    These are much, much more serviceable than anything TC puts out nowadays. Great job Mark!

    Mark. This vid was really helpful. I own one of this units and it was blown away during a blackout. Turned out the very same components you had to replace were 'toasted' in my unit. The mosfet and that very same diode. I purchased "close enough" spare parts and voila! Unit repaired. Thanks a lot!

    Just repaired my Nova System. Same diode and transistor. Thank you for the video. Not only very helpful but entertaining too! Greetings from Kiel, Germany.

    Mouser is 140 miles from here in Texas USA. I like their engineering department. If you have a part you cant source they will check it out for you have what you need the next day. During my years I would need only a small order at times. They never complained.

    This power supply is the same as the one used in Tannoy TXD-1 audio processors! I've repaired many and the main culprit is the large smoothing cap (don't forget to discharge as it holds 400V!!) The outputs are +15v, -15v, +5v and +3v. The smaller caps go quite often too and strangely - my last repair was the same Diode! thanks for a great vid! Bravo!

    Man you saved me with this video. Exactly the same thing happened. Transistor and diode to be replaced. It's good that I can replace it myself, otherwise I would have to pay PLN 200 for the entire power supply. Sorry for my English but I'm from Poland and I'm using a translator. Thank you and best regards.

    Just discovered your show, and it's amazing how simple cheap pieces that fail that inevitably push electronics to the scrap heap, keep it up. Cheers from Cleveland, Ohio and should you ever want to visit these parts reach out I've got a few airbnb to set you up for a night or two. In trade for the time spent putting your videos together.

    I just repaired a Voicelive unit today - exactly the same faults. I managed to get the mosfet off eBay but it was expensive. That fuse did a really good job and prevented further damage. I have a Blackstar HT pedal which also uses an smps - no onboard fuse resulting in a big toasted section on the PCB.

    Good video. With boards that have sockets on the rear panel, I like to do those screws and nuts up first so the board is flush with the panel. Then do up the ones inside. That way there's less stress on the board being pulled into alignment with the rear panel.

    T.C. ELECTRONICS are a quality company when it comes to sound processing. My friend designed some of their products and also ran a studio in Germany. Makes you wonder why they have design flaws from the perspective of the repair engineer. But it's common to use a screwdriver that has an angled bit for these jobs. But I guess it happens with cars too - awkward to carry out repairs for some. I worked as a gas engineer and we never repaired anything at component level. Lots of wastefulness in the gas trade.

    Hi Mark good video. Please please be aware of the glue that’s on the circuit board over period of time goes hard and crusty and creates resistance which causes these problems whenever you see this glue in a dark state remove it. It creates a lot of problems especially in switch mode power supply’s

    • @SenfSenferson
      @SenfSenferson ปีที่แล้ว

      This Caused my Subwoofer Amp to behave weird... It ate through a Resistors Leg... Removed the glue everywhere on the Board and replaced the Resistors.
      Works like it should again :)

    Nice job Mark. I bet you're glad you checked the secondary for shorts. I'm guessing your new switching transistor together with who knows what would of let out the blue smoke if you didn't. I've seen some people use lightbulbs to help prevent psu melt down when they have trouble finding the fault. But this being all through hole makes things easier somewhat.

    • @MendItMark
      @MendItMark  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks! That was an easy one to be honest. I’m not a fan of things going bang, so my test socket is fed through a few things: isolation transformer, into a variac, through some light bulbs, through the ammeter, then to the test socket. The bypass switch is used to bypass the light bulbs for heavier loads. Most of that stuff lives under the bench, out of sight.

    Stumbled upon your video. Your expertise level and ability to explain 'on the go' are amazing.
    As an owner of a TC Nova System I also have a question: the control knob seem to be rotary encoders. With time they seem to get less responsive. In your expertised opinion: is this similar as with normal potentiometers? As in: could I use contact cleaner, or should I take other measures?

    • @springford9511
      @springford9511 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't really know, but I would imagine that rotary encoders would be solid state and have no contacts. But I would apparently be wrong:-)

    • @MendItMark
      @MendItMark  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use general anti static foam cleaners, like one from RS components. However, consider that they might clean off some markings and paint ( see my Technics SU-V90D video to see it go wrong). Just, don’t leave them to ‘soak’ too long, as any reactions will be worse. Test a small area first for bad reactions. In general, more modern mixers use better inks, which don’t rub off.
