Young people..What you are all forgetting now is, back then, the bb didn't have that protective covering that gives much greater traction today! It also has some give nowadays, some soft feel under a gymnast's feet, so she can actually dig her toes into it. When Nadia performed her athletic poetry, it was just a 4 inch wide piece of wood. Also, the floor exercise was done on a flat mat. It had no springs underneath like today.
She has never been surpassed, and it deserves to stay that way because she will then always be remembered, and be a mother of inspiration to all other women. She deserves that HONOR. She said, "Do what your heart loves." I hope she is remembered for all of everlasting-ness.
0:36 is probably a skill most elite gymnasts can do today, but nobody can do it as beautifully and gracefully as Nadia. I love her pose when she finishes a skill, it’s like the movement travels through her body and exits through her hands lol
Olga Korbut 72 Munich beam was a masterpiece, work of art. That golden era you're referring to has come to pass, now they're all pumped up like bullfrogs on roids & mechanical, look constipated & as though they're just repeating the script over & over... Ludymilla Terescheva was kinda cold but as far as her longevity in the sport goes was one of the most gifted talents but in my opinion she was one of the last to have a womanly figure that I appreciate as she actually appeared very healthy & strong, not overtly muscular & grotesque like today but also not bones & sticks like I hate to say Nadia or Olga in their younger days, that's not healthy & I can see where the stamina weakened for them but Ludymilla Terescheva, (I don't think she has a nice personality and has a reputation for being a cold bitch), has the ideal body in my opinion, and wasn't ashamed and still one of the best who lasted a long time as a champ. There was also a girl in more recent decades that was tall from Russia, again an unusual stature & body type for gymnastics and I can't think of her name, very pretty face & tall like a model, she did great & defied the odds. I haven't watched in decades & who needs to when you have perfection of an era that can't ever be matched!!! It's a time can never be recaptured. I personally was never captivated by American gymnastics, I go to my Slavic roots maybe but find European & Russian's naturals in a way that just isn't there & can't be replicated, no matter the fancy imported coaches or this or that.
Olga 1972 has to be one of the most overrated performances not just in gymnastics but in the history of all sports. Her beam routine is laughable compared to Nadia 1976. Olga couldn't even get a bronze medal in all-around in 1972 and 1976!!! Her 1972 was rightfully called mediocre after everybody saw Nadia 1976. Olga wasn't even in the top 2 Soviet gymnasts in 1972 as seen in the all-around!
Nadia was much more graceful than any of the gymnasts at the current Olympics. Aly Raisman is amazing and silky smooth but she has had more time to perfect her craft because she is 22 years old. It looks like they did tons of work on the flexibility in Nadia's back. She looked like a dancer as if she had ballet training. In comparison many of today's female gymnasts look like fullbacks rushing through their routines. stiff blocky movement
She makes it look so effortless. I really love watching gymnastics, but it comes off so soulless these days compared to the fluidity and grace that inhabited earlier styles.
I agree, but honestly these days you have to fit in so much tumbling and skills if you want a higher start value. There's not that much time to dance and look elegant like Nadia in the 1970s.
I know nothing about gymnastics but have heard she got a perfect 10. After watching that, I understand. Perfection. The balance, flow, speed, and grace were just hypnotizing. I can't even think of anything like it that matches that perfection.
No. She isnt performing a standing full or double turns, but had this been today s gymnastics...I have absolutely zero doubt Nadia would still be the reigning queen. Her stealth, air awareness, balance and connection to whichever apparatus she was on is absolutely second to none!!!! She absolutely could compete at todays level at her finest
Who knows 🤷🏾♂️. She has a lot of grace almost like she is dancing on the beam, but today's beam routine are more about power. Not sure she would excel in that environment.
One of the few gymnasts from back then that I think could perform at an elite level and still win major competitions against the big names today. Real athleticism, grace and most of all, FEARLESSNESS.
Nah. She was great, an icon for the sport and she 100% pushed it forward. That being said, this routine is absolutely not competitive by today's standards. Not only would this routine not win, this routine wouldn't even qualify her to be in the big competitions.
doesn't she just. She's so...soundless. It's nearly unreal, grace like that. Hardly anyone has it, and it's such a beautiful thing. I think this is what makes Helen Mirren so beautiful, it's grace. So rare.
That's right. Sometimes I hear people say: "No, that routine was not THAT good as to get a perfect 10; there are gymnasts who do more difficult and striking routines". But what we have to judge is quality, not quantity. Every single move in this routine was PERFECT.
In these days this was an extremely difficult routine. A single flip had only just been performed in the last Olympics. Look at what was before Nadia. They essentially walked across the beam before this.
I suspect the folks who down voted this video didn't see it on TV during the '76 Olympics. Nadia was the first gymnast to do a hand free cartwheel and back handspring on the beam. Breathtaking! Gymnastics was so beautiful back then. I love watching the old videos. Such grace and poise. With the exception of Nastia you don't see that fluid movement between skills.
Nadia Comaneci is easily the greatest gymnast in history. My father was a huge fan of hers when I was 5 years old & we watched her in 1976. When I come home after work, I watch her on these youtube clips just to relax. Nadia Comaneci FOREVER!!!!!!
She was better than anyone today, including Gabby Douglas, Nadia was so artistic, graceful and tackled all of the most complicated maneuvers with ease.
One of the clearest memories from the 1970s for me was watching Nadia Comaneci perform at the 76 Montreal Olympics on tv. I would of been 6 yrs old at the time and she looked older to me then, but now that I see her again, she was but a small thing really, but apparently 14 yrs old. My memory of that time is still quite clear because I must have fallen in love while watching her on tv that day; and I think there still is a part of me that loves her still: a 6 yr old boy and a 14 yr old girl, oceans apart, frozen in time.
I was twelve during the 1976 Olympics and her performance will always stay in my memory. With her perfect 10s, we didn’t know we were watching history in the making.
Still for me the best beam of all time. No stops and starts, no exaggerated and irritating hand gesture, no showy over extended splits and no wobbles. Beautiful and classical. I wonder if Nadia was ballet trained?

Es impresionante como se pasea por la barra, como si fuese lo más natural del mundo moverse por ahí, parece que no le cueste ningún esfuerzo, que le sale tan fácil como respirar. Es genial, perfecta.
Well what they do today is a lot more intense. They need a break to get a breather or power for their next series. But yeah Nadia was so graceful and fluid.
I cannot agree more. What makes performances from Nadia and Olg'a era so memorable and pleasing is not the "bigger, faster, higher" feats now abruptly strung together but rather how much their overall routine impresses. There are no discordant movments, ever. Utterly every part of their body moves at all times with a controlled fluidity and graceful precision simply not seen anymore. Without artistry it is impossible to touch the soul and create a truly memorable performance.
Nothing is a great as when an athlete is so comfortable on the beam. Too many are stiff within the routine and trying not to have flaws, faults, or falls. She looked as relaxed as if she was on a sofa. It adds something to the element
She's have this special sense of her body and the most gracious movements at the same time, making all to seem so easy. The cat on the hot roof. A rare talent and a lot of work.
That was very well done! I was watching women's gymnastics last night, and due to the high technicality, there were loads of mistakes being made due to the girls rushing through their routines. Nadia's routine was poised, graceful and well-timed, with a lot less technicality, enabling her to do a flawless routine.
Those Olympics made me and so many of my generation start gymnastics. I personally got out in 1981 after a fall on vault.... but loved it all!! Nadia was so magnificent and even stronger than we ever knew.
Magnífico! he esperado 20 años para volver a ver estas históricas imágenes, que llenaron mi adolescencia de felicidad! en buenahora! testimoniar a Nadia es constatar que Dios aún nos ama!
Oh, so THAT'S how it's supposed to look! I always wondered what the deal was with all those weird, sharp, robotic, random hand flicks that the gymnasts do. But looking at this, I can see that those strange, ugly gestures must have evolved (or rather, de-evolved) from these kind of graceful arm motions used by gymnasts in the slower-paced past.
I really hate all the fast, unbalanced routines now. This is just so much better. I know the gymnasts now probably have more technical routines but it's far too fast and choppy for my liking
I love Nadia and there will never be anything like her again, but let's not insult today's gymnast. What they did back then was hard, but now it's just become so intense with the insane passes and a tumbling packed beam routine. They can't keep constantly moving like they did back then because the tricks they do now take so much more power and energy. They need pauses In between certain skills or they'll like pass out. I love today's gymnasts and the gymnasts back then as well. Let's just appreciate how much of an influence this lovely Nadia has been towards today's gymnastics.
This was gorgeous. The routines today are impressive, but there is so much high jumping and slamming down on the beam that the grace is lost. I've never seen another gymnast move as elegantly as Nadia Comaneci, even though they do crazy high flips and jumps today.
The difference with Nadia & todays gymnast is Nadia had total control & strength over her moves. & also she trained for 6 to 7 hrs a day in gymnastics... the gymnast today dont seem to have control & focus that Nadia has. Nadia is a awesome gymnast & person :)

Your right..she didn't. And to this day I dont see any gymnast who has her "feather lightness" even on her tumbling elements. That front aeiral is the best.
I think Dominique Moceanu had moments when she floated like Nadia, but certainly nobody else has ever flown like Nadia. I fear with the emphasis on power gymnastics, we won't see the likes of her again any time soon.

***** Absolutely. She is married to Bart Connor the American Olympic gymnast. They own a gym in Oklahoma. She does a lot of charity type work back in Romania as well. She was just at the recent World Championships in Ireland. She's an amazing person really, and still keeps quite involved and busy.
@@Thomasnmi Look at most 21st century blogs that list ""best balance beam" performances ever. Comeneci is often not in the top 5. It's too bad we fail to focus on superlative like "greatest" when evaluating such a groundbreaking moment of athletic artistry and lower ourselves, once again, to the numerical hum-drum of points and how human beings are so supposed to be content with the posting of scores.
So glad that there are some videos of Nadia Comăneci on YT that we can enjoy the real and excellent performance on beam. Recent performances of female gymnasts in London Olympics were just DISAPPOINTING!
Nadia was extremely graceful, yes, but this is also a much simpler routine than a competitive beam routine today. You have to be much stronger and more athletic to complete the tricks that are the current standard.
+Evi Madon Absolutely I agree, but there's a stark contrast between strength and athleticism on a difficult routine and grace and beauty on a simple one.
There's so much grace! Everything feels so connected...These days, there is a lot more power and strength but some of the more rhythmic elements come off feeling so robotic and just very obviously rehearsed as part of a routine....Just kinda crammed in there between the different jumps and flips. I think balance beam would actually benefit a little from being set to music.
since i know myself i wannted to become gymnast...unfortunatelly what i wanted and what my mom wanted for me was different.... i'm from romania and is such a big pleasure for me to see a perfect performance... it make me cry no matter how much i watch it.... we have such big tresures..... i love Nadia! thx for vid
This is how you know you have seen a master because you don’t need any sound or any commentary to see very clearly that it’s amazin! right now sadly even the supposed best in the world cannot do this routine well. Having a strong dismount is not all there is to being a master even if u are winning golds!
We have to consider that routine was new thing back then… Nadia was one of the ones that introduced those moves into the olympics. Olga Korbut started to perform these moves in Munich but Nadia took them to the new level and entered gymnastics into a new era!
We didn't have TV back then but read Sports magazine and there read that 13 years old girl got 10/10 , Never forgot till today, I still admire her today.Thanks.
Considero que todas las gimnastas que quieren competir y en general todals ver los vídeos de Nadia ,para mí por siempre la gran 10 puntos pasan los años y que maravilloso es ver sus rutinas!
I also think her form and her lines are unparalled. They stuff she was doing was not easy by any means either, even for today. I don't think anyone has really mastered this level of expertise or the sheer concentration she had, that every move precise and sure at the same time.
You can't think of anything that matches her perfection Rolo because there is nothing to match her. She is not just an athlete. Not just a gymnast. She is the embodiment of feminine grace and agility, feline, elegant, flowing. Hypnotically beautiful.
I am Nadia's age and have watched so many gynmasts in my lifetime. In my opinion, she is still the best...just so very graceful and flawless. She sticks her landings without hopping. I have yet see a better gymnast. She is simply amazing!
I think this is so much more enjoyable to watch than most of today's beam routines. She's so fluid!

Perfection!!!!!! She makes an extremely difficult routine look easy- she isn't stuggling at all, its all so smooth and perfect.
Watching the stocky athleticism of today's gymnast doesn't compare with the beauty and grace of Nadia.
@@evimadon6520 - those were risk moves and was considered very difficult to do. She went beyond the moves back then.
@@jude999 I do prefer graceful, ballet-like routines. I think many female gymnasts today have too much muscle on them. They look like body-builders.
What I observe about this routine is that you don’t really even notice she is on a 4 inch beam because her balance is so perfect and fluid.
I remember watching this on t.v. and being so amazed at Nadia. It was great to see such flawless perfection....really enjoyed seeing her perform.
the flow, such elegance, beautiful!
I love her choreography. It looks so much more natural and graceful than those strange things they do now.
I saw not one bobble. Perfect landings & execution all the way through.
since i know myself i wannted to become gymnast...unfortunatelly what i wanted and what my mom wanted for me was different.... i'm from romania and is such a big pleasure for me to see a perfect performance... it make me cry no matter how much i watch it.... we have such big tresures..... i love Nadia! thx for vid
She is so inspirational to me ❤️👍🏼👌🏻
the side aerial- immediate flip, not many gymnasts could do that even in todays day and age! just inspirational!!
I prefer Nadia’s beam routine over Biles! Nadia is shear elegance and beauty !
This is how you know you have seen a master because you don’t need any sound or any commentary to see very clearly that it’s amazin! right now sadly even the supposed best in the world cannot do this routine well. Having a strong dismount is not all there is to being a master even if u are winning golds!
She was legend, even before being born.
Sie war eine Legend, als perfekt als echt!
I dont think there has ever been a more beautiful beam routine ever. she was amazing.
it's as difficult as any modern routine because of her flawless technique and execution
absolutely no awkward pauses or hesitation -- she moved like water. impressive!
Perfection, there hasn't being another one like her.
We have to consider that routine was new thing back then… Nadia was one of the ones that introduced those moves into the olympics. Olga Korbut started to perform these moves in Munich but Nadia took them to the new level and entered gymnastics into a new era!
American gymnasts look like tanks. Nadia floated on the balance beam. Elegant and graceful.
Não ha desequilibrio algum durante a rotina. É graciosa com movimentos bem femininos. Nota 10. Perfeita.
yo la vi ese día y fue muy emocionante , yo la seguía es decir el mundo entero y es muy grande ver ese tipo de eventos
Nadia was perfection - simply thrilling to watch. I think some people today just don't realise how important her work was.
Beautiful, she makes it look so effortless - that's how gymnastics should be
We didn't have TV back then but read Sports magazine and there read that 13 years old girl got 10/10 , Never forgot till today, I still admire her today.Thanks.
FLAWLESS VICTORY
Considero que todas las gimnastas que quieren competir y en general todals ver los vídeos de Nadia ,para mí por siempre la gran 10 puntos pasan los años y que maravilloso es ver sus rutinas!
That was so beautiful to watch. She completely revolutionized the sport.
I also think her form and her lines are unparalled. They stuff she was doing was not easy by any means either, even for today.
I don't think anyone has really mastered this level of expertise or the sheer concentration she had, that every move precise and sure at the same time.
AMAZING!
Majestic, timeless, beautiful. This level will not be repeated.
nadia is truly a legend in the history of gymnastics.
😁
You can't think of anything that matches her perfection Rolo because there is nothing to match her. She is not just an athlete. Not just a gymnast. She is the embodiment of feminine grace and agility, feline, elegant, flowing. Hypnotically beautiful.
I am Nadia's age and have watched so many gynmasts in my lifetime. In my opinion, she is still the best...just so very graceful and flawless. She sticks her landings without hopping. I have yet see a better gymnast.
She is simply amazing!
Shes inspiring, because at such a young age, she brought so much talent.
The greatest Gymnast of all time
