I love Bruckner and I particularly love this symphony. There's this "cathedral architecture" about his works and then there are the simplest of motifs which grow and evolve into great counterpoint and massive climaxes. I find the music in the last few minutes stunning.
50:10-51:20 is miraculous...the aching long cries/sighs of the winds over the chromatic turns of the strings pushing and pulling, culminating in a luminous yet tragic passage topped by pizzicato violins that opens into a huge horn chorale. I don't like much of Bruckner, but I am so glad I was able to hear just this one minute
Did you think that going nowhere and being unresolved WAS the intended purpose of this crescendo? If not, I think you're too conservative to understand it, go listen to Mozart 40 for the 2000th time

So, is this a commercial recording? Or is it a live recording? It’s certainly not Karajan, as is advertised here. The last few minutes sound amazing with those accented triplets in the strings. Celibidache does that too, but at waaaaaaaaay too slow a tempo. But in this performance, you get the same great effect without having to slow it down.
Wenn man Sinfonien von Bruckner hört, sieht man seine Genialität. Sie sind manchmal überrascht, weil sie nie gedacht haben, dass das Werk Bruckners melodisch und harmonisch so perfekt wäre.
@@FreakieFan Don't trust the descriptions. They basically indicate who claims copyrights to the video, but could be wrong about the performance, since they're too similar to tell apart unless you're a discography specialist.
It's not uncommon to sometimes hear conductors making noises. in this case it's no doubt due to the physical demands of conducting music of the sort of length Bruckner's music is, or maybe it's just an expression of passion. It's certainly not ruining the recording at all.
@@rodthom86 My point is that the conductor making noise is not as disturbing as literally missing the last bars of a movement. I don't understand the point of your sarcasm here.
@@zjschrageI’m guessing that this is a live performance. Not a commercial recording. So that spot would not see that big a deal, unless it were released on a record label.
@@charlescoleman5509 Its just an error by whoever edited the video (which is a shame because I quite like this recording), but the 2nd and 3rd movements are chopped before they finish. For the 2nd you dont really noticie since its a fade out ending, but its really jarring for the 3rd. 42:48

VIOLA!!!!
My God, that finale! Starting from a pulsing murmur to that thunderous rapture. Fantastic!!

33:45 It's like a half-minute crescendo that goes literally NOWHERE. Sometimes it just seems like Bruckner did not know what he was doing.
Better that way sometimes though, surely...

Does anybody know the orchestra and conductor of this amazing performance?
Eliahu Inbal conducting the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Live performance. There’s also a video version here on TH-cam.

Who is conducting and which orchestra?
As you can see in the description, it is the Berlin Philharmonic under Herbert von Karajan

Oh dear!
@@FreakieFan The description says Vienna under Abbado as well...

I think each movement has a different performer. I just know that the Finale is Inbal with the Frankfurt Radio.

the fact that the last few notes are just abruptly cut off from the end of the 3rd movement is pretty bad

This version is uncomparably worse than the original, except the finale.
