  • Before purchasing a wind mill, Do's and don'ts of wind tower construction. My personal experiences
Many people will purchase a wind turbine and in their great excitement will give little to no thought to the actual tower and its construction and cost. In this video I will be pointing out some of the things to look for as well as some of the things one should avoid.

Best video on youtube for towers for small turbines. Some of the commercially available tower kits and installation manuals I've seen are downright dangerous. Really sound advice.

I'm building a wind generator out of a half horse DC motor. I live on a hill, almost at the top. I already have twelve hundred watts of solar panels and 20 marine batteries. I am using a 2000 watts low frequency pure sine Aims Power inverter charger, 24 volts. I went with a $216 charge controller from Epever. I had the cheapest one a couple years ago but it wasted 1/3 of the power. I wrapped a cord around the 3 inch pulley and pulled, and got 79 volts. It might make 350 watts. I bought a Winco Lil Dog generator so that I can use my welder. I had to use it once to charge the battery bank after six days of rain and clouds. My inverter went into charger mode finally. I broke the Honda engine in charging the battery bank. It took the batteries from 21.7 to 24.5 in about 35 minutes, used six ounces of gas. It rained and blowed, and if I would have had a wind generator, I probably wouldn't have needed the gas generator. I'm going to try 25 feet for the pole...I'm ten feet above the neighbors roof to the South, at ground level. The sand rocks are just a few inches deep, so I don't know how deep of a hole I can make in it. But it will be solid. I'm going to have it just off the North side of the building, so that I can walk on the barn roof to lay it sideways and set it on top of a short post. The generator will be 40 feet from the battery bank. I have an 8 foot piece of 6 inch I-beam that will be concreted about halfway in the ground, so that the pipe will rest against four feet of it at the bottom, when it's raised up. I'll chain it at the top. I can't get too elaborate because it's my uncle's place. But he wants me to make one. I plan to use the battery bank as the dump load. I might need four more of them. That would put me at 1200 amp hours. I use the 29dp-dl from AutoZone. My oven uses too much wattage. I need a smaller one for winter. I use the wood stove some, so that helps, I just took the motor out of an Oreck vacuum that was stuck, got it loosened up and it looks like it will make a good 24 volts fan motor. It might run fast enough on twelve volts. I like having my own power set-up. I'll be 67 in a month. Us old guys have to have something to tinker with.

Wind power is definitely an undertaking but worth it if you have the wind and it sounds like you do.

do you still like the wind turbine itself? $600 utility bill trying to get that down

I asked Ista for a i1500 shipping quote and they can't even give me shipping costs, just ghosted me. From what I heard they ship it via ups but ups doesnt do freight anymore so then once it hits ups they call you and ask for a Freight shipper from their warehouse. I think shipping is higher than the turbine right now.

I wish I could remember what I paid for the shipping, and yes it was weird, but seems to me it wasn't too too bad.
