      I think it’s ironic that because of something Dave Portnoy said in the past is held against him, but when people dig up dirt on Sam Ponder or Sarah Spain, they say that they’ve grown and changed since then. Isn’t that a bit hypocritical?

    I guess those judges conveniently forgot the part of the Bible where Jesus stopped a bunch of men from stoning a woman who was guilty of the same crime.

    • @dashrocks100
      @dashrocks100 7 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      You don’t know how many comments I read looking for one person to bring this up! Did we just conveniently forget that happened. Plus, these idea Philip brings up come from the old testimony but really Christians follow the New Testament, Jesus teachings. One being no you cannot kill someone for sins because everyone even the worst criminal deserves redemption. People miss this key idea in Christianity and think we hate and condemn everyone. If we did them no one would make it because we all fall short of the glory of God. Just thank you for bringing this up!

    • @Careline77
      @Careline77 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Exactly! Finally someone brought that up! With doing so Jesus abolished the stoning law. This because we are all full of sin and should not judge others.
      Second? Wasn't the law separated from the Bible in The Trias Politica? Separation of church and state? I know I'm not saying it entirely correctly, but hey English is not my first lenguage.
      I hope this case continues and that the lady gets justice and those judges loose their jobs. Bunch of Wanna be Christians! He tried to murder her! That's even worse than adultery! I don't understand their common sense.
      To me this smells like angry judges who has been cheating on and still hold grudges against cheaters.

      Darrell Hutchison Dude. No one writes the play book based on the mascots actions. Just as every hero has their leader Jesus didnt actually make the rules. The Bible isnt a manifesto written by Jesus. Its a compounded religious text. Jesus at the time was a criminal and an anarchist. He attacked the tax collectors and smashed their stalls and tables and threw their things out into the street and or public courtyard from within the temple. If we learnt anything from the Hero Known as Jesus Christ we learnt that is not cool. He acted in an illegal manner in reaction, due to something someone else was doing being against his personal beliefs. Jesus if he tried to stop someone legally stoning someone became a complete hypocritical person for a moment after telling people to follow the law then breaking the law then stopping someone following the law from punishing someone whom wasnt following the law. People forget that if your wife cheats whilst you are married and gets pregnant you are financially responsible and in most places she can put your name on the birth cert. Then the actual father has rights also so can also apply to be listed and have access. So next thing you are paying to keep some other guys girlfriend and kid even if they dont live with you but with the dad! So yeah why arent forced abortions a punishment for adultery? Since abortions are a right and available. We could use feelings and beliefs to say "No forced abortions are bad". But the next guy will tell you all abortions are bad then he next will say no stoning would be fairer or jail or forced labor. All things already used for thieves rapists murderers etc. Belief and feeling dont work when deciding how to put a barrier between a person an action and causing others offence or hurt. Like we lock up rapists and execute serial killers and terrorists. But they only hurt a few people 99%+ of society was unaffected. I think everyone knows someone who was cheated on or a cheater or have done so ourselves. Many many people have committed crimes done stupid thing or even committed suicide due to cheating and cheaters. So if we do the maths cheating causes more damage to men women children property society and more. Psycho killers terrorists and rapists kill a few people normally in a packed public place or assault one person in an out of the way place causing little harm over all and zero harm to anyone else. So cheating is worse over all than the worst of the worst crimes regularly leading to the worst of the worst crimes. We ban certain drugs for the subsequent consequences. We punish people who get caught with drugs under the assumption that drugs cause societal harm. We know a guy high on crack is trouble. Just the same as I know sleeping with someone elses wife is trouble. Both lead to bad situations and reactions. So I dont smoke crack or sleep with other people's wives. BUT. Most people would hold an occasional crack smoker (not a crackhead regular user) in higher regard than a person who makes a habit of sleepng with married people. Your few moments of pleasure can and will ruin many lives. It should have always been illegal if you signed a marriage certificate. Maybe not a beating but something relevant that actually deters people. Being stoned or stoned to death is just about enough to make it too scary too cheat. But saying no chocolate for a week wouldnt stop anyone. So with that all figured under current standards of law cheaters should be shot into the sun and erased from the history books. The only thing up in the damaging society ranks that can compete with cheating is genocide and mass destruction, both of which are mutually exclusive.

    As portuguese citizen, this news left me speechless when I read it.
    I saw this a couple of days ago on r/Portugal and my reaction was “wtf?! It’s 2017 and this is a judge ruling?”. Also, keep in mind that this was a judge, not a jury. On reddit, all I saw was disappointment that this appended in our country, and people making fun of the jury. I never thought this could happen in Portugal. Specially since I think of my country as a modern one and always forward with change. But lately I’ve come to realize that, even though our society is like that, a lot of people in power aren’t. Hopefully that will be a change in our future

      deafpool religion should not be influential over anything but one's way of life. I'm not religious but I respect having a religion. Pray, go to church, fine, but don't implement it in court. Religions are representations of faith, therefore, the content of holy books should not be put into consideration when dealing with facts and law.

      I too agree that the state should have no authority in regulating the Church. Separation of church and state has nothing to do with religion influencing or even leading the state though. And i would say that the more atheist and secular a state the more corrupt and destructive a state is,

    • @dipgrizzly25
      @dipgrizzly25 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I don't mean it in the sense of our constitution. I mean it literally, Religion shouldn't be in government, and government shouldn't govern religion. It's fine to be religious, personal choice. However, policy/judgment shouldn't be crafted based on religious belief. Policy/judgment should be based on logic and what is known. Also, what proof do you have to support Atheism=corruption and destruction. What about agnostics? They evil too? Religion has done its fair share of damage, so its a bit misleading to represent half an argument.

    I'm not religious but Jesus stopped a woman accused of adultery from being stoned. Yes biblical law says a woman should be stoned for adultery but it also says Jesus brought the higher law and Jesus says not to stone. Not only should the Bible not be used in legal decisions, they didn't even look at the whole Bible. That guy should be in prison for a long time.

    • @benthrasher9739

      @JulesFox 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably important for those who don't know, that the New Testament is Jesus' reforming of the laws of God. The Old and New testaments of the Bible are the known summarised history of the area (and or people), at the time. Stoning for adultery was (as shown) not accepted by Jesus, as he was demonstrating the acts of forgiveness and mercy.
      In other words, what some people consider acceptable today was rejected by Jesus, 2000 years ago.

Everyone is going crazy because of this, also it's not the first time he has done something like this. He will most likely be fired and sued or even prosecuted. If memory serves me right women who have similar law related jobs are also protesting this. Please don't think that our country supports this. It's only a handful of very stupid people who should be fired, Portugal 100% supports equality, he won't go unpunished.

      You guys act as if Barstool isn't just limping away from this. They might not 'need' ESPN, but that crossover would have been nothing but good for them. Why would they have signed on in the first place if they didn't need them? This is the Jake Paul/Disney story all over again where the small time creator is trying to claim they don't 'need' whatever, but it's clear the corporation isn't going to hurt nearly as badly as the little fish in the long term. That's literally the price of play politics in business.

    ESPN avoiding controversy is exactly why games need multiple outlets instead of just one channel or website. The thing about monopolies like sports channels is that they'll try to appeal to everyone which will ultimately hurt the product. Also the fact that there are multiple sports channels doesn't mean ESPN isn't a monopoly since they exclusively air whatever game is happening.

      Humans can survive a lot worse. People die way too easely in shows and movies, I think thats why so many people are confused when a little girl survive being shot 6 times (two in the face) or a stewardess survive falling off 10 000 feets or a guy get struck by lightning 7 times in his life and suffer no real permanent damage from it.
      In general, as long as your vital organs are fine, you're fine too. Bleeding out takes a pretty long time so long as no artery is severed. People can get stabbed hundred of times (once again, thats not a figure of speech, that happens all the time) and still be fine. Cause we happen to have those things called bones that are frigging harder then steel. I'm sure you played zombie games where you exploded zombie's head with a bat but let me tell you, the bat will break long before the human skull does (altough obviously a living human might have to worry about concussions.)

      Yeahboi that was Old Testament, to quote from the Bible I think it was John actually nvm I don’t wanna do the quote but Jesus said something along the lines of (talking to people who want to stone an adulterous woman) let the person who has committed no sin cast the first stone. This shows that it is wrong to kill a woman for sinning

    As a Portuguese, I am glad you talked about the fires, and I am also glad you talked about the wife beater. Truth is, this is NOT OK or STANDARD in Portugal, this was some very simple minded judge that did not follow the progress of the country. I am glad you speak of this because the more people we can get speaking about this, the better we can address the situation. Lawyers in Portugal should be ashamed of this decision, and the Judge behind it should be punished by being fired or charged for wrongful conduct.

    Well, first of all this is awkward. Outrageous move by the Portuguese judge, the majority of the Portuguese people are against his move and I clearly understand it. Even other judges and college teachers have come forward and said they were also against this decision. Its sad to see people like these still exist.
    Now, the interesting part is that my mother dated this guy for 2 years when they were younger. At the end she broke up with him basically because he was very harsh and rude torwards her and the others. They were together in the same church having catechesis classes, and he showed no love for the religion nor will to learn it. He always wanted to leave the classes as fast as he could because he was bored and didnt want to listen no more to what he thought was 'bullshit'. Its interesting now seeing him using Bible references to justify domestic violence, knowing that a few years back he couldnt tollerate the religious 'bullshit'. My mother also says that he was very agressive when talking to others and always had that mentality of superiority. He also likes to take potshots and hide or blame it on others, which is very coward.
    Sad to see a man like this in the upper law jobs here in Portugal.
    Just wanted to throw this out there so you can know a bit more about this guy.

    ESPN is like 98% of any other business Fck anything but making money. I find it a utter miracle more stuff like this does not come out more. As I am sure most of every company real is not doing their homework on what company they buy or partner with. Just bottom line $ and cents. To think or expect otherwise is ignorant or unaware. If people do not like it do not complain do not has tag it boycott and use your dollars to make a point, period. I have hated ESPN when they shat on all the original cast that built them and how they screwed my boy Bill Simmons. How someone can beat someone with a bat with nails in it and not get 10+ years MINIMUM 5 years is utterly sickening. As for the photo guru Terry Richardson, hopefully more companies speak out, but again this is on the models to complain and file charges, and for the public to remove head from stand and vote with their wallet.

      The only problem with "Fck anything but making money" & "Just bottom line $ and cents" is this model is not profitable with what they are doing.
      Marketing makes the world go round. The average age for the "marketing demographic" or those who are most likely to buy things like tech, clothing, etc (because they typically have no kids or other things to be financially responsible for) is 16 - 35-year-olds.
      "From a survey of 25,000 American consumers, the firm found that those ages 18 to 34 make up 43% of the so-called cordless population. " (www.mediapost.com/publications/article/293911/30-of-millennials-have-snipped-the-cord.html)
      Without views, they get no money and every year that age range of 16-35 yo continues to grow with people who are not going to get cable or other such things. My son is 8 and is completely uninterested in television. He watches TH-cam, Netflix, and other such things. If ESPN and other networks don't get their heads out of their asses death is knocking on their door.
      They are taking a page out of the music and video rental industries books. "Don't adjust our business model to changing times, we will be fine."

    As someone who has studied religions before, clearly those judges don't understand their own religion. The punishment for adultery (and similarly almost every other crime in the Old Testament) was severe, but also replaced with Christian values of mercy in the New Testament. So using the Bible like that is actually very anti-Christian.

    • @rubenvandermarel9924

      Literally to show why Jesus was needed. The Old Testament is mostly an account of what was happening at the time, the new Testament is the actual christian bit (what with the whole "spreading the word of Christ thing"). It's all well and good to give people a list of shit they shouldn't do, but without an explanation as to why it's bad they're gonna be like "but why though?" This applies to modern situations as well, people asking for communism who haven't lived in communist states, people doing drugs because they don't know how much their lives can be ruined by them. It's always more effective to show people why something is wrong than to just tell them it's wrong.

      ...Then again Jesus says you're a liar.

    • @taestott
      @taestott 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ruben van der Marel The Old Testament and the Law of Moses is the Law of Death. The New Testament with Christ is the Law of Life. You can't know life without death. If you just chucked out the Old Testament you wouldn't understand the importance of the New Testament. The equivalent would be like chucking out the 1st chapter of a book if the 2nd chapter resolves the plot of the 1st.
      EDIT: I should also throw in that not everything was replaced. A lot of the commandments and teachings from the Old Testament still apply in the New Testament. The punishments never went away, it's more that the Atonement of Christ fulfilled those punishments allowing for mercy to replace justice.
      That's why things like burnt offerings were common and commanded throughout the Old Testament to symbolize Christ, but in the New Testament that was replaced once the actual sacrifice was made.

I belive the amnesty international is taking charge in this matter.

      When half the women in this industry sleep their way to the top because they want to further their career it really casts doubt over everything as a whole. Of course instances like sexual assault or forcing yourself on someone is wrong but it seems a lot of these people coming out put up with this from some producers and photographers and yet had a problem with others.

      With each predator we expose, more and more people are freed from the burden of having to work with them. While it may not seem like much, it means the world to the young men and women who they have abused (or would have abused if they weren't exposed at all). Even seemingly small victories can make a big difference here.

    As a Christian, it bothers me when they use the bible as an excuse to make domestic abuse acceptable. Even using the bible as their reasoning is still an invalid excuse from a Christian standard. This verse is from the Old Testament. Any bible believing Christian will tell you that unless a law was reiterated in the New Testament, it’s accepted as history, not a law for Christians. @ kagutsuch969: This is just my opinion, but when Jesus said he came to fulfill them, he meant that the law was not finished. So when Christ died, the law has been fulfilled; finished. For example, lets just say two people are dating. They are not married. Once they are married, their dating life is fulfilled. No longer are they are dating, but they are now husband and wife.

    As a Christian, Portugal using Old Testament law to avoid their duty to justice and the protection of women is disturbing.
    In John 8, the religious leaders of the day caught a woman in adultery and brought her to Jesus to try and trap him in a difficult situation. They said, “Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” After a moment Jesus replied, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” No one did, and one by one they left. Once they were gone, Jesus said, “ Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, Lord,” she replied. “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
    Definitely sounds like grounds to claim being beaten with a nail-studded bat is “biblical.” 🙄
    1 Peter 3 literally says that if a man doesn’t live with his wife in an understanding way and give her honor his prayers won’t be heard by God. Abuse is taken seriously by God.
    Even if that man gets away with something so horrific and justice isn’t served here on earth, he’ll have to answer for his crimes before THE Judge one day. I don’t envy him that one bit.

      actually, religion is an influence in the justice system. The christian notion that you don't need to extract justice in full probably helped the shift away from eye-for-an-eye codes of justice (more about vengeance). In american justice, this is reflected by the notion that punishment needs to serve a purpose to avoid simply being cruelty. And while a lot of justice systems might take the old testament path (stonings, etc), others might draw from more positive bits of religion (eg. the notion that people can change).

    I have two things to address. 1. If a man can beat a woman for cheating on him, can a woman also beat her husband for the same humiliating act? Not condoning it just wondering how this is fair and just and why is it just aimed at women. Adultery is awful, but no one deserves that. 2. Now that females are taking down sexual harassment can Hollywood start focusing on all the pedophilia? Children have no voice or way to protect themselves, yet through all of this no one has spoken out for the kids dealing with this. Hollywood is filled with registered pedophiles and no one cares, why? Look it up, it's horrifically sad and equally unacceptable!

And as the tons of denominations goes to show, even Christians argue about interpretation.

      Portugal also has separation between church and state. The problem was this: the judges were horrible assholes, plain and simple. They shouldn't be allowed to judge if they are making sentences like these.
      And now those at the top can't do a thing about it because one of the biggest problems in this situation is that in order to appeal the decision there will be A LOT of bureaucracy since the courts are somewhat independent.
      There's a reason why even religious people in Portugal - that exist less and less - are shaking their head in desbelief at the situation: it shouldn't happen at all.

    I'm Portuguese, so please hear me out:
    I've seen NOBODY agree with this judicial decision. It's laughing matter across discussions. Not even conservatives support this decision and one of the biggest concerns in the media is what kind of picture does this paint of Portugal to Europe and the world. So I'm here to try and give you a better understanding of our cultural values. Although the Catholic Church is very much rooted in our lives most people (especially young people) are either secular Christians or atheists. This is unprecedented in XXI and XX century Portugal history and should be treated as a bizarre outlier instead of an example of Portuguese Law and culture. For example, I was myself subjected to Catholic teaching when I was young and I certainly feel like the norm being an outspoken atheist now. At least in the bigger cities, defending anything resembling Church-bound political ideas is very heavily shunned upon, ridiculed and may even spark public outrage. The only reason this case hasn't is that #1 Portuguese don't usually become publicly outraged, like most Southern and Central Europeans do, #2 people are struggling to understand if this is real/nobody really sees this as relevant because wtf it sounds like the setup for a joke... Except for, of course, feminist groups who use this as "proof" that a fight for women's rights is still very much needed in Portugal. Domestic Violence really is a problem and chauvinists are disseminated everywhere, like in all countries, but it IS publicly discussed and a man will get lifetime shame if anyone discovers he's been beating his wife. Even male victims of domestic violence are starting to get mainstream media attention - female aggressors are the ones being systematically pardoned by our culture and even judicial system. This domestic violence theme is becoming less and less of a taboo. I'm ashamed by this case and hope the judicial system eventually solves this jaw-dropping case and the Portuguese judge general ethos and pathos are not hurt in the public sphere - many intellectually honest and otherwise great people fill that role everyday and a drop in public trust would severely disservice their efforts.

    I want to be as tolerant of religion as I used to be but the older I get, the more disgusted I am with the things that people are willing to be lenient of in the name of religion. It's an overly abused excuse and it's frankly fucking disgusting. Whether it's the hindi caste system or abrahamic violence it's so utterly repugnant that I get more and more bitter and struggle harder and harder to have an open mind or not let the bad color my perception of people when they talk about their religion. It's a hard fight to not be the bitter douchebag atheist to people who don't deserve it.

    I just love it when people use the Bible as an excuse for ones actions. If you take the Bible’s word as law then you’re also saying that slavery is something that we should bring back because Exodus 21, Deuteronomy 15, and Leviticus 25 all talk about the laws governing buying, owning, and selling slaves.

      I mean I can just imagine Jesus preaching men to beat their cheating wives with baseball bats...with nails. Seems exactly like his philosophy. You can't have it both ways people

      Both the biblical laws mentioned by the judges and myself are from the old testament which is a lot more violent portraying God as this being to be feared not so much as this loving entity. The New Testament is when God became the loving and caring being. But I agree Jesus taught people to turn the other cheek not beat someone up because they were unfaithful, thats the exact opposite of what the bible teaches(looking at the new testament and christianity as a whole)

    As a Portuguese, I can say that there is a lot of people in Portugal that think and act that way, using the bible and outdated laws to justify such actions and is seem mostly on 40~50 year old people that where the brainwashed by the dictatorship that wanted Portugal for 41 years and it gets worst when nostalgia comes along and they start to say thing like how they miss Salazar time and how he make Portugal great and ignore all the violence, oppression and terror he caused, creating new wave of fascism oriented generation in modern times. Its just repulsing.

    On the sexual accusation topic. I agree that it's a lil' bit of both. They are just looking for people to crucify and then yell 'We did something!' And then another Harvey Weinstein will appear, but hopefully this time new ways of dealing with this cases can appear and people can ask themselves if it's another Harvey W case and deal with it much sooner.
