    Not only are you an expert turner, Kent, but you are a superb teacher. You explain what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and how the wood will react as a result. I get more out of your videos than anywhere else.

    Very cool! Thank you Kent. This inspired me to turn my thinnest bowl yet. It is 1/8" thick, 9.75" diameter X 1.625" H. My impression of a paper plate.😂

    The guy who taught me woodturning used to turn native Oak thin, it would have pinholes throughout the bowl, quite a sight.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lewis, that's so cool. Oak has medullary rays coming from the pith out that will hold the grain rings together like lace. It's perfect for thin turning. have fun and Happy Turning!

    Hi Kent..
    I make lampshades for old lamps from these thinly turned bowls.
    As a result, cold LED light appears much warmer and cozier.

    Kent, you mentioned recycled candle wax. Did you melt it onto the wood, or suspend the wax in a solvent?
    By the way, the first bowl I made was quite thin walled, made from some nicely dried plum that was given to me. Couldn’t have done it without your instruction!

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fantastic Mike! Well done! As for the wax, I melt it in a old crock pot and dip the blanks. ;) All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    I love the bowl! While you were turning it, I could already see the light thru it at some points. The camera angles really help see what you are doing. Great explanation on using the calipers. Very helpful!!

    Hey Kent, You are very talented. That was an amazing job. The bowl turned out beautifully. A man has to know his limitations and right now I am not good enough to make something that thin but maybe at some future point I will be. Excellent work. Yall have a wonderful day.

    Kent very nice turning. Tool control is smooth and consistent. I have a branch from a cantor tree that was cut earlier this week. It is about 5”, I think I will try to do thin Wall turning. Thanks for another great video.

    I have never used a lathe, let alone turned a bowl but I am hoping to find a place a learn one day. I find this so fascinating and soothing to watch (I watch Tommy Silva work the lathe as well).
    I do have a question: Using “green” wood like this with a fair amount of moisture isn;t the bowl prone to checking and/or cracking (or even warping) as it drys over time? Especially as thin as this one is?

    Are you able to do thin wall when twice turning? I assume it's challenging since you won't have the center mass to stabilize the walls during the second turn.

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can! And yes, you are right. You just need to be patient and go slow working down the wall. Have fun and Happy Turning!

    Hi Kent, what a spectacularly beautiful bowl! You truly are an artist. I'll not try to make anything that thin. First have to learn to turn anything decent lol. I prefer using wood that's local to me (western european) like elm, beech oak, walnut, ash, maple (?) and a couple of trees I don't know the English name for. If I should ever attempt turning anything like this, what northewestern European wood would you suggest I use?

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Silvia, give yourself time. You can do it. Remember; persistent, patient practice will yield the bowls you imagine creating! All the best to you and Happy Turning!

    Hi Kent, I have a question, if the wood is soaking wet how the wood react after sealing the bowel? Btw. your videos are great for learning!! Thanks and happy video making 👊

    • @TurnAWoodBowl
      @TurnAWoodBowl  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Richard. Because this was so thin, this bowl was dry within 48 hrs and the finishing process is like all other bowls. Happy Turning!

    Hi Kent, great video on turning this thin, translucent bowl. You mentioned using the Danish Oil to help control the drying process. What do you use for final coats?

  • @radicr
    @radicr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have made translucent bowls, not that I wanted it but I made a mistake and needed to make walls even so it turned out like that:)

    • @TurnAWoodBowl

      LOL, I think we've all done that. Unexpected translucent bowls REALLY get the adrenaline flowing. ;) Happy Turning!
