Tree Stumps, Your Number is Up! | Woodland Mills WG24 Stump Grinder Unboxing and Setup

  • The trifecta of woodlot owner equipment is now complete! I've added the Woodland Mills WG24 stump grinder to my inventory of equipment after dulling chain after chain on my chainsaw and struggling to use my tractor implements for such jobs. With the addition of this PTO stump grinder, I'll be able to take care of the hundreds of stumps that riddle my land and smooth the way for nice trails. Not to mention the improvement in safety that the removal of the stumps will provide by eliminating the chance for my snow machines to hit the stumps or my tractor to drive up on top of a stump and tip over. It's a win-win situation with the stump grinder here to stay. Today I"l show you exactly what the stump grinder ships in and how you set it up from Woodland Mills. A nice thing about these units are that they come nearly 100% assembled so just a matter of getting the last few bits setup and the PTO shaft installed and I"m making wood chips. Glad you're all along for the ride today. Here we go!
    Woodland Mills WG24 Stump Grinder woodlandmills.ca/wg-24-stump-...
    Tractor I'm using in this video is my 2012 Kioti DK40se HST (32 pto hp, 40 engine hp)

    I have had the same model for five years now. This thing is great! No more annoying stumps to mow around. One bit of advise, Don't let your neighbors know you have a stump grinder as they all have "one" they want gone. But after the video it may be to late. The only thing I have had to to is replace one bit. The next spring project is replacing the two bearings on the cutting wheel. The grease zerks have stripped out. Lower quality metal. Not a big thing as I have ground out over 100 oak stumps so far. Most were 14 inch's and a dozen over two feet across.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  ปีที่แล้ว

      hahah thanks for that tip Stuart! Great to hear that the grinder has worked out well for ya.

    I purchased one of those last year and love it. Woodland mills makes really great products. I've done around twelve stumps so far all of them hardwoods. There is definitely a learning curve with different size stumpsbut the more you use it the better you will get.

    It sure would be nice if you could have a camera mounted underneath...like you did..but then have that transmitting to a tablet in the cab of the tractor!!! Glad you got a new toy...now you have to show why you would do the grinding vs digging it up with the excavator you got!!!

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be pretty slick. Would give a great view of what's happening down tehre without having to turn back and look all the time. I'll be sure to get the mini ex out to see what does better with the stumps. I'm thinking this will be faster since my mini ex isn't that big

  • @brianhildom9372
    @brianhildom9372 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You will have fun with that. I've had mine for a few years, done over a 100 stumps. Clearing my dead ash trees. Rotate the higher up teeth into the lower portion of the wheel as they wear, saves on teeth replacing. There is a sweet spot on the wheel that they want you to use, prevents jumping around. Keep your three point arms tight. Good luck enjoy 😉

    Sandy You're killing me! I'm going to go broke watching your channel. I already have a WC68, Just about to pull the trigger on a HM130MAX, now it looks like I can't live without a WG24. I got turned onto Woodland Mills from your channel and I have to say that I have had an absolute blast using my WC68 Wood Chipper at my U.P. Michigan property as well as at my home in SE Michigan. It was packaged really well and the instructions were straightforward and easy to read. Looks like the same was true with the WG24. Just kidding about going broke. The WC68 has already paid for itself and the other equipment will do the same. Great video as always.

    Hey Sandy, I've been watching a lot of your videos in the last year or so, and I really enjoy the simplicity of everything you do. So I'm watching you unpack this stump grinder which by the way is a really cool piece of equipment to have, and a thought occurred to me. What I would have done, and I know this seems simple, but I would have taken that frame that you pulled off the stump grinder set it on the ground cut a couple pieces of cardboard to go across it that was already laying there and make yourself a table to organize everything so you're not bent over picking up stuff and having pieces all over the place. That's just me I like a work table and you had it all sitting right in front of you. Come on man. Lol. I'm just messing with you. Thanks for sharing.

    Thanks for the video Sandy! I have both the grinder and the chipper. Both work great! I do not have a hydrostatic drive and the clutch and low gear really get a workout. Definitely don’t recommend using the grinder without a hydrostatic drive. I want to trade in one of my two tractors to a hydrostatic with a lift, then get the sawmill. I’m retired now and have 40+acres and the trees that get blown down would keep me busy sawing them up. Love your channel and love the information you give.

    Howdy Sandy. Great video as always. I have the same grinder, but it’s still in the crate in my shop. I bought it and the WC68 chipper at the same time a few weeks ago, and just got the chipper going today (first time cutting down a PTO shaft for me). Love the chipper, and the WM quality, so I’m confident that grinder will work well too. Appreciate the vid on assembly, especially adjusting the slip clutch which I’ve yet to do. I’ve probably got about half as many stumps to work on as you, but that’s still a lot. I don’t have a mill yet, but the 130Max Woodlander will probably find it’s way here in a few months. I really appreciate your videos with their upbeat and detailed tips. Keep up the great work!

    Sandy, I have the stump grinder as. Good machine, I have done some 48" stumps of oak and it handled it quite well.
    Now a word of wisdom for you. In your video, you had a camera mounted under the tractor looking at the grinder. You well want to get a camera mounted in the same exact spot with a monitor in your cab.
    Your back and neck will thank you! The hardest part of grinding is the turning around to watch.
    My question to you is where did you mount your camera to? I need to move mine in the same spot because it was a perfect spot.
    ThankCam

      I live in Oregon. I bought the house I'm in now 3 year's ago. The previous owners had the property close to the house logged after 2 trees hit the house during a storm in '12. They didn't remove any stumps. Some are 36" across...but most about 24". Do you think this grinder is up to the task?

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it would work for sure just be a slow process depending on the size of the tractor. Keeping the teeth sharp though I’d imagine it would do the trick

  • @RCPSU4

    I do see a lot of people running this grinder, plus the Baumalight 1p24 competitor. While looking at this objectively, I think both grinders are good fits for compact/subcompact tractors. I'd like to see them develop a grinder to compete with their 3p24 model.

    Stumps are never fun to mess with, I have found I can dig them out with my frontend loader, But I still have a stump to mess with, and a hole to smooth out ,I stack them up and just let them riot.

    Sandy,
    I have had this same stump grinder for years. It works very well.
    When I assembled mine, I put the bolts for the deflector up from the bottom because I figured the dirt would damage the treads and make replacement harder.
    Good to see you read the manual and adjusted your clutch. I can't say I did the same. I learned something from this video. Looks like maintenance is in order before I run mine again.

    • @sawingwithsandy

    looks like a nice machine been looking at one too. I used to grind stumps working for a tree service and I would try coming at the stump more from the side not from the top the fibers will tear easier that way. so your first pass would start with the bottom of your wheel 8 to 10 inches or more depending on stump size to the side of the stump. just something to try I've never used that type of grinder so it may or may not work??

    Hey, Sandy! Woodland Mill must love you!! Seriously, one thing I've noticed with all your equipment - not to mention your tour of their plant - is the overall quality of their product. That stump grinder looks... ROBUST! Just one question.... WHY didn't you pull those stumps with your new excavator?!?!?! Take care, buddy.............

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Carl! Great to have ya checking out this new video. Since I've got so many stumps (hundreds) and my mini ex is so small I figured this would be faster than the mini excavator and also make it so I don't have to dispose of the stumps after if I were to dig them out.

    • @sawingwithsandy
      @sawingwithsandy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Paul! Yeah I just stuck to driving forward as there is a part of the stump grinder that will give a little if something solid is hit while moving forward but if moving backwards there isn't that feature. It's like a flip up design when driving forward.
