, I could've played it better.'"

Correct, and originally he did it as a warm up (I read he said this somewhere, but I can't remember). I remember seeing them at Gazzarri's in 75 or there abouts. Man I miss those days. RIP King Edward.
"I could have played it better". That's such an Eddie thing to say. He probably listened to this very performance and said the same thing. He was always his own worst critic.
When you see someone experiencing Eddie for the first time, you realize how lucky we as rock fans were to see and hear him throughout the years. “What. The. Fuck?” Is the only appropriate reaction for most of the stuff that man could do with a guitar.

Eddie was a classically trained musician, piano in particular. You can hear Bach influence in his solo. So yes, he was doing improvisation but he had a rich background to draw from - amazing!

Loving your reaction man, Eddie was a phenomenal talent, he started on piano then went to drums and his brother Alex was on guitar, they swapped and the rest is history.... to get this good takes hours of practise EVERY day for years and years. Although the tapping on the strings had been done before, Eddie took it to the next level and beyond. A true innovator on electric guitar. Ya it was a Christmas gift from their dad. But they switched after getting them and playing for awhile. They still had Dutch accents and music was their way of fitting in.

He built the guitar and called it Frankenstein. If you notice in one part the sounds he was making were from him turning the volume knob up and down w his right hand while playing w his left hand. And he was always smiling. He didnt know how to read music. Listen to Michael Jackson's Beat It...Eddie did the guitar riff for free!!
Yes he did build the Frankenstein, but this is not it. This guitar is one of many made for him by Kramer for this tour. It's the 5150 model

Eddie is the guitarist and his brother Alex is on the drums. Van Halen is their family's last name.
Also, later on, Eddie's son is the bass player. Truly a family business.
There's a point in any proficient musician's career where he/she becomes so familiar with their instrument that it becomes a part of you. Your instrument may as well be another appendage that you have full control of, enough to create any sound you hear inside your head. Many a guitar player have reach that threshold, but Eddie isn't just a guitarist. For a guitarist to create such a symphony, he must hear it in his head. Eddie Van Halen isn't just an astounding guitar player, he's a musical genius. He's up there with Beethoven.

Hey man, did you know Eddie created that guitars sound... also in my world Eddie's guitar there has a name. It's called the Frankenstrat.... The guitar was burried with his friend Dimebag Darell many yrs ago.

The "voice singing" part is called volume swells. It makes the guitar sound like a violin. Eddie could do all kinds of tricks and he had a great sound that he made on his own.
Eddie is the GOAT. And keep in mind that part of this lengthy solo is "Eruption" from their debut album in 1978 when he was only 23 years old. Over 40 years later, and its still mind-blowing!
He built that guitar so it would sound the way he wanted it to, he also invented most of the techniques he was using. A true virtuoso on the guitar.
