Same here, matthines748. Heard Welser-Most and the Cleveland perform it last night at Severance Music Center. There is so much richness in this symphony I never appreciated before. Maybe I just never really listened. The second movement knocked me out.
It took me time, indeed several years, to fully appreciate Bruckner and it happened to me too in the same way as for you. Now this symphony is one of my favorites.
He will be the longest serving music director of the Cleveland Orchestra when his contract ends in 2027. It may have taken a little time, but Clevelanders appreciate what they have in him, and all he's done for the music and the city.
Magnífica interpretación de esta monumental, genial e intimista cuarta sinfonía de Bruckner en lugar tan apropiado como hermoso y bello. Me encanta Bruckner.
UMA DAS GRANDES SINFONIAS DO SÉCULO 19 AO LADO DA NONA DE BEETHOVEN, PRIMEIRA DE BRAHMS, FANTÁSTICA DE BERLIOZ, PATÉTICA DE TCHAIKOVSKY E NOVO MUNDO DE DVORÁK ENTRE OUTRAS!!! ORQUESTRA DE CLEVELAND!
It's not all Welser-Most's fault although he certainly doesn't help things. Bruckner rewrote this symphony in 1887-88 and all but wrecked the coda of the finale in his third revision. In the second version (78-80), it is much more powerful and far better honed. Bruckner really shouldn't have paid any attention to those around him at the time telling him to rewrite this, that and the other to suit them, but unfortunately, he did. This performance is of the third version.
This performance to me, is just a professional rendering. I don't think that I recall any special moments in the piece. A nice performance, a nice orchestra. A difficult piece.
Interesting to see Bill Preucil as concertmaster back a few years. Terrific violinist/concertmaster and also an accused abuser of young women. His PARENTS, Bill Sr. and Doris are fine people and have contributed much with their playing and teaching over the last fifty-plus years.
No doubt, this is a good performance of Bruckner's 4th symphony, clear and well phrased. Yet, it is too clinical. More spontaneity would have made it better.
Good Lord why does that cello section put so many notes in one bow when they're not even like that in the score? Move the ball back and forth a little more you'll have better sound, jesus
I wish Franz Welser Möst a good recovery. This rendition is in my views boring and lifeless as it gets. The digital resources in these days a ruthless in the possibility of comparing performances and this one is one of the worst ever published. If I do not have an opinion as an artist it would be better to be silent. This rendition is absolutely pointless in colours, dynamics, tempo (speed) - relations and balance of sound. Delete it and no one will ever miss it.
I grew up on classical music, but never really listened to Bruckner until a few years ago. The 4th Symphony blew me away and then I had to hear more.

Will see this live this Saturday at Severance Hall. Cannot wait.... The Cleveland Orchestra is a gem of the city.
Yes it is!
I envy you! I'm too far from there.
WOW! The Cleveland Orchestra is still at the top! Franz Welser-Most lets the music sing! Bravo!!

Amazing that the timpanist is playing his drums in the German configuration
This is one of the best Bruckner 4 I’ve ever heard. Character is there. Uniqueness is there. Bravo Maestro.
Concordo plenamente com você. A música flui de modo impecável e muito harmonioso. Simplesmente adorável.
Orquestra agitadíssima.
I loved this interpretation. A huge like.
Wunderbar! Schade, dass es nur in MONO ist.
The doctor called and the orchestra is suffering from mono. I hear they all got it from wocomo. (Seriously, wocomo, fix your upload settings!)

Sounds like an introcuction to Heaven !
Eine Sternstunde!
This is the 1888 version.

ORQUESTRA DE CLEVELAND!
Its rather unfortunate, that after good work in the rest of the symphony, he drops the ball in the coda so spectacularly

How so?

"Accused" but not "charged"?
Nachsatz: Diese bearbeitete Fassung war keine gute Idee! Demnächst kommt noch ein Esel um die Ecke und bearbeitet diese wieder neu...
why is mahler composing?
Funny not to see the horns in this symphony recording as they are so important.
Someone said it's a good professional performance. Yes, it feels adequate but only that, being somewhat static and plain.
Not last night.

MONO recording !!! What a pity ! Why ?

I take it that you do not like this particular performance?😄
