  • Fresh from recommissioning at Wayne Carini’s shop; Jay Leno, Donald Osborne, and Antonio Melegari take a drive in a Maserati Bora. It’s the Franco-Italian love child of Maserati and Citroën that combines the very best the two companies had to offer at the time. And boy, does she scream. Sit back, relax, listen and enjoy the siren song of the Maserati Bora.

    Here’s a story that’s one of my favorite Bora experiences:
    The rear engine placement makes it hard to cool properly. It was a struggle to achieve the best possible cooling on our ‘75 Bora, I bought it needing work and with a persistent overheating problem. We used diligent air-bleeding, adding water-wetter, and removing any obstructions to air flow at the front-mounted radiator. Thus, we succeeded in preventing it from overheating.
    Mind you, it would still get thoroughly heat-soaked, and tend to stay that way.
    Leaving a fundraiser at Lake George on a hot summer day, I got stuck in traffic with other exotic car owners before getting to the highway. The Bora got heat-soaked. OK, so I just waited it out and got to the highway. We got up around 70-80mph but the Bora was stubbornly heat-soaked and stayed hot. My friends sped off at triple digits in their more modern exotics. I got a little miffed and decided TO HECK WITH THIS, and floored it…
    .. and that’s when it happened… it was at 130-140 that the temperature needle really dropped down… and it struck me like lightning: Of course a Bora is designed for cooling at 1970s Autostrada speeds, not 70 or 80..! I laughed out load as I caught up to the Aventadores, 458 and 599s.
    Lesson learned.
    It’s been a fabulous car to own.

      Excellent story. My tip, connect a wire and switch to the cabin from the fan switch, so that you can switch the fan on at any time you wish, since I also had heat problems in traffic in summer with the classic Alfa Romeo I own. Preumably you werre on a deristricted autobahn when you sped to 130+ speeds....

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cbca6567 .. thank you. I haven’t felt the need. The Bora radiator has two functional thermostatic switches that operate two radiator fans .. they prevent overheating even at a standstill, so I choose to let them operate automatically, as Alfieri intended.

    • @cbca6567
      @cbca6567 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@65SATisfaction sure but then you experienced heat soak, and the fans should then have stopped this but did not as you described. presumably the fans were not on constantly when you had that heat soak otherwise there would be no problem, hence my suggestion.

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cbca6567 My apologies. My mistake. I am using the term "Heat Soak" incorrectly. I understand that Heat Soak is another term for overheating. My Bora is not overheating. I'm using Heat Soak to describe components heating up and retaining heat outside of the engine core, requiring extra time to cool off once you get going down the road. If you keep pushing the engine hard, that heat doesn't dissipate and the coolant temperature takes longer to fall. The fans will run continuously during this time if the thermostatic switches are functioning properly. The fans start switching on at 85C for the first fan, and 95C for second fan. They are able to keep the engine core from overheating the coolant, but don't provide any other engine bay cooling, so accessories and such continue to stay hot. Once you get going down the road, it can take quite a while for airflow to cool the engine bay and relieve what I am incorrectly calling Heat Soak. 40mph is a very effective speed, or 140 as I mentioned. So - if the Bora is stuck in traffic, in the heat, both fans kick on, the engine temperature plateaus around 110C, and it will stay there with both fans running, in perpetuity, without actually overheating until other conditions, such as ram-air, helps the radiator bring the temperature down. I hope that explains why I can rely on the fans.
      Within this context, the Bora and Khamsin - and maybe other Maseratis - had cooling issues from day one. After public sales started, Maserati had to go back and modify the front grilles on both those models to improve cooling... vapor-lock is avoided by the fuel rail having an overflow which continuously circulates heated fuel back to the fuel tank, and fresh, cool fuel is supplied.

    I was lucky enough to have a really good look at a Bora with it's owner at a car show in the summer.
    A truly lovely car. Super engineering with great attention to detail.
    The body shape is lovely, a "unique" brushed stainless steel roof, flared wheel arches, all the electro-hydraulic "trickery" for the pedals/seats/wheel etc.
    And if you want instant gratification...take off the top engine cover and just drink in the view of the engine/gearbox!
    Waaaay beyond my pension range, but, you can but dream!!! And I agree with Wayne:- choice of Bora or Ferrari 308 - the Bora wins EVERY time!

    There were two significant reasons the Bora wasn't so successful at the time: it exactly came out in the wrong moment,the middle of the fuel crisis in Europe, with sunday drivings forbidden, and many other regulations (that in the USA killed all big engines nearly).Secondly,they launched the "baby version" Merak shortly after, with the Citroen-Maserati built SM V6 .The Merak looked nearly carbon copy to the Bora, had two additional seats, was lighter, and priced at close to a BMW 3.0 CS, about 40% more than a 1971 Corvette.The Bora in 1974 was 29.000 dollars, being 4,4 times the price of a Corvette.This explains that

      I think one reason is that the buying public didn't really understand what kind of a car it was supposed to be? It came out in the mid engine craze of the late 60's/early 70's, being unfavourably compared to the Lamborghini Miura/Countach, Ferrari BB, DeTomaso Pantera, and the others. While it was supposed to be a GT car that just happened to be mid-engined, essentially the successor to the restrained and sublime Ghibli. It's more of a gentlemans car like the Aston Martin and not the like the boy racerish Ferraris. In that it actually has a lot in common with the Ferrari Testarossa, which is really more of a GT than a true hypercar.

    • @DenUitvreter
      @DenUitvreter 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ingvarhallstrom2306 We should not forget that mid-engined has come to be the mark of supercars, but in the early 70's it was just a new thing and tried for this GT too. Quite a few concepts of that day played with the idea of mid-engined four seaters too. I guess they thought mid engine was going to be the future for a wider range of cars than ended up being the case.
      The Merak actually enrages me, how could they have devalued their design language instantly by making their own cheap rip off?

    Since the 60s Maserati has not been as popular as Ferrari or Lamborghini, and this having Citroen dampens enthusiasm for it even more despite Maserati clearly using some of the best Citroen had to offer and nothing more. If anything I think the lack of it being purely a Maserati is what people don't appreciate. When manufacturers collaborate like this great things can and do happen.

    One of the reasons behind the Bora's status as a forgotten car was, surprisingly, honesty. Maserati listed the maximum speed as 163 mph. Lamborghini and Ferrari both claimed that their competitors could manage 300 km/h or a little over 186mph. People bought the "faster cars", despite the magazines finding that L & F had exaggerated quite a bit.

    The confluence of Citroen and Maserati created some amazing cars… the Bora, Merak, Khamsin and Indy.. This time period is also a minefield of facts vs fiction..
    .. the V6 engine that Maserati’s Chief Engineer Alfieri designed for Citroen’s SM is an example:
    Maserati *did* cut a standard V8 into a V6 to establish certain parameters for the prototyping of the new V6.. but ultimately what ended up being used in the SM was not “a version of Maserati’s V8”. They only share the same 90degree angle. That’s all. Well, and the same 42DCNF Webers. After the experimental “cut V8”, Alfieri spent 5 months on design and development to deliver 3 prototype 2.7L V6 engines to Citroen. All you need is to note where the timing chains are located.
    Tricky territory.

    I grew up in the 70s and even as a young teen then I never was all that impressed with the look of the wedge shaped styling that was popular then. There was a couple I did like , namely the Lancia Stratos ( to me is one of the best looking sports cars of all time) and the Ford Pantera. To bad the Pantera did not perform as good as it looked. Although it can be a good car with a ton of money thrown at it to work out the factory and engineering mistakes.
    To me the Bora falls into the not to impressive styling category. Its just not my "cup of tea" as they say. That engine does sound amazing and I bet it does drive like a dream though, as stated in the video. Very nice example. The Maser v8 was race derived, dry sump, had hemi-heads, and an air-gap intake with separate runners for each carb throat. It had timing chains while the Ferraris had belts, and was very reliable. I think the tail end of the v-6 Merak looked better, but the flying buttresses were a bit odd. Your braided fuel line system and orange plug wires look like it belongs on some kids hotrod, not an Italian exotic and looks absurd. Thank god for the euro spec bumpers, the US spec were hideous. Big problem for servicing the Citroen-Masers was when mechanics used hydraulic fluid instead of the green Citroen fluid. I had a Ghibli SS which I restored, it is older tech, solid axel, but beautiful styling.

I can imagine these two while inside of the car end up arguing and duking it out...sayin" you get ur car no u get ur own no u drive ur car ok then u drive ur own going back and forth😅😂like a comedy

    Pre-Oil Embargo era, but the emissions legislation going into effect 1975. Also, domestic V8 cars sitting on lots was what was being pushed. Because Japanese 4 cylinders made sense. Many thought we might run out of oil. That Bora in low production comparatively speaking, was at the wrong time. American V8 muscle cars by 1975 were irresponsible purchases. Not just environmentally but National Security energy policies made any new V8 driver look like an overcompensating incel Maga boy who couldn't get dates unless he had money and found a gold digger. So a tasteful V8 with manners like this Bora was really a small niche of buyers who had nice Lancia, Alfa and even Fiat to choose from if Italian cars were your thing. There was a 128 Fiat coupe I believe and the Abarth 850 Spider, which I believe had 910cc and dual Del-Orto carb setup. Nothing fast. But fuel supply mentality was what was on everyone's mind. That Alfa GTV SPICA coupe would be pretty difficult to turn down. '74 all around disc brakes, about 2100 pounds, and around 130hp. My Opel GT I rebuilt late 70's for my first car seemed fast. 20 years later I get a stock GTV with SPICA and remember the Road & Track comparison road tests that planned the Opel GT. Now neither were in that Bora's realm of performance, but both the Opel GT and Alfa GTV could get 30mpg on the highway easily. That was a really big deal then. Not because gas was expensive but fears of supply issues.

    What incompetence! To say that the Bora was a competitor for the Ferrari 308 displays complete and total ignorance. The Bora was the competitor to the Miura (then Countach), the car that became called the Berlinetta Boxer. The Maserati competitor to the 308 was the Merak, which failed because it had a V6.

    The Citroen hydraulic system ruined the car completely with little to zero brake feel, sames goes for the early meraks and is probably one of the reasons they did not seel that well. The two Thepennier Bora race cars commissioned in period used conventional brake systems and did not race on the track when they tried to compete because they were too quick compared to class, and the last road meraks switched to conventional brakes also which were so much better for driver feel when pushing hard. The last of the Merak series, with the conventional brakes was actually a much better made car than the equivalent period Ferrari's with very neutral handling, just without the badge or the top end sound compared to those..

      As a ten-year Bora owner, I disagree. Maybe it takes more exposure to the LHM system to appreciate it. The brakes modulate perfectly well. What might throw you off is the actuator valve responds to the amount of foot pressure, not foot movement. In a sense, you brake with your ankle, not your leg. The brakes are durable and fade-resistant: I’ve pushed my Bora hard on hot laps at an F1 track and it endured and behaved with confidence, even at its limit, with confidently manageable throttle-on oversteer. The Thepenier Boras were upgraded with the same rotors and calipers as the Lola T70, but retained the Citroen LHM actuation. The LHM systems are reliable and easily rebuildable with ample supply of parts when needed. I do agree that most people find the LHM system frightening. And it’s unusual, which gives rise to what I consider an easily-repeated myth of high maintenance and iffy performance. Perpetuated by non-owners. Cheers.

      @@65SATisfaction Thanks for sharing. However I must strongly disagree having driven a Merak with the same system. The brakes are either there or not and i have an extremely sensitive foot, there was absolutely no modulation no matter how i moved my foot or ankle having tried many ways to do so, and this diminished confidence when pushing on. Plus you have the added bonus that the system is driven by the engine, so despite having an emergency safeguard that should stop you if the engine fails that is also not reassuring. The Bora's handling is not in question and was far superior to same category Ferrari Daytona Competition cars, so much so that they were stopped to race by the marshals because the Thepenier Boras were too fast for their class. There was a detailed analysis of the build of the Thepenier Boras and the French period report I read stated they had "conventional" braking system (not rotors/calpers which were upgraded) not the LHM system at all so we must have different reports is all i can say. As I stated many potential owners did not like the LHM braking system and that stopped sales. This was so much the case with the Merak in the USA that DeTomaso, who owned Maserati then, switched the layout to conventional braking system without "any" Citroen parts, and these last cars are the most highly praised cars and again having driven one I can tell you they are night and day better as a drivers car than the previous LHM equipped ones for my driving style. I prefer very fluid brake and throttle modulation and preferably a torquey engine and equal weight distrubution. Any Bora could be converted like the Merak to non LHM style and this would be my ideal.

    • @cbca6567
      @cbca6567 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i omitted to add, that the LHM system is a great and reliable system for the cars it was intended for, the Citroen's and it had reliable stopping power when it is working and fully maintained. However it was a mistake for a sports car, for reasons stated. The same can be said for modern drive by wire braking systems, completely lacking in feel and also anathema to my driving style.

    • @65SATisfaction
      @65SATisfaction ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cbca6567 .. we have diverging experiences. I’ll stick my neck out and suggest that if your Merak’s brakes were “either there or not” and not being able to modulate, something was very wrong and you were right to abandon driving it. Did you investigate the problem? I don’t think your experience was how a properly working and maintained system behaves, despite the difference between their use in Citroen street cars vs high performance Maseratis:
      Alfieri was not lacking in development resources to fully sort out the Bora, Merak, Khamsin and Indy. They were developed, tested, tweaked and sold with all the qualities Alfieri demanded of every Maserati.
      My source is Marc Sonnery, in his book ‘Maserati in the Citroen Era’, stating the Thepenier Group 4 Boras retained the LHM boosted brakes. Cheers.
